The Women of the Year 2011: An Introduction

Another year has come to a close and another set of women have grabbed the headlines, broken barriers, entertained, and had women’s wrestling fans talking. As the world’s leading source for female wrestling, we felt we needed to honor the year’s biggest movers and shakers by compiling our first annual Women of the Year list.

A la TIME’s Person of the Year list, Diva Dirt has compiled a countdown of the women we feel have best embodied the zeitgeist of the year in women’s wrestling. To compile this list, the Diva Dirt team have tracked the headlines here at Diva Dirt over the past 12 months, followed the lively fan debate on social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook, considered the impact that the women have made within the industry, and taken into account personal achievements as well.

The Women of the Year have defined the spirit of 2011 for Diva Dirt and its readers. They’ve been memorable, entertaining, shocking, the center of controversy and debate, as well as had a place in fans’ hearts.

No doubt you’ll be seeing a lot of “Best of” lists in the coming weeks, but Diva Dirt’s Women of the Year list utilizes our own unique perspective on the year, considering the news agenda in 2011, as well as the bigger picture such as the impact each woman has had in the industry.

So join us as the countdown begins later today…

It seems sadly inevitable Kelly will get this. Even though I’m not a fan by any means, by the specifications listed she does belong in the top 5…but I wouldn’t say she’s number one. Wherever she is on the list, Beth better be one step behind her: she may not have been given a magazine cover or the airtime Kelly got, but she dragged her through 3 decent matches, which is somewhat of a miracle.

For my money, Gail is number one. The most controversial, the most headline grabbing, one of the most talented and currently the most decorated woman in mainstream wrestling. Heck, whether or not she wins this she IS number one.

And I’m not even a fan!

Who I would say is the Top Five:
    1. Gail Kim
    2. Kelly Kelly
    3. Beth Phoenix
    4. Kharma/Awesome Kong
    5. Mickie James

Agree with all of your choices except 4 and 5. All though Kharma left a big impact in a little amount of time, Mickie James has done a lot more in TNA this year to deserve a higher spot.

I won’t be surprised if Kelly wins this with her championship run, top 100s in maxim, photoshoot in maxim, among other things like promotions(as always so nothing new there) and screentime.

Kelly had a good year. However I don’t understand the reason you think she will have the number one spot. At the end, she had a good year working on WWE. There are still the Indy promotions and TNA.

I think I would faster see Mickie to take the number one spot than Kelly. Until September she was the center of the KO’s division and now she is feuding with Gail for the KO’s championship. Also, when she won the KO’s championship in April she became the first – and until today only – woman to held both TNA and WWE major female titles.

Mickie may not have a magazine cover, but I’m sure a magazine cover isn’t be the main reason to give a number one spot – if it’s then Eve and Maryse (I’m aware the last won’t be part of the list) would be in higher spots than women that won many achievements this year because they both had been in the cover of a magazine.

If Kelly is number one, that would be a total negation of women wrestling.

People assuming a Diva/KO will steal the top spot? My pick goes for Melissa!

my pics for number possible number 1 are kelly, beth, gail, mickie and maybe some indie girls. but to be honest if we are going on acheivements it goes to mickie, she won the knouckouts title twice and became the first and still only female to hold all prestegious championships (if that’s what it’s called), gail is a close second, then it’s kelly and next beth. fith can be melissa.
