SmackDown Redux (March 17th, 2016): The Triple Threat Shade-Fest

Hello readers and welcome to this week’s Smackdown Redux! On The Road to WrestleMania, all bets are off as the triple threat match for the Divas Championship heats up with champion Charlotte‘s constant goading of her challengers Sasha Banks and Becky Lynch.

This week, Charlotte invited both Sasha and Becky to have a face to face to face confrontation in the middle of the ring. What words will be said? Will this end in chaos? Let’s get to it!

Charlotte makes her way to the ring with her Hall of Fame pops, Ric Flair. She starts her diatribe by stating her and her opponent at WrestleMania have known each other for almost her entire adult life and that she would not be where she is today without those two. So she hopes that they can remember their story past in NXT and accept her invitation to speak in the ring and out comes Becky Lynch.

After trying to figure out where was Sasha, Charlotte tries to patch things up by saying she could always count on “Bex”. The LassKicker cuts her off by saying the only thing she could count on is Becky winning the Divas Championship at WrestleMania. Charlotte tries to get a rebuttal in, bit is cut off by Sasha Banks’ theme. The Boss is on her way to the ring!

When Sasha enters the ring she immediately lets Charlotte know that she is a boss and she’s on her own schedule. Becky is tired of the arguing in Charlotte agrees and she reminds him of the time they were in NXT and she was impressed by them and she talked her dad and explain how impressed she was by their ability and Ric Flair that they remind him of the Horsemen.

Charlotte goes on to say that she owes a lot of people an apology Sasha, Becky, the fans, and Ric Flair. And her apology is that she ever thought that they were worthy of being called Horsewomen. Becky quips that she was waiting for the real Charlotte to show up and she’s finally here and Sasha ask Charlotte why would she bring them out there just to embarrass them.

Becky and that she does not care what she’s called because at WrestleMania he is going to break Charlotte’s arm and become the new WWE Divas Champion.

Sasha Banks begs to differ and give us all a history lesson by reminding us that she was the woman to defeat Charlotte for the NXT Women’s Championship as well as since making her debut on the main roster has yet to be pinned or submitted. You have more than proven her case to have this match WrestleMania and tells Becky that she’s had her chance already. Becky clocks back saying that she still has on her way to the championship match at WrestleMania and she would be Divas Champion if it wasn’t for Ric for his interference in her match at the Royal Rumble. Becky keeps the shade going when she follows up by saying where she is from if you are a boss you don’t need a self inflated ego and Dollar Store jewelry.

Sasha is clearly feeling some type of way about this because she starts taking off her jewelry and it looks like it’s time to fight. 4267 chatted back and forth when they realize that Charlotte is laughing at her work coming to fruition and then they divert their attention to Charlotte with a suplex from Becky and a backstabber from Sasha. Charlotte cowers out of the ring and Becky and Sasha getting her face to end the segment.

Thoughts: Wow, what a segment! I love the story that is being told with these women on The Road to WrestleMania. In many ways, Charlotte is the one that created the 4 Horsewomen stable and it only makes sense now that she, as a heel, is trying to destroy what she created in order to give herself the advantage of Wrestlemania.

As far as this segment goes, I think all three of these women shined equally but I have to give a lot of credit for the evolution of Charlotte’s character. I love the prissy, spoiled, little rich girl kind of angle they have running with her. I think of the attacks, and different ways to try to pit Becky and Sasha against each other after my children and I think that finally letting them attack her it was a great move. It was also good that they didn’t get too much offense on her and she was smart enough to power out of the ring. I think it’s also cool that Ric Flair was used sparingly in the segment he was just there to walk with her come to the ring and be part of the topic of the problem but not be overly involved it let the women shine and he wasn’t a distraction this week major bonus with me.

Another major bonus for me was the fact that Sasha finally addressing the fact that she not only defeated Charlotte for the NXT Women’s Championship but is also undefeated on the main roster. It allows there to be a sound byte for the promo video for Wrestlemania and also adds credibility for her being one of the contenders.

And now we talk about Becky, who is really showing that she is a great baby face and this episode of SmackDown to really prove to be old school she was there there to talk about the match and whatever was going on and she took no prisoners and she didn’t cower to anyone. I think the narrative of 2016 hopefully, is how Becky Lynch propelled herself to become the number one babyface in the Divas division.

All in all I think this was a great piece of build-up for the triple threat match at WrestleMania. And even watching it I got quasi emotional because I can’t believe that we’ve come to a point in the WWE where the women are getting the opportunity to have an actual story being told months before the match at WrestleMania instead of years past where we found out the RAW before WrestleMania what the Divas match would be. And all three of these women are taking the ball and running with it. Charlotte is doing a great job of trying to pull the puppet strings and trying to come up with a grand plan to retain her title. Sasha is doing a phenomenal job of keeping her character alive and especially this week proving her point of being in the championship match by yet to lose a match. And Becky Lynch is doing a great job of being the Babyface Underdog and the wildcard in this match. Fingers crossed that we get a swerve and Becky wins the title, but it really doesn’t matter because the fact that we’ve gotten this much buildup, this much anticipation, and this much storytelling is a triumph in it of itself.

I guess it safe to say that I have a more glowing review of SmackDown this week than I did last week. I like seeing stories me move forward on this show yes it is the be so but if they continue to have moments matches and segments like they’ve been doing for the majority of this year so far tonight so I can regain some prominence as a show that deserves to be watched because you may miss something important.

And now I turn it over to you what did you think of this week’s segment? Let me know in the comments and as always, thank you for reading!

WWE Main Event Redux (March 18th, 2016): Lana Puts Some Pep in Her Step

0

Once again, it’s time for a Main Event Redux! This week, we witness the continued development of the Divas division’s B-feud when Paige takes on Summer Rae. Lana also puts in an appearance, following up on her face-off with the Anti Diva on Raw and mixing things up a bit.

Let’s watch!

Entrances done and the bell rung, the Divas start the match by tying up, Paige taking Summer down for an early pin attempt. Summer kicks out, but Paige takes her down once more for another unsuccessful pin attempt. Paige pulls Summer to her feet and hits her with a headbutt. Summer crawls to a corner, where Paige lays into her with a few stomps to the chest.

Summer slowly gets to her feet and blocks Paige’s flying knee attempt, vaulting her over the ropes and onto the apron. Paige fends off her follow up attack, nailing her with a right hand that sends her to the mat. Before Paige can reenter the ring, though, she’s interrupted by the entrance of Lana. Summer tries to take advantage of the distraction, but Paige stops her, hitting her with knees to the chest. Summer stops the barrage and knocks Paige off the apron as Lana makes her way to the announce table and sits on top of it.

Summer slams Paige’s face into the ring apron before tossing her back into the ring. She follows Paige and chokes her against the middle rope before propping her up in the corner and doing the same with her boot. Summer roughly yanks Paige to the middle of the ring. She covers Paige for the pin, but Paige kicks out. Summer locks in a headlock, but it’s short lived. Paige battles out and runs the ropes, only to be hit with a spinning heel kick. Summer goes for another pin, but Paige kicks out again.

Summer locks in another headlock, but Paige manages to fight out of it again, tossing Summer across the ring. Paige kicks her repeatedly, sending her into the corner for a flying knee attack. She follows that up with a running knee to the face and a pin attempt. Summer kicks out. Paige acknowledges Lana’s presence with an air kiss before planting Summer with a superkick. Lana climbs up onto the ring apron, distracting Paige and allowing Summer to roll her up for a pin attempt. Paige kicks out and rolls through into a pin of her own, earning the three count and the win.

Immediately after scoring the win, Paige goes after Lana, pulling her into the ring by her hair. Summer comes to her old foe’s rescue, knocking Paige down and allowing Lana to flatten Paige with a high kick! Lana exits as Paige lays on the mat, stunned.

Thoughts: This was an incredibly short match, but it served the purpose of furthering a storyline, so I can’t be too mad at it. Lana’s M.O. has been a bit repetitive as of late, so it was thrilling to see someone actually get physical with her. Paige was the perfect candidate for that, as the Queen of Not Giving a Fuck.

It was definitely strange to see Summer, of all people, come to Lana’s aid, but it makes sense. Lana, I believe, is actively recruiting Divas to her side. She did so with Naomi and Tamina on Raw, and she’s probably done the same with Summer prior to this match. What her or their motivations are is anybody’s guess, but it’s not completely out of character for Summer to align herself with someone on a whim. I mean, it’s kind of her thing, right?

Lana’s kick to Paige was impressive, especially since I definitely didn’t see her busting out something like that outside of a match. She’s been hitting Bella Busters all over the place, but a high kick in a miniskirt isn’t exactly easy. It was a nice choice, too, as it plays into the idea that Rusev has been teaching her hard-hitting moves and preparing her for this occasion. I’d like to learn more about why she’s doing this, though: why did she initially target Brie Bella? I know why she took out Paige – their face-off on Raw explains that pretty tidily – but this all started with Lana taking a shine to Brie. Maybe it’s as simple as Lana getting tired of the “mediocre” Divas and wanting to weed them out so she can carve out a path for herself as a competitor in the division. With that as her motivation, recruiting heel Divas to her cause would be simple: taking out the babyfaces means less competition for them, so they should simply target them together.

I’m sure this will be fleshed out in time for the (likely) match at WrestleMania. However tenuous the connection between these Divas is, I’m content seeing them interact and acknowledge their shared pasts while fighting to achieve a common goal. If Lana’s interaction with Naomi and Tamina was any indication, this could be entertaining as hell. In fact, this tag match could achieve something multi-Diva tag matches have never been able to before: allowing the Divas to stand out while standing together.

Usually, in these kinds of matches, the Divas blend together into two monolithic groups: good guys and bad guys. Here, that’s definitely not the case. By having this feud start between two women and expand out to include several, the WWE is ensuring that motivations and relationships are explored as others are recruited to the competing sides. It’s so simple, and yet seeing it play out like this makes it feel almost revolutionary. This isn’t a case of “all women secretly hate each other” – it’s “women have competing desires, experiences, motivations, likes, dislikes, dispositions, etc.” And really, that’s all I’ve ever wanted from the Divas division: for the Divas to be treated like real, breathing women. You’d be surprised how quickly compelling characters and stories develop once that simple hurdle is passed.

Video: Stephanie McMahon Talks Tough Women and Playing a Villain on ‘Rachael Ray Show’

WWE Chief Brand Officer Stephanie McMahon appeared on this morning’s Rachael Ray Show, discussing the importance of the female roles within the WWE, playing a villain on television and more.

When discussing the process of playing a heel, Stephanie recounted how she paid a visit to a children’s hospital to announce the WWE’s new partnership for Connor’s Cure and then that night went on television to play her villainous character. She says a business associate had to ask someone if she was the same woman who was hugging sick children earlier that day.

Stephanie reveals the 40% of the WWE’s viewership is female, which she credits their team and the success of Total Divas with drawing in. She explains that the Divas are more than just wrestlers: they do public speaking, make appearances on television, make film cameos, attend red carpet events and do community service activities.

When asked if her husband Triple H would agree with her belief that women are tougher than men, she says he absolutely would.

Lucha Underground Analysis (March 16th, 2016): Ivelisse Goes For the Gold

0

Gold, bloodbaths and passionate snogging – of course, that means it’s time for another episode of Lucha Underground! Ivelisse, Son of Havoc and Angelico gun for gold this week against the Disciples of Death. Should Ive’s team lose, they are banished from the Temple forever! We got an update on Black Lotus‘ situation as well last night, and Catrina made her presence felt in a major way. She did the kissing, and I’ll be telling you all about it!

Catrina is up first this week. She confronts Fenix, telling him she wonders if going back to Mil Muertes and abandoning him last season was the right decision:

They then have a full-on make-out session… awkward! Cat says that what just happened was their final kiss, and tonight, when Mil is finished with Fenix, he will bring her back from the dead. Not sure how that is going to work, but I’m sure we’ll find out shortly!

The Trios Tag Title match is up first, and of course, Catrina is at ringside with her boys, whose names are so complicated that I’ll refrain from mentioning them! All six combatants are in the ring to start out the match, the faces taking over in style with a running attack each to all three of the Disciples! Velez hits a nice enziguri to the purple Disciple before the champions start to get back into the match. Ive is left alone in the ring, prone to a gorgeous springboard dropkick from the grey Disciple. He might be Bario Negro, I can’t quite remember all of their names! Foreshadowing to later on, I might not need to know their names…

Ivelisse is isolated in the ring, whacked in the face with a big kick from the golden Disciple. Purple Disciple hits a clothesline before targeting her historically injured leg, the bane of her life last season. A stretch muffler is applied until Ivelisse is straight out choked. Lovely. What really is lovely in a non-sarcastic way are Ive’s counters to a dragon sleeper and suplex attempt, sequences that allow her to escape further danger and make that hot tag!

Flips and pele kicks later and Ivelisse is back in the match, diving to the outside as Havoc hits a moonsault and Angelico hits a diving attack – amazing synergy! Catrina pulls Son of Havok off the apron to avoid his team getting those titles, but it is to no avail. Shortly after, the deal is then sealed with Son of Havoc hitting a Shooting Star Press. Ivelisse is not only the first female to hold gold, but the first to be a two-time champion!

After the match, Mil is suuuuuuper pissed, and he seemingly kills off the Disciples of Death. Actual thunder is coming out of his body, so I presume those guys will have gotten electrocuted!

Immediately after that shocking moment, it is time for an even bigger one:

We see Black Lotus and Dario Cueto outside of their illegal fight club. Dario decides that Matanza has enough bloodlust necessary to help him take back the Temple. But wait, didn’t they leave because the police would have been after Black Lotus for murdering the original El Dragon Azteca? This part needs fleshing out a little further. I suppose Matanza is just big enough and strong enough to kill any cops himself. Matanza emerges from the warehouse, absolutely covered in blood… WITH A KNIFE STICKING OUT OF HIM! Oh my god. If you haven’t already twigged on by now Lotus, I guess that he did in fact kill your parents and Dario lied to you. But well, what you did killing El Dragon is inexcusable so you’ll just have to be a badass antagonist I can like as opposed to that vengeful babyface I so desperately wanted you to be!

Finally, following Mil Muertes’s LOSS of the Lucha Underground Title to Fenix, Catrina quickly grabs a mic and she spits some major venom. She tells Fenix he better really soak up that celebration because next week’s Aztec Warfare has changed. It is no longer for the number one contendership – it is for the championship! Just like last year, Fenix will enter at Number One and Mil will enter at Number Twenty. *mic drop*

Considering this was taped months ago, I guess we know where WWE got the idea from to have Roman Reigns to defend the WWE Title in the Royal Rumble! What I am more concerned with though is whether any girls will be in the match. My money is on Kobra Moon and Sexy Star, the latter eliminated by an interfering Mariposa!

Thoughts: What a win for Ivelisse, Son of Havoc and Angelico! The match was tons of fun, although not as memorable for me as the winners’ ladder match. Saying that, due to Ivelisse’s injury then, she got to show more of what she can do in last night’s match. Her hurricanrana on the outside was sweet, as was her dive when the three faces took to the skies.

Whilst I think Ivelisse shines on the mic most out of the three, I feel that she is often overshadowed in the ring by her teammates, with the exception of her getting that amazing title chance against Mil Muertes. I hope Ivelisse gets to showcase her innovative style a little more. This match had her get beat down until she got the hot tag. Wouldn’t it be cool to see the roles reversed and have her receive that hot tag? I know that it’s logical for her to play the role she did tonight as she is the least strong of the six people in the match, but we can suspend reality a little more – that’s ok with us Lucha Underground. We are watching murders unfold in front of our very eyes and there’s a man controlled by a rock.

Speaking of that very man, Mil Muertes and Catrina’s world crumbled to ashes all in one night. Ironic considering Mil lost to Fenix. As for next week’s Aztec Warfare, the return of Dario, Black Lotus and Matanza to the Temple might just be the final nail in the coffin of those from beyond the grave. Watch out Catrina, I think a poisonous flower and her entourage are headed straight for you.

NXT Redux (March 16th, 2016): TakeOver Gains a Showstopper

0

With mere weeks separating us from NXT TakeOver: Dallas, we finally know how NXT Women’s Champion Bayley will be spending that night. She will defend her title against the phenom Asuka, presenting us with an intriguing scenario: will Bayley lose the title, or will Asuka suffer her first loss?

Before that match could be booked, though, those Divas had to prove themselves against two foes determined to wedge their way into the title picture in Asuka’s stead: Eva Marie and Nia Jax.

Meanwhile, Emma continues to stoke the fires of the Emmalution with a match against the newest target of her ire, Deonna Purrazzo.

We kick off the night’s Divas action with that very angle when Emma and Dana Brooke come across Deonna backstage:

They run into Deionna Purrazzo, who they mock for getting beaten by Asuka (again) a few weeks ago. Emma says it’s nothing compared to what she’ll do to her tonight, because the Emmalution can’t stop, won’t stop. Deanna says it can be stopped, and she’ll be the one to do it – tonight.

Emma and Dana laugh at Deonna’s confidence, and though Dana promises to take her seriously, she can’t resist giving her a head pat.

Immediately following that, we head to ringside for the match. After their entrances and the opening bell, Emma starts the match with a display of disrespect, shoving Deonna around. Deonna answers with a big shove of her own, earning herself a pummeling from Emma. Emma snapmares her to the mat and stands on her hair before following her to the ropes, wrapping her in them and yanking her hair once more.

Emma goes for a double undertook suplex, but Deonna starts to fight back. Emma halts her momentum, though, with a clothesline that flattens her. Deanna heads to a corner, where Emma stomps her in the midsection and chokes her. Emma traps Deonna in the tree of woe, pulling her up by her hair to land kicks to her spine. With Deonna slouched to the mat, Emma hits her with the Emmamite Sandwich.

Emma stays on Deonna, standing on her throat before kicking her back. She then locks in a headlock, taking a struggling Deonna to the mat.?? Deonna soon gets to her feet, using elbows and a jaw jacking to free herself. She goes on an offensive streak, nailing a kick to Emma’s chest that stuns her. When she charges for a corner attack, though, Emma dodges it, sending her straight into the turnbuckle. This allows Emma to lock in the Dilemma for a few moments. When she relinquishes that hold, though, it’s only to lock in the Emma Lock, which prompts a quick tap out from Deonna.

We also got a glimpse at the action at the NXT events at the Arnold Classic two weeks ago:

A bit later, it’s time for more Diva action! Bayley and Asuka team up to face Eva Marie and Nia Jax:

Nia and Bayley start the match for their teams. Nia quickly takes control, tossing Bayley to her corner and tagging in Eva. When Eva goes make a move, though, Bayley takes her to the mat with a drop toehold and embarrasses her. She locks in a front facelock and takes Eva to her corner, where Asuka tags herself in. Eva frantically tries to escape, but Asuka blocks her way to freedom. After a bit of hesitation, Eva hits Asuka with a forearm. This only fires up Asuka, who ducks her follow-up slaps and proceeds to nail her with knees to the face.

Asuka hits Eva with a series of vicious kicks. Eva manages to send Asuka into the ropes, but she’s greeted with Asuka’s flying hip attack on the return. Asuka pulls Eva to her feet and takes her to her corner, where Bayley enters the match. Bayley resumes Asuka’s front facelock, but Eva manages to get free and lock in a side headlock. She hits the ropes, where Nia covertly tags herself in. Bayley takes Eva to the mat and doesn’t notice Nia approaching her from behind, allowing Nia to scoop her up and take her down with a Samoan drop.

Nia takes Bayley back to her corner and tags in Eva, who promptly locks in a submission on Bayley, focusing on the champ’s back and shoulders. Bayley soon fights out, rolling Eva up for a pin attempt. Eva kicks out, but soon finds herself in another pinning combination. That one’s no good either, and Eva quickly gets to her feet and attempts to isolate Bayley by taking out Asuka. Her slap has little effect, and when she turns her attention back to Bayley, she’s taken down with a suplex. Bayley goes for the pin, but sees Nia approaching to break it up. She goes for a legdrop, which Bayley evades, leaving Eva to take the move herself.

Nia moves to leave the ring and Bayley helps her, dropkicking her to the outside. Eva is all alone, and a kick to the back of the neck from Asuka leads her right into a Bayley-to-Belly suplex! Bayley covers Eva for the pin and the win.

Bayley and Asuka stand tall and Nia collects Eva and departs. Before the winning duo can leave, they’re greeted by NXT GM William Regal, who stands at the top of the ramp and addresses them on the microphone. Her congratulates them on their recent accomplishments, hyping their talent. He then makes a big announcement: Bayley will defend her NXT Women’s Title at TakeOver: Dallas against Asuka!

Bayley looks a little uneasy, while Asuka’s face is plastered with her trademark grin. It’s on!

Post-show, Bayley talked about that match and the road that’s lead to it:

Thoughts: Following last week’s Diva-less show with two Divas matches was a nice touch. And, though neither match set the world on fire, the stories they told more than made up for it. You had Emma and Dana’s continued dominance, more focus on the should-be-Diva Deonna, Eva and Nia’s complicated partnership and the burgeoning feud between fan favorites Asuka and Bayley.

Even though she’s gotten handedly beaten every time, I’m still intrigued by NXT’s use of Deonna. She’s almost like a newbie Diva, losing matches but being written to earn the audience’s sympathy. I know this is mainly serving to emphasize Emma and Dana’s bully tendencies, but not even Blue Pants got this much mic time. Emma dominated her and proved her point, but I feel like we’re moving towards a point where someone will “put her in her place.” I’m not sure who that will be, but the focus on Deonna makes her an obvious choice. Though, it would make a lot more sense for her to open the door for a debuting Diva to do the job. Athena, please!

Seeing Eva and Nia’s alliance blow up in their face a bit was interesting. It would lead one to believe that Nia might be forced to reevaluate the situation: if the strategy of doing the heavy lifting and handing (or trying to hand) Eva all the glory isn’t producing victories, why is she doing it? I hope we see some tension between them, if only to lead to an explanation as to why Nia’s doing this, switching from the fearsome undefeated Diva to Eva’s errand girl. Playing that role isn’t necessarily a bad thing, especially for a heel, but that’s only if we know why she’s doing it.

Bayley vs. Asuka has the potential to be Match of the Year, and I’m so ready for it. Aside from the obvious barnburner these two could put on, it’s ballsy for NXT to pit the division’s two most popular Divas against each other. While it’s easy to see why they’d do it, given how easy it will be to get the fan’s psyched for the encounter, it’s a story that would have been shied away from not too long ago. NXT is definitely changing the game when it comes to face-versus-face and heel-versus-heel matches, but this will probably be the biggest challenge of all: allowing fans to side with the Diva they favor without fear that either’s popularity will suffer as a result.

Bayley might get booed, Asuka might get booed, but at the end of the day, both will emerge having wrestled a match that will, in all likelihood, put jaws on the floor. How does that quote go? “The person who risks nothing, does nothing, has nothing, is nothing, and becomes nothing.” As much as that applies to the Divas, it also speaks to the division as a whole. Pushing barriers and changing the status quo is what put NXT’s Divas division on the map in the first place. If all goes as planned, this match will be yet another moment where NXT changes the game for good.

Bayley vs. Asuka Announced for NXT TakeOver: Dallas

NXT Women’s Champion Bayley‘s next title defense has been booked for NXT TakeOver: Dallas.

As announced on tonight’s NXT, she will defend her title against Asuka.

NXT GM William Regal made the match official following Bayley and Asuka’s tag team victory over Eva Marie and Nia Jax. This will be Bayley’s sixth title defense.

NXT TakeOver: Dallas will take place Friday, April 1st and will air live on the WWE Network starting at 8pm ET.

Impact Write-Up (March 15th, 2016): Maria Pulls Out a Miraculous Victory

0

After seven long weeks overseas, TNA have found their way back to US soil and have retraced their steps back to the good old Impact Zone. To make this home coming return a little more special, we’re celebrating this week’s Impact with a semi-live episode! Yay for a night of some almost spoil-free material!

Despite a self-declaration that she would never ever compete in a ring, Maria Kanellis makes her TNA ring debut this week, as she teams up with hubby Mike Bennett to take on the team of Drew Galloway and Knockouts Champion Gail Kim. Also making her surprise TNA ring debut this week is Rosemary, when she teams up with her boys Abyss and Crazzy Steve to do battle against newly crowned TNA Tag Team Champions Beer Money and Eddie Edwards in a Six-Person Intergender Tag Team match.

Our first female siting comes in the form of none other than Madam Dixie Carter. The TNA President makes a brief appearance during Jeff Hardy‘s return match against Eric Young to raise the stakes a bit:

She announces that the winner of the match would be added to the main event TNA World Heavyweight Title match to square off against Ethan Carter III and the champion himself, Matt Hardy.

After Jeff Hardy wins his match, he gets a visit from big brother Matt and sister-in-law Reby Sky. The couple tries to sweet talk Jeff out of competing in the main event. Reby using Baby Hardy as an instrument of smoothing things out with Jeff and Matt Hardy promising his brother a one-on-one title match at Bound for Glory 2018! (LOL) Jeff rejects all of this and ends the segment with a Twist of Faith to Matt.

Ahead of our big mixed tag match, the Bennetts have a few choice words to their opponents, both whom have yet to be impressed by TNA’s sanctified couple:

The Bennetts relive the night when they first arrived to TNA, coming into the company with the promise of bringing change. Tonight, they will once again prove the change they’ve brought, as a courageous Maria isn’t going to back down from Gail, while Mike promises to deliver another ass kicking to Drew Galloway.

The Bennetts make their entrance first, Maria introducing her husband in the signature manner that we’ve now grown accustom to. They spot matching his and hers ring attires as they wait for the arrival of their opponents. Gail is out next but she waits for her partner to join her before entering the six side ring. A long stare down commences once all of the competitors have made their entrances.

The Knockouts Champion insists that the women start things off but that only lasts for about three seconds as Maria quickly tags her husband, forcing Gail to make a tag under these mixed tag rules. Drew rapidly disposes of Mike and makes a tag to his partner so that they collectively hit their corner clotheslines. Gail calls out Maria to enter this match again!

Maria is hesitant and Gail lets her frustration out on Mike. She lands a fury of punches to Mike and runs the ropes, where Maria sees an opening to lug Gail to the outside ring by extending the ropes. The Knockouts champion fumbles to grounds floor and Maria lands her first offense to Gail with a kick to the gut. A more confident Maria tosses Gail back to the ring to inflict more damage, going back and forth with slaps and stomping kicks. Maria follows up by running the ropes for a running elbow drop but misses when Gail rolls out the way.

Just when Gail makes it back to her feet, Maria retreats to the corner of her husband to avoid anymore confrontation with Gail. Drew brings the fight to Mike within close range of his wife, taunting her while fighting off her husband. When Mike manages to fend off Drew from a turnbuckle, he turns to his wife to make a much needed tag.

Maria obliges and tries to prevent Drew from reaching Gail but it’s no use as Drew simply overpowers her. He makes the tag to his partner and Ninja Kim soars across the ring to knock Mike off the ring apron with a dropkick. With nowhere to turn, Maria is stranded face to face with Gail, who looks to hit an Eat Defeat to the so-called woman of change. Mike quickly runs in to make the save for his wife but ends up getting an Eat Defeat instead. In the heat of the moment, a distracted Gail is rolled up from behind Maria, who pins Gail down for three count and win!

We move on to our second tag match of the night, this time it being under intergender rules.

After Eddie Edwards agreed to join forces with Beer Money, Abyss and Crazzy Steve were left to find a partner to team up with them. They looked no further than their manager Rosemary, who says her opponent have never met a girl like her before.

For the most part, Rosemary stood at her corner and infrequently got involved to pester Bobby Roode, a strategy that nearly caused her to be double suplex. However, it was Rosemary’s Kiss of Death mist that blinded Roode and distracted Eddie Edwards long enough to be rolled up by Crazzy Steve from behind for The Decay to walk out victorious! Those damn roll-ups pins are deadly.

Finally, we are treated to a heated exchange of words between Mr. and Mrs. Hardy and Dixie Carter:

The TNA President was casually tweeting out fans to set their DVR past the 11 PM mark on her iPad when Reby blasted Dixie for stacking the deck against her husband. “You’re decisions, they lack logic. Why would you cut off your nose to spite your face?” Not bad of a promo from Reby Sky here! Dixie defends her decisions of adding Jeff Hardy to the main event scene and adds one more detail to the match: a No DQ stipulation!

**SPOILER ALERT** Drew Galloway wins the title from Matt Hardy after cashing his briefcase following a cluster run-in style of a match! Congrats Drew!

Thoughts: While we did see two TNA ring debuts in one night this week, there wasn’t a whole lot to go on to fully discussing about it. Both Maria and Rosemary were very limited in these tag matches, not the most impressive or memorable way for a debut match, but they did handle their matches in different manners.

Rosemary stayed keen on her character and wasn’t really afraid to mix it up with her opponents where as Maria did everything she could to avoid any psychical contact in her match. In terms of storyline, I did enjoy the Bennetts versus Gail/Drew match as there was a story being told throughout the match. We saw Gail do whatever she could to get to Maria, even if it meant fighting off Mike with dropkicks, teamwork with Drew and that sick Eat Defeat. For her part, Maria played on her cowardly persona by tagging in her husband when she was in danger and pulled out the surprise victory.

My only real question is where do we go from here? Sure, Maria may have earned some “bragging rights” after pinning the Knockouts champion but are we expected to see her turn into an occasional wrestler now? Will this feud between Maria and Gail carry on to a possible PPV event such as Slammiversary? As always, only time will tell.

Joshi Wrestling Weekly (March 15th, 2016): Kaho Kobayashi Spotlight

[media-credit name=”Photo: yahoo.co.jp” align=”aligncenter” width=”620″]Best Friends vs. Io Shirai and Mayu Iwatani[/media-credit]

Welcome back to a new edition of the Joshi Wrestling Weekly! I know it has been awhile, but we are now looking to bring back this column as a regular feature on Diva Dirt again. Lots of results and news from Japan to discuss, as well as a closer look at young wrestler Kaho Kobayashi!

Joshi Wrestling News

Best Friends vs. Shirai and IwataniPhoto: yahoo.co.jp

Pro Wrestling WAVE has announced the participants for their upcoming Joshi Wrestling CATCH THE WAVE tournament, and it is one of the largest wrestling tournaments in recent memory. The field has been expanded to 32 wrestlers, with participants from 11 different promotions! The 32 wrestlers will be split into eight blocks, with the top two wrestlers from each block moving on to the single elimination Knockout Round (similar setup as the World Cup). Some of the wrestlers in the tournament include Hikaru Shida, ASUKA, Tsukushi, Aoi Kizuki, DASH Chisako, Sareee, and Yoshiko. The tournament starts on April 10th and continues until June 5th.  (Source)

In some exciting cross-promotional news, it was announced that Io Shirai and Mayu Iwatani from Stardom will be invading Ice Ribbon to battle Tsukasa Fujimoto and Arisa Nakajima! While Shirai and Iwatani are beloved in Stardom, they are not in Ice Ribbon and were greeted accordingly. This will be Shirai’s first match in Ice Ribbon since early 2015, and Mayu Iwatani’s first match in the promotion since back in 2012. (Source)

In more Stardom news, American wrestler Santana Garrett set the record for most successful defenses of the World of Stardom Championship! Garrett won the title from Io Shirai on November 23rd, 2015 and has been actively defending the title since. Only one title defense took place in Stardom, while the other defenses took place in Florida.  There is no set date for her next defense, but she should be returning to Stardom soon.  (Source)

Event Results

We have a lot of catching up to do so let’s get right into it. Stardom’s last event took place on March 12th in Tokyo, Japan. Here are the main results:

The biggest event of the last week was held by Joshi Wrestling promotion Ice Ribbon. Ice Ribbon ran an event at Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan in front of 927 fans. The results from the show are:

Finally in WAVE, the finals of the CATCH THE WAVE Young OH! OH! Tournament took place! As the name implies, it is a tournament for younger wrestlers, with participation from multiple promotions. Here are the results from the show:

Upcoming Shows

Stardom continues to march on as their next show is on March 21st. Here is the card:

Kaho Kobayashi – Wrestler Spotlight:

Joshi Wrestling Kaho Kobayashi
Photo: pro-w-wave.com

Kaho Kobayashi is not well known to American wrestling fans, but she is one of the most exciting and fun Joshi wrestlers currently on the scene. She stands only 4’11” and weighs only 117 pounds but is constant energy and wrestles with more heart than wrestlers twice her size.

Kobayashi is 23 years old and debuted for WNC (TAJIRI’s old promotion) in 2013.  Kobayashi is affiliated with Pro Wrestling WAVE but is also a regular wrestler in many other promotions, including Asuka Project, Osaka Joshi-Pro, Diana, and Oz Academy.  She is also very active, wrestling in approximately 125 matches in 2015 alone. During that stretch she won four different championships. One of her signature moves is the Fisherman Suplex Hold, which she easily preforms regardless of her opponent’s size:

Joshi wrestler Kaho Kobayashi's Fisherman Suplex

Kobayashi’s best attribute is she is relentless, never taking a break or taking it easy in matches. She has taken a lot of big hits but doesn’t stay down, even giving the legend Aja Kong a hard time in a singles match early last year.  Less than three years into her career, Kaho Kobayashi is one to keep an eye on in the future.

Next Week

Next week I will be back with more Joshi Wrestling news and results. If you have any suggestions for the column, let us know! Also if you have any Joshi questions feel free to hit me up on Twitter, I can be found at @purocentral. And finally, I have opened a new store where I sell Joshi-related items that I purchase directly from Japan. So if you are looking for some Joshi memorabilia, check out purocentralshop.com!

Raw Redux (March 14th, 2016): Lana and Team B.A.D. Sow WrestleMania Seeds

0

We’re so close to WrestleMania that we can almost taste it. Sadly for Brie Bella, all she is tasting is defeat! Brie has had a rocky road as of late due to the distracting presence of Lana, who she had to contend with again last night. Brie and Alicia faced Naomi and Tamina in tag team action, whilst Lana had words with Paige later in the night too. What could that tongue lashing lead to? Charlotte and Stephanie McMahon also got on the mic last night. A lot of talk which could lead to a lot of WrestleMania action. Count me in!

First up is Stephanie McMahon:

After being spotted strutting like a total HBIC backstage, we see her in the ring introducing her husband to the world, the WWE Champion Triple H. Hunter then proceeds to do what he and Steph do best – gloat. Unfortunately this week, I felt like Hunter was super boring on the mic. I normally like his promos but he was definitely having an-off night.

Dolph Ziggler interrupts them, with Stephanie taking the lead in roasting The Show Off. Dolph says that he will do anything to entertain the people and he will jump past every obstacle that The Authority put it in his way. While they may want him too, he will never crumble and never, ever quit. Steph grants him a mega opportunity; should he beat Triple H later in the night, he can have any match he wants at WrestleMania, bar a WWE Title match. High stakes. Shame Dolph lost later in the night. As Stephanie would put it, he is a great “B+ player.”

Speaking of being related to a “B+ player,” Brie Bella’s match is next:

Following the entrances of her and Alicia and Naomina, Lana makes her presence felt before the bell can even toll. Brie and Alicia (who is in the ring) are distracted, leading to Naomi yanking on Lic’ weave. After the ref breaks them up and they are far enough apart, he calls for the bell to start the match. Alicia’s roots must have been sore as she isn’t able to start strongly – Naomi decks with with an enziguri. Alicia being Alicia sold it to absolute perfection.

Naomi clubs and stomps at Alicia, Tamina dealing some damage too when the referee’s back is turned. Following a gorgeous delayed dropkick, Naomi tags in Tamina who hits a clothesline. She then roughs Alicia up with a chinlock, leaving Foxy writhing in pain. Tamina then scoops Alicia up, and the latter manages to get out of the predicament, shoving Tamina away.

Brie gets the lukewarm hot tag and quicken the pace, taking Tamina off her feet with a missile dropkick. Brie’s YES! kicks and Brie Mode knee strike follow, the crowd enjoying what they are seeing. Brie then hits a Bella Buster, vaulting from the second rope to take Tamina out. Unluckily for her, Naomi interferes. Luckily for Brie, Alicia evens the odds, absolutely decimating Naomi with a ferocious big boot! Tamina then disposes of Alicia, bringing it back to a level one-on-one playing field. Lana then disrupts that equality once more, distracting the referee whilst Naomina hit an illegal double team move. Tamina pins Brie and Team B.A.D extend their winning streak to two wins, following their Main Event win last week!

After the match, Craylicia confronts Lana on the outside, but Team B.A.D take her out with a double superkick. There was some fancy foot work in that segment without a doubt!

On Raw Fallout, Brie addressed Lana’s interference, vowing to not be fooled by her again:

Shortly following the match, Paige is backstage with JoJo:

JoJo asks Paige about the chaos in the ring not too long ago and before Paige can really say anything, Lana interrupts. The Ravishing Russian says that Paige is far from a success; she can’t keep a championship, or a man. Paige says that it’s rich coming from Lana, who has no friends and hasn’t even had a match. Paige says that if Lana wants to see what a real Diva does, she can show her up close and personally. In comes Team B.A.D, who tell Paige not to make threats. Tamina says that you never know who is listening. An interesting alliance has seemingly formed!

Finally, our Divas Champion Charlotte is backstage with Renee Young:

Charlotte reminisces on her NXT days, saying that it was her holding Sasha Banks‘ hair back when she was being sick with nerves before her NXT debut. Charlotte believes her bravado is all that – a front. She is still the same scared, little girl. As for Becky, Charlotte looks back to when Becky was so desperate to cling onto anyone in NXT who would pay her the time of day.

Renee questions why Charlotte acts like she never cared about either of them, and Ric interrupts. He says that Charlotte rang him two weeks after starting in NXT and said she knew two girls who were going to be great, and that she needed to be better. Charlotte declares that she is better than both, and her title is proof. Renee looks forward to SmackDown, where Charlotte has requested time for a face-to-face-to-face confrontation. Woolotte says that everyone knows the three of them have history, and Bex and Banks won’t be able to run away from their past forever. THE. PLOT. THICKENS.

Thoughts: Can we please get to the bottom of why Lana has beef with Brie? Byron Saxton is repeatedly mentioning how we need to find out, so hopefully we can, and fast.

The seeds have now definitely been planted for WrestleMania, but I hope Summer and Nattie get added that the match. It would be strange for them to be the only Divas not on the card. I imagine they’ll be added into the mix on SmackDown or on next week’s Raw. Summer even said herself in a tweet that she would team with Naomina at Mania, so I hope WWE allows her too. After Nattie’s astounding Roadblock performance, she 100% deserves it as well!

Paige getting mic time was really fun. Her back-and-forth with Lana was great. Nice to see Paige reiterate that whilst on the same side as Brie, she’s definitely not her friend. Also a big major LOL at Tamina appearing on camera before she meant to, crouching down and running when Lana first appeared on camera. Tamina is always doing something funny in the background. Remember when she stole that blackberry behind Gail Kim and Eve Torres? Iconic.

In regards to the tag match tonight, it was a little short but really, really solid. Alicia’s big boot in the match was awesome, as was the tandem super kick to Alicia after the match. Tamina being the one to get the win was a refreshing touch too. Speaking of the finish, it’s nice to see that Team B.A.D have a tag team finisher as well!

Looking to the Divas Title picture, I was fine with them promoting a major altercation on SmackDown. Although three hours, Raw normally feels overcrowded, which is bizarre to say but it’s true. Having the segment planned for SmackDown be rushed on Raw would be a mistake, so I like that some hype is behind Becky and Sasha “facing their pasts”. Charlotte’s mic work has stepped up, as has WWE’s booking of Ric, so the ‘E get a big thumbs up from me. Fingers crossed that SmackDown injects some major intensity into this culminating NXT story, adding that personal element that readers will know I love. Get serious, deep, harsh and throw some soap opera drama at me!

WWE Confirms Jacqueline’s Hall of Fame Induction

[media-credit name=”Photo: WWE.com” align=”aligncenter” width=”620″][/media-credit]

The WWE has made it official: Jacqueline will join the WWE Hall of Fame as part of its Class of 2016.

The news, which was broken last week with the release of the WrestleMania 32 commemorative magazine, has now been officially confirmed by the WWE via FOX Sports.

Jacqueline spoke to FOX Sports about her induction, giving her thoughts on today’s Divas and her wrestling future.

She complimented Naomi and Sasha Banks, comparing Naomi to herself and Jazz:

“I think Naomi and Sasha Banks are pretty tough women. But there’s a lot of talent in WWE right now. Naomi kind of reminds me of me, or Jazz. There’s a lot of talented women. I think that’s because of the trainers.”

She also made it clear that she’s not officially retired from the ring, but is currently keeping herself busy with art projects:

“On the record, I’m not retired. I’m just not active right now. I keep busy. If push comes to shove, I can step in the ring right now. I might be rusty, but you don’t forget. It’s just in you, you don’t forget that… I’m keeping myself busy. I’m painting now, I do art paintings and drawings. That keeps me pretty busy.”

You can read the full interview on FOX Sports and an accompanying article on WWE.com.

The WWE Hall of Fame ceremony takes place Saturday, April 2nd in Dallas, Texas and will air live on the WWE Network.

TNA One Night Only: Joker’s Wild in Review: Fighting Spirits Run Wild

0

Greetings Knockout fans and welcome to another installment of TNA’s One Night Only sequence. This month’s TNA ONO event is Joker’s Wild, one of TNA’s better shows, in my opinion. As with previous years, the concept around Joker’s Wild involves teams being randomly paired together through a random drawing. The winning teams would go on to compete in a final gauntlet match for the chance at a $100,000 dollar grand prize! *Insert TNA financial joke here*

This year, our two competing Knockouts taking part for a shot at the “grand prize” are Jade and Gail Kim. Will this year see a first female winner making it to end and winning it all? Let’s find out.

We head over at ringside, where we find Jeremy Borash having a busy night of drawing names of the TNA roster from a black box. During match number five, he draws the name of Tyrus, who has fun poking fun of the live audience in attendance by seizing a child’s foam finger and taunting fans sitting within the first row.

Borash reaches back to the black box and to pull out the name of the second competitor of this match. He pulls out the name of Jade, who makes her graceful entrance all while Tyrus taps back into his Funkasaurus persona and bops to Jade’s entrance theme song. Just call them Team TnJ!

The names of Team TnJ are drawn and as luck would have it, they would square off with their equals in the form of Gail Kim and Lashley. The bells rings as starting things off are Lashley and Jade? Lashey opposes this arrangement and calls out for Tyrus but Jade insist they go on with the match. She shows Lashley she is just as tough as he is with a few flexing poses. An unimpressed Lashley brushes off Jade but the Dollhouse member begins laying her offense with a series of forearms and sidekicks, all which do nothing to Lashley. He scoops Jade up, gently places her at a turnbuckle and taps her on the head to stay put.

Jade refuses to stay put and flies off the turnbuckle only to be caught midway. Lashley continues to avoid any psychical harm and instead makes a tag to his partner. Gail enters with full force landing a combination of forearms, swift kicks and a flying clothesline. She goes for the pin but only earns a two count.

Jade jabs Gail in the midsection with a knee shot and whips her to the turnbuckle. Jade sprints towards Gail but bumps into an elbow when Gail counters. Gail follows up with a Flying Dragon submission and quickly turns into a roll-up pin attempt but Jade reverses this into a pin of her own. Both women fail to get the three count.

The women then try to outdo each other with a grounded headlock, causing their partners to enter the ring to get a better view of this instead of actually trying to break it up. Then men head back to their respective corners after some backlash from the female partners and the action picks right back up. The two Knockouts go back and forth but hit a stalemate when they each hit a running face crusher. Both teams make a tag and the battle between the heavyweights begin.

After a double clothesline takes out Tyrus and Lashley, the men look for their partners to make the tag. Once the tags are made, Ninja Kim manages to dodge a big boot from Jade and maneuvers to the top of a turnbuckle to hit a crossbody into the pin for a near three count. Gail runs to the ropes but finds herself stumbling to the outside grounds when Tyrus widens the ring ropes. Lashley gets retribution for Gail by knocking off Tyrus from the ring apron.

Jade’s plot to land some offense to Lashley continues but, once again, Lashley overpowers his female counterpart and sets her up to be spanked. Tyrus runs in to make the save before any hands can hit any rear ends. While Tyrus may not have any intentions of butt spanking, he does want to lock lips with Ninja Kim and pulls out a bottle of breath spray for minty freshness! Gail is having none of this and fights off the uncanny Tyrus with an Eat Defeat! While Gail continues to land her attacks on Tyrus, the legal Jade rolls up Gail from behind and gets the three count win for her team.

A proud Jade mocks Gail but gets an Eat Defeat for her smack talk. Gail then turns to Tyrus and agrees to a smooch when in reality it was a set up for Lashley to hit a spear. Despite this post attack from Gail and Lashley, Team TnJ are moving on to the finals!

When we arrive to our final gauntlet showdown, we get an appearance from Maria Kanellis, who introduces her husband Mike Bennett as the first competitor to this match. Mike starts off strong against his first two opponents, X-Division stars Mandrews and Tigre Uno. He manages to eliminate the British Boot Camp winner early on and hold down Tigre until fourth opponent Jade makes her entrance!

Upon entering the ring, Knockout representative Jade dodges a clothesline from Miracle Mike and hits him with a dropkick that sends him to a corner turnbuckle. Tigre targets Jade but she manages to fight him off with a strong right arm and a running tornado DDT! Jade sets her eyes on Mike once again and dashes towards him but Mike lifts Jade over the top rope.

Although Jade is able to land her feet on the ring apron, an interfering Maria hauls Jade’s legs off, eliminating her from the match in less than a minute after even entering! In the end, the Bennetts almost got away with that “100K” prize had it not been for Drew Galloway and his sturdy big boot.

Thoughts: Behind Knockouts Knockdown, Joker’s Wild tends to be my favorite TNA ONO event. It’s an event that allows for TNA to sort of be free in trying new directions with no storyline attachment, more so when it comes to the Knockouts. Sadly, this year didn’t completely deliver that for me.

More often than not, in intergender matches, in TNA and WWE, are treated pretty much treated as a gimmick. While it has been a treat to see Jade/Gail square off again and see that they are on evening playing fields, the small bits of comedy during this mixed tag match sort of took away from it. From Tyrus/Lashley trying to get a close-up of Jade/Gail while they’re competing to the spanks and kissing efforts, it brought down the competitiveness flow of things, for me anyway. It served as reminders as to why we don’t see these kinds of matches play out on television, unlike last year’s Joker’s Wild where there was some grasp of both Awesome Kong and Gail Kim managing to hold their own against male competitors.

Even when Jade made it to the gauntlet, the less than a minute presences felt anti-climatic. I just wish we were able to see more of what Jade can do, as this served could have been a great way to showcase outside the Dollhouse strings. But, as the saying goes: beggars can’t be choosers!
