Ever since crashing through a table at WrestleMania 33 thanks to Seth Rollins, Stephanie McMahon has been off WWE television screens. Still, the Commissioner of Monday Night Raw has stayed busy during WWE’s tour of the UK through numerous media appearances.

In an interview with UK’s The Mirror, Stephanie discusses the possibility of making a in-ring return, what she loves about her heel character and the WWE’s Women’s Evolution. Highlights of the interview below.

On the chance of making a return to the ring: “I absolutely love the in-ring performance aspect to what we do. It’s such an honour to be able to get in there with some of those performers and actually take bumps or tell a story of the match. I’m not necessarily the best but I do love to get in there, so if there’s ever an opportunity again to do that and to help make somebody else then I would absolutely welcome it.”

On what sparked the Women’s Evolution: “I truly believe it was our fans. Because our fans started the hashtag called #GiveDivasAChance and it trended worldwide for three days. Their voice was so loud, calling for more better matches, more athleticism, more enhanced storylines, better character development, you know our fans really wanted to see our female performers at their best. And really more akin to what was being done in NXT [WWE’s developmental brand]. Any woman who has ever stepped foot in the ring has helped pave the way for this but it really was our fans’ voices. So much so that our chairman and CEO, yes my father, responded and said ‘we hear you, keep watching, #GiveDivasAChance’. Since then we have re-branded the entire division to the women’s division, debuted the new women’s championship belt and now our women are called superstars, just like the men.

On her heel character: “I love being a villain. It’s my favourite. The louder they boo, the more I know I’m doing my job. And it’s just fun to engage and interact with the fanbase. When they’re chanting and cheering and jeering as it were, to be able to have that live mic in my hand and interact with them and sometimes be able to catch them off-guard, there’s no better feeling.”

Stephanie also discusses the odds a WWE PPV taking place in the UK, being able to perform alongside her husband Triple H and working with Kurt Angle.

  • Memo Soto

Is there any woman deserving of going one on one with her, tho? And before you say “Sasha”, No, untill Sasha becomes Heel she is IRRELEVANT, there, I said it.

    • Number One

Nikki, Bayley, Charlotte. Yes, Nikki and Charlotte are on SD, but even so, they could make those matches happen

    • ABC_1990

Why would they do a heel Sasha vs. a heel Stephanie

    • Wrestling.fan.from.France

      “Deserving” Lol

    • Joseph

Heel Sasha vs. Heel Stephanie isn’t going to work.

I’m all for Stephanie having one-offs in the ring like she did against Brie. She gets great heat, and while she’s not the best in the ring, she surely isn’t terrible. As of now, I don’t see the right feud there to bring her in the ring–but who knows what’ll change in a few months.

Plus, that table spot at Wrestlemania was awesome.

  • VonBlade

The only person ‘deserving’ of getting in the ring with Steph is Eva Marie, because it’s a freaking punishment. She never learnt her Dad’s trait of the importance of a heel taking a beating to get their comeuppance. Even the table was Trip bumping her gently rather than a face getting good the reward.

  • YonceLuvsDivas

I’d like her to bully Sasha Banks like she did Daniel Bryan. Some how in the middle of this she wins the women’s title. By Mania Steph will defend the title against Sasha this giving her that triumph face win.

  • George

I would her to go against Nia Jax lol

  • Aye Mate

No thanks. She isn’t an active wrestler and isn’t in the habit of putting over other women.

    • Izzy4lw

This! A case could be made against her being an active wrestler; the right character alone is enough to garner major heat and can guarantee a huge rub to whatever baby face is in a program with such a mega heel (Beth’s face turn worked so well, in part, because she set her sights on Smackdown’s biggest heel in Vicki Guerrero, Lita went from popular wrestler to mega star after her feud with Stephanie in what I think was the only time Steph has lost a ‘feud’ and even that was more about the Hardy’s vs. DX than it was steph/Lita), but the problem is that Stephanie never puts anyone over: even the WWE’s golden girl Trish Stratus lost her program with Steph, and poor Brie Bella was on the cusp of something huge, but McMahon’s win and Nikki’s turn ended up killing what credibility she had gained as a true contender in the division (not to mention the dressing down of AJ Lee on various occasions)

I would only ever support her returning to in ring action and another feud with one of the main roster women ONLY if it ended with her putting them over and not squashing them in the end to show McMahon dominance, as is custom.

      • Rose Márie ?

She lost to Sable before as well.

        • jcott3

Steph was a face during that feud.

          • Rose Márie ?

What I’m saying is she lost. She still put somewhere over. Well actually Sable put her over since Sable was more popular and Stephanie wasn’t a face facing Sable she was a heel as well heel and heel happens sometimes.

          • jcott3

Try again. Stephanie became a face in 2002 while she was GM of Smackdown and feuding with Eric Bischoff, and was the face in the Sable feud, as she resented Vince cozying up to her. Fans might not have sided with Steph that much (let’s face it – she’s much better as a heel), but she was still the face.

Also, heel vs. heel matches are very rare, as the crowd doesn’t know who to side with.

          • KatyaMenelli

no, Steph was all the way face when she feuded with Sable. Apparently you weren’t watching WWE at the time.

          • Rose Márie ?
      • Aye Mate

I’m of the opinion that you can get a full time wrestler to the level of heat a McMahon has with solid writing and precise booking. McMahon gains nothing from going over in any rivalry and isn’t hurt by losing because of the natural power she possesses. Difference between her and Vickie Guerrero is that the latter ALWAYS got her comeuppance at some point or another.

      • ralfikh

Agree.. Brie should’ve won that match. She on a roll to at that time. Such a waste of great feuds. The bella feuds not even have a ending, it somehow been drop. Such a waste

    • James Winters

in all fairness, Stephanie put Lita over big time back in the day, which kind of revitalized the womens title….but thats about it. steph doesnt lose in the end.

      • Rose Márie ?

She lost to Sable as well.

        • James Winters

oh yea! i liked that feud tbh

        • Miguel Orona Rodríguez

Didn’t Trish, Sable & Lita won matches over Steph? Didn’t Brie got very popular by feuding with her?

    • Miguel Orona Rodríguez

Well Brie Bella won a lot by feuding with Stephanie McMahon. What are you trying to say? Interactions with her only make the opponent bigger, that includes men.

      • Aye Mate

Like that time, as a heel, she interrupted AJ, also a heel, and her post title victory promo on Kaitlyn, who she also ran down for interrupting her?

        • Wrestling.fan.from.France

Well, she wasn’t a heel yet on AJ, since she turned at SummSlam with the Daniel Bryan screwjob. ;)

        • Miguel Orona Rodríguez

AJ Lee didn’t saw any harm to her career with the interactions with AJ. At some point she wasn’t a heel or a face, she was just crazy AJ.

          • Aye Mate

If you say so buddy ??

      • Nathan

I agree. Even if she wins it’ll do wonders for the other girls involved.

Well brie and Nikki both shot to stardom after their fued with Steph so did Trish ….

    • Jo9834

I mean whoever she steps in the ring with, win or lose, ends up becoming a pretty big deal, not to mention the amount of TV time the storyline gets so its a win win really. Having a Steph vs Bayley match at WM would have been great or Steph vs Sasha.

  • Lushluke

Personally I love Steph in the ring

    • Number One

So do I! Have her compete once or (maybe) twice a year! They need to do Stephanie vs Nikki at one point!

  • Bryskers

I wonder if miss Steph realizes the negative impact she has on the product or if she’s so far up her own arse that she thinks she gets heats ’cause she’s doing a good job.
No actually, it’s unfair of me: she IS doing a great job… of undermining talent and making them look stupid as hell. I’ll never forget the few useless times she butted heads with Charlotte. And that’s coming from someone who actually likes her character, just not the way she is presented/”booked”.

  • Ollie Roche

tbh I think all the girls right now are too good to have a believable match with Stephanie. Trish, sable and Brie(yes her too) were green so it looked kinda believable and she beat Jacqueline and Lita with interference, honestly I don’t see any positive outcomes now.

  • Diva_Fan

I would love a Stephanie vs Sasha fued it would SLAY !

  • Rose Márie ?

Stephanie vs Charlotte book it. Something that should have happened with AJ Lee.

  • ABC_1990

Unless she’s gonna put someone over, no thank you…Stephanie rarely puts anyone over and the last thing we need is Stephanie burying one of the female faces

  • The women’s match we’ll see in the WM main event: Charlotte w/Ric Flar vs. Stephanie McMahon w/Vince

    • Simone Mackey

      That’ll be dope

  • Stephanie has always been my favorite so I am bias but I love to see her wrestle again. A program against bayley would have been great. I don’t get the whole Stephanie never put anyone over since it’s definitely not true. Her feud with the Bellas launched both of them into superstardom.

  • Gabriella Panajotova

NO. Unless you lie down for the 3 count and take your fucking beating as a heel like you is supposed to, don’t even think about entering the ring ever again.

    • Booking 101

Where can I sign for this?

The last thing we need is somebody to lay down for Stephanie to take the win and have her moment of glory. Because the last time Stephanie step foot in a ring was for Stephanie, not for Brie. That was Stephanie’s moment, not Brie’s. Actually we all saw where Brie’s direction as a character went, don’t need to elaborate on that

    • This.

  • Miguel Orona Rodríguez

The only women to ever come close to Steph is Vickie. These two could put over man and women. A match or feud with stephanie is something huge that any superstar with benefit from. Brie Bella is the lastest example.

  • Here for it.

  • She needs to sit her ass wherever the fuck else. She never puts anyone over inside the ring. Make somebody? Yeah as if. Only woman that ever beat her other than Lita was Sable.

    • KatyaMenelli

and even Sable needed help to win that match tbh. Only reason she won was because the feud was more about Vince.

  • Organization XIII

Never understood why people were mad at Steph ? You don’t HAVE to win to get put over smh lol But i love Steph’s character. She the 2nd best if not the best woman mic worker

    • Gabriella Panajotova

Yeah, but you also have to NOT look like an idiot by the end of the feud. Which is what her opponents end up looking like recently. Back in the day I lived for her because she was the queen of the cunts but she got what was coming to her. Now…I just don’t even wanna see her.

      • Organization XIII

I dont recall anyone looking like an idiot lol Any opponent I’ve seen her face really rose in popularity. That’s pretty much the whole reasoning of her facing people. & I also can’t remember the last time she won fairly

        • Gabriella Panajotova

Brie. Brie looked like a complete idiot. Being played by Stephanie and Nikki, then absolutely no reason given for forgiving her in just a matter of minutes.
What got Brie over was TD and her relation to DB, not Stephanie’s feud. After the feud with Stephanie the lackluster aftermath even almost screwed Brie’s improved fan connection.

          • Organization XIII

Mmm…I disagree. Brie’s feud with Steph deff propelled her forward. Especially for those people who weren’t fans of her. It set her up for an almost even bigger feud (that’s what it should have been) with her sister. & the aftermath of her feud with Nikkis what hurt her imo because they never fully followed thru with it.

  • Charlotte Flair [Mod]

    Phony Steph Steph as usual

  • Wicked Bliss

Her match with Brie was interesting because of the story telling so shes still worth watching maybe occassionally. I remember that is the time Brie got one of her biggest pops so I wouldnt mind if she gets into the ring just to put them over.

  • Justin Trenton #NotMyPresident

Charlotte vs Stephanie could possible be large enough to main event WM.

  • Geek God

  • I think an amazing feud for WM 34 could be The Boss McMahon Vs The Boss Banks.

  • Super Mateo

If the build is like the Steph/Brie build in 2014, where it was a logical continuation of another hot storyline, then this could work. If it’s the 2017 version of Stephanie, that’s immune to any kind of accountability, it won’t.

While Sasha can pull off great matches with anyone, Stephanie’s best opponent would be Bayley. However, if Stephanie always gets the upper hand during the feud, the match will fail because no one will think Bayley has a chance. Bayley would need to get the upper hand at times. This could really help Bayley get over as a face.

Sasha vs. Stephanie would be amazing, but I think Steph would be better for Bayley. Then again, Stephanie really shouldn’t appear at all, unless the creative team figures out how to fix the character (ya know, by having others get the best of her sometimes).

  • Kelly/Asuka???RainbowGoddess!

Stephanie McMahon vs Alexa Bliss! Book it!

    • PYM #TakeoverSmackdown

Girl… woman’s special slap is a basic ass name they gave to the diva’s finisher in a video game. That ain’t a real life finisher or name.

      • Kelly/Asuka???RainbowGoddess!

thank you! Some one got the joke! lol That name and finisher was so basic!

        • PYM #TakeoverSmackdown

It was always Torrie Stacy Sable and Stephanie’s finishers… so iconic.

          • Kelly/Asuka???RainbowGoddess!

I think Trish had it as her default finisher in her first Smackdown game. What I didn’t get was when you used that move, the opponent always falls facedown in the opposite direction of the user lol

          • PYM #TakeoverSmackdown

It was also one of Ivory’s finishers in Shut Your Mouth. You could still pin easily.

  • Darren C. #Anti-Marks ?

  • Thomas Keenan

I would like to see her in the ring. She would get some payback for how she treats the wrestlers in the ring. She would also look hot in a wrestling outfit.

  • brimode

I’d love to see Stephanie mix it up in the ring again. So what if she didn’t take the loss when she wrestled Brie? Brie got MEGA over in that storyline and was perhaps the most over Diva on the roster at the time, or at least on par with AJ. And the purpose of the match was to turn Nikki heel, anyway, and what better way than to cost Brie the match? It was just a shame that the Brie vs. Nikki rivalry after suffered from terrible booking, because otherwise that would have been a candidate for the Divas rivalry of the year (obvs up with Brie/Stephanie).
People need to realise that in wrestling, putting someone over doesn’t always mean that they have to win. The whole idea of being “over” means getting over with the crowd, not winning or losing.
Stephanie is a heat magnet and will get any face Diva over if she starts a rivalry with them, and that’s why I’d love to see her be more actively involved in the Women’s division.

  • Nathan

Shocked at the amount not wanting her to fued and potentially wrestle with some of the women today just because she may win…. seriously? Trish, and the bellas both benefited massively from being involved with her.

  • KatyaMenelli

I really wanna see a Heel Steph vs. Face crazy Alicia Fox tbh.

    • Jesus’s brother

      It’s just you tbh

  • What?

Every interview she does is exactly the same. Why even report them anymore?
