NXT Watch (May 30th, 2012): Kaitlyn Collides with Tamina, While Maxine Reminds Us of Happier Times

Good evening ladies and gents, and welcome to your one stop shop for all things NXT. Before we get started tonight, I want to provide a little history lesson. Now, if you know anything about grief, you know that there is an infamous model consisting of five stages. The first being denial, as in when I saw the first episode of ‘this’ version of NXT and believed that it was just a one week thing, shrugging off the thought this would be permanent. Next is anger, aka last week when I had to reach inside and pull out my first negative NXT review since I took over recapping the show last August. Third is bargaining, which happened earlier this week away from the recaps when I pleaded with whoever would listen to just grant me closure to the storylines. Who was attacking people backstage? Where is happy Maxine? WHAT HAPPENED TO JTG AND ALICIA FOX?! Okay… calming down. The fourth stage is known as depression, which is how I felt watching tonight’s episode. Don’t get me wrong, the matches were fantastic, and that goes for beyond just the Divas. This week, however, reverted back to all NXT originals, thus no Ezekiel, no Heath Slater, and no Great Khali… meaning that when I watched someone make their entrance (or get screwed out of one by a commercial like Derrick Bateman!), I thought of the good times they had entertaining. You know, since every single person actually got to do something pre-three weeks ago. But what’s done is done, and now I must face the final stage of the grief process… acceptance. So let’s get started with tonight’s show.

Tonight, we see Kaitlyn face off against Tamina Snuka in a match that pits two friendly faces against one another. Not only that, but Maxine joins the commentary booth to provide some of the humor that I have so greatly missed as of late. Now without any further ado… let us begin!

Out to the ringside area we head, as Josh Matthews and William Regal are joined by… are joined by… MAXINE. I need a minute to calm myself down from the thought of someone on NXT actually getting a speaking role, and once I do that, I then get up and salute the now strangely nice theme song of Kaitlyn even though I hated it when it debuted. Kaitlyn walks out and slaps hands with the fans, as Josh Mathews for what I feel is the fifty billionth time, incorrectly states that William Regal named Maxine the M.V.P. of the show even though Regal has corrected him every time before. Good lord, this isn’t Raw or SmackDown where you have to say the same three facts about someone over and over, Josh, this is NXT and our standards are much higher.

William Regal corrects him AGAIN, as the national anthem of the Divas division “TA-MEE-NA” hits, and our jungle queen walks out still happy and friendly which disappoints me as I had called a few weeks ago that I believed Tamina would just randomly turn heel with no explanation because they would realize things are incredibly thin on the heel side. I mean, it’s good that they still count her as a face since there would be no reason to turn her heel out of nowhere, but for my own selfish reasoning I’m upset dang it!

Tamina and Kaitlyn lock up as the NXT 3 winner shoves Madam Snuka to the ropes. Another lock up, as Tamina this time takes control and shoves Kaitlyn back. Snuka scores with a few vicious chops to the chest, before Kaitlyn fights back with an uppercut and a dropkick! An armdrag follows up, as she applies a submission to Tamina. Kaitlyn transitions it into a leg scissors, as Maxine provides a great quote, “I’m not here for the Divas, I’m here for me… and the sooner people realize that the better off we all are.” Both women get up, as Tamina drags Kaitlyn into the corner and the two trade chops. Suddenly Maxine perks up upon the discussion of Kaitlyn’s two toned hair! Tamina and Kaitlyn continue to try and one up each other with some stiff shots, as Tamina scores with a running butt splash!

A snapmare follows up with Tamina locking in an arm lock submission, as Maxine continues to amazingly go off on Kaitlyn’s hair. “How confused are you?! Did you just wake up one day like oh I want to be a blond, then wake up the next day oh I want to be a brunette.” Excuse me for a moment folks, but I need to pause here because I’m actually laughing and finding humor again! “If you’re that indecisive about your hair, how indecisive are you about your life… how do you make life choices correctly?!” Ahhhh, Maxine is seriously on her game when discussing Kaitlyn’s hair as she should be.

Tamina whips Kaitlyn across the ring and hits a huge legdrop, followed up with some knees to the face. From there, the daughter of Jimmy Snuka applies a chin lock, to which Kaitlyn finally manages to fight out… or not! Tamina slams her back down and goes for a few failed two counts as she reverts back to the submission. Kaitlyn starts to escape with some punches, before finally breaking out and hitting a nice crossbody. Tamina does a really nice roll through into a backslide, but just another two count. They exchange Irish Whips, until Kaitlyn leaps down to the ground and trips Tamina up, before then converting into the leg scissors submission for the victory as Snuka taps out! Kaitlyn celebrates her win, as Maxine stares on very unimpressed.

Thoughts: I really really loved this match. I thought Kaitlyn and Tamina meshed surpisingly well together, and flowed tremendously. It didn’t feel like they were just going through the motions or didn’t know where to go next, rather they were putting on a legit show. I commend them both on the improvement together, because even though we saw this match two times before towards the beginning of NXT’s glory days, it still felt fresh and the two stepped up to the plate & succeeded. Bravo ladies.

Commentary wise, Maxine had one of those nights where when she was on she was ON and when she was off, it was really off. On one hand, she sounded kind of depressed in parts (and who can blame her with how abruptly the show changed) like she didn’t really want to be there. I think once she even said she didn’t know what she was doing out there and was just told to come out! However, when she was talking about Kaitlyn’s two toned hair, I literally wanted to get up and bow to my computer screen. FINALLY something humorous has been bestowed upon us. It doesn’t matter how brief the moment, because like I said above, I will take anything! If that’s the only way we can get some humor, then put a Superstar or Diva on commentary for every match, stat.

Overall, while it will never ever reach the level that any episode from August 2011-early May 2012 gave us, of the past three weeks, I would say this has been the better episode. The one thing that irks me the most is WWE treating the show like utter crap by never putting it up on time or giving fans a heads up as to when it will be delayed until (since this is a weekly occurrence)… but never fear, I’m holding in all of my bottled emotions until the final episode of NXT Redemption where you will get my long brutally honest candid thoughts of how I feel about topics including the show, the people involved, and the disgust I have for how it gets treated as the ugly stepsister of WWE programming. Trust me, this will top every shoot interview you’ve ever listened to so stay tuned!

Does anyone else think Maxine has been censored and is unhappy about it? She was nothing like her usual self.

    • Bobby

I get that feeling too. First with her ring gear and now tonight, it just seemed like she couldn’t be herself or the version of herself she was playing before the show format changed.

    • T@KESH1

what would she have said otherwise?

  • MickieX

OH WOW!! A divas match i thought wwe forgot they had divas for a second. But Maxine…. GIRL!! She is my favorite #Heel . Shes fiesty like Melina & arrogant like Maryse I just love her . Her mic skills have just improved perfectly. Now they need to put more drama in the submission moves cuz i mean i didnt even see tamina tap it looked rushed . I agree Maxine u have done better.

    • Raekon

She tapped with her foot. ^_^

  • SherriShepherdWWE

Loved the match Tamina and kait did really well together and it was a nice match, :)

however, what really surprised me was how sucky Maxine was on commentary, i thought she was gonna be awesome, but wow was a dissapointment

    • T@KESH1

      agreed on the match
other than Tamina missing the corner reversal, and (like maxine) kaitlyn doing backmount holds that make the position of her finisher less special, it was a nice, simple match.

      on maxine
I think it shows just how much ‘specific, scripted opportunity’ = what is mainly creditable for her persona. Maxine was lucky that her theme of indifference befits her drab monotone. She did get more comfortable as it went on and made a concerted effort to not stutter in the beginning, but:
-it came at the cost of clear stall talk (repetition)
-the stutters came anyway and were often
-the good “I’m here for me” line was torpedoed by her lack of affect
-she once responded with something even Regal could do nothing with (sardines keep her full – line)
-had a horrid word misuse – “(…lot of phone calls) unknowin”

I don’t know, on one hand I liked the match, but on the other hand I didn’t. I think there moves were on point and everything flowed well. But, it felt lackluster and boring to me. I hate when matches consist of chin locks, rather than actual moves.

I just wanted a part of the match that kicked into high paced action since both are known for it, but we got none of it.

I love that they got more time here, just wished it wasn’t used for kicking and chin locks half the time. I did love the finishing sequence though, very creative!

  • javiousmckenzie

I was not impressed with this match for one Tamina was made to look like the only diva who could give Beth a run besides Victoria she has been the only one to life her off her feet then she ends up back on NXT with her push being took from her 2 Kaitlyn move set is so all over the place it does not click it just look like she is pulling off moves taught before the match the way they did with Ashley and Maria back in the day 3 Kaitlyn like Raquel gets winded quickly and you can see it 4 They have ruined Maxine momentum changed her look watered down her attitude and everything and you can see it in here eyes she is like ughhhh

    • T@KESH1

There’s about as much validity to this comment as there is proper grammar.

  • Raekon

Honestly? I totally disliked the changes in the show!

All the people on this show got to show their talents, get involved in good and totally entertaining feuds and storylines only to cut off in a second, only to give us random matches with no meaning at all instead. -.-

Kaitlyn and Tamina did good but one could definately see that they both were hodling back.

Check their last match on NXT and you will see how hard hitting and physical it was back then. One could like feel every punch while this time it was totally “controlled”.

If you watch exactly you can see them both also calling spots on each other at some points, which indicates that they didn’t even got the time to train the match properly so they were calling the match to each other.

I REALLY hope NXT will go back to its “Glorious” days once the merge with the FCW talent has started.

    • shameronstar

Yea, what up with that? Why were Tamina’s and Kaitlyn’s wrestling watered down! With the improvements they’ve made in the last several months they could have totaled brawled, powered each other, and kicked ass!

    • T@KESH1

dunno why a repeat or upgrade of their last match didn’t happen. Maybe they were under rule to keep it simple as to get the taste out of last week’s horrendous match between Maxine & Fox.

      • redsandman99

Or maybe since the commentators were playing them up as friends they were supposed to play as such and not try to kick the crap out of each other?

        • T@KESH1

I’d need a pre-backstage segent to set that up.

Maybe b/c they’re two babyfaces who are also in a respect of strength, there might def be something to that, but it’ll take more than a pair of tie-up push backs to display that.

        • redsandman99

If this was the old NXT we would have most likely got a segment. But because they scrapped everything we didn’t get shit. It sucks. NXT had like the best segments.

        • T@KESH1

          so true

  • shameronstar

This is why I like the knockouts because their abilities weren’t stifled and they go hard and pretty quick paced without excessive rest holds and constant hair pull slams! Why doesn’t wwe book their matches like that?

    • http://twitter.com/BroskiRomano Ryan

Its weird how Michelle n Melina got in trouble many times for putting on good matches..shame really
wwe doesnt want its women looking good. Why? I have no idea. Seems everytime the reach a ceratin peak of improvement and work its quickly watered down by wwe..

Damn I could even make a pie chart or graph from this =D

  • LadyGoDiva

Can’t help but luv the color of Kaitlyn’s ring attire.

But Maxine on commentary was perfect for the match because it helped sort of focus on what Maxine wants to do in the divas division and brag about herself.

As for the match it was a nice face vs face match.

  • WWFoverWWE

I thought the match was slow and awkward. They just weren’t clicking. Neither of these girls are athletic enough to keep a fast paced, so that resulted in a snoozefest.

    • T@KESH1

      1. pretty much the only stutters came from Maxine’s commentary
      2. the booking/spot calling of a mainstay of rest holds is the cause for the boredom.

WHAT SPECIFIC INSTANCES WAS IT ‘slow and awkward’?

      • WWFoverWWE

The WHOLE match. No good rhythm or flow, not keeping the audience interested, and too many rest holds. I was falling asleep just watching it.

Though the other diva matches aren’t any better.

        • T@KESH1

sure but like I said, its NO fault of the execution by those two.

        • T@KESH1

u can’t blame them for it. u can have Bourne and Rey do this same match and it’ll be slow paced and not hot to the crowd.

check their last NXT match a while ago; see how its booking displays their athleticism!

  • AdrianRay

Can they just axe the division already? It is LITERALLY dead. Fuck it, I’ll do it! *Grabs axe*

  • wweandtnadivafan

soo what is this “change” people are talking about and TBH the match was soo boring

  • Matthew

I enjoyed the match, and episode all together, but I felt Maxine had been told to hold back a little? She is great on the mic – and I really enjoy her and Regal bouncing off one another, however – I just felt something was missing this week?

    Still love her though. <3

  • http://au.groups.yahoo.com/group/WWE_Divas/ art

This match was kinda boring for me….tamina shouldn’t have lost to kaitlyn i mean tamina had an awesome match on ppv & now shes stuck losing to maxine & kaitlyn….

    • T@KESH1

on Tamina, u on some kinda diff show or something?

Since her mid February ppv match she went 2-1 (both on NXT over Maxine – 1 singles/1tag) and had several NXT bits w/ Titus&Young that ended up being scrapped as they to smackdown and then she went on this 0-2 u speak of.

      • http://au.groups.yahoo.com/group/WWE_Divas/ art

i hate that shes wasted on nxt…tamina should be a top diva..

        • T@KESH1

          yeah aiight.

Her bf drama storyline was scrapped…at least they didn’t waste her bff (& character origin) storyline was used in 20 secs, after her joining The DoD was scrapped. ;)

  • http://twitter.com/BroskiRomano Ryan

wwe has censored Maxine for sure..they forced her to stop wearing the sexy ring gear she used to wear now she has to wear pants, whats up with that from WWE? its censoring the women, yet the guys can go half naked in there…smh its not cool at all..wrestling used to appeal to men like me.
Maxine seems bored. One thing I love about this woman is how she is so real..whether shes feeling it or not shes ALWAYS showing what she is and not hiding it. Love women like that

And love how she points out the hypocrisy in the world haha…
Dont worry Maxine Two wrongs do make a right. There is a time when rising above it is the right thing to do, but sometimes you gotta smack somwbodies face right off to make it right. Like my bro Sylvester Stallone sais..Gotta do what u gotta do!

BTW really good match from Kate n tamina! As usual always locking in the submissions! love how Kate has mad stamina in the ring! Glad NXT is like the practice zone for the divas..however that practice goes to hell once you go to Smackdown or raw…its to no avail lol…

Still Maxine is one sexy ass babe with real fire just like a like em
wwe needs to stop being such a pussy and let loose Maxine let the chick dress as hot as she fucken wants to! Let her say what she wants to say..thats whats wrong with America bro..Love my country USA but its them pussies who complain about everything and get offended by anything…America doesnt negotiate with terrorist. America shouldnt negotiate with pussies either

  • redsandman99

I don’t think it was that bad of a match. Better than last week’s that’s for sure. I do miss the schenagians of the old. NXT became my favorite show for them :(

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/dsanchez96?feature=mhum sanchezdiego96

I got the same feeling about Maxine too. She looked and sounded so bored and uncharacteristic. When she started picking up about Kaitlyn, she’ll suddenly stop and go back to sounding depressed. Maybe she is being censored.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/dsanchez96?feature=mhum sanchezdiego96

I always forget something, haha. I love how Maxine is being built as a submission specialist. She’s no Nattie, but she is one of the very few girls who stick to mat based wrestling. And I agree with the last thing Maxine said. Okay match, seen better, and Maxine has been in better. I love how she’s so blunt about it.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/DivasManiaHD xILOVENATTIEx

Kaitlyn either needs to dye her hair fully blonde or fully brown, i don’t like this half half business

  • MrHVaron

Contrary to what this story says, Heath Slater was an NXT Original. Infact, he was S1, so I guess that makes him an Original NXT Original. :|

    • Bobby

haha I should’ve worded it better. By NXT Original, I meant during the stages of the Redemption season that were dominated by backstage segments and storylines. Heath was brought in during Redemption at random points, but he never really was involved in many high profile stories.

  • Marlon Eric

This match was boring as shit. Tamina should be right up there with Beth. And on that note, why are they fucking the rest of the division in the ass? They need to continue to rebuild women who can look like they can give Beth a run for her money. Tamina, Nattie, even Kaitlyn. And on a smaller scale, AJ and Alicia Fox. Layla isn’t even believable at this point.

  • Simply Flawless

Oh my Lord I would rejoice if NXT got cancelled, I find everything about it so god damn boring. Yeah the divas matches are long but they’re boring as fuck. I thought Maxine on commentary was dissapointing, I expect more of her .. uhm, yeah NXT is bad… the crowd is just beyond dreadful I feel sorry for the girls that have to perform infront of that shit crowd.

    • Marlon Eric

It’s really not the crowd’s fault. Even infront of “hotbed” crowds, when NXT is taped, the crowd goes dead. WWE needs to implement more of their successful wrestlers on NXT and give them better gimmicks. And PLEASE stop with the restholds. If someone’s style can be more exciting (like Derrick Bateman’s, horrible name by the way) let them wrestle the way they can!
