Trish vs Lita Makes Top 20 in Greatest Raw Matches Countdown

WWE has ranked the epic main event battle between Trish Stratus and Lita on the December 6th, 2004 episode of Raw as one of the greatest matches in Raw history.

Ahead of the flagship show’s 1000th episode on July 23rd, has been counting down the best 50 matches on Monday Night Raw — and Trish and Lita have ranked at a very respectable #16.

Speaking on the match, says: “Aside from the red-hot rivalry, what made this clash so outstanding were the daring maneuvers that shattered the mold of Divas matches. From a high-risk dive through the ropes to a back-breaking superplex, Lita electrified the crowd by venturing outside of the norm throughout the match. In a thrilling finish, Lita countered a Stratusfaction attempt and hit a reverse Twist of Fate, followed by a mighty moonsault off the top rope to end Trish’s 176-day title reign.”

Probably my favourite Divas match ever! :)

    • The K@rmic HeeL

Sam here, epic match and great ending. Having JR and the King calling it made it that much better.

  • Solo

These girls amaze me still to this day, and I sense 2 females icons, soon to be inducted in the hall of fame.

    • jaden25

Induct them at the same time. Jim Ross should induct them since he was the one who signed them.

      • Solo

        Yes agree!!!

  • shannymac

I want Lita to make a return so bad, you don’t even know. All I want is a short feud and a proper PPV match, and I’ll be happy.

  • itrae

Not only was this on my birthday (Great present) but in was in the city I live in!! Lita is still my all-time favorite diva!

    • VarsityBaseDude

      happy birthday!

    • 2kute4tv

as great as it was I think Mickie vs trish at mania was just as great but for raw my fav as well

  • WweLitafan4ever

Had a feeling this match was going to be shown;no surprise there.
Number 16 though is very high.
Amazing match though,my favorite divas match ever.

WWE did say though how this was the first diva main event when it wasn’t…lita vs stephanie was.
Anyways, good to see this on here.

    This match is always shown.
Its also gonna be on the WWE top 50 finishers of all time dvd where Lita’s moonsault is ranked #35.

  • MickieJamesFan07

Could get anymore predictable?? Yeah it was a great match, but there have been better (alundra vs Bull) and I am so freaking tired of hearing only about Lita and Trish as if they were the only divas then.

    • cheerleadermelissafan

Alundra vs Bull may have been a better match, but it in no way had the history or impact that the Lita vs Trish match above had. This match wasn’t one of the best because it was technically sound — which it was– but because of all the emotion and history behind it. This match told a beautiful story, and I feel it should have been on the list, especially before Alundra vs Bull (although they should have included both).

Lita and Trish may have not been the only divas, but they were the most influential and received the biggest reaction from the fans. It’s the same with the Rock and Stone Cold: they aren’t the best, but they had the biggest impact. It would be silly if they weren’t mentioned more than the others. After all, they played a larger role and did more ground-breaking things.

      • perceval

Yep, as great as Madusa was, she wasn’t able to sustain a Women’s Division, either in the WWF or WCW when they tried it.

The Golden Era is when women’s wrestling moved from novelty to upper card draw, creating the market for all the women’s divisions and promotions outside of Japan that we enjoy, today. And, these are the two women who made that possible.

    • cutymania

Still though, it had story, psychology, technique and everything that makes a great match, not to mention one with a classic dynamic of monster heel vs fiery babyface – which is something we haven’t seen in WWE since, except for Kharma. People still talk about the Bull vs Alundra matches, even though that was like 18 years ago.

      • Jamal

The WWE likes to pretend the age of “women wrestlers” never happened lol Luckily, the footage will always be there to remind us. The Bull/Alundra match on RAW was amazing and still holds up today.

  • 2kute4tv

And soon it will be kharma vs Sara del ray maineventing raw for the divas tittle omg I can’t believe the wwe signed Sara…….I happy day

    • BTylerHenderson

It will be a LONG TIME before we see the Divas Championship main event Monday Night RAW with the credibility it has today….but Kharma vs Sara Del Rey (or whatever they call her) will be a match that the WWE has never seen. Add Beth and Nattie to the mix and it’s a match that’s so awesome it’s retarded lol.

      • theprincedann

They need to get rid of the pink crappy butterfly belt before they even attempt to put it on Sara Del Rey or Kharma.

  • redsandman99

One of my all time favorite matches. This rivalry was so intense at the time, which just added so much to the match.

  • ssilva872

So happy to see it on the list and # 16 is very nice!

Lita is my all time favorite and Trish is a close 2nd so this match was my favorite women’s match of all time.

Such a good feud and a perfect win for Lita.

Such a shame it didn’t lead to a WM title match [poor Lita]. :'(

  • melon2617

This match was awesome. I have always loved Trish but I still loved this Lita moment.

  • revivingophelia

I loved this match… The way it was built up to as a major thing all during that night’s episode of RAW. Two women main eventing; it was great. Big honor for Lita vs. Trish to be ranked so highly on the countdown.

  • LadyGoDiva

No offense to Lita and Trish that was a great match and all but I would appreciate if WWE realize that they were other matches that were great.

    Lita vs Stephanie
    Alundra Blayze vs Bull Nakano
    Lita vs Victoria-Steel Cage
Candice vs Beth -2 out of 3 falls

I can think up a few more diva matches that should be on the card like the list of greatest diva matches in RAW history.

    • xadpfan

I totally get what you’re sayin but this match is more iconic because of what it represented.
      > it was the Main Event (only diva one I believe)
      > Greatest diva rivalry and one of greatest overall
      > Moves that break the diva mold
      > Lita’s symbolic suicide dive
      > and the crowd intensity that today’s divas rarely receive throughout the match

      • MickieJamesFan07

It wasn’t the first diva main event on RAW Lita vs Stephania was.

        • perceval

Lita actually considers this the only all-Diva Raw main event. When the match with Steph was pointed out to her, she replied that yeah, it was technically her vs Steph, but it involved the Rock, Triple H, & Kurt Angle, the match being mainly about the boys. The match with Trish was about THEM.

        • norisclouds

@PERCEVAL While what you are saying is correct, in the same interview she also corrected the interviewer that she mainevented twice for the women’s title. So she still recognizes her first win in the main event, and the significance of this second event involving just two women and no men.

  • lucky1now

this match really was ground breaking in many ways im very happy to see the wwe honor it

  • Ayrton12

My favorite divas of all the time, my childhood and teen age was great saw this type of matches, I remember that for some reasons in all 2003 and 2004 I can´t see the wwe, but when I see wwe again I saw this match *.* And I say OMG Lita and Trish still be my favorite SUPERSTARS! :D Good Times!

  • art

Loved litas moonsault…..a great & ground breaking moment for the divas….

    • WweLitafan4ever

yes that was a beautiful moonsault :)
i can watch it all day

  • perceval

Trish & Lita were the queens of Raw main events, doing it six times each, three times against each other.

Steph’s had three, Beth & Maria one each. AJ’s at two and counting, with Eve just having her first.

  • WweLitafan4ever

    lita vs stephanie
lita and the rock vs trish & hhh
lita and hardys vs stephanie & two man power trip
    lita vs trish
lita and edge vs john cena and maria
    lita/edge/randy vs trish/cena/carlito
    lita vs john cena

    • ssilva872

      That was the main event?

Really that match was like 2 minutes. :-/

I guess Lita has the most then if she has 7.

Perceval said she had 6 [tied with Trish] but I guess not if you are correct.

Either way it is cool for them both.

      • WweLitafan4ever

        yes it was the mainevent

  • Raekon

The match many thought that Lita was VERY Lucky for not breaking her neck when she almost botched her fall with the suicide dive.

Thankfully she had the luck to survive through it and deliver a wonderful match with Trish! :)

One of the best matches for sure.

I just hope the divas would still be allowed not only to have great storylines but also to work in the ring without restrictions so more hard hitting matches can be delivered with additionaly great moves involved.

  • natalyagailfan2011

OMG!! I’m so glad this match was ranked in the top 20. Congrats to Lita and Trish for even making the list. This match will always be in my top 5 favorite diva matches of all time. The rivalry between Trish & Lita will always be classic and iconic.

  • norisclouds

This is my favorite women’s match of all time. Kudos.

  • KellyKellyAJFan

One of the greatest matches, ever? Defitnetly <3

  • duhderrick

    God, I miss them.

  • Jamal

NIce to see the women get some shine but this is the most overrated women’s match in WWE history. The best thing it had going for it was a hot crowd. And the only thing amazing about that dive is that Lita didn’t kill herself.

    • norisclouds

Overrated is kind of a strange word to use…what matters in the memories of the fans? If I said that Trish Stratus was overrated, would that matter if most of the fans thought she was GOAT or Lita for that matter?

I’ve been on many different forums where the question has been asked, what was the greatest women’s match of all time? And for WWE fans, this is near unanimously cited as THE women’s match, over any other. Wrestling is kind of strange because hot crowds are just as much a part of the match as the match itself. It’s theater, if the crowd connects and responds to the performers that really adds to the quality and memory of the match.

I won’t argue on the point though, I just think overrated is a difficult thing to prove, if you can at all about anything–especially in wrestling.

      • Raekon

Fully agree with you norisclouds when it comes to the point that the crowd reaction matters on how some or many see a match.

When the reaction is high and the crowd is totally into the match, the even a mediocre match is received as a good or great match while great or awesome matches sometimes are received as “nothing special”, only because the crowd was totally dead.

  • Aksana

Lita pulled some sick moves in this match, that girl is fearless. Everytime I watch that dive through the ropes I get goosebumps, cannot get over how lifeless Lita looked. Insane. By far my favourite divas match of all time.
