WWE’s Performance Center has been boosted by the signing of five new female talents.

Two independent wrestlers, a Greco-Roman wrestling competitor, a Crossfit athlete and a bodybuilding bikini competitor have all reported to the performance center.

Paul “Triple H” Levesque commented on the newest talents saying:

“With support from our world-class coaching staff at the WWE Performance Center, these men and women will have the chance to hone their skills and fulfill their dream of becoming a WWE Superstar. Our state-of-the-art training facility gives our talent every opportunity to succeed and grow, and I’m pleased to welcome this new class to WWE.”

Raw Redux (April 11th, 2016): Natalya Gets Robbed by the Dirtiest Players in the Game

Who knew a women’s segment with a celebrity involved could actually be half decent? Whilst WWE still thinks it is ok for their female talent to liaise with (mostly irrelevant) guest stars, it worked last night, and perhaps was the first seed planted in a blossoming storyline.

I am course talking about Dr. Phil. I would have personally preferred to see Jeremy Kyle, Ricki Lake or Trisha Goddard, but believe it or not, Doc pulled it out of the bag. Let’s see what I’m talking about.

The segment in question is actually the first of the night spotlighting WWE’s women’s division. Our champion Charlotte is chatting to her cobweb father Ric Flair, who tells that she looks so gorgeous tonight. Or something to that effect. Let’s be real, she has never looked better – the cape is an awesome new touch.

Breaking up the nauseating complimenting session is Dr. Phil. He says that he can see why Ric is proud of everything his daughter has accomplished, but he himself is certainly not proud of Charlotte! He is sick of her using her Dad to cheat to win on every given occasion. He tells her to stand on her own too feet. Use that two things you stand on to move out of Ric’s shadow Lotty!

Righteo, it’s match time now. Believe it or not, Charlotte will be defending her WWE Women’s Championship against Natalya! It took Nattie 8 years, but she has finally gotten a chance at WWE’s most prestigious prize for female talent.

Hooray for fancy in-ring introductions from Lilian too!

After the match, Natalya spoke with Rich Brennan on Raw Fallout, explaining that Charlotte hasn’t earned her respect whatsoever. The war has just begun apparently. Yoko Ono will be crying somewhere hearing that.

Like Charlotte, another woman with a man by her side is next in the spotlight. Last week’s amazing returnee Maryse is having a fit at a production worker, annoyed that the water they’ve been supplied with is not imported, nor did he take the blue M&Ms out of Miz‘s supply. How very dare he?! I’ve heard those blue ones are right full of additives. You just can’t get the staff these days. JoJo interrupts to ask a few questions, and the segment closes with new Number One contender Cesaro putting Miz in his place. To quote Rebecca Black, this was fun, fun, fun, fun!

Finally, Rich is back and he approached Becky Lynch backstage for some YouTube exclusive content, asking her about her next potential challenge – Emma. The shade about stealing things – I cannot!

Thoughts: What a fantastic episode of Raw! Before we get to the major consequences of the episode, let’s address the smaller points of interest.

How refreshing is it for Maryse to be back?! I know the term Diva has been ditched as a gender-wide blanket term, but that doesn’t mean to say we can’t have any on the roster at all. Maryse – and The Miz actually – are the absolute epitome of Diva. I loved their comedic antics. The Miz was becoming a lost cause if I’m honest, basically being used to put others over without being a total jobber. Maryse is a breath of fresh, Quebec air for Miz’s character, adding another dimension to the overall package. The two together are more comedic (without being insufferable or Santino-like), more entertaining and more dangerous. Two’s company after all!

I love that WWE are pushing Becky vs Emma as a side feud. WWE have done a so-so job handling two feuds over the last few months, what with the many break-ups of our triangle of recent factions. It would have been nice for that segment to have been shown on Raw, but consistency is consistency. WWE lacked that for the longest time so we can’t complain. Becky continued to show she is a solid talker and I can’t wait to see this really fresh pairing go at it. Emma will bring the cold shoulder and Becky can provide the “FIIIIRRREE!”

Charlotte and Natalya once again put on a fantastic match. Natalya didn’t have the stereotypical huge comeback, which felt fresh, as did the back-and-forth feel of the entire match. I loved how the two of them transitioned from submission to submission – Charlotte’s way of applying the figure-four was fantastic. This was a slick affair that had no downsides for me.

Dr. Phil’s words to Charlotte were also pretty interesting – will she see that she can win on her own and ditch Ric? Even if she resorts to cheating by herself, she will have done that on her own accord and merit, ensuring that she will be the only one to take any credit for her successes. I think we’re heading down that route.

Ric getting Charlotte disqualified just as Charlotte tapped out to Natalya was classic professional wrestling storytelling which I absolutely loved. Natalya was so close to earning her first title reign in 6 years, only for it to be cruelly taken away at the last moment. The fans ate it up too which is great to see. This type of interference was also brand new for Ric, ensuring that him getting involved is as ingenious as possible before he eventually steps aside from Charlotte’s spotlight.

Either Ric will cost Charlotte the title, or Charlotte will defend it without his help, spelling the end of this pairing. Just how could those potential scenarios transpire? I’m predicting either a match where Ric is banned from ringside or a match that has both Ric and Jim Neidhart involved. Could a stipulation match also be in the works? A Lumberjill (god forbid) could neutralise Ric’s machiavellian behavior, or could a Cage Match be on the horizon to keep the Nature Boy out? Natalya knows one of two things about dungeons, and being locked inside a cage is surely a similar environment. If any two girls can pull a match like that off, it is these two!

WWE Main Event Redux (April 6th, 2016): Paige Bursts Emma’s Bubble

0

[media-credit name=”WWE” align=”aligncenter” width=”620″]Paige vs Emma[/media-credit]

Us fans of womens wrestling in the WWE were treated to an extra golden nugget of action this week, a singles match between Paige and Emma on WWE Main Event. ME has been Paige’s regular home over the last few months, and Emma even reappeared on the main roster scene on this show a fortnight ago. Seems like a fitting place for them to clash again right?

Apologies for the video everyone! At least the match has been uploaded. Shame WWE don’t upload high quality images from Main Event or Superstars, or even acknowledge them on their website, so I had to take a picture of Paige and Emma’s Raw match from two weeks ago. Nice of WWE to make it so easy for me to make this post look polished!

Thoughts: Emma can basement dropkick like no other. Every time she clocks someone in the face with one, it’s like they were hit by a car. Her viciousness is so refreshing; we’ve not seen offense this sharp and brutal since Alicia Fox was a fully fledged psychopath. Whether it was throwing Paige to the outside where she clipped her back on the apron or introducing Paige to her new frenemy, the barricade, Emma proved that she really is once of the best at delivering believable offense.

The match itself was a fantastic length and went on quite a while before a rest hold came into play. Even when one did, it was a full nelson and not a basic chin lock. Emma had the submission locked in a variety of positions, even transitioning it into a butterfly suplex at one point.

I definitely enjoyed this match, although the spot calling was quite noticeable again unfortunately. WWE clearly doesn’t edit Main Event because I’m sure they could change audio levels at certain points, which would really help. Why they choose not too is bizarre to me. Anyway, that’s the only negative I have to say regarding what was a lengthy, hard-hitting and spirited performance by both girls. I liked what I saw, and wouldn’t mind seeing it again. Maybe the WWE Women’s Championship could push these two to the next level?

Impact Write-Up (April 5th, 2016): Jade Gets Her Golden Moment

0

Hola Knockout fans and welcome to another weekly edition of Impact Write-Up. After two weeks of determining a new number one contender to Gail Kim‘s Knockouts title, the time has at last come for Gail to defend her title. With both Madsion Rayne and Jade respectively earning their title shots, the odds look to be against the Gail Kim. Let us dive in and see how all of this plays out.

We first find the champion backstage in a huddle meeting with TNA President Dixie Carter and the ever so trouble making Maria Kanellis:

Dixie says that this meeting between the three of them is long overdue, as there seems to be some questionable blank spaces as to how Madison and Jade earned their shots at the Knockouts gold. Maria tries to butter up Dixie by referring to her as a “great and inspirational leader” but the looks on Dixie and Gail’s faces pretty much say what they think of Maria’s high praises.

Turning back to the topic at hand, Dixie blankly asks Maria who she spoke with in management to approve her “Death of the Dollhouse” triple threat match. Maria isn’t able to come up with his (or her) name and neither is Gail when Dixie turns the same question over to her. To solve this little phantom of an issue, Dixie decides to book both Madison and Jade in a match against Gail, all to which the champ naturally agrees to.

Maria then sings more praises to Dixie and tries to pitch some ideas of her own ideas; only to be shut down by Dixie who makes adjourns their quick get together. Maria blames Gail for making Dixie “mad” enough to walk out on both of them and then begins to chase after her inspirational leader.

Maria had little luck sitting Dixie down for a second meeting and instead decided to accompany her husband Mike Bennett for a confrontation with the ass kicking machine, Ethan Carter III.

Time for our Knockouts title triple threat match:

After a short commercial break and ring entrances, our three competitors assemble to the middle of the six sided ring, where the one time Knockouts tag team champions Gail Kim and Madison Rayne quickly work together to land right forearms to Jade. Madison whips Jade to a turnbuckle and hits a running strike. Gail takes a turn to whip Jade to an opposite corner and goes for a running clothesline but Jade ducks out the way. Jade hits a big boot to Madison and tries to hit another to the champion but Gail evades by slipping through the second rope.

Gail punches Jade from the ring apron and Madison tries to capitalize by rolling up Jade from behind but Jade kicks out. Madison goes for three more consecutive pin attempts, all of which Jade manages to kick out of. Gail reenters the ring and takes out both of her challengers with a double clothesline. The champion tries to maintain control of the match but when she goes after Jade again, she ends up being hit with a German suplex.

Jade targets Madison next but hits a stalemate when the two take each other out with a big boot. Things turn back in favor of the champion, as Gail takes out both of her competitors with a DDT/neckbreaker combination! Ninja Kim keeps the combo attacks rolling in, as she also manages to pull out a top rope lucha libre style arm drag/head scissors to keep her foes grounded. Madison is scrambled to the outside ring, leaving Gail in a one on one circumstance with Jade.

Gail whips Jade to the ropes but Jade uses this boost to hit an outside dive to Madison. The champion tries to pull Jade back into the ring by grabbing a handful of her hair but Jade fights back with a kick to the head. Jade stays on the outside premises, where she displays her strength with a carrying chokehold to Madison before taking her out completely with a running dropkick.

Back in the ring, Gail climbs the top rope with intentions of a high flying attack but is attacked from behind by Maria. The First Lady of Professional Wrestling is certainly having a busy night! Maria hits Gail in the back with the Knockouts title, causing Jade to reenter the ring and take advantage of Maria’s sneak attack by landing her STO maneuver to put Gail down for the three count. Maria gladly hands the Knockouts title to referee Earl Hebner, who goes on to raise the arm of the new Knockouts Champion Jade!

And rounding things up for the Knockouts this week is Rosemary, who joins her Decay clan in delivering a dark themed riddle to TNA Tag Team Champions Beer Money.

Thoughts: After a little over 200 TV days, the reign of Gail Kim as Knockouts champion has come to an end. For such a lengthy reign, it sure wasn’t a memorable one, in my opinion anyway. For me, part of the problem comes from the fact that Gail won the title back when TNA were in their transitional period of moving from Destination America over to Pop TV. It ate time away from seeing Gail as champion as those months were used for what was (a biding time strategy) the World Title Series.

But even when TNA found comfort in their new home of Pop TV, the Knockouts title was still lost in the shuffle between The Dollhouse/Beautiful People feud. It felt like only a handful of times we actually got to see the Knockouts title defended and Gail came across as a non-factor kind of champion when getting placed in the middle. All of these reasons make me relief in, a way, to see the title now change hands. This now gives us a chance to see thing freshen up for the Knockouts title picture, assuming TNA are committed to deliver on that.

I’m ecstatic to see Jade come out with the gold! She was, after all, being polished for this very moment; before and after her time with The Dollhouse stable. However, I do have to say the way she won the Knockouts title was a bit disappointing. She wins the title in a very short title match; although that may have been as a result of Gail being in much pain throughout the match. After all, Gail was limping at some points in the match and it would explain the weak finish to the match. With the proper time setting, I know all three of these women could put on a much better match.

I can somewhat forgive Maria’s involvement as TNA are clearly stretching this feud between her and Gail. My only hope is that this doesn’t take away too much focus on Jade’s first reign as champion. Perhaps Maria can continue this ongoing feud with Gail while Jade enters a full on feud with someone like Madison Rayne. Or maybe an arriving Cherry Bomb can stir things up? As always, only time will tell!

Lucha Underground Analysis (April 6th, 2016): A Bad Night for Moths and Kobras

0

Howdy everyone and welcome to this week’s Lucha Underground Analysis. Whilst this week’s episode didn’t feature as many women’s matches as last week’s 3 (THREE?!), we got two bouts featuring Luchadoras last night, and I’m pretty stoked for that. Our fourth ever female vs female match took place, as Ivelisse faced off against Sexy Star. Mariposa was also in action in a very, very, very dysfunctional trios tag team tournament match. That’s right guys, Dario Cueto‘s booking is as brilliantly bonkers as ever. Prepare for some serious strange bedfollows! It worked for Ivelisse, Angelico and Son of Havoc, so lightning could strike twice, right? Throw in a defiant Catrina appearance and we have the makings of quite the epic hour of programming!

Opening the show this week is a tough test for Trios Tag Team Champion, Ivelisse. She faces off with the slippery, undefeated customer that is Kobra Moon.

Second on the agenda tonight is Sexy Star. She is working out backstage when The Mac asks for her moral support at ringside tonight. Sexy is normally inspiring and carefree, and the abuse she suffered at the hands of Marty Martinez and Mariposa clearly gets to her as she’s pumping that iron. Let it all out Sexy!

Mariposa is in action for the second week in a row, teaming with her brother and one of her rivals The Mac, to go against the equally ridiculous team of The Crew and Joey Ryan. Although for us viewers, this trio isn’t as weird as it seems as Cortez and Joey are undercover police officers working together! They still don’t like each other though, so I guess this team will be as dysfunctional as Dario Cueto wanted.

After the match, Sexy Star makes an appearance. For the first time ever, she goes majorly batshit! Give me more of this please. I felt like this after seeing Sexy go to town on Mariposa.

[media-credit id=9982 align=”aligncenter” width=”500″]gaga gif[/media-credit]

Finally, Catrina is seen after the main event commanding Mil Muertes into battle with Matanza. Can we see Black Lotus and Catrina beat each other’s asses please? Thanks.

Thoughts: What a bloody fun episode! First off, Ivelisse vs Kobra Moon was absolutely fantastic. They got way more time than I thought they would, and both girls put on such a refreshing match. The MMA feel with the girls jockeying for position with submissions time and time again was really innovative, and not what you would normally see on a wrestling product. I was really into seeing them going for rope breaks often, and showcasing various holds – it felt like the match could end at any moment. Kobra Moon’s butterly lock utilization along with her headscissor crucifix choke through the ropes were super innovative, the latter of which I have never seen before. This was edge-of-your-seat stuff.

Another thing I was majorly fond of? Ivelisse getting to establish a finisher. I feel like she hasn’t really done that yet in Lucha Underground, so that was great to see. Despite being a champion, Ivelisse winning was kind of an upset, so I was digging seeing that. On the other hand, I am torn seeing Kobra losing in what seems like a random loss. If this isn’t part of a bigger story about to kick off, then why couldn’t Kobra have had the prestige of being involved in Aztec Warfare? I’ll reserve judgement until this hopefully unfolds a little more.

As for Mariposa and Sexy, I was a fan. Having seen Sexy go off the register with her anger, I’m so intrigued to learn of the extent of the torture she went through. Seeing her range from extreme introversion to banshee-like rage has got me a bit more into this story. The Mac’s involvement is still too random though.

Although on the losing team, Mariposa impressed me yet again. Logically and looking at what happened with my storyline goggles on, Mariposa wasn’t involved in the decision, and she was attacked after she wrestled a match. Her domineering image wasn’t shattered too badly here. In-ring wise, Melissa proved just how versatile a talent she is. Normally, she is hard-hitting and tends to operate at a more ground-based, slower pace. Here, she was flipping, rope-walking and hurricanrana-ing! Deliciously dynamic! Keep it up girls – we’re loving it!

Nikki Storm Signed By WWE?

0

[media-credit id=2 align=”aligncenter” width=”620″]nikkistorm1[/media-credit]

It looks like Scottish wrestling sensation Nikki Storm has signed with the WWE.

Firstly, Nikki’s recent UK appearances would indicate that a change is on the horizon for her. Back on March 20th, Nikki lost her Pro Wrestling: EVE Championship to Rhia O’Reilly, less than one month after winning it and starting her historic third reign.

“The Best in the Galaxy” then lost a Loser Leaves ICW match against Sammii Jayne at Insane Championship Wrestling earlier this month.

But that’s not all there is to the story. Despite being written out of a local promotion’s plans, that doesn’t guarantee anything, right? Since her loss at ICW, Nikki’s trainer Damo O’Connor has taken to Facebook, explaining that Nikki is off to America, and is ready for the “Universe”.

Nikki Storm WWE

This is not the first time that Nikki has been rumoured to be reporting to NXT. Last September, The Wrestling Observer stated that Nikki was potentially under contract alongside Asuka. The same publication thought Nikki was undergoing final medical tests back in October, but it appears that Nikki’s wait is finally over.

Congratulations Nikki!

Jade Wins the Knockouts Championship

jade[Photo:ImpactWrestling.com]

Tonight on Impact Wrestling, a new Knockouts Champion was crowned in Jade.

Jade won the title by defeating Knockouts Champion Gail Kim and Madison Rayne in a triple threat match. The match saw action take place inside and outside the ring. In the end, however, an interfering Maria Kanellis would cost Gail the title when she attacked Gail from behind with the belt, allowing Jade to hit an STO for the finish.

The win puts an end to Gail Kim’s fifth reign as Knockouts Champion.

Media Round-up: The World Reacts to WWE Women’s Division revival

[media-credit name=”WWE” align=”aligncenter” width=”620″]WWE Women's Championship[/media-credit]

WrestleMania 32 last Sunday was a historic evening that saw the end of World Wrestling Entertainment’s Diva branding, and the dawn of a new era with WWE’s female talent labelled as Superstars like their male colleagues.

Such a monumental move towards roster-wide equality didn’t go unnoticed, with various media outlets from inside and outside of the sports entertainment community reacting positively to the news.

Washington-based media organisation NPR referenced #GiveDivasAChance and comments made by Stephanie McMahon back in July 2015 in their piece, which stated: “WWE’s decisions to add more female performers to its roster and strike “diva” from its vernacular helps put male and female WWE performers on more equal footing, but it’s also good for business.”

Diva Dirt was approached by NPR to comment on the changes, with our TV Reviewer and News Reporter Jack sharing his thoughts on the “absolutely huge” development: “The term ‘Divas’ fit their [WWE’s] female characters back in the day when the product was not as child-friendly, with women competing in matches such as bra and panties matches.

“Now the WWE measure their female athletes on their skill in the ring, rather than their looks. The girls are now given the chance to prove that their matches aren’t blink-and-you’ll-miss-it bathroom breaks, they are unmissable events.”

Newsweek reflected on the Divas Championship – “a gaudy, silver-and-pink butterfly-shaped belt that was difficult to take seriously”, believing that the “dumping” of that title and the re-branding of the women’s division has led to achieving “a semblance of parity between its male and female athletes”, a decision that “cannot be understated”.

Elsewhere, GQ described Sunday’s flagship event as as “the night women won WrestleMania”. The report noted: “To coincide with that change in branding, the WWE Women’s Championship was revealed, replacing the aforementioned travesty of a belt. It was an impactful moment that held true weight. In front of 100,000 of the most impassioned wrestling fans in the world, a true revolution was unfurling.”

Finally, Digital Spy described WrestleMania’s triple threat between new WWE Women’s Champion Charlotte, Becky Lynch and Sasha Banks as “match of the night, hands down”, elaborating further that “all three women owned WrestleMania”.

Raw Redux (April 4th, 2016): Submissions, Slaps and Surprises Open New Superstar Era

0

The WWE took a huge leap Sunday night at WrestleMania, ditching the Diva terminology in favor of Superstar branding across their entire roster. Charlotte, Sasha Banks and Becky Lynch proved they were worthy of that moniker, stealing the show on the Grandest Stage of Them All.

Last night’s Raw did a good job of welcoming the future, showcasing a division with phenomenal talent, historic prestige and unparalleled personalities. The very short match length aside, the Raw After WrestleMania lived up to the hype.

Our first Divas sighting of the night was Summer Rae. Whilst her entrance was cut (some things may never change), she did get to cut a promo in the ring, which was a treat to see. Summer of course fueled her own ego, putting down her opponent for the night, her former BFF cohort, Sasha Banks. Judging by a BEASTLY slap to the face, I guess Sasha isn’t mucking around.

Up next, we turn our attention to the conclusion of the Intercontinental Title match between new champ Zack Ryder (I’m just as shocked as everyone else) and The Miz. Zack winning may have been shocking, but things are about to get a whole lot more surprising!

The Miz gets in the face of Zack Ryder’s Dad, who is at ringside. Mr. Ryder (perhaps the best on-screen parent since Agnes J. Bateman) then shoves Miz to the ground, to a large pop from the crowd. Out of nowhere, none other than MARYSE bursts onto the scene. That’s right, the badass that once did this. I can’t find the original video but the one below more or less captures the moment. Maryse took flowers from a fan, and then gave them to another fan. Oh, the shade.

Whacking Zack’s Dad square in the face is the distraction Miz needs to win his fifth Intercontinental Title! I absolutely popped hard for the blonde lady in the background who took that slap way too seriously! The security guard (who just so happened to be female – ironic considering WWE never have female security) who was restraining the former two-time Divas Champion nearly ruined the entire segment but not letting Maryse go, but she thankfully did, allowing the A-List Lovebirds to enjoy a celebratory smooch.

On Raw Fallout, Maryse and Miz posed for selfies backstage, and were interrupted by Scott Hall.

Our final segment of the night was a biggie. Charlotte’s official Women’s Championship presentation was to go ahead, and all of the active Divas were invited. Lita was on hand to conduct the ceremony, with guests including Alicia Fox, Becky Lynch, Emma, Eva Marie, Lana, Naomi, Natalya, Paige, Sasha Banks, Summer Rae and Tamina.

Finally, if you want to see WWE personalize Charlotte’s WWE Women’s Championship with her side plates, then take a look at this little nugget below.

Thoughts: I am super excited about the first night within WWE’s new Women’s Championship era – who would have thought we would ever see the day?

Addressing Summer and Sasha’s match first, I am positive about it. WWE was smart to give, arguably, their most over female character air time, and have her beat Summer Rae quite convincingly. This felt very similar to NXT’s modern booking of a squash match; whilst the winner was obvious all along, Summer was booked well to prove that she isn’t a pushover.

The match was short, but with so many debuts and returns, I can let that slide. The segment served its purpose, putting Sasha over. Both girls were able to speak on the mic too, showcasing and elevating their characters. We have to be happy with that.

Maryse’s return was amazing. Getting her and Zack’s Dad involved was a path I didn’t think WWE would go down, and just like the unpredictability of Zack winning the belt, I was so here for the shenanigans from Raw.

Maryse was the same brash, headline-grabbing bitch that we’ve always known and loved, and to finally see her on screen with her husband will be really fun. Will she be wrestling too later on down the line? Is she the newest member of the Total Divas cast? I guess we’ll find out in due course.

The only negative from last night? Where the hell was Carmella? Lame WWE, lame. She brings so much to Enzo and Cass and is part of the package. I’m disappointed to see she didn’t debut alongside them. You never know though, she may show up in a few weeks to win against The Dudley Boyz.

Looking to the new Women’s Championship division, the possibilities are tantalizing. I love that Charlotte not only became the first of the new champions, but she is also the first person to ever hold the WWE Women’s Championship, the WWE Divas Championship and the NXT Women’s Championship. The only other woman who can do that? Paige. Speaking of records, only Alicia, Natalya, Nikki, Paige and now Maryse have the chance to join Beth, Charlotte, Layla, Melina, Michelle and Mickie as women to have held both the WWE Women’s and Divas Championships. I think I should start a Twitter facts account!

I really enjoyed the segment, which opened with a nice celebratory tone… that quickly turned into Charlotte bigging-up herself and her pet fossil. Ric‘s inclusion was once again perfectly booked, with the Divas walking out and stealing the spotlight from Charlotte and him once she started rambling on about her Dad. The girls aren’t putting up with that shit anymore, especially Nattie! I thought WWE were going to have her win the title last night and I started doing backflips inside, and although that did not end up happening, I’m here for Tal and Charlotte colliding again. Their RoadBlock match was just that, a match, so I’m excited to see a program between the two. It’ll be The Harts vs The Flairs on the main roster. Maybe Jim Neidhart can even the odds for Natalya too?

One thing is for certain, the girls’ abilities are what matter here, and my god I am excited about where that will lead us. Diva Dirt readers, welcome to the new era.

A Message From the Editor-in-Chief

0

I’ll cut right to the chase.

Those of you who listened to Thursday’s final episode of Diva Dirt Weekly will know what’s up: as of today, I’m stepping down from my role as Editor-in-Chief of Diva Dirt. The reason why is simple: I want to have the time to pursue other dreams. For the time being, I’ll remain as an advisor, providing feedback and advising on the direction of the site. For all intents and purposes, though, my time as a hands-on contributor to Diva Dirt has come to an end.

Also departing will be Adrian, Chris, Cryssi, Eleri, Jake and Steven, but fear not: Jack, Josue, Kyle, Kevin and a fresh crop of recruits will stay on board to carry Diva Dirt into the future.

I’ll admit: the prospect of thoroughly chronicling my time with this website and the people I’ve been honored to share it with is incredibly daunting. I’m afraid I can’t do it or them justice or that, if I try, I’ll come across as some pompous asshole. I’m not here to eulogize Diva Dirt, because it’s not dying. It’s evolving. So, I’ll instead concisely thank those who have made the last eight years possible and hope that I can convey my gratitude that way.

First, the team. From Melanie (my original partner in crime!), Jason Deadrich (the reason this website is even live right now!), Adrian, Bobby, Chris, Cryssi, David, Eric, Eleri, Jack, Jake, Jen, Josue, Katelyn, Kevin, Kyle, Lee, Shanti, Steven, Stew (RIP) and Tiffany to everyone who’s contributed in big or small ways, like creating Diva Dirt Hype videos or writing guest pieces: I hope every single one of you realizes that, without your hard work, sacrifice and generous volunteering of your time, Diva Dirt wouldn’t have made it this far. Hell, it probably wouldn’t have made it out of 2008. I’m sure if you were to ask Melanie, she’d say the same thing. The team was the lifeblood of this site; Melanie and I just took turns steering it. All of you have been (and many continue to be!) cherished friends, and I’m confident that those friendships will live on for years to come.

Second, the wrestlers. Back when we established Diva Dirt in March 2008, I could’ve never envisioned that it would be read by more than a handful of women wrestlers, nor that any of them would contribute to it. Hell, I never thought that any would see it as more than a “dirt sheet”; our original tone didn’t help matters. To my immense surprise and gratitude, though, all of those dreams came to be, thanks to hard work, emotional growth, dedication and our shared love of this sport. Their support means the world to me, from every tweet to every interview. These women deserve a platform that supports them and provides a place for their fans to follow their careers, and I hope that Diva Dirt has and will continue to fill that role admirably.

Last (but certainly not least), the readers. Through the good and the bad – and yes, there has been plenty of bad – I’ve always believed that without the people that read our articles, vote in our polls, comment on posts and follow us on social media, we’d be sunk. We’d be irrelevant. We would have never made it to where we are today. Despite our differences, we all support women’s wrestling. We want to see it flourish. I’m so glad to have taken this crazy journey with all of you.

I guess it’s fitting that my last day at the helm of Diva Dirt is on the day the “Diva” era is being phased out. That gesture on behalf of the WWE means so much to me, but not in the sense that I wish the term “Diva” to be dead and buried. No, I’m excited by this because it’s a big step towards true equality for the women of the WWE. The WWE may not be the ultimate arbiter of gender equality in wrestling, but its efforts will inevitably signal to the rest of the business what can and will be achieved by these incredible women.

Make no mistake: a revolution in women’s wrestling is happening, and I’m unfathomably grateful to have been able to play a tiny part in it.

Thank you.

WrestleMania 32 in Review: The Times, They Are A-Changin’

In many ways, WrestleMania 32 fulfilled the dreams of many a women’s wrestling fan, with two women’s matches gracing the card – one of which stole the show, in many fans’ eyes – and a game-changing announcement in between them. By the end of the gargantuan seven-hour show, the division had changed forever, finally. On the grandest stage of them all, no less.

The first match, which took place on the Kickoff show, pitted Team Total Divas (Alicia Fox, Brie Bella, Eva Marie, Natalya and Paige) against Team B.A.D. and Blonde (Emma, Lana, Naomi, Summer Rae and Tamina).

The second match was, of course, the Triple Threat Divas Title match between Charlotte, Becky Lynch and Sasha Banks. The aforementioned game-changing announcement put a whole new spin on this bout, but I won’t spell that out just yet. Nah, I’ll let it all play out in order.

First thing’s first: the tag match. How will Lana fare in her debut match? Will Brie come out on top of what may be her final outing? Let’s see:

Team Total Divas enter to their show’s theme music, while Team B.A.D. and Blonde walk out to Naomi’s music (nice!). Lana’s first wrestling gear is fantastically retro but still cutting edge, which is so fitting for her.

Once both teams are assembled in the ring, Alicia and Summer take the lead. They tie up, Alicia fighting Summer off and kicking her in the back. They battle for control, Summer reversing a suplex attempt into a roll-though DDT. Summer goes for the pin, but Alicia kicks out, springing to her feet and immediately taking back control with a DDT.

Alicia sends Summer into the ropes and hits her with a tilt-a-whirl slam. When she goes for the pin, though, Summer scrambles away towards her corner, tagging in Emma. Tamina enters too, bringing in all the women to posture at each other. The referee separates them with some difficulty as we head to a commercial break.

When we return, Eva’s in the ring, squaring off with Emma. Eva ducks Emma’s attack, runs the ropes and hits her with a headscissors takedown. Eva hits a suplex, and then another. After she ponders her choice for a moment, Eva decides to tag in Natalya, and does it with a rough slap. Natalya glares at her teammate and then enters the ring, pulling Emma to her feet. She’s rewarded with a slap to the face and it taken to the heel corner, where Naomi is tagged in.

Natalya starts to fight back, but it’s no good, and Naomi pummels her with a flurry of kicks. Naomi hits a dropkick, but her corner attack is dodged, and Natalya uses the opening to hit a springboard atomic drop, run over her back and flatten her with a dropkick to the chest. She goes for the pin, but Naomi kicks out at two. Natalya tags in Paige, who runs the ropes and, with Natalya propping up Naomi, hits a thunderous clothesline. Paige hits a Shining Wizard and then props up Naomi in the corner, hitting her with a flying knee attack. Paige tosses Naomi across the ring and goes to inflict more damage, but Naomi fights her off.

Naomi runs the ropes and tries to hit Paige with a splash, but it’s dodged, and Naomi flies square into the ropes. Naomi tags in Emma, who manages to fight off Paige and reverse a wheelbarrow attack into a suplex. She covers Paige for the pin, but it’s no good. Emma pummels Paige with right hands and stands on her hair, yanking her up by her arms. Emma tags in Lana, who swiftly kicks Paige in the back of the head.

Paige starts to fight back, shoving Lana away, but Lana comes firing back with a high kick to the face. Lana taunts Brie, drawing her into the ring. The referee forces her out as Lana heads to her corner, belting out a mocking “YES!” chant. Lana tags in Tamina, who goes for the pin. Paige kicks out.

Tamina hits a suplex before going for another unsuccessful pin attempt. Tamina locks in a chinlock on Paige. Paige fights out, but Tamina stays on her, sending her into the corner and taking her to the top rope. Naomi comes to her aid, drawing out Natalya to even the odds, but the action splinters, and everyone falls out of the ring except for Paige. Paige climbs to the rope and flies to the outside, taking out Emma, Naomi, Summer and Tamina in one fell swoop!

Lana yells for her opponents to get up as Paige reenters the ring. Tamina soon follows, stopping Paige from tagging out. Tamina takes Paige to her corner and tags in Emma, who brings her into a neighboring corner and stomps her down. Paige catches her follow-up kick and slams the back of her head onto the bottom turnbuckle with a schoolboy maneuver. Paige manages to tag in Brie just as Emma tags in Naomi, and the two charge at each other, Brie taking control with a clothesline. She runs to the opposite corner, decking Lana and knocking her to the outside before turning back to Naomi and hitting her with Nikki Bella‘s knee attack.

Brie drops Naomi to her knees and hits her with a barrage of knees to the chest. Naomi stumbles to her feet, only to be doubled over and hit with the Bella Buster! Brie goes for the pin, but Lana breaks it up! This brings in Natalya, who hits her with a discus clothesline. Tamina hits Naomi with a Samoan drop. Eva takes out Tamina with the Sliced Red #2. Summer decks Eva with a spinning heel kick. Alicia hits Summer with her scissors kick. Emma takes down Alicia with a double underhook suplex. Paige tosses Emma with a fallaway slam. Naomi finishes the streak with a Rear View to Paige. Brie then reenters the fray, hitting Naomi with a forearm.

Naomi props herself up against the ropes, seemingly set up for Brie’s running knee strike, but Naomi catches Brie’s boot and stops her in her tracks. She shoves Brie back and takes her down with a dropkick. Naomi follows her to the corner, where she goes for a split legged moonsault. Brie puts her knees up just in time, though, nailing Naomi in the midsection.

Brie heads to the top rope, but Lana pops up and shoves her off, sending her crashing into the ropes and to the mat. Naomi pulls Brie by the hair, only to be tossed to the mat instead! Brie springs into action, locking in the Yes Lock out of nowhere! Naomi taps! Team Total Divas wins!

Team Total Divas celebrates their win and are soon joined by Nikki Bella. The group give each other a group hug and hoist Brie onto their shoulders, victorious.

In a post-match interview, Brie and Nikki spoke about this emotional moment:

Brie acknowledges the emotion of the moment, dedicating it all to Nikki and her husband Daniel Bryan. Nikki says she’s emotional, knowing that she’ll probably never share the ring with Brie again. She is hopeful, though, predicting that they’ll have a new “Mama Bella” soon.

Later on in the pre-show, none other than Lita made a huge game-changing announcement about the future of the Divas division:

After taking us on a journey from the inception of the WWE’s women’s division to the Divas Revolution, the WWE Hall of Famer announced the introduction of a brand new Women’s Championship. She unveiled it for the crowd and revealed that the winner of tonight’s Triple Threat match will be the first woman to hold the belt.

Shortly before that match took place, we got another look at new WWE Hall of Famer Jacqueline, who joined the Class of 2016 out on the stage for their customary encore.

Next up is the maaaaain event…well, for us!

With Lita keeping guard of the new Women’s Title belt at ringside, Becky Lynch, Sasha Banks and the current (and final) Divas Champion Charlotte each received their own amped up entrances: Becky got steam pyro and a new tron, Sasha got Snoop Dogg performing her entrance and Charlotte got a Flair robe and a whole lot of confetti. The times, they are indeed a-changin’!

After the new belt is held high and the bell is rung, the match begins. Charlotte attacks both Becky and Sasha, prompting them to work together to knock her to the mat. That alliance is short-lived, though, as Sasha takes Becky to the mat for an early pin attempt. Becky kicks out. Becky takes Sasha to the mat and goes for a pin of her own. Sasha kicks out. Sasha goes for another pin, which Becky bridges out of. She goes for a backslide pin, which Charlotte breaks up by rolling her into a pin. Sasha breaks that up with yet another pin attempt. Becky busts that up, and Sasha sweeps her off her feet for another cover. Becky bridges out, but walks right into a big boot from Charlotte.

Charlotte and Sasha circle each other and Sasha takes control, hitting Charlotte with a “skin the cat” maneuver into a hurricanrana! Sasha does the Eddie Guerrero shimmy, paying tribute to her late hero in both move, attitude and gear. Love it! Sasha runs towards Charlotte in the corner, but she’s caught, and Charlotte drops the back of her head onto the top turnbuckle. She drives a shoulder into Sasha, but is suddenly detained by Becky, who grabs her by the wait. Sasha narrowly misses her attempt at a sunset flip, but Becky makes the most of the situation, tossing Charlotte with a suplex. Sasha pulls Becky into a pin attempt, but Becky kicks out.

Becky goes for a suplex on Sasha but is shoved off. Becky maintains control, though, hitting two arm drags and locking in an armbar. Sasha quickly gets free. She knocks Becky to the mat and runs the ropes, only to be taken out by Charlotte, who drags her out of the ring and tosses her back-first into the ropes. Charlotte celebrates and doesn’t notice Becky, who flies off of the ring apron and takes her out. Becky tosses Charlotte back into the ring and fends off an early Figure Four attempt. She hits the champ with a reverse DDT and covers her for the pin, but it’s not enough.

Becky climbs to the second rope, but is stopped in her tracks by a vicious right hand from Charlotte. Charlotte drops hit spine-first onto her shoulder and goes for a follow-up pin, but Becky kicks out. Charlotte slams Becky’s head onto the mat and goes for another pin, but it’s still no good. Charlotte works the back of Becky’s left leg and attempts a Figure Four, but Becky fights her off. Sasha then reenters the ring and takes Charlotte to the corner, where Becky halts a double knee drop attempt by tossing her all the way to the floor outside!

Becky charges at Charlotte in the corner, but gets nothing but turnbuckle. Charlotte goes for a pin, but Becky kicks out and immediately grabs hold of Charlotte’s left arm, desperately trying to lock in the Dis-arm-her. Charlotte rolls her up into a pin, and Becky kicks out. Becky takes Charlotte to the mat and tries for the armbar once more, prompting some failed distraction by Ric. Becky locks in the armbar, but before Charlotte can tap, Sasha breaks it up. Becky tosses Sasha out of the ring again, leaving her to be taken down by Charlotte. Charlotte locks in the Figure Four, but doesn’t manage to bridge it into a Figure Eight before Sasha comes diving onto them both with a frog splash!

Sasha covers Charlotte for the pin, but Charlotte narrowly kicks out. Sasha pulls Charlotte to her feet and hits an elevated double knee drop, covering her for the pin. Becky breaks it up and hits her with a German release suplex. She then hits Charlotte with a pumphandle suplex and goes for the pin. Sasha breaks it up. Becky gets to her feet and ends off Sasha with uppercuts, blocking her backstabber attempt and rolling it into a pin attempt. Sasha kicks out. Becky tries to lock in an armbar, but Sasha fights out of it, backing into the corner. Becky tries to hit her with a springboard kick, but Sasha dodges it, planting double knees into Becky instead.

Sasha tosses Becky to the center of the ring. She goes for the elevated knee drop, but Becky ducks under her, leaving her to run the ropes and fly to the outside, taking out Charlotte with a senton! Sasha has a “WOOO!”-off with Ric, and neither telegraph Becky’s flying attack, which hits Ric and takes him out. Sasha tosses Charlotte into the ring and goes to follow her, only to be dragged back out of the ring by Becky. Both women are down, leaving Charlotte to scale the turnbuckle and fly off the top rope with a moonsault to the outside! She takes out both Becky and Sasha!

Charlotte tosses Becky and Sasha into the ring and hits tandem Natural Selections on both! She covers Becky for the pin, but it’s not enough, so she tries it on Sasha, who kicks out as well. She tries once more on both, but only earns two more near falls. Charlotte tosses Becky into the corner and turns her attention to Sasha, who she tries to take out with a powerbomb. Sasha hangs on and tries to hit a hurricanarana, but Charlotte blocks that too, hoisting Sasha back up into a powerbomb position. Sasha still fights, twisting into an electric chair position right before being dropped by Becky’s dropkick! Charlotte and Sasha are down!

Becky pins Charlotte, but the champ kicks out. Becky then opts for the Dis-arm-her, and holds it for quite a while before Sasha breaks it up, taking her down with the backstabber and locking in the Bank Statement! Becky crawls towards the ropes, but Sasha strands her by flipping over and locking in the hold once more! Charlotte breaks up the hold and locks Sasha in the Figure Four. Sasha fights back, though, reversing the hold for a moment before Charlotte manages to regain control and bridge it into the Figure Eight!

Sasha reaches for the ropes and Becky helps her, pulling her to the edge of the ring to force a rope break. Becky enters the ring and, after a moment, all three Superstars get to a kneeling position. Charlotte blasts both Becky and Sasha with chops to the chest until they begin to fight back, both women pummeling Charlotte with right hands. They then turn their attentions on each other, striking at the same time and taking each other out. Becky and Sasha get to their feet and begin to exchange blows, but they’re interrupted by Charlotte, who takes out Sasha with a spear!

Becky drives Charlotte into the corner and lifts her to the top rope. Charlotte fights back as Sasha joins the exchange, knocking Becky to the mat. Before Sasha can perform any sort of attack on Charlotte, though, Becky’s back, striking Sasha and prompting her to drop into in a tree of woe position. Becky climbs around her and takes hold of Charlotte once more, taking her all the way to the mat with a huge suplex! Becky turns back to Sasha, but Sasha flips free of her suplex attempt and hits the backstabber! She locks in the Bank Statement! Charlotte quickly reenters the ring and grabs Sasha, tossing her to the outside.

Charlotte locks in the Figure Eight on Becky! Sasha tries to break up the hold, but Ric has her held on the outside, and Becky taps out! Charlotte is your new Women’s Champion!!

Charlotte takes possession of the new belt and holds it high as fireworks blast off both inside and outside AT&T Stadium, marking this historic moment.

Post-show, Charlotte spoke about her new title and the means by which she won it:

Sasha also spoke out, emotionally reflecting on her loss:

Sasha says she put her heart out there. She says she feels honored and proud of what has been accomplished by every woman in the WWE’s past and present. They’ve made history.

Charlotte says the match was electrifying, and though she came up against the Fire and the Boss, she walked out the champ, because she’s the Champ. When asked about the way she won the match – via Ric Flair’s interference – Charlotte says she promised to do everything it takes to make it to the top, and she did it. She says Ric’s interference doesn’t tarnish anything and that she was justified in using him, seeing as how she was “outnumbered” by Becky and Sasha.

Lastly, we must not forget the Queen herself, Stephanie McMahon, who performed an unforgettable introduction for Triple H and took one for the team in his WWE Championship match with Roman Reigns, taking a spear full-on and ultimately failing to help her husband retain the title:

Thoughts: Fun fact: I previously used this Bob Dylan-referencing review title on a SmackDown Redux from 2009. Damn, talk about changing times…

The Kickoff tag match was so much fun. In my opinion, that was how you do a multi-Diva match: give all the Divas definable roles, motivations and moments in the lead-up so, even if the match is fast and furious, there will be a story to glean from it. I loved the little we saw of Lana, and though I wish we could have seen more, it was smart to keep her limited early on, and it was perfectly heelish of her to get a few licks in and then hightail it out of there.

Even the requisite “everyone hit their signature moves!” sequence was more interesting than usual, as it flowed well and the moves were impressive. Naomi’s streak-ending Rear View was a perfect, abrupt ending to it all, like a chase sequence ending with someone running into a wall. Love it.

Though this was obviously meant to be Brie’s big moment, everyone had a little highlight of their own, and it didn’t feel all that perfunctory. It just flowed so much better than the multi-Diva matches of yore. The ending exchange with Naomi was great, making Naomi look strong in fighting off Brie but ultimately succumbing to a fantastically performed Yes Lock. What a way to go out, Brie!

I was bummed to see them cut away so abruptly after the match; I would have loved to see Brie hoisted on their shoulders rather than a shot of the horde of people entering the stadium. Still, it was a sweet moment, especially with Nikki by her side. I’d like to see Brie have one more match on tonight’s Raw, Trish Stratus style, and maybe, finally get her hands on Lana. That would be a nice epilogue to her story, in my opinion. Such an underrated talent and a genuinely lovely person… Brie, you will be missed!

I lovveeeedddd seeing the Women’s Title brought back. It’s been a pipe dream of Diva fans for so long that seeing it actually happen felt surreal. Some have balked at the design but there’s little denying that it’s lightyears ahead of the butterfly belt. Its similarity to the WWE Championship makes it look prestigious, and that’s half the battle when it comes to equality for the women. Even more impressive (in my opinion) was Lita’s insistence that the women of the WWE are more than “Divas”: they are all WWE Superstars. That gesture is enormous and speaks to the WWE’s commitment to ushering in an era of equality. The term “Diva” has held the women back for a long time, and though they’ve done their best to reclaim it and give it a positive connotation, it’s so much more effective to bust down the barriers completely. “Women” is the only qualifier they need, if that. Time will tell if the WWE can follow up on this in the long term, but for now, this was one hell of a first step. I’m bowled over.

The Divas Title Women’s Title match was just phenomenal. It felt like the culmination of yeaaaaarrrsss of blood, sweat and tears shed by every Diva who stepped into the ring. For these women to get the chance to steal the show with a long, exciting, well-paced match with spots that brought the crowd to their feet countless times is incredible. The spirit of NXT was alive here, with shades of the TakeOver: Rival, TakeOver: Unstoppable and TakeOver: Brooklyn coloring every second of this match. Becky, Charlotte and Sasha have worked so damn hard to get here, as has every other Diva. Their combined efforts – and the dogged support of Diva fans – have lead to this, so it’s very much a shared victory, in my opinion.

I’ve seen some complaints about Ric being the deciding factor in the match, but I’ve got to be honest: it didn’t wreck the moment for me. The only reason I would object to Ric’s involvement is if he pulled attention away from the Divas. He has before – the forced kiss on Becky Lynch at the Royal Rumble, anyone? – but here, the story was all about the women. From the camera angles to the commentary team, everything was focused on how this moment affected the competitors in the ring. The camera was so focused on the in-ring action, in fact, that at first you couldn’t even see what was going on with Ric! I think they pulled it off, and as Charlotte said in the post-match interview, it didn’t tarnish anything. If you let it tarnish the moment, it will, but if you see the moment for what it was – a means for Charlotte to win, keep heat on herself and keep both Becky and Sasha looking strong – you’ll see that, in the end, it wasn’t about Ric. It wasn’t about him at all. This wasn’t a man crowning the new Women’s Champion: it was the new Women’s Champion pulling out her tried-and-true strategy to secure the biggest win of her career thus far. It also sets up an interesting angle for Charlotte, post-Mania: she seems unstoppable. As long as Ric’s around, she practically guarantees herself a win. That will force anyone who seeks to unseat her to find a way to neutralize him. I look forward to seeing who accomplishes that, and how.

The match was a journey in itself and quite obviously put these women through the ringer. Their stellar performances and general risk-taking spoke to why they were put in this position in the first place: they’re so fucking good. They’re fearless. There is no better way to usher in a new era for the division than to highlight the style and skill that is bubbling up from NXT. They are the future. This is the future.

That being said, I can’t help but reflect on how perfect the timing of this match, this moment, this night was. As many of you probably know, yesterday was my last day as Editor-in-Chief of Diva Dirt. I’ll be publishing an official goodbye shortly, but I would be remiss if I didn’t cap off this review by reflecting on how WrestleMania 32 tied a exquisite bow on my time at the helm of this wonderful website. It’s been eight years since Diva Dirt was launched, and in that time we’ve gone from subpar women’s representation at WrestleMania to no representation at WrestleMania to this. It makes all of this worthwhile. Much like the WWE’s women’s division, Diva Dirt is exiting one era and entering another. From the bottom of my heart, I hope both surpass those that came before them.

WrestleMania 32 Results: Charlotte is Crowned the New Women’s Champion

Tonight at WrestleMania 32, a new Women’s Champion was crowned.

Divas Champion Charlotte became the first woman to hold the new Women’s Championship when she defeated Becky Lynch and Sasha Banks in a Triple Threat match that served to usher in a new era for the WWE’s women’s division.

Charlotte would win the match thanks to a familiar strategy: using her father, Ric Flair. The WWE Hall of Famer kept Sasha indisposed as Becky found herself trapped in the Figure Eight. The Lass Kicker, stranded in the center of the ring, had no choice but to tap out.

The match that preceded this moment was full of WrestleMania moments. Though the action was fast in the ring, moments outside the ring made an impact too, from Sasha hitting Charlotte with a senton and Becky diving out on Ric Flair to Charlotte hitting a moonsault on both Becky and Sasha on the outside.

Dis-arm-hers and Bank Statements couldn’t get the job done, though, and in the end it was the Figure Eight that allowed the champ to stay the champ – albiet with the new title.

WWE Introduces New Women’s Championship Belt

Tonight at WrestleMania 32, the Divas Championship will give way to the Women’s Championship.

WWE Hall of Famer Lita made the announcement on the WrestleMania 32 Kickoff, revealing the new WWE Women’s Championship in the middle of the ring. She confirmed that the winner of tonight’s Triple Threat match between Becky Lynch, Charlotte and Sasha Banks will hold the new title.

Before making the big reveal, Lita took the audience on a journey from the beginnings of the division to the Divas Revolution, making the case for the women to no longer be considered just Divas, but WWE Superstars.

The rumored rebranding of the division was implicit in Lita’s speech, which sought to elevate the Divas beyond the tired stereotypes and treat them as competitors equal to men.

It’s no secret that today will be the last day many of us work for this amazing site. Over the years, the people behind the scenes have poured countless amounts of blood, sweat, tears, and free-time into this site for little to no payoff. The thing that kept all of us going was our belief that the Divas, and women wrestlers in general, deserved better. They will always deserve better. These girls pour their hearts and souls into their art in order to be respected and to entertain each and every one of us. I thank them and I thank all of you who have supported us over the years.

Now with all that said, let me get my final contribution out of the way and turn superficial, and set the Divas Revolution (and women’s movement as a whole) back a few years and talk about the fashion on display last night at the WWE Hall of Fame banquet! Every year I look forward to this event the most because it’s the one night out of the year that everyone gets to get glammed up and walk a red carpet to celebrate the accolades and achievements of those who paved the way. This year, the fashion was at an all-time high and I had a hard time narrowing down my top five favorite looks. There were definitely some unexpected surprises, some favorites, and a few honorable mentions that we will start with.

Our first honorable mention goes to the Queen of Queen, Brie “Mother Earth” Bella.

A photo posted by Brie Bella (@thebriebella) on

Loved this dress and loved this color on Brie. I appreciate the fact it deviated from what we usually see her in, which is red or black, and I love the simple hair and pretty makeup. Brie doesn’t have to try hard to look amazing, and she was beautiful at the Hall of Fame.

Our second honorable goes to one of the competitor’s in tonight’s triple threat, Mrs. Becky Lynch.

A photo posted by Rebecca Quin (@beckylynchwwe) on

To be fair, the only reason she’s an honorable mention is because I have yet to find a picture of her entire look anywhere. But when I spied her sitting behind Bruno Sammartino last night with a daring plunging neckline, I was absolutely OBSESSED. She looked beautiful from what little we were able to see. Her hair and makeup were on point, and she looked radiant. Oh, and she’s totally my pick to win it all tonight.

Now, for our top five! I had a lot to pick from this year and bringing it in at number five this year is someone you guys might be surprised to see. First of all, this girl took a huge risk with her look. It was unexpected. It was flashy. And honestly, it was downright amazing. JoJo, girl, you stole my heart last night!

This look is EVERYTHING! I love the boho flair, the statement chain, the flowy skirt, the absolute leap of faith it took to even try and wear this. JoJo paired it perfectly with a sleek ponytail and maintained her youthful, fun look. She’s come such a long way since Total Divas, Season One and I guess I can’t really make fun of her for dating Sebastien anymore.

Up next, taking the fourth sport, is none other than Mrs. Summer Slay!

A photo posted by Summer Rae (@daniellemoinet) on

When it comes to fashion, Summer rarely misses, so it’s no surprise to see her bringing her “A” game to the Hall of Fame. Her gown was sleek and beautiful on her, and I loved the fact it had a sheer overlay. Her hair was pretty, the red lipstick was brilliant, but the highlight of Summer’s look for me were her statement earrings. They were perfection.

Taking third place on our list is someone who personally made me do a double take. Every time I’ve ever gone to SHIMMER I have gone above and beyond to avoid making eye contact with this woman because she scares the living shit out of me.

Saraya Knight STUNNED last night. I was not expecting that from her at all. I’m not saying she’s not a gorgeous woman, because obviously she is, but everything about her look last night was sinful in the best way. The color of her gown was so flattering against her stand-out hair and I love, love, LOVED her makeup so much. The lip color was fantastic and I just can’t gush enough about how fabulous Saraya looked.

Sidenote: I adored Paige’s gown the first time she wore it at the Oscars and I adored it just as much last night. Her new hair looks great as well.

Runner-up and Best Dressed are tricky for me because I have three looks and two spots. Trying to pick between these three women is difficult because all three of them went above and beyond last night. One of them brought something so different and so unique that it’s hard to make a case against her. The second looked better than she ever has before and pulled off a color that is so hard to wear. The third lady has set the beauty bar so incredibly high that we all waited to see what her polarizing personality would come up with for the most glamorous night of the year and she did not disappoint whatsoever.

My decision for Best Dressed boils down to this. When I compared these three looks side-by-side there was only one that I couldn’t find any fault with whatsoever. Therefore, we have two runner-ups for Best Dressed.

Our second runner-up, is our other Bella goddess, Queen Nikki Bella.

Like JoJo, Nikki took a huge risk with a look that probably shouldn’t have worked on anyone. Her two-piece gown gave us several little teasing glimpses of her amazing body and the red accents she added to such as her shoes, clutch, and lipstick really made her stand out. If there was ever a woman who could make a neck brace look a fashion accessory, it’s Nikki, and I appreciate her trying something so different and making it work on such a big night.

Our first runner-up and lady-in-waiting so to speak if our best dressed cannot fulfill her duties is none other than Eva Marie!

Really, there’s nothing wrong with Eva’s look at all. And I know people reading this are probably scratching their heads as to why she’s not the best dressed. It’s simple. When I to go through and nitpick the crap out of everything, it all boiled down to a hair style. I didn’t really care for Eva’s up do. In fact, I kind of felt bad for whoever had to sit behind her. I think long, gorgeous mermaid hair would have been better but like I said, that is just nitpicking. Everything about Eva Marie is beautiful. I’ve said time and time again that she has my favorite look ever for a WWE Diva. Last night, she exceeded my expectations and I personally can’t wait to see what kind of gear she wears tonight.

So where does that leave us? Oh yes! The coveted Best Dressed award! There’s no trophy, just bragging rights knowing that you truly looked better than all your peers and all the WAGs at the Hall of Fame. Dana Warrior, Natalya, Stephanie McMahon, Naomi, and Roman Reigns’ wife, Galina, all had drop dead gorgeous looks. But the person who stood out to me above everyone else was….

That’s right: Emma!

We all know Emma is beautiful, but last night took her to an entirely different level. I love her fashion anyway, but the purple gown with sheer black cutouts she wore was perfect. Everything about her look so was perfectly her. She had the best makeup as well. That cat eye, girl stop! I’ve never seen a more perfect cat eye in my life. And if all that wasn’t enough, Emma decided to throw caution to the wind and also do a statement lip. I have searched my entire adult life for a dark purple lipstick that flatters me and I respect the hell out of any woman who can rock such a bold lip.

Congratulations, Emma. You won the night in so many ways.

And that also wraps up this column and my time with Diva Dirt. Thank you for six years of great memories, laughs, and personal growth. Thank you for allowing me to help fight the good fight, for giving me a platform to write and express my opinions on women’s wrestling, and for letting me be involved in the business in some miniscule way.

For the last time… Cryssi, out.

WrestleMania Rewind: AJ Lee & Paige vs. Brie & Nikki Bella (WrestleMania 31)

All week leading up to WrestleMania 32, we’re revisiting the most memorable women’s wrestling moments in WrestleMania’s 32 year history, tackling a total of 26 WrestleManias.

WrestleMania 31

March 29th, 2015

At the thirty-first WrestleMania, the #GiveDivasAChance movement brought forth a Mania match that saw two very different Diva duos lobby for a “chance” to show that they were what the division needed. The “Freaks & Geeks” team of AJ Lee and Paige faced off with the dominant duo of Brie and Nikki Bella.

Nikki was well on her way to becoming the longest-reigning Divas Champion, but her title wasn’t on the line here. Instead, she and Brie worked to prove that they were more than “cookie cutter” Diva prototypes. Meanwhile, “frenemies” AJ and Paige were all about breaking the mold permanently. In the end, the “friend” side of the equation won out for AJ and Paige, who picked up the win thanks to AJ’s Black Widow submission.

This would be AJ’s penultimate match as a Diva, her final match taking place the following night on Raw. She came out on top there as well, exiting the WWE on a victorious note.

Beth Phoenix Pregnant With Her Second Child

Beth Phoenix and Edge are expecting their second child, and its arrival is just around the corner.

The couple announced the happy news in an interview with WWE.com, revealing that Beth is already eight months along.

Beth and Edge – who attended last night’s WWE Hall of Fame ceremony – also shared updates on Beth’s life as a mother and grad student. Edge gushed about his wife, crediting her with holding down their life at home while he films his WWE Network series:

“Beth has been, somehow, chasing around a two-year-and-four-month-old, taking care of four dogs, maintaining the household and getting a Master’s Degree in forensic psychology, all at the same time, while I go and act like a moron with my lifelong best friend. It’s a partnership — it has to be, in order to juggle everything. Fortunately, I’ve got a pillar, so I can go and do the show knowing that everything at home is A-OK. It’s been an interesting ride over the past few months.”

The three-time Women’s Champion explained why she’s been absent from recent WWE gatherings, blaming her busy life as a mother:

“I haven’t been able to come back here for a couple of years because I’ve been chasing our first child, Lyric — our little two-year-old who’s very excited to be a big sister. It’s been a while since I’ve been able to come back, visit everybody and enjoy the experience. Before I get back into ‘Baby Land,’ I thought this was a good window to come and say ‘hi,’ see the new generation of Divas and where it’s all headed.”

Beth and Edge’s first child – a daughter named Lyric – was born in December 2013.

Congratulations to the parents-to-be!

Jacqueline Inducted into WWE Hall of Fame
