SummerSlam is this weeked, so we will be kicking off the week with a look back at the first women’s match in the history of the event. SummerSlam started in 1988, but it wasn’t until 1994 until we got a women’s match on the card. Technically, there was a match between Sapphire and Queen Sherri booked for the 1990 event, but it never took place as Sherri won via forfeit. Sapphire never came down to the ring for the match.
In 1993 however, the WWF Women’s Championship was back. It deactivated in 1990 when Rockin’ Robin left WWF. Alundra Blayze was positioned as the champion after defeating Heidi Lee Morgan in a tournament. In 1994, she would defend against Bull Nakano at SummerSlam.
The lead up to this match actually saw Luna Vachon in a series of matches against Blayze. However, Blayze continued to come out on top. To help with this, Vachon brought in Nakano to face Blayze at this event. The match saw a result that left Blayze retaining. After multiple involvements by Vachon, Nakano went up top for a leg drop, but missed as the champion moved out of the way. Blayze would then knock Vachon off the apron and land a bridging German Suplex to get the pin and retain.
Just a few months later, Nakano would become the WWF Women’s Champion after defeating Blayze in November. Blayze would win the title back in April of the following year and Nakano would leave WWF and join WCW.
Both women are now WWE Hall of Famers with Blayze being inducted in 2015, while Nakano was recently inducted in 2024.
