WWE & TNA House Show Rundown: Results from June 25th-26th, 2011

9

Having trouble keeping up with all of the mainstream women’s wrestling that takes place off TV? Well fear no more! Diva Dirt has got your back with the House Show Roundown! Without any further ado, let’s kick things off!

This weekend, Raw, SmackDown, and Impact Wrestling were all working the live event scene. Over on Raw, we had a mix of matches involving some form of Divas Champion, Kelly Kelly, Eve, and Beth Phoenix against Maryse, Brie, and Nikki Bella.

Around the SmackDown parts, Natalya and AJ teamed up to take on Alicia Fox and Rosa Mendes.

Finally, Impact Wrestling gave us Mickie James against Madison Rayne just one more time.

This past weekend’s house show results below:

Saturday June 25th

WWE RAW in Dallas, Texas
Beth Phoenix & Eve def. The Bellas & Maryse in a handicap match (Source)

WWE Smackdown in Hidalgo, Texas
Natalya & AJ def. Alicia Fox & Rosa Mendes (Source)

TNA Impact Wrestling in Troy, Ohio
Mickie James def. Madison Rayne to retain the TNA Knockouts Title

“Rayne comes out to alot heat. Mickie gets a ton pop. they both put on a great match. By far better than any Womens match I’ve seen from any company in awhile. Mickie is was in control for most match. At end of match Hebner catches Rayne and Gives her a kiss. Mickie wins with jumping DDT. Mickie the kisses Hebner after match” (Source)

Sunday June 26th

WWE Raw in Houston, Texas
Divas champion Kelly Kelly & Eve & Beth Phoenix def. the Bella Twins & Maryse

“Slow Clap #3 of the night as the heels isolated Eve. Kelly eventually took the hot tag and picked up the win.” (Source)

WWE Smackdown in Laredo, Texas
A.J. & Natalya beat Alicia Fox & Rosa Mendes.

“Rosa got major heat, surprisingly, in what was a pretty good tag match.” (Source)

Thoughts: Some interesting things going on. The handicap match interests me because Kelly Kelly later made an appearance at the show with Dusty Rhodes, so it’s not as if she wasn’t there. I’m glad to see a lot of the matches are getting solid reviews from fans in attendance, and specifically happy myself to see everyone’s favorite freakin’ Costa Rican, Rosa Mendes, getting a strong reception.

First Look at WSU’s August 6th Card and More News & Notes from Uncensored Rumble

Diva Dirt has the exclusive first look at matches announced so far for WSU’s next show which will take place on August 6th.

WSU will tape two DVDs worth of content. The first taping will be headlined by Lexxus and Mercedes Martinez, after Lexxus won the Uncensored Rumble on Saturday night. The second taping will be headlined by a rematch between Alicia and Jessicka Havok following their war at Saturday’s show.

We can reveal a few more matches for taping one:
* Serena vs Annie Social
* Amber vs Sassy Stephie (Spirit Championship)
* Amy Lee vs Brittney Savage
* Niya vs Marti Belle vs Tina San Antonio vs Allysin Kay (#1 Contender’s Match for Spirit Title)

More news and notes from Saturday’s Uncensored Rumble show:

* I’m told that the pay per view garnered 650 iPPV buys on GFL.tv. The company hopes to break 800 next time.

* Jana had a legitimate concussion following the 4-on-4 match after a spot with Allysin Kay. She was taken to hospital and diagnosed with a mild concussion. She is fine now.

* Other injuries include Mercedes Martinez receiving a stinger, Brittney Savage was banged up, as were J-Hav and Alicia following their match.

* Annie Social is back with WSU full time while not working in Japan. Roxxie Cotton is also back on 8/6.

* This might explain Lexxus’ shock victory — the company is pushing for her and Allysin Kay as future stars in WSU. The company has lost a lot of talent who are going to Japan for long stretches working for REINA and Diana. The decision was made to focus on some of the homegrown talents such as Lexxus and Kay.

* I’m told the company is thrilled with Allison Danger’s debut. Company officials stress that WSU has no heat with SHIMMER or Danger’s promotion, Pro Wrestling SUN. They commend Danger for going out of her way to make the night special for a retiring Cindy Rogers. The official adds that they only company they have issues with is Wrestlicious for the way it portrays its women.

We will have full details and a press release about this show later this week.

QUICK SCOOPS:

– Thanks to everyone for making this the most bought WSU iPPV.

– Injury Report: Mercedes Martinez was banged up and had a stinger that has since went away….Jana of the Soul Sisters had a concussion and was pulled from the rumble. She will not miss any ring time. Jana has been on every single WSU show since day one… Brittney Savage was also banged up after her match…. Both Alicia/Havok had minor cuts/bruises and were sore after their encounter. No one is expected to miss any ring time.

– Annie Social is back with WSU full time and is on every show forward, as long as it does not conflict with her schedule in Japan.

– Roxxie Cotton was supposed to return to WSU last night but had car trouble. She returns 8/6.

– WSU was thrilled with the debut of Allison Danger. You can not write emotional moments & Danger sent off Rogers as classy as possible.

– WSU thanks Cindy Rogers for her loyal work here for 4+ years. WSU was honored Cindy chose to have her last match here. Cindy Rogers had a test run on commentary for the iPPV during the Rumble. Lots of tears were flowing after Cindy’s match. Martinez & Amy Lee put together Cindy’s post show segment, which will be released on the DVD as an exclusive.

– Jon Harder, who started on 4/2 with the company, and called the iPPV, is WSU’s full time commentator.

– After debuting in Reina in Japan, Latasha returns on 8/6.

– WSU apologizes for the late start time. Our original GoFightLive producer was in a car accident 2 weeks ago and we had a new staff. There were problems with one camera being out and another camera being black/white. WSU didn’t want to go on the air with a crappy feed, so we took the 20 minutes to make sure things would flow smooth. Since WSU didn’t want the fans live to just sit there, WSU asked Amy Lee & Rick Cataldo to go out there and do improv comedy to warm up the crowd while fixing the technical issues. We promise to make sure this does not happen again.

– WSU thanks Jamilia Craft for everything and wishes her the best of luck in Reina in Japan. The door is always open once Jamilia returns to the United States, as Jamilia has a one year deal, but who knows if it will be extended.

– Something major that will affect the course of WSU will take place on 8/6…..

– WSU has signed a deal to release compilation DVDs in national chain stores. We are hoping to have our first DVD “UNCENSORED Volume 1” released in stores this Fall. The DVD cover is already on our Facebook page. Stay tuned for more.

– WSU will return on 8/6… a press release is expected soon. It will be a double DVD taping and not taped for iPPV. WSU wants to spread out the iPPVs to make them feel more special and wants to use the double DVD tapings to help build up future iPPVs. WSU has renewed for a second year with Inasectv.com and wants to use the show to help push the iPPVs.

– WSU has several autographed posters from everyone on the event for sale for $10. To check availability/order, please email [email protected][/notice]

Unwrapped (June 26th, 2011): Alicia, Brie, Kelly & Velvet Sky

23

Every week, following WWE.com and ImpactWrestling.com’s photoshoot updates, we’ll take a look at the newest Diva and Knockout shoots and give you the opportunity to voice your opinions on them in a feature we lovingly call Unwrapped. Let’s unwrap this week’s eye candy, featuring Alicia Fox, Brie Bella, Kelly Kelly and Velvet Sky:

Note about TNA photoshoots: Many of the new photoshoots on ImpactWrestling.com only consist of 3 or fewer photos, which hardly lends enough material for an Unwrapped post. In order to make it worth your (and my) while, I’ll only cover ones with 3 or more photos to them. Please don’t leave comments asking about a missing photoshoot.

Alicia Fox
There’s a lot going on here, from the hot pink heels, the tie, the gold thing hanging from her hip to the mirror. This could easily turn into a jumbled mess, but Alicia manages to hold it all together, the gray color scheme neutral enough to not compete with her fiery red hair and Barbie heels. I’m usually of the mindset that you can break a look by over-accessorizing, and maybe Alicia could have ditched the tie or the gold dangly thing, but the whole look is kind of charming in its untidiness. Her poses are good, and most interesting when the mirror is involved, producing some really unique photos with her reflection and the bright white frame in the background. It’s a loud, busy photoshoot, but it’s a controlled chaos.

Brie Bella
Brie looks very casual and beautiful, her hair loose and wavy, and her single long necklace is more than enough jewelery. She looks perfectly at ease, enough so to make it look natural that her posing partner is a chair. The way she uses it is interesting: sitting on it, crouching beside it and even leaning against it. At times, it looks a bit unnatural, like she’s selling the chair in a catalog, but I like the way its colors play off the ones she’s wearing. The gray top (which is really cute, and unique with its cape-like back) and black mini skirt, in a strange way, compliment the colors of the chair. I’m sure it wasn’t the intention at all to find a chair whose color plays off her clothes, but the photos are better for it.

Kelly Kelly
For a simple celebratory photoshoot, this shoot is pretty interesting. Kelly’s shiny golden ring gear plays well against the silver of the Divas Championship belt. Her poses do well to show off the belt while not merely holding it–she interacts with it and makes for some fun photos. You can genuinely tell she’s psyched about holding that belt, and it probably has something to do with the fact that she had just won it, given the fact that she’s wearing the same gear. She manages to make the belt look important and not just like the Barbie accessory we like to degrade it as. As a title it may importance, legacy and a sense of legitimacy, but I’ll be damned if it doesn’t look good with Kelly.

Velvet Sky
Velvet Sky’s main objective in this shoot is, clearly, to show off her t-shirt. The poses aren’t diverse, and I don’t suppose they’re meant to be. So, since the focus is the shirt, I’ll take about that: it’s a clever way to celebrate the length of her TNA tenure, saying that she’s been “letting the pigeons loose” since 2007. It’s a cute shirt, and is something I’m sure would be a decent seller if it was marketed as official TNA merchandise. Unfortunately, though, it looks like this is one of a kind, since it’s being auctioned off on eBay as we speak. Maybe in the future it can become an official t-shirt. Until then, it made for a cute little shoot that reminds us just how long we’ve known Velvet Sky by this name, or rather, how long it’s taken us to get used to that name.

Shelly Martinez Calls a Truce with Batista

13

It’s no secret that Shelly Martinez has had her issues with former WWE star, Batista, stemming back to her time in WWE as Ariel.

The subject of the former WWE Champion was a hot topic in our interview with Shelly back in 2009 (LISTEN: Part 1 / Part 2), as well as her recent ‘Girl Talk‘ DVD for Highspots.

It was her clashes with Batista that ultimately led to her release from the WWE, but now both stars seem to be in a better place and have called a truce via Twitter.

Shelly wrote to ‘Big Dave’: “Truce?’

He responded: “That business brings out the worst in people…..truce.”

After calling their truce, Shelly wrote: “Thank u I feel soooo @ peace now I had a dream u & I were talking & the peace I felt in the dream is now my reality.”

Thoughts: If you’ve listened to our interview with Shelly, you’d know that these two had some pretty big bust-ups so it’s good to see them let bygones be bygones. I definitely think being out of the WWE has helped them grow and get to this point. Good for them!

Havok whips Alicia into the steel chair she propped up earlier face first.

Winner: Jessicka Havok

After the match, Havok gets on the mic and smack talks Alicia and her mother. She drapes a towel over Alicia.

Officials come out to the ring and help Alicia.

The match is restarted!

Savage goes for another Ace Crusher but Martinez counters into a Fisherman Buster to retain.

Winner: Mercedes Martinez

10.07pm | Very nearly had a new champion! Interesting bait-and-switch at the end that added some intrigue to what I think many fans, including myself, figured would be an easy victory for Mercedes.

Now time for the Uncensored Rumble match which will be competed under Royal Rumble rules. New entrants every 90 seconds.

The commentator says Rick Cataldo will not be in the match as he has a concussion. He was supposed to be #1 in the match. Jana won’t be in the match either due to concussion.

Martinez tells her to enjoy her moment because Martinez is going to kick her ass ‘New York style’ on August 6th. Martinez gives Boston Shore 5 seconds to get out of the ring… they flee.

Martinez says Lexxus better come prepared for August 6th. “Nothing good ever comes out of Boston.”

Martinez says she wants to take a moment to thank the fans. Martinez calls out Cindy Rogers, who had her retirement match earlier. Cindy and Martinez close out the show with an embrace.

Final Thoughts
Overall, I think this was WSU’s most cohesive pay per view yet with lots of good matches and storytelling, and not as much filler. Definitely check for the Rogers/Danger, Havok/Alicia and Serena/Roxx matches for the wrestling. As for entertainment wise, check out Astara/Jillian — particularly the pre-match promo should be seen.

Impact Write-Up (June 23rd, 2011): Seven Lashes for the Mistress

41

Ladies and Gentlemen, children of all ages… well, I think it best if we go 13 and up on this one… It is time again for another edition of the weekly attribute to Diva Dirt known as the Impact Write-Up. I am your lovely Impact Wrestling correspondent and you know you’re in for one hell of a ride. Now, last week, we saw the return of a prestigious women’s wrestler, who had a former run in TNA back in the day. We also saw some new colors on one of the bodacious Knockouts, just as we all requested. Not to mention, those left on the shelf in past weeks were finally able to rise from the shadows and display their awesomeness. What is in store this week on Impact? Well, I’ll tell you that we’ve got a tag match with camera angles bound to make you nauseous and a street fight of um, supernatural proportions? Not to mention, a glimpse into the future. It’s something you definitely don’t want to miss.

Starting things off on this fine and fiery night are the team of Velvet Sky and Miss Tessmacher! We first saw this duo together as a team last week, when Velvet accidentally cost them the match against the Knockouts Tag Team Champions, Sarita and Rosita. Obviously, they’ve made up after their little disagreement last week and are set to compete here tonight. They’ve somehow managed to coordinate their entrance in their time of aggravation, however, because as soon as Tessmacher sheds her jacket, Velvet…ahem, LETS THE PIGEONS LOOSE!

Yes. I said it.

Velvet aka Gangsta, takes to the microphone and says that after what happens to her last week, she and Tess went to the Impact offices. They petitioned to have themselves a good ole no-holds barred match but since the “old biddies“, as a friend called them, aren’t under contract, the match has to be done “by the books”. But hey, if it means payback and ass whipping, they’re both game. Even Tessmacher, who snatches the microphone, gets a little word in and demands they get their asses to the ring. Sure enough, after a moment’s wait, ODB and Jacqueline start making their way to the ring. And look at that, they match. How sweet. I need a trash can.

ODB immediately starts talking about her fat ass and demands for the ref to ring the bell but Velvet and Tess are ready. They charge the two intruders to the Impact Zone and the brawling begins. It starts on the ramp and soon makes its way over to the ring, battles on the outside. There are constant back and forth shots, Velvet on ODB and Jackie on Tessmacher. Or…well, vice versa. I guess it depends on how you look like it. I see choking and stiff right hands until finally, the camera manages to focus on ODB’s lacy orange bloomers. Yeah. They speak for themselves. Guh, this shit needs to straighten itself out real quick. Haha.

Where’s Judge Judy when you need some order in the court, hmmm?! I think she needs to fire Earl Hebner and take over. But I guess a commercial break will do for now. When we come back, Jackie is in the ring with Miss Tessmacher, showing her how the big girls wrestle. She hits her with a knee and a harsh forearm, basically deflecting any defense. ODB, meanwhile, is calling her a douche and talking about weaves. Jackie tags her in and ODB slaps her around, throwing that whore word around again. Tess tries to come back but as soon as it looks like she might have some kind of momentum, Jackie takes a handful of hair and jerks her back down to the mat. Velvet immediately goes on the defense and makes her way over, taking Jackie down on the outside.

This is not gonna be good for Tessmacher when she’s able to make a tag. She struggles to the other side and Velvet, too busy with Jackie, doesn’t quite make it. Almost looked like she was running in slow motion with that arm out. Slow ass. This gives the old biddies plenty of time to drag Tessmacher back to their corner, slamming her into the turnbuckles. I know that has to hurt. And Jackie makes sure the hurt sticks, not even giving a moment to breathe before she starts to wrench on the neck of Tessmacher. Another tag, before any true hurt can set in….Nevermind. I spoke too soon.

HIT THE LIGHTS! CUE THE EPIC WEDGIE!

Jackie, obviously forgetting for a moment that Tess could escape if she wanted to, grabs the bottoms of the younger girl and just drags her ass back with her. ODB is in, as soon as Tess gets up, and she takes her down with a harsh forearm. And another tag. Just make up your damn minds already! And get Jackie some water, she’s looking parched. Not to mention, she looks at ODB like she’s flippin’ crazy for tagging her back in so quick. I know I’m not the only one who saw that. Nonetheless, she goes right after Tessmacher but this time, she fights back and it sends Jackie back for ANOTHER tag. ODB comes in, popping the floaties and WHAM!

SPEAR! SPEAR! SPEAR!

No? Hell with you. Haha. The crowd loves it and so does Velvet, who is just dying to get into this match. She’s pounding on the turnbuckles and TAG! She comes in, taking down both ODB and Jackie with running clotheslines and as soon as they try to fight back, she hits them with a double. Something tells me that ODB is used to doubles. Drunkard. But Jackie, who is probably sober, takes to Velvet’s leg and her partner takes her down, but Tessmacher isn’t about to let that happen. She immediately goes after ODB and wrangles her to the outside. I do have to say, when ODB says “Oh my God! You suck!“, I almost peed myself laughing so hard. Just saying.

It doesn’t take long, obviously, for the more powerful of the two women to get the upperhand and she sends Tessmacher into the steel barricade. Insert dainty face flop here. Back in the ring, Velvet is choking the hell out of Jackie but ODB breaks it up, taking Velvet for some type of weird ride. It almost looks like a schoolgirl roll-up but..not..really. I don’t know. All I know is that Earl Hebner takes this moment to insert himself into the situation and powers ODB down to the mat, away from Vel Vel. This leaves Jackie free and as soon as Velvet stands up, she kicks her right in the va-jay-jay. If she fans it like Tara…I’ll die. Is she?! No. She just falls to the mat like any normal, boring guy would do and Jackie goes for the cover. Earl, back from his submission hold on ODB, counts the three and the old biddies have done it! They managed to murder the spine of Miss Tessmacher and prevent Velvet Sky from probably ever having babies.

Backstage, we see Tara all dolled up and she’s talking about July 14th. She’s finally going to get her hands on the self-proclaimed Queen Bee and destroy her. Oh, speaking of, Madison Rayne walked into the picture, right up to a seething Tara. She actually looks like she’s decided to ditch the weave and go au natural. At least it never looked like a sheared alpaca. Just saying. She tells her former bodyguard that she’s going to give her one chance to get out of this match. And if she doesn’t, she promises it will be her last. She gives her the opportunity to beg for forgiveness, let it all shift to the past and they can move on with their lives. But Tara, being the brash bitch that she is, passes on the chance.

Really? You’re going to pass this up? Madison isn’t impressed and before Tara can answer, she slaps her across the face, like a pimp to a ho. But Tara is quick on the draw. She lifts Madison up like she weighs nothing and slams her back first into the near wall. Oh hey. Handy placement. She screams “You’re mine, bitch!” and warns Madison to never touch her again. All while Madison stares at her like a child who has no idea why that just happened.

Later in the show, we see the preview for the upcoming streetfight between Mickie James and Winter but they can’t even wait until after the commercial break. As soon as we come back, they’re already battling it out in the lockerroom, conveniently with a referee. And it’s Earl Hebner, who just loves the Knockouts apparently. Winter has the upper hand and she just sends Mickie careening into a pair of metal trash cans. She tells the champion to give it up but the Virginia native fights back, only to be overpowered by the taller femme fatale. Winter drags her around the corner, shipping her into a…fence? Where the hell did that come from? Either way, Mickie sends a few boxes over in a sad attempt at defense, only to get her face smashed into one. Someone call UPS. This shit is going back!

Hebner asks Mickie if she’s ready to quit but Winter has other ideas. She’s removed her belt and slashes it down across Mickie’s back. The champ cries out and Winter taunts her, telling her she sounds like a little mouse. Our lash count makes it up to four before Mickie turns around, getting one across the stomach. Another pair to the backside and now they’re crawling up the steps, making their way to the ring. Something tells me that Winter has done this a time or two. Bobby, I’m looking at you.

From behind, Winter wraps that wide belt around Mickie’s throat and rears back, sucking the life out of her. Quick to maintain her hold, she rises up and starts dragging her new found foe to the stage, tossing her like a ragdoll across the metal when they reach destination. Mickie tries to crawl away, even managing to get a shot in when Winter stalks over to her but Morticia rounds her into the stage set. But Mickie is strong willed and gets a kick up, crawling up onto that same stage, coming down with a thesz press onto Winter. Multiple right hands but she isn’t going for a pin just yet. She’s looking for vengeance. She snags that leather belt and quick like a cat, Winter leaps out of the way.

WINTERLIKEAPUMA!

She jumps over to the ramp and tries to beg Mickie to step back but she keeps coming, sending them both rolling down the ramp. Rolling ALLLLL the way down the ramp. When they reach the bottom, Mickie tosses a couple of right hands then slings Winter, by the hair, down to the mat. She smacks her face against the floor but manages to shove Mickie into the guard rail in defense. She’s up and over at Mickie but the Knockouts Champion jumps up, wrapping those legs around Morticia’s neck. She executes the hurricarana, flipping Winter back down to the floor. Random thought but did anyone else notice the red gone from Mickie’s hair?

Anyway, Mickie takes a second to breathe then gets back on her opponent, rolling her into the ring. Come on! It’s a street fight! Fight on the street! Instead, she goes up to the top rope and as soon as Winter stands, she knocks her down with a high dropkick. It almost looks like she might have this one but she takes too long. Out of nowhere, Angelina Love springs into the ring and nails Mickie with that devastating backbreaker across the knees, rolling out of the ring before Hebner can notice. Winter had him distracted but it worked and with a crawl, she drapes an arm over the champion and gets the pin. You all know what it means when you pin the champion and so does Angelina. A smile spreads across her face and she gets in the ring, helping her mistress to her feet. She raises her hand in victory, smiling like she won the match while Winter…well, hot mess comes to mind. Haha.

Thoughts: Definite good showing this week. Both matches were very consistent and I definitely did not get bored. I think I’d have to say that the street fight was my favorite, even though I would kill to have made it last at least five more minutes. But we can’t always get what we want. Definitely wasn’t surprised with the outcome in that match, especially with the Angelina interference but hey, at least she looks normal again. I can’t say I’m surprised about Jackie getting the pin on Velvet either. It’ll be interesting to see if she and ODB actually “sign a contract” to become sanctioned Knockouts or if they just hang around, getting matches. From what I saw this week, Impact Wrestling is getting pretty good at that.

Also, cannot wait until July 14th when Tara and Madison finally get to go head to head. I would love for it to be a pay-per-view match but again, I refer back to my previous statement. Anyway, what did you guys think about this week’s Impact? Tell me about it! And until that time next week, my lovies! xoxo

Exclusive: Jillian Talks About Her Wrestling Comeback and WSU Debut

It’s been a long road back to the ring for former WWE Diva, Jillian, who was released by WWE last November, marking the end of a 7 year run.

After taking several months off to adjust to life after WWE, Jillian’s career now comes full circle as she returns to where it all started for her 13 years ago — the independent scene.

Jillian Hall Returns to the Ring, Wins First Match Back

Joining the ranks of fellow former WWE Divas including Jazz, Serena and Kristin Astara, Jillian will debut for Women Superstars Uncensored (WSU) tomorrow night in Union City, NJ. What’s more — her big comeback will air live around the world on Internet pay per view.

WSU is the all-female independent promotion that has picked up steam over the past few years, recently branching out into the iPPV business. The Jersey-based company has given stars like WWE’s AJ their break in wrestling, but also offered a sanctuary for TV names to continue wrestling after being uncermoniously dropped by WWE. Two-time WWE Women’s Champion, Jazz, has called WSU home for several years, while Serena and Astara recently joined. Even Mickie James competed in a WSU-sanctioned match last August following her WWE release.

In Video: Footage from Jillian’s Return to the Ring

The company also boasts a veritable “who’s who” of female wrestling names in its Hall of Fame including Dawn Marie, Molly Holly and most recently, Ivory. The latter, following her induction into the WSU Hall of Fame in March, even quipped that she wished a promotion like WSU existed when she was an active wrestler.

Now the spotlight is on Jillian, who has been billed as a star attraction on tomorrow’s card. Quite the difference from how WWE markets its Divas.

We briefly caught up with the former Divas Champion to discuss her return to the ring last weekend, and her big comeback with WSU. This Q&A is sort of a ‘part two’ to our more extensive interview with Jillian last year.

Read below:

You had your first match since WWE in Orlando last weekend. Before the match, you expressed your nervousness on Twitter. What were you nervous about?
My nerves came from me not knowing if I was ready to be in a ring again. When I left WWE, there was a part of me that truly thought that chapter of my life was over. I had turned down many requests to do a match before taking the Orlando show because it just didn’t feel right and on top of that my body wasn’t and still isn’t 100%. You wouldn’t think it, but it was a very emotional day for me.

How was it being back in front of a crowd and in the ring?
I was nervous up until the very moment I walked out that night. I wasn’t sure how the people would react to me. When I walked out and turned “Jillian” up, it felt very natural like I had done it yesterday. I was literally afraid I was going to throw up when I took my first bump, but that, also, was very natural. The crowd accepted me even though I wasn’t 100% and that’s something I really appreciated.

Fans will have noticed that you continued your singing gimmick from WWE. Are you planning to continue this gimmick or hoping to reinvent yourself?
My WWE singing gimmick, some people want to see and some people don’t. I’m someone who’s up for giving people what they want to see. I can and will adapt to different shows and crowds. Part of that gimmick is who I am though, so there will always be a little of that in my performance.

You’re debuting for WSU this weekend live on iPPV. What about this company in particular is it that caught your interest?
WSU seems like a respectable group of ladies. Why not be a part of something like that? This will technically be my first full match back. Why not do it in front of awesome women’s wrestling fans??

This will be your first match on PPV in some time, albeit on Internet pay per view. The event will be seen around the world. Do you feel any pressure as this is sort of your ‘comeback’?
I do to an extent. Like I said earlier, I know I’m not 100% ready, but I plan to give it all I have to give at the time. Maybe it will be enough, or maybe I’ll disappoint. All I can do is try. Hopefully, if I’m not perfect, my fans will be forgiving.

Your opponent this Saturday at the Uncensored Rumble is Kristin Astara. How familiar are you with Kristin’s work & how are you feeling going into this match with her?
I’m not that familiar with Kristin’s work, but I hear she has gotten quite good. I know she had some developmental training, so I’m sure with that we will have certain similarities. I’m actually looking forward to it!

Beyond the Uncensored Rumble, do you have plans to stick with WSU?
We will see what happens… Only time will tell what’s in my future at this point.

See Jillian’s big comeback live on iPPV tomorrow when she faces Kristin Astara at the WSU Uncensored Rumble. The event kicks off at 7pm ET. Click here to order.

WWE Superstars Redux (June 23rd, 2011): Buy One, Get One Free

Wow, two matches on one show? How did we get so lucky? No, that’s not sarcasm. I’m genuinely pleased that there are two Divas matches on WWE Superstars this week, mostly because of the show’s reputation for producing longer, better Divas matches. Let’s see if these two matches deliver:

We start off with a 6-Diva tag team match, the team of AJ, Kaitlyn and Natalya making their way to the ring first. Next is the team of Alicia Fox, Rosa Mendes and Tamina. It’s interesting to see the different dynamics of these teams: the babyfaces enter practically arm-in-arm, while the heels are several feet apart. I like it: little touches like that sell their characters.

Natalya and Alicia, arguably the alpha females of their groups (unscientifically known as the one whose music plays during the entrance), are starting off the match. Natalya immediately takes control after the initial tie-up, slamming Alicia to the mat and locking in a side headlock. Quick as lightning, though, Alicia reverses control with a headscissors hold. Natalya leaps out of it easily, and the two have a quick exchange that ends with Natalya lifting Alicia off the ground, slamming her to the mat and attempting to lock in the Sharpshooter. Alicia immediately starts squirming, dragging Natalya along with her to her corner. She manages to tag in Tamina amidst all the thrashing, and Natalya, as she must, lets go of the hold.

The action slows down a great deal as Tamina enters the ring, and the two circle each other. Tamina shoves Natalya, who on the rebound latches on a side headlock. Tamina shoves her off again into the ropes, but this time she manages to take her down with a shoulder block. Tamina goes for the first pin attempt of the match, but Natalya kicks out at 2. Natalya takes another trip to the ropes, but is quick to leap onto Tamina on the return, twisting into a pin attempt. Tamina kicks out, and rebuffs Natalya’s renewed attempt at offense with a knee to the stomach. She takes Natalya into the enemy corner and tags in Rosa.

Rosa takes over and attempts a suplex on Natalya, only for it to be reversed into a delayed vertical suplex. She holds Rosa in the upside down position for a good long while before finally slamming her to the mat. A little slap to the face precedes a pin attempt, which Rosa kicks out of at 2. Natalya full-on carries Rosa to her corner, slamming her into the turnbuckle and tagging in Kaitlyn. Natalya whips Kaitlyn into Rosa, hitting her back-to-front. Kaitlyn picks up Rosa and hits her with a sidewalk slam, going for a pin that ends at the 2-count.

Jeering from the hell corner lures Kaitlyn over there, and Rosa takes the chance to attack her with her back turned. She drags her toward the center of the ring and full-on slams her face into the mat repeatedly, stomping on her stomach for good measure. She then tags in Tamina, who strong-arms Kaitlyn into a clothesline. She then shoves her into the corner and chokes her against the 2nd turnbuckle, her foot on the back of Kaitlyn’s head. The referee objects, and with his back turned while he scolds Tamina, Rosa and Alicia get to work choking Kaitlyn. When Tamina returns to the corner, she tags in Alicia.

Alicia man-handles Kaitlyn a bit before tagging Rosa in. These quick tag-outs are, I assume, aimed at keeping Kaitlyn stranded and weakened, and it’s a nice strategy. She can hardly catch her breath before there’s a new set of hands grabbing her hair. Rosa kicks Kaitlyn in the back and goes for the pin, which Kaitlyn kicks out of. Meanwhile, in the babyface corner, Natalya and AJ are trying to will Kaitlyn to battle back. Rosa holds Kaitlyn in a sitting position, straddling her shoulder and wrenching her neck. Kaitlyn seems to gather strength from her teammates, shoving Rosa off and blasting her with a shoulder tackle worthy of an NFL game. Dazed, both Divas crawl to their corners and tag out: Kaitlyn to AJ, Rosa to Alicia.

AJ is too quick for Alicia, going on a flurry of offense punctuated by a reverse of a tilt-a-whirl slam that ends with her landing on Alicia. She continues to pepper in offense before going for a pin. Apparently, Alicia’s teammates don’t have much faith in her ability to kick out, because they both bust in and break the pin. This brings in only Natalya, since Kaitlyn’s still recuperating, and she manages to take out both Rosa and Tamina single-handely, planting both with a double clothesline. As the mat clears of the extraneous Divas, AJ and Alicia battle for control, performing a series of twisting Irish whip reversals that resemble a strange dance routine. Alicia wins the “dance”, kicking AJ in the chest and attempting a scissors kick that AJ ducks away from, slipping Alicia into a surprise schoolboy pin. The momentum and quickness of this pin earns AJ the 3-count and the win for her team. The babyfaces exit, celebrating while the heels look furious.

I really enjoyed that match: it gave each Diva sufficient ring time. The in-ring work was great and told a story, each Diva’s style showing through: Kaitlyn and Tamina were hard-hitting, Natalya was quick and technical, Alicia showed her long-limbed athleticism and AJ was just plain fast on her feet. These 6 Divas work really well together, and though it’s a pretty standard good-girls-versus-bad-girls story, I like how it gives a decent showcase to each of them. WWE Superstars is a great place for this to play out, since (as we’ve seen recently) massive Diva Tag Team matches on the bigger shows results in few Divas actually getting in the ring, hasty ring work and a jumbled story. This match is proof that a show like this is perfect for Divas matches: the matches (and the Divas themselves) get to breathe. More, I say, more!

And we do get more! This time, it’s Divas singles action. Melina makes her entrance first, followed by her opponent and horrible friend Gail Kim. Before the match can start, the two stand in the middle of the ring arguing. This isn’t your standard trash talking, and you can tell it’s personal because it’s well after the bell rings that they even start the match. Melina rebuffs a handshake, and they circle each other before finally starting with a collar-and-elbow tie-up. The match starts very similar to the way the 6-Diva tag match started, with Gail taking Melina to the mat with a side headlock and Melina taking control with a headscissors hold. Gail, like Natalya, breaks the hold quickly and goes for a clothesline, which Melina ducks Matrix-style. she whips around and slams Gail with a snapmare, going for a pin. Gail kicks out after the 1-count.

Melina whips Gail into the corner and charges. Gail dodges the attack by slipping through the ropes, performing a sunset flip over the ropes to roll Melina into a pin attempt. Melina kicks out, and the two begin to trade blows, Melina being whipped into the corner. She stops herself, using the corner as leverage to leap bakcwards over a charging Gail. She lands on her feet but appears to hurt her left knee in the process. The ref tends to her and Gail, being a true babyface, waits for her to recover. Melina limps into a tie-up attempt, but her knee gives out, and Gail doesn’t attack, holding her up. She gestures to the referee, and this distraction allows Melina to slam Gail face-first into the mat, her knee miraculously healed. What a perfectly executed opossum play!

Melina takes control, battering Gail and hitting her with a dropkick in the corner. She props her up against the bottom turnbuckle, yelling repeatedly, “You were my best friend!” and then “How am I ever going to believe you now?!” She punctuates this with a slap and eventually relents to the referee’s objections, backing off. She hoists Gail up for a body slam, but Gail uses her weight to force the momentum in her favor, landing on Melina for a pin attempt, which Melina kicks out of. Gail immediately goes for another pin, this time with a backslide maneuver. Melina kicks out again. Both get to their feet quickly, and Melina manages to attack first, hitting Gail with a spinning facebuster. This prompts a pin attempt, but Gail kicks out at the 2-count.

Melina quickly latches on a sleeper hold, but with a few well-placed elbows Gail frees herself. Melina regains control though, punching Gail against the ropes and into the corner. Gail eventually battles back, hitting Melina with a dropkick and a flying clothesline, delivering a shoulder to the stomach when Melina retreats to the corner. She jumps and lands on the back of Melina’s neck sticking through the ropes and then scales the turnbuckle, hitting her with a missile dropkick. Both are moving slow after the attack, but Gail tries to get Melina in position for a pin. Melina senses this and hooks her arms around the bottom rope, trying to save herself. She kicks Gail away and goes for another well-placed kick, but Gail ducks out of the way, allowing Melina to land in a split on the mat. In this prone position Gail rolls her over in a cradle, pinning her for the 3-count and the win.

Instead of celebrating, Gail seems more concerned with the look on Melina’s face. Melina looks cold and angry, and Gail tells her that she’s crazy and that she was her friend. It doesn’t look like this match settled anything. Gail doesn’t even seem happy to get one-up on Melina, probably because it’ll result in more conflict between them.

I really enjoyed that match because, like the 6-Diva tag match, it really allowed the Divas to show their true colors and flesh out their styles. Melina was intense and pulled an excellent trick on Gail, while Gail was sympathetic (perhaps unwisely) and quick with her attacks, but not malicious. The story told in this match was great, though we still have no idea why they aren’t friends anymore. Gail seems reluctant to fully hate her, while Melina is clearly wanting retribution for some personal slight. Melina’s evilness was on full display with her playing opossum, and I wonder if she’ll try it again, trying to take advantage of Gail’s sympathy. I can’t wait for the next chapter in this feud, and I hope that they’ll get the chance (whether on the internet or on television) to flesh out the story a bit more and shed some light on why Melina feels so wronged and why Gail thinks Melina needs a straight jacket.

Both matches this week were great, in my opinion. They were similar in a few ways (starting off with similar moves and ending with a surprise roll-up) but both offered different things: the tag match gave much needed in-ring exposure to a good number of SmackDown girls, while Gail and Melina’s match further solidified the rift between those two. I wouldn’t complain if these two storylines continued on WWE Superstars, since it’s clear that the Divas matches on this show will, more often than not, be better and longer than those on the bigger TV shows. It’s kind of fitting that the internet seems to be a haven for Divas, with Gail and Melina fleshing out their storyline on Twitter and YouTube and the internet-only WWE Superstars giving them a place for matches that don’t end in the blink of an eye. I say, use it to your advantage, Divas! The internet is a big place, and Raw and SmackDown are only 2-hour shows. The limits surrounding the Divas somehow seem to be lessened in this light, and I love it.

Kelly Kelly Talks About Her Divas Title Win

95

New Divas Champion, Kelly Kelly, is highlighted on WWE.com in an article about her victory this past Monday on Raw.

Kelly says:

“The biggest compliment for me was the fans voting for me on Raw. I feel like the fans have really connected with me for five years. I think some might see me as the underdog – always working hard, but just never getting a chance.”

On the other Divas’ reactions, she adds:

“The Divas were standing there by the locker room, waiting and clapping for me. I’ve never been injured. I’ve worked the live events five years straight with no real off weeks. I’ve worked so hard for this, and I think the other Divas recognized that.”

Allison Danger Unveils ‘Womanist Revolution’

23

Independent wrestler Allison Danger, who had been teasing a revolution of some sort in the past few weeks, has today announced exactly what she means.

Writing on her blog, Danger revealed that she is spearheading a ‘womanist revolution’ in wrestling.

She writes:

[notice]
The time has come where I take this term “womanist” and make it my own. Not just for my sake but for the sake of women wrestlers and the fans who know that change MUST happen now.

Female wrestlers-how sick and tired are you of men in suits in their offices telling us “Oh, yeah, you are great but you need to surgery/weight loss/look like every other female on the roster to really be considered”? Notice how the terms “train harder at practice” or “improve your in-ring skills” are not a part of this. Why do fans walk out during our matches? Why should we be the popcorn or piss break? Because for too long now we have been told our looks are the only thing people want to see. And history has proved my theory. We as wrestlers have become complacent. Why work harder when some fake hair and a crash diet are all we need to succeed? This is simply not good enough anymore. And if you think it is good enough, then this revolution is not for you. Be prepared to get out of my way and the way of those who are ready to fight for change.

Now don’t misconstrue this as an “anti-plastic surgery” rant. You want something larger/smaller/completely different then go on with your bad self. I am not here to judge and I will openly admit that I nearly went down that path myself. But never let anything overshadow your passion for wrestling. Never let it take down your desire to improve, to grow, to be the best WRESTLER you can be. Do not let it make you lazy. Do not rest your laurels simply on your cup size.

It is time we show offices and fans alike that looking different makes us special, not unemployable. But at the end of the day, what is most important is our performance. Are you not sick of being told “eh, you are ok for a girl”? I am. But I can’t potentially change a mind without looking at myself, seeing where I need improvement and actually DOING IT. I feel fortunate that there are women in this business who are leading by example. Despite their years in wrestling they have not once stopped trying to be better. Without knowing it, they are my inspiration. Despite the cattiness people assume when females are involved, I am happy for the successes of these peers and will continue to cheer them on. I would rather delight in some healthy competition and try to rise to their level than attempt to discredit them or hold them back to my level or lower. Ladies, let us delight in the successes of hardworking peers and hold ourselves to a higher standard.

Bookers/Writers- When did pride stop being a reason for a match? Why, when woman are involved, must it be about “bitch, you stole my man” or “I can’t believe she is wearing my/that outfit” or “everyone is just jealous of my beauty”? Until you start booking female wrestlers under 17 how about we keep that high school booking out of it? Why, in certain promotions, must every female be associated with a male wrestler (usually in a sexual context) to be considered worthy of tv or ring time? A women’s division should be just that: a division of female wrestlers. Make it about pride, about sport, about who is the best wrestler, about gold. Please stop turning this into a silly catfight that undermines both the talent and the fans. A possible rule of thumb: If Maury Povich would have a show on it then maybe its not meant for a wrestling storyline.

If your females are drawing the best ratings don’t cut their time and segments. Why punish them for being successful? Maybe tighten up YOUR work and give everyone better storylines. There is so much tremendous talent, contracted and not, but EVERYONE within a promotion and company pull their weight for the better of the product. From the music guy to the ring crew to the wrestlers to the promoters/owners-we all have to pull together and work as a cohesive to take all of professional wrestling to another level.

Fans-Just as there are different genres of wrestling, they are different genres of fans. For those who see female wrestling simply as fodder for your tissue soiling, please know deep down you are not and never will be my motivation as a wrestler. What you and your genitalia do on your own time has nothing to do with me and my performance. For the fans who simply hate women in wrestling and have permanently closed your mind to the possibility, best wishes to you. You are as hopeless a cause to me as I am to you. This revolution is for those who love us/hate us/indifferent to us but whose hearts open to the potential of what women’s wrestling can be. You have a voice. Use it proactively. If you hate what is on television then shut it off! Find what you do like and respect and support them. If you hate American female wrestling, don’t punish the Joshi scene, give it a shot. If there are 32 flavors of ice cream, why limit yourself to vanilla or chocolate? Have a favorite female independent wrestler, especially one who does not fit the “mold”? Show your support. Follow them on Twitter, come to indy shows they are on, rock their shirts. But please show your support in a respectful manner. Emailing powers that be with “you are an idiot if you don’t hire XYZ” will just fall on deaf ears. Posting on message boards that “Wrestler XYZ is the greatest ever nuf said” then sticking your fingers in your ears will fail you every time.

If everyone does their part we can, as a whole, bring female wrestling to a whole other level. We can rise like a phoenix from the ashes. Let us take back female wrestling and show that, if done right, 32 flavors can be incredible.

I am aware that in past years, I have sinned against what I am preaching now. But by fronting this revolution, I accept my mistakes, I accept my responsibilities and I pledge to give 100% to changing the future. My signature below is my promise to the Womanist Revolution.

I am Allison Danger and I am your Feminist Icon.[/notice]

Danger will be debuting for WSU this Saturday, facing Cindy Rogers in the latter’s retirement match.

It looks like Christina Crawford has been re-signed by WWE. She and newcomer, Irena Janjic, debuted at an FCW house show last night.

Christina recently appeared on WWE Tough Enough after being released from her previous developmental contract to take part in the show. She was the last female contestant standing on the show.

Meanwhile, Janjic is a former trainee of Lance Storm’s wrestling academy, and was most notably showcased on the opening episode of Canadian series, World of Hurt. She was signed earlier this year alongside fellow Storm Academy trainee, Tenille. Tenille has yet to debut in FCW.

The duo teamed up to face fellow FCW Divas, Audrey Marie and Sonia, in tag team action but came out on the losing end as Irena was rolled up for the pinfall.
