Sable & Marc Mero vs. Luna Vachon & Goldust (WrestleMania XIV)

0

WrestleMania XIV

March 29th, 1998

At the fourteenth WrestleMania, Sable and Marc Mero teamed up to take on the bizarre duo of Luna Vachon and Goldust.

The match was the result of a bust-up between the former allies, who were once a strange but successful unit. Sable and Mero were hardly on the same page either, Mero’s jealousy getting worse as the weeks went on. Sable won the match for her team, but appropriately, Mero was the one who soaked in the glory, eliciting even more disdain from Sable.

Report: Nikki Bella Unable to Make Full-Time Return to the Ring

[media-credit name=”Photo: WWE.com” align=”aligncenter” width=”620″][/media-credit]

According to a new report, a full-time return to the ring is not in the cards for Nikki Bella.

Pro Wrestling Sheet is reporting that Nikki was scheduled to appear on last night’s Raw in support of Team Total Divas, but cancelled the appearance due to the risk involved. It is said that Nikki’s doctors warned her that one bump could seriously set back her recovery.

The major story of her recovery, though, is that Nikki has been informed that she will not be able to make a full-time return to the ring. The report states that, due to the severity of her injury, the most Nikki can hope for is a part-time return, and she won’t know if that is possible until she undergoes a CAT scan in July.

Future appearances have been nixed as well, ruling out the possibility that Nikki could be present at WrestleMania or next week’s Raw. Nikki, the report says, is “very sad” that she won’t be able to support her sister Brie at ringside during what may be her final nights as a Diva.

Sable Makes Her WWE Debut (WrestleMania XII)

WrestleMania XII

March 31st, 1996

The twelfth WrestleMania saw the debut of the legendary Sable, who accompanied Triple H to the ring for his match against Ultimate Warrior.

Triple H, then known as Hunter Hearst Helmsley and much more “refined” than he came to be, would lose the match quickly. He was apparently unimpressed with Sable’s managerial skills, as he soon began to mistreat her. This brought along Marc Mero, who claimed Sable for his own manager.

Raw Redux (March 28th, 2016): Eva Evens the Odds and Charlotte Gains the Edge

0

We are just 5 days away from WrestleMania and Raw delivered big time last night. Congrats if you got the WrestleMania 22 reference there.

Last night’s Raw featured two Divas matches, the first of which was Charlotte vs Becky Lynch. Ric Flair and Sasha Banks were also at ringside, ensuring shenanigans from the outside were a certainty.

In addition to a handful of backseat appearances from Stephanie McMahon, Paige squared off with her NXT rival Emma. Their respective teammates for WrestleMania – Alicia Fox, Brie Bella and Natalya for Paige, and Lana, Naomi, Summer Rae and Tamina for Emma – flanked behind, ensuring shenanigans from the outside were a certainty. Again. I have a feeling you’re going to like this week’s Raw guys!

Up first tonight, it’s our first Divas match, pitting former besties turned bitter enemies Charlotte and Becky Lynch against one another.

Becky makes the best of the early going with some neat, deep armdrags. Charlote fights back not too long later, reversing an Irish whip cleaner than a whistle by vaulting over the top rope. She then grabs Becky by the hair, sending her crashing to the mat. She’s not the Dirtiest Lady in The Game for nothing!

Back from the commercial break and Charlotte is rallying knee after knee into Becky’s face. Becky hits back with some tough clotheslines, the adrenaline learly fueling Becky at this point. The crowd are loving it as Becky decks Charlotte with a jumping calf kick, sending more pain her way with a running forearm shortly afterward. The crowd are up in arms when Charlotte kicks out of a Bexplex, with the champ showing more of her resolve next. She hits a schoolgirl for two before kneeing Becky twice in the face, bashes she follows up with a stiff knife-edge chop.

Bex rebounds with a springboard kick, sending Charlotte to the outside and into the path of Sasha! Sadly, physicality is only teased, as Charlotte cowardly runs away from the situation. The Divas Champ gets back into the ring whilst Ric interferes, grabbing Becky’s leg. Becky kicks Ric off, bur runs right into a ferocious big boot. A Natural Selection later and Becky is pinned. The crafty champ makes up for her loss on SmackDown with a devious win!

Becky reacted to the loss on Raw Fallout:

Stephanie McMahon is up next, supporting her husband, the WWE Champion, Triple H:

Steph rightfully let Hunter lead this one, explaining that Roman Reigns has helped him reignite his passion for becoming a champion and holding onto that very title. Stephanie says that Sunday night isn’t about unicorn horns or street fights, it is about the prestige of the WWE Title, a belt that he will keep around his waist. Roman Reigns interrupts Stephanie (like we haven’t seen that before!) and then things get physical. While Steph didn’t get her hands dirty last night, here’s hoping she dishes a slap or two out at Mania. Hopefully during Triple H and Shane’s matches!

We next turn our attention to the Divas match on the WrestleMania pre-show, the 10 Diva tag… which at the point of chronological recap, only had nine women confirmed. Oh how that quickly changed with a wave of negativity. More on that later though.

Paige is squaring off against Emma, the latter representing the newly named B.A.D. & Blonde. Love it. I love those names that will only last for a hot minute. Remember Submission Sorority? Also, I loved both of those entrances. Seeing Emma doing her poses on the main roster to quite a good reaction was awesome.

Emma clubs at Paige to start off the match, taking her down with a snapmare soon after. Following a kick to the back, Emma pulls at Paige’s hair on the mat, and then between the ropes, ripping out those roots. That’s got to hurt. Thank god I don’t know what that feels like! Emma then hits that lightning quick basement dropkick of hers to net a two count. The Australian then stomps at Paige in the corner, choking her out with her foot for good measure. Nattie gets the crowd going as Emma collapses Paige’s lungs with the move formerly known as the Emmamite Sandwich – perhaps that should get a new name?!

Out of nowhere, Paige rebounds with a trio of thrust kicks before yelling her trademark catchphrase. The two-time Divas Champion then hits successive running knee strikes, keeping the Diva in blue down for two. Emma fights back with fists, but then gets flopped and flattened with a fall away slam. Lana and Tamina re seen whispering on the outside, and it seems they have a plan in the works. Tamina gets Paige’s attention on the apron, and then all of the Divas on the outside start arguing, Back in the ring, Emma hits a jawbreaker on Paige just before Lana darts into the ring. She decks Paige with her signature kick, allowing Emma to pick up the win.

After the match, Emma continues to assault Paige, with Brie coming in to tackle Lana. Summer then dashes to grab Brie as Tamina and Nattie clash and Alicia has her hands full with Naomi. Just as Lana looks super pleased with herself that her problems are solved – and she’s barely had to lift a finger – none other than EVA MARIE enters the arena! This reaction video posted by Diva Dirt’s Josue from the arena tells the story.

LOL. Eva poses on the ramp before sprinting to the ring! I was so scared Eva was going to trip or tear her quads, but she did neither, taking Lana out by yanking at her hair. A basic move, but well, if you were secretly in cahoots with someone, you wouldn’t want to hurt them too hard, right? Team Total Divas look shocked and disgusted as Lana raises her new teammates’ hands. Oh dear. Talk about strange bedfellows!

On Raw Fallout, Brie made it clear that she doesn’t trust her newest teammate:

Finally, the Authority are in the ring… again, to have a confrontation with Roman Reigns… again:

Not to mention, Triple H attacked Roman backstage in between the two in-ring segments. Talk about overload! Although we saw a lot of Roman and Hunter, this last segment showed more of Steph’s wicked tongue, and Roman delivered quite the impressive dive onto much of the roster who tried to break him and Triple H apart.

Thoughts: Once again, the Divas received some fantastic treatment on the road to this year’s WrestleMania. Whilst the storylines haven’t been as fleshed out or as deep as I would have liked, we’ve seen competent action and at least stories are in fact being told. You couldn’t say that for some Manias gone by.

The triple threat is being treated as one of WrestleMania’s main events, and rightly so. I thought it was interesting to see Becky lose last night. Sasha got to have a win over Charlotte but not Becky? Whilst WWE are having us think Sasha or Charlotte are the strongest candidates going in to the Grandest Stage of Them All, I 100% don’t say either of them winning. Becky’s underdog story is going to culminate at Mania, with her capturing the Divas Championship. She can make Charlotte submit, allowing Sasha to keep her undefeated streak. One thing is for sure in my opinion, Sunday will be Becky’s night.

Although if Sasha does indeed win, I wouldn’t be mad at that at all!

As for Charlotte and Becky’s match, it was on the shorter side but it felt much longer than it was. It was one of those matches where the commercial break didn’t damage it at all. I liked the unique way of Becky springboard kicking Charlotte to the outside, which we haven’t seen before. Becky actually getting physical with Ric was interesting too, as that shows the lengths Becky is willing to go to to try and win. Instead of shoving him off like last night, maybe she’ll take his arm at Mania?

I also liked how the Bexplex is becoming an established name too. Well done Mauro Ranello! Michael Cole did well to actually listen to his more talented colleague and pick up on that new name. He actually called it a Beckplex twice but at least he realized his mistake before the match was over.

Looking to the 10-Diva tag, my god did Eva get a reaction. It may not have been the one WWE wanted, but any reaction is a good reaction right? People actually care about this match thanks to the interesting build and inclusion of dark horses like Emma, Lana and now Eva. This could have had clusterf**k written all over it but it is far from it. Great work from WWE. It is just a shame that whilst Summer’s inclusion was developed and explained, Lana’s beef with Brie wasn’t. You can’t have it all though.

Will Eva turn on her team to allow Lana to pick up the win? It looks that way to me! Her team are uneasy with her siding with them, and it would be absolutely ridiculous for WWE to ignore Eva on NXT. Eva will want all of the attention for herself, and what better way to steal the spotlight than a WrestleMania back stabbing? All eyes will be on Eva at the Show of Shows.

I was a big fan of WWE giving Emma the win and a chance to reestablish herself, especially considering she returned on Main Event, which isn’t even on the WWE Network. It was a smart move to revisit Emma and Paige’s NXT rivalry. CONTINUE

What an exciting weekend ahead. We have a blockbuster bout between Asuka and Bayley on Saturday, and two mega matches at Mania. Thank the lord that WWE is now serious about women’s wrestling!

[media-credit name=”Photo: WrestlingKnockouts.com” align=”aligncenter” width=”620″][/media-credit]

Velvet Sky may be the next Knockout to part ways with TNA.

PWInsider is reporting that Velvet’s contract is set to expire in “three to four” weeks, and it is unknown if she plans on resigning.

Velvet’s Beautiful People teammate Angelina Love recently revealed that she parted ways with TNA after her contract expired during her pregnancy leave. So far, Velvet has given no indication of her own plans on Twitter.

Velvet first debuted in TNA in 2007 and has taken two short stints away from the company – first in 2012 and then in 2015 – both instances arising from unsuccessful contract negotiations. She is a two-time Knockouts Champion and is, according to PWInsider, TNA’s second best merchandise seller behind Jeff Hardy.

Miss Elizabeth Reunites With Randy Savage (WrestleMania VII)

WrestleMania VII

March 24th, 1991

At the seventh WrestleMania, two years Miss Elizabeth after their split, Miss Elizabeth finally reunited with Randy Savage in the aftermath of his heavy defeat.

Having lost his match to Ultimate Warrior, Savage was forced to retire from wrestling. Post-match, Sensational Sherri tried to add to his humiliation, attacking him in the ring. This brought forth Elizabeth, who chased Sherri off, leaving her in the ring with Savage. The emotional reunion that followed was one for the history books.

WrestleMania VI

April 1st, 1990

At the sixth WrestleMania, one year after dismissing Miss Elizabeth from his side, Randy Savage teamed with her replacement, Sensational Sherri, to take on the dynamic duo of Sapphire and Dusty Rhodes.

This was Sapphire’s first televised WWE match, having so far only been Rhodes’s manager. She had incredible luck for a rookie, though, winning the match for her team with help from the aforementioned Elizabeth, who had plenty of unfinished business with Savage and Sherri.

Miss Elizabeth is Caught Between the Mega Powers (WrestleMania V)

WrestleMania V

April 2nd, 1989

The main event of the fifth WrestleMania pitted former Mega Powers Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage against one another, Savage putting the WWE Championship on the line. The pair’s breakup placed Miss Elizabeth firmly in the middle of the two, Savage’s jealousy and belief that Hogan was “lusting after” Elizabeth putting her in a very uncomfortable situation.

When the time came for the match, Elizabeth stood at ringside in a neutral corner. Savage gave her plenty of grief, even hiding behind her at one point to save himself from Hogan’s attacks. Still, Elizabeth showed some loyalty to Savage, once preventing Hogan from ramming him head-first into the ring post. It only served to distract Savage even more, prompting the referee to banish Elizabeth from ringside for the remainder of the match. Savage would lose the match and the championship, promptly dropping Elizabeth as his manager and replacing her with Sensational Sherri.

April 7th, 1986

At the second WrestleMania, Fabulous Moolah defended the Women’s Championship she infamously won from Wendi Richter. Former Women’s Tag Team Champion Velvet McIntyre was her challenger

The match was notably short, lasting just a minute. Moolah would claim victory in shady fashion, pinning Velvet off of a missed splash, the referee unaware that Velvet had her foot on the bottom rope. Her rope break going unnoticed, Velvet lost the match, allowing Moolah to extend her reign as Women’s Champion.

At the very first WrestleMania, Leilani Kai defended her Women’s Championship against Wendi Richter. Both women had a legendary backup in their corners: Wendi brought along pop star Cyndi Lauper, while Leilani recruited the incomparable Fabulous Moolah.

It didn’t take long for the villainous Moolah to interfere, but she was quickly neutralized by Lauper. This allowed Wendi to get the win unencumbered, reversing a pin off of Leilani’s crossbody to get the three count. With the win, Wendi started her second and final reign as WWE Women’s Champion.

WWE Main Event Redux (March 25th, 2016): Team Lana Grows by Two

0

Welcome to another Main Event Redux! This week, the storyline development was kicked into high gear, so much so that it penetrated the sacred spoiler wall.

As you’ll recall from earlier this week, after a challenge was made for an Eight-Diva Tag Team match at WrestleMania, Team Lana grew by two during Tuesday night’s tapings, adding Emma and Summer Rae to their ranks. So, we already know the twist, but how did we get here? There’s where this Redux comes in.

The setting for this surprising turn of events was a singles match pitting Naomi against Paige. Let’s check it out:

Paige comes to the ring accompanied by two of her WrestleMania teammates, Alicia Fox and Natalya. Brie Bella, unfortunately, is MIA. Naomi comes to ringside with Lana and Tamina, so the odds are even… for now.

Lana takes up her usual seat atop the announce table as the referee signals for the bell. Paige and Naomi tie up, Naomi taking control with a series of kicks. An enziguri takes Paige to the mat, allowing Naomi to run the ropes and hit her with a split leg drop. Naomi covers Paige for the pin, but Paige kicks out.

Naomi toys with Paige, following her to a corner where she chokes her with her boot. Paige starts to fight back, kicking Naomi until a right hand stuns her. Naomi hits the ropes and leaps at Paige, but is caught and tossed with a fallaway slam. Paige cover for the pin, but it’s not enough.

Naomi reverses Paige’s whip into the corner, but is vaulted onto the ring apron when she charges in. She hits Paige with a right hand and climbs to the top rope, but Paige springs toward her, hitting her up high with a knee. Paige boasts a bit before climbing back up the ropes and grabbing Naomi by the head, dropping her throat-first onto the top rope.

As Paige goes to pull Naomi towards the middle of the ring, Emma’s music hits! Paige is surprised to see Emma and Summer Rae stroll out onto the stage, but Lana certainly isn’t. Emma and Summer run down to ringside, attacking Natalya and Alicia and successfully taking them out. Meanwhile, in the ring, Paige is decked with a kick to the head by Naomi, who has taken up position on the ring apron. Naomi hits a sunset flip over the ropes and into the ring, but instead of pinning Paige, she locks in the Slay-o-mission. Paige taps out!

Naomi beats on Paige a bit more to punctuate the victory before she’s joined in the ring by her allies. Summer, Naomi, Lana, Tamina and Emma stand tall together as Paige, Alicia and Natalya exit, wondering what the hell just happened.

Of course, earlier this week, we learned “what the hell happened” was that Lana recruited Emma. Summer recruited herself, but was successfully added to the team afterwards:

That means we have a 5-on-4 situation here. Who can the Total Divas crew add to their team? Someone from Total Divas, perhaps?

Thoughts: This was a great angle – one that I wish could have played out on Raw. I’m happy to see it happen at all, though, and I like that the WWE felt it was important enough to break the spoiler barrier and acknowledge it on Tuesday. If only Main Event was still airing live on Tuesdays! The match was short and unmemorable, but it really was only there to give Emma and Summer an excuse to come out, so it served its purpose well. And hell, I’ll take any excuse to see Naomi bust out the Slay-o-mission.

The addition of Emma is definitely unexpected, since she’s a NXT regular now. It makes sense on a narrative level, though, since Emma’s whole attitude is down to the chip she has on her shoulder. She would absolutely be susceptible to Lana’s message and would totally leap at the chance to get her WrestleMania moment. I can’t think of a Diva who’s more deserving of such an opportunity – Emma’s absolutely reinvented herself in NXT, and it’s high time she’s gotten the chance to show the main roster the “new Emma.”

I love the fact that Summer’s involvement wasn’t as simple as, “She’s a heel, and the heels needed teammates, so she joined their side,” when it could very easily have been set up that way. Summer and Lana has a lot of history, and it would have done them both a disservice to ignore it completely. I buy that Lana would be reluctant to align herself with Summer, so seeing Summer having to convince Lana that they need each other was amazing. That bit of continuity may seem small, but in the Divas division, it means so much.

So, with Team Lana now consisting of five Divas, it looks like Team Total Divas needs to recruit another Diva. It seems obvious that that woman would be their castmate Eva Marie. I have no real issue with it – it would likely be a one-off and wouldn’t affect her NXT goings-on – but I hope they don’t erase her character completely in siding her with the good guys. Eva works so much better as a heel, and trying to pass her off as a face would only hurt the team. The crowd will want to boo her, so they need to lean into it, much like NXT has. Have her be the reluctant teammate that unabashedly craves the WrestleMania spotlight and is more concerned with basking in it than helping her team win. If the Total Divas team is to win at Mania, have it be by overcoming the odds – an unhelpful teammate and the numbers disadvantage that comes with it – and you’ve got yourself a WrestleMania-worthy happy ending. Sounds good to me!

‘Total Divas’ First Look: Brie and Nikki Bella Pitch Their Idea for a Lingerie Line

On this Tuesday’s episode of Total Divas, Brie and Nikki Bella pitch their big idea for a lingerie line that “pays it forward.”

The duo meet with an entrepreneur to pitch their line, which would donate a pair of underwear to women in need with every purchase. While the idea doesn’t fall flat, it may need some tweaking before it’s given the green light.

Watch the clip below:

Total Divas airs Tuesdays at 9pm ET/PT on E!.

Synopsis for episode 11, “Clothes Quarters”: “Brie’s stubbornness creates a roadblock for the Bellas’ new lingerie line; Mandy tries to play the role of peacemaker when she and her parents go on a joint family vacation with the Neidharts; and Nattie attempts to put a stop to her dad’s embarrassing antics.”

Report: Brie Bella Retiring After WrestleMania?

0

[media-credit name=”Photo: WWE.com” align=”aligncenter” width=”620″][/media-credit]

Brie Bella‘s retirement may be imminent.

Pro Wrestling Sheet is reporting that the former Divas Champion will officially retire after this year’s post-WrestleMania Raw.

The report notes that Brie’s decision to retire earlier than expected is connected to her husband Daniel Bryan‘s health issues, which recently forced him to pull out of scheduled WWE appearances. She is expected to take on an ambassador role for the WWE, continuing to appear on Total Divas and WWE Network programming but no longer competing in the ring.

Brie acknowledged that her time as a wrestler was coming to an end in an interview with Good Morning America last month. At that time, she estimated that she would retire in the summer, but this new report indicates that the timetable for her departure has been moved up.

Brie is scheduled to compete in a 10-Diva Tag Team match at WrestleMania 32 on April 3rd. If this report is correct, her retirement would begin after Raw the following night.

SmackDown Redux (March 24th, 2016): Reaching the Boiling Point

Hello readers! We are less than two weeks away from WrestleMania, and for the first time in a decade we will have two Divas matches (and BONUS for the second not having a pillow fight). This is such an exciting time as on this week’s SmackDown has Boston’s hometown hero Sasha Banks taking on the Divas Champion Charlotte, with Becky Lynch on commentary. Something tells me things are going to get a little heated, so let’s get to the action!

The Divas actually open SmackDown as Charlotte with her Hall of Fame pappy, Ric Flair has the microphone. She starts her diatribe stating that we are little over a week away from WrestleMania, and that means we’re one week away from Ms. Flair ending the “so called Divas Revolution”. And as a result, Charlotte will begin the WOO Revolution, which entails putting  an end to Becky Lynch and “Boston’s so called hometown hero”, Sasha Banks. She closes saying that at the record breaking crowd at Dallas, the only thing the WWE Universe will be saying is “WOO!”

Out comes Sasha Banks to a great reaction and this match is underway!

Charlotte immediately powders out of the ring as the bell rings and taunts The Boss. Sasha gets pissed and goes after Charlotte. Charlotte catches her with a right hand. She brings her in the ring but Sasha takes her down and starts a ground and pound attack. Sasha makes matters worst nailing a series of Charlotte’s signature chops to the chest. Sasha follow things up with a dropkick. She only gains a one count. Charlotte gains some more control kneeing Sasha’s mid-section. Sasha connects with a back elbow.

Ric distracts Sasha from the outside with some Woos and gives the opening for Charlotte to drive Sasha to the mat with a big boot. Charlotte drives Sasha head to the mat a few times and talks some trash before giving a neckbreaker to Sasha. Charlotte applies a nerve hold to Sasha, who starts  powering out with some right hands to the midsection of Charlotte. Sasha rolls Charlotte up with a school boy and only gets the two count. Sasha with a backslide for another two count.

Charlotte exploder suplexes Sasha sending her to the corner . Sasha tries to rally back with a combo of a back elbow and a boot to the face. Charlotte retaliates drops Sasha with a knife edge chop. Charlotte tries to go for it again but Sasha answers back with a series of right forearms to Charlotte. Sasha knees the face and adds the momentum with a running jumping double knee to Charlotte. She lands and grabs her leg for a nearfall.

The Divas Champion tries to find refuge in the corner, but it doesn’t last long when Sasha hits a running knee attack. Sasha then places Charlotte in the ropes and attempts for the double knee stomp, but Charlotte smartly rolls to the outside. As she tries to get a breather on the outside, Sasha hits a baseball slide dropkick, sending Charlotte into Becky Lynch.

Charlotte throws Sasha into Becky, and cowers away to the ring. Sasha and the Lasskicker have a war of words before she shoves Becky. That distraction allows Charlotte to spinebuster Sasha once she gets in the ring. Charlotte then goes for the Figure Eight, but Sasha rolls her up with an inside cradle for the victory. After the match, Becky gets back in the ring and gives Exploder Suplexes to both Charlotte and Sasha and leaves the ring. Sasha then attacks Charlotte with the Bank Statement.

Thoughts: Another week, another solid SmackDown. First off, I LOVED that fact that Divas opened the show. It was different and actually gave the rest of the show a strong start. I got flashbacks to 2002, when the Divas opened every week. (It makes our jobs easier for these Reduxes! :) ) Having that slot is a sign of respect because you set the tone of the entire show, and the women here delivered. Now to get that on RAW…

I thought Charlotte’s promo was very short and sweet. I like her character’s continued evolution. She’s gone from being spoiled, entitled, and cowardly to now believing she’s on a crusade for her own revolution. Charlotte’s come a long way in regards to her mic work. She’s gotten really comfortable and elicits the desired reactions more frequently.

The match was fun and at times gave me shades of their epic NXT battles. I don’t have a ton of notes regarding the match, it was fun and exciting. I liked the spinebuster and Sasha adding that Evan Bourne-esque double knees was fresh. Sasha gaining a pinfall victory was good to see and Charlotte’s reaction was priceless. The undefeated streak continues! And having a win of the champion cements the reason behind her contendership. I really liked that Becky has had enough of people toying with her. Having her suplex both Sasha and Charlotte and leaving was perfect. I love that Becky got to have a moment of dominance in this feud. It gives her that extra boost as a contender.

With that being said, I like that this feud regarding the three-way title match has had buildup and story, but it has not gotten intense yet. I kind of want there to be a Lita/Trish backstage segment from the SmackDown before WrestleMania X8 with Becky and Sasha. I want the hatred to be there. It seems too lax. I think the promo last week was such a great start and things seemed to be going great, but it has kind of fizzled. In this last week or so, I hope things get amped up on this road to WrestleMania and get some more story. In the end, there were more positives than negatives this week. I know these three women are going to blow the roof out of the place in Dallas, but I would like to see this feud get a lot more physical and more personal.

What did you think? Does Sasha have Charlotte’s number? Is Becky going to suplex everyone until Dallas? Or will Charlotte’s Woo Revolution take off? Let me know in the comments and as always, thanks for reading.

Impact Write-Up (March 22nd, 2016): Doll Friends No More

0

Hola Knockout fans and welcome to this week’s day late Impact Write-Up. After scoring a huge over the Knockouts Champion last week, Maria Kanellis has, somehow, become the unofficial number one contender to Gail Kim‘s title. While most women would be thrilled to have this kind of opportunity, Maria has other motives in mind and plans to roll out her grand scheme with the help of The Dollhouse.

Newly crowned TNA World Heavyweight champion Drew Galloway opens this week’s show, but his celebratory speech is cut short when a number of fellow TNA stars all interrupt Drew to challenge him for his world title. This causes our darling TNA President Dixie Carter to come out and restore some order by announcing that the new number one contender would be determine in a gauntlet match:

Not for nothing Dixie, but isn’t Matt Hardy technically due a rematch clause?

We get a second dose of Dixie when she meets Lashley backstage, who demands to he be inserted to the gauntlet match Dixie has booked:

So, has the pairing of Raquel and Lashley been quietly dropped?

Before we head out to our scheduled title match of the evening, Maria has a message for the reigning Knockouts Champion:

Maria celebrates her victory over Gail from last week’s match, using the win as a point to prove that she is indeed a woman of action.

Maria continues by stating that Gail has been the face for the Knockouts division for so long now, that her holding the Knockouts Championship means nothing now. Being this new woman of action, Maria hints that she will take action again this week, by doing something that will change up the Knockouts division forever.

We head to our Knockouts match of the evening, where Gail Kim is all set to defend her title against the woman who she so badly wants to get her hands on!

Maria makes her entrance to the six-sided ring but calls for a mic before any punches can be thrown.

Maria claims to have a love for professional wrestling, hence why she refers herself as the First Lady of the sport. Though Maria is confident she can pin Gail for a second week in a row, she asked herself, what would that really accomplish? Nothing!

With that in mind, Maria went over to TNA management with a request to help shake up the Knockouts division. Before revealing what this mysterious proposition is, Maria invites the Dollhouse to join her in the ring. The lights in the Impact Zone dim as Rebel, Marti Bell and Jade make their routine entrance for their encounter with the First Lady of Professional Wrestling.

Once Maria comes face to face with The Dollhouse, she compliments them on being beautiful and strong women, despite the group having a rotating door in leaders. Unlike their former head mistresses, Maria wants these Dolls to leave behind their childish ways in order to become unique and individual women.

Maria reveals that during her meeting with TNA management, her request to transfer her Knockouts title shot to just one member of The Dollhouse was granted. Not only that but Maria also sweetens the deal by promising that the winner of this “Death of The Dollhouse” match will also be under her leadership and on their way to become future stars.

With no title match happening, Gail opts to leave the arena while Maria calls for the bell to ring and makes herself comfortable by joining Josh Matthews and The Pope over at the commentary table. Anyone remember the last time we heard a female voice over at said table?

After a short break, our Triple Threat match is underway and starts off with a few bickering among the Dolls. Meanwhile, a listen over at the commentary table has Maria explaining that her reasoning in creating this Triple Threat match was to help breed some competition within the Knockouts division. Can’t argue that statement.

Turning back to the match at hand, Rebel is the first to make a move against both Jade and Marti but the original Dolls stick together to counter Rebel’s incoming offense. They kick Rebel down to mat and transfer her to turnbuckle where Jade lands a double knee shot. Both Jade and Marti go for a cover on Rebel and suddenly friction begins to arise between the one time DFF’s.

Rebel tries fighting back against Jade and Marti but once again, finds herself outnumbered. Both Jade and Marti apply a single leg Boston Crab hold to Rebel but then argue as to hold who should let go of their hold first. “Back off Jade!” yells Marti but the small exchange of words serves as window for Rebel to hit a double clothesline to Jade and Marti. She follows up by climbing to the top rope of a turnbukle and lands a cross body that takes down her two competitors. Pin cover only earns a two count.

Still maintaining some control of the match, Rebel scoops up Marti to apply a back breaker and fends off Jade with a high roundhouse kick. Rebel then goes for a split leg drop onto Marti but misses when Marti rolls right under Rebel. Marti turns the table and whips Rebel to a corner, looking to connect a running big boot. Though Rebel manages to dodge Marti’s boot, as it would play out in a Triple Threat contest, she ends up getting hit in the face anyway by a charging Jade from a different corner.

Cameras turn back to the commentary table as Josh Matthews asks Maria to elaborate what kind of leader she’ll be to Knockouts division. Maria states that she wants to take the division to a mainstream level and The Pope is quick to remind Matthews that Maria is a former Playboy center fold. How much more mainstream can you get?

After a gut wrench suplex fails to get the three count onto Rebel, Jade decides to go high flying by climbing the top rope of a turnbuckle. Jade doesn’t get far, as Rebel quickly climbs the turnbuckle to fight her off. This causes Marti to get in on the action, sneaking under her fellow Knockouts for the classic Tower of Doom spot found in Triple Threat matches. All three Dolls are done, much to the enlightenment of Maria, who takes full credit in bringing out this competitive side from these three Knockouts.

Once the Knockouts get back on their feet, Marti is the first to land a strike, hitting Jade with a spinning clothesline that was intended for Rebel. This infuriates Jade, who goes on a rampage by hitting a spinning kick to Rebel when she tries to roll up Marti from behind. Jade follows with a dropkick to each of her opponents and completely puts them away with a mat slam stacked onto with another. Jade goes for a double pin and scores a three count, earning a future Knockouts title shot in the process and the label of being Maria’s “protégée”.

Thoughts: Can’t say I was a fan of this Triple Threat match. It felt as though things were going at a slower than usual pace and that cues on spots were being missed. Not exactly what I was expecting for the eventual Dollhouse breakup match. Still, the match did what it was suppose to do: break up group with Jade coming out on top.

While I’ve grown to love the Dollhouse stable when the group was first formed under Taryn Terrell‘s wing, the group lost a lot of steam over the course of a handful of losses. The band-aid leadership under Awesome Kong‘s began to refresh the group (and show a real fun side of Kong) but it never fully flourished beyond an already stale feud with The Beautiful People. This split was much needed, more so if TNA are planning to polish Jade as the breakout star.

Maria’s continues to shine with her Heel promos and her ongoing message against Gail Kim. It was also such a nice relief to hear another voice on the commentary table beyond the usual Pope/Matthews duo.

Although I do question how scoring a pin fall in a mixed tag team match leads to a number contendership for a title shot, I can understand how it is being used as another tactic for Maria to continue to taunt Gail and stir things up among the other Knockouts. TNA seem pretty set on keeping this feud between Maria and Gail alive so here’s hoping that things can stay interesting and fresh enough until their eventual one-on-one match down the line.

NXT Redux (March 23rd, 2016): Emma Tries to Show Up the Number One Contender

0

NXT TakeOver: Dallas is just over a week away, so it’s time to ramp up the action in anticipation of our big title match, in which Bayley will defend the NXT Women’s Title against the undefeated Asuka. On this week’s show, Asuka will square off with her TakeOver: London opponent Emma in an effort to prove why she was named number one contender. Of course, a little momentum never hurt, either.

That match was our main event, but it wasn’t the only Divas action on the show. Preceding it was a bout between Alexa Bliss and Sarah Dobson, the woman better known as Crazy Mary Dobson:

Alexa is accompanied by Blake and Murphy, while poor Sarah is all by her lonesome. The bell sounds, and Sarah displays her eagerness by performing a quick forward roll. The women circle and tie up, Sarah taking Alexa down with an arm drag.

Alexa regroups and charges at Sarah, but her attack is ducked, and she’s taken down with a dropkick. Alexa backs into the corner, drawing Sarah towards her. She dodges Sarah, sending her into the turnbuckle. Alexa takes Sarah to the mat and lands a few right hands to her head. She goes for the cover, but Sarah kicks out.

Alexa gets cocky, standing on Sarah’s back for a few moments before slapping her across the face. She mocks Sarah and immediately pays for it, as she’s pulled into a small package pin. Alexa kicks out and springs back into action, nailing Sarah with a knee to the stomach and then locking in a submission, punishing Sarah’s left shoulder. Sarah gets to her feet, but Alexa sends her back to a seated position. Alexa soon releases the hold, but continues to wear down Sarah.

Sarah crawls to the ropes, where Alexa chokes her. Alexa sends Sarah into the corner and charges at her, nailing Sarah’s midsection with her shoulder repeatedly. When Alexa whips Sarah into a neighboring corner, Sarah manages to use her momentum to her advantage, flipping out onto the ring apron. She fends off Alexa and kicks her in the head before scaling the turnbuckle. She flies off the top rope to hit Alexa with a crossbody, her knees nailing Alexa in the face. She goes for the pin, but Alexa kicks out.

When Sarah pulls Alexa to her feet, the Diva decks her with a forearm. Alexa tries to continue her attack, but a drop toe hold sends her into the ropes. Sarah runs the ropes and goes for a handspring attack, but Blake and Murphy interfere, Blake distracting the referee while Murphy pulls Alexa out of the way. Alexa slams Sarah to the mat and hits a double knee drop before climbing to the top rope. She hits the Sparkle Splash, getting the pin and the win.

Prior to Emma’s match with Asuka, she and Dana Brooke spoke to Alex Reyes backstage:

Alex asks Emma what will set this match apart from her loss to Asuka at TakeOver: London. She says a lot is different about this match: she’s been training and has put her head together with Dana for strategy. Dana says she’s helped Emma with her preparation, putting to use her fitness expertise.

Dana recalls the match that put her on the injured list, blaming Asuka for where she is now. She says, if it were up to her, she’d be out there squashing Asuka, but Emma’s going to do the job instead.

Emma says she’s been waiting for a chance to prove herself. She says she should be the one having a title shot against Bayley. Emma vows that the “Empress of Tomorrow” won’t make it past today.

Later on, it’s time for Asuka to prove why she’s challenging for the belt at TakeOver:

Off the bell, they tie up, Asuka winning control by backing Emma into a corner. It’s short lived, though, as Emma quickly turns the tables and forces Asuka into the defensive position. The referee forces a break, and Asuka spins out with a kick, which Emma narrowly avoids. The Divas circle again, Emma ducking the tie-up to lock in a side headlock. Emma takes Asuka to the mat, but Asuka is quick to get back to her feet. She shoves Emma off into the ropes, but is taken down with a shoulder block from Emma.

Emma hits the ropes, but Asuka trips her up. She locks in a side headlock of her own. Emma fights her off, but finds herself leveled by a shoulder block too. Asuka runs the ropes, avoids a trip-up from Emma and ducks an attack, capping it all off with a mocking dance move. Emma charges at Asuka, only to be taken down with a jumping armbar. Emma frantically rolls to the ropes, where she forces a break.

Emma tries to regroup on the ring apron, but Asuka has other ideas, running the ropes and sending her crashing to the outside with a flying hip attack. As Dana tries to help Emma gain her bearings, we head to a commercial break.

When we return, Emma’s back in the ring and is in the process of fending off Asuka. She attempts a suplex, but Asuka grabs hold of her arm, going for another armbar. Emma struggles, and Asuka opts for a hammerlock. Emma twice tries to free herself with a tumble forward, but Asuka hangs on tight. She finally gets to the ropes and forces Asuka to let go. Asuka immediately tries to seize Emma’s arm again, but Emma thwarts her. Asuka then opts to take her down by the legs, locking in a kneebar. She transitions it into an ankle lock, which Emma frantically tries to free herself from. She hops up onto one leg and heads for the ropes, where she flips forward, sending Asuka to the outside.

Asuka quickly makes it back to the ring apron, but Emma attacks, knocking her off her feet. Emma beats on Asuka and takes her into the corner, where she lands some stomps to the midsection. She then snapmares Asuka into the center of the ring and kicks her square in the back before standing on her hair, yanking the rest of her body up by her hands. She releases the hold quickly and goes for the pin, but Asuka kicks out.

Emma once more grabs Asuka’s hands, planting boots on either shoulder and tugging. She earns a one-count by pinning Asuka’s shoulders to the mat for a moment, but Asuka kicks out, fighting the hold on her side. Emma returns her shoulders to the mat, but Asuka again lifts a shoulder up. Emma switches the hold into a headlock, fighting Asuka to the mat. Asuka eventually gets to her feet, but Emma manages to take her down once more, maintaining the hold.

Asuka again gets to her feet, using her hips to earn her freedom. Emma lets go of the hold, but nails Asuka with a right hand to the back, sending her to her knees. Emma runs the ropes, only to be met with a flurry of kicks from Asuka. Emma ducks one and pulls Asuka into a roll-up pin attempt, but Asuka kicks out, springing to her feet for another attack. Emma ducks it and slams Asuka to the mat by her hair. She goes for the pin, but it’s not enough.

Emma stretches Asuka’s arms back into a submission hold, taking her to the mat and driving knees into her back before switching to a back submission, arching Asuka back with two fistfuls of hair. Emma lets go of the hold and fends off Asuka’s attempt to rally, sending her into the corner. Emma twists Asuka up in the tree of woe, nailing her spine with a few knees before slipping out of the ring and pulling her back by her hair.

Emma lets go of the hair pull and reenters the ring. The referee admonishes her, allowing Dana to slip in and do some hair pulling of her own. Emma hits Asuka with the Emmamite Sandwich and goes for the pin, but Asuka kicks out. Emma attempts another pin, but doesn’t even earn a one-count. Asuka is angry, screaming as she crawls to the corner and attempts to use the ropes to get to her feet. Emma nails her with right hands, but Asuka starts to fight back. The two perform a bit of a tete-a-tete with rope runs before Asuka wins the exchange with a flying hip attack.

Asuka hits kicks to Emma’s chest, and though her last kick is caught, Asuka manages to stay in control, hitting Emma with strikes to the head. Emma ducks a kick and socks Asuka in the side of the head, dropping her to her knees. She then runs the ropes and hits a dropkick, which only serves to propel Asuka into the ropes and back at Emma with a hip attack. Asuka covers Emma for the pin, but Emma manages to kick out.

Emma backs into a corner and ducks a knee from Asuka, but Asuka stays on her, grabbing her by the hair. Emma backs Asuka into the corner and rolls her into a pin, using the ropes for leverage. The referee notices this just in time and stops his count. Emma argues with the referee and doesn’t notice Asuka creeping up behind her. She ducks Asuka’s spinning kick, but her responding kick is caught, and Asuka twists around to take her down with a German release suplex. She runs the ropes and takes Emma down with a kick to the face.

Asuka grabs Emma by the arm and takes her to the mat for the Asuka Lock! Emma taps out, handing the victory to Asuka. We close out the show with the image of a victorious Asuka grinning ear to ear.

Thoughts: It’s always nice to see a bit of Alexa! It feels like it’s been a while since we’ve seen her, mostly because there are so many Divas in the mix week in and week out. It’s easy for a Diva to get lost in the shuffle, but I think Alexa managed to keep herself in the larger conversation with her victory here. This win allows her to regain some of that lost mojo, and the manner in which she got it – Blake and Murphy’s cheating – elevated it beyond a generic win to a reminder of what makes her a real threat in the division: the constant presence of her “boys.” If she leveraged them correctly, she could easily be Women’s Champion. When the division undergoes a re-shuffling after Bayley’s inevitable departure, that scenario might not be too far off.

Emma and Asuka’s main event was spectacular, taking Asuka to places she’s never been and making Emma – one of the most deserving Divas on the roster – look stronger and smarter than ever. No longer is she underestimating Asuka. No, she’s learned her lesson, which is something heels don’t normally do particularly well. She’s also learned how to get an edge on Asuka: slow her down. Emma went after that strategy with the intelligence of a veteran, using any means necessary to ground Asuka and rob her of her biggest weapon: her speed. It worked for a while, at least, which is more than any other Diva can say.

This really felt like the first time Asuka has been truly challenged, and it couldn’t have come at a better time. Seeing Asuka display weaknesses only makes her match with Bayley that much more compelling. A crack in the facade of the unstoppable Asuka might make those predicting a title change a bit more hesitant; suddenly, the match doesn’t seem so elementary. I’m really not sure who will win – if Asuka’s undefeated streak trumps Bayley’s title reign – but I do know that booking neither Diva as invincible makes for a more compelling story. Each have weaknesses to exploit, and half the fun will be seeing which strategy wins out. Truly, it’s anybody’s game.
