30 Influential LGBTQ Wrestlers, June 7: Cassandro

It is June, and that means the LGBTQ community gets to celebrate extra hard about being ourselves every day for the whole month! Because of that, every day throughout the month, we are going to spotlight one LGBTQ+ wrestler. These names are not going to be in any order, so this won’t be a countdown but more of a highlight to celebrate.

On June 7, we are going to celebrate Cassandro. Here at Diva Dirt, we do not highlight men very often, but some men can be Divas too.

Cassandro is a Mexican Luchador who was born in El Paso, Texas, but spent a lot of time in Juárez, Chihuahua. The Queen of Lucha Libre and a legend, he is openly gay. After a year into the business in the late 80’s, Cassandro adopted an exotico character, which are male characters dressed up in drag, representing gay caricatures. Most talent who did the exotico characters were actually straight, but Cassandro is not.

Cassandro did not go by this name right away, but he would adopt it from a Tijuana brothel owner named Cassandra. He worked most of his career on the indies and has worked in Mexican promotions such as Universal Wrestling Association and Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide.

In 2009, Cassandro signed a contract with TNA. He debuted during a dark match against Petey Williams, however, he never did debut on TV. Promos were aired hyping up his debut, but TNA and Cassandro parted ways. He cites his departure due to homophobia. In 2011, Cassandro won the NWA World Welterweight Championship. He held this title for 1,331 days.

Cassandro retired in 2022, and in 2023, a biopic about his life was made and streamed on Amazon Prime. Gael García Bernal played Cassandro, and the film had Bad Bunny play the role of Felipe, his assistant.
