TNA No Surrender in Review: Was the Crowd Really Chanting That?

After several weeks of all the talking behind each others back, all the backstabbing, and catfights, FINALLY it’s Velvet Sky vs Madison Rayne in a grudge match… with Angelina Love and Tara both at ringside. Instead of  having the two fight woman to woman, my suspicions about outside interference were starting to look correct.

Madison Rayne is the first to make her entrance out to the ring accompanied by Tara on the motorcycle. I’m going to go ahead and assume that TNA Management seen my request regarding Tara and Madison because when they are on the ring apron, Tara decides to smack Madison’s a** before the two kiss each other.  The beautiful theme song continues to play as Velvet Sky makes her way on to the ramp with her BFF, Angelina Love. They do the usual “Dancing With The Stars” routine before strolling down to the ring, smiling like they’re friendship has never hit a slight speed bump.  While Velvet and Angelina were on the ring apron doing their vintage booty shake on the middle rope, Tazz makes it seems like Angelina has a bomb implanted inside of her boot. Wiring device? Really Tazz??

The match has finally started and it hasn’t even been a full 10 seconds before Tara takes it upon herself to grab Velvet’s foot before throwing her hands up innocently causing the ref to get distracted with her, giving Madison the opportunity to take a cheap shot at Velvet. Madison then takes Velvet and slams her head into the turnbuckle before using her boot to start choking Velvet. At this point I’m trying to figure out if the Impact Zone is chanting what I thought they were chanting or was it just me hearing voices because of Madison’s short shorts.  After the  ref warns her about the boot to the throat, Madison takes a shot at Velvet and turns around to Angelina, striking a pose while Tara begins to fan herself.

PPV Predictions: TNA No Surrender 2010

Former Beautiful People partners, Madison Rayne and Velvet Sky, face off tonight in a huge grudge match. Which Knockout will come out on top? We weigh in…

Cryssi: I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again; this match, for all intents and purposes, should be a title match! Unfortunately, it’s not. Womp womp. I will say that I love the fact Madison versus Velvet is going to come to a head on pay-per-view. These two deserve to have a huge payoff match because they’ve both worked their asses off to make their feud come alive. Velvet is nothing but gold on the mic and in her acting segments, and because of her high level, Madison has had to pick it up. She’s done just that. The break-up of this version of the Beautiful People was really well done and I hope neither woman holds anything back come Sunday. I want to see weaves ripped out. I want to see clothes ripped off (granted they actually wear them). I want Madison and Velvet to put on one hell of a show and prove to everyone that they don’t need Tara and Angelina to carry them. My prediction to win is Velvet Sky. She needs a massive singles victory to elevate her as a competitor tonight she gets just that.

David: Tonight at No Surrender, TNA presents a show with extreme stipulations and championship matches. Oh, and don’t forget, there will also be a special ‘grudge match’ between Madison Rayne and her former BP buddy Velvet Sky. A ‘grudge match’, huh? Sounds great. I’m pretty sure that’s Latin for ‘nothing important will happen tonight’. Madison wants to get her hands on Velvet so she can eventually get her hands on Angelina’s title. Tara came back to help her even the odds against the BP. (OH, so Tara WAS the mystery biker?!) Not a bad subplot except I thought Tara lost her career a few months ago. Oh well. I think Velvet wins Sunday night, but the real action is when the Knockouts Title is eventually on the line, or when we get a tag team ‘grudge match’ that shows if Tara’s allegiance is for real.

Jennifer: Although I should’ve seen this coming, the announcement of this grudge match on last Thursday’s Impact caught me off guard. The buildup has been good and considering we just saw the other obvious option for a match (the original Beautiful People vs. Madison & Tara), I’m glad at least one women’s match is on the PPV. My money’s on Velvet due to her and Angelina losing last Thursday, plus I think people are ready to see Madison get her ass handed to her by her other former partner.

Results & Pictures from RCW Last Night (Alissa Flash vs Mercedes Martinez)

Diva Dirt reader, Brandon, sent in the following report and pictures from last night’s RCW event in San Antonio, which was headlined by Alissa Flash vs Mercedes Martinez for the RCW Championship:

Last night’s RCW show was amazingly good. It had everything you want out of professional wrestling – straight-up pure wrestling and enjoyable segments. All the action was great, but the one thing that stood out to me more about last night’s event was the main reason I went to the show in the first place – Alissa Flash (AKA Cheerleader Melissa) vs. Mercedes Martinez!

When I found out that Mercedes is coming to RCW in my hometown, I was marking out! Like that got me sold to actually going to this event. I felt disappointed not going when Alissa Flash became RCW Champion, the first female to win the company’s top prize, showing that Alissa ain’t one to play around with, female or not. She is, pound for pound, one of the greatest women wrestlers in, not just the US, but in the world. The same can be said for Mercedes Martinez, another pound for pound athlete, and one of the women that put SHIMMER on the map with her fued with Sara Del Rey, along with Melissa’s fued with Mschif. And with these two in the same ring together, mono-on-mono, I know will expect some great stuff between the two. Now, enough praising the two, and let’s get to the action.

Mr. Glamazon’s Hitting the Ropes (Issue #15) – Miss Elizabeth Tribute

Recently I was having a bad day at work so I needed something to lift my spirits.  When I got home the family was out on a play date, so I went downstairs, threw on my blue Glamasuit, and watched a replay of Extreme Rules 2010.  As always, Beth’s title victory did the trick.  I perked right back up.

Not a day goes by that I don’t think back to April 25, 2010, Baltimore, MD, when my beloved Glamazon pinned Michelle McCool to capture the WWE women’s championship.   I have such great memories of that night.  Sitting in the front row.  Cheering like a little kid.  Jumping around as the ref counted three.  I’ve watched the match 12,809 times and I enjoy it every time.  To me the match is perfect.  (I’d say it was “flawless” but, you know, I don’t want to have to pay royalties…).

But I finally admitted something to myself the other night.  As much as I treasure the match, it wasn’t “perfect”.  I have been so in love with the result that I overlooked 2 aspects of the match that sadly affect its historical impact.  First of all, the match was booked as an “Extreme Makeover” match.  WTF?!?  Were the rules ever fully explained?  Two premier workers shouldn’t decide the women’s title by using ironing boards and make-up tables.  Too “gimmicky”.  Secondly, the match was on the Extreme Rules PPV, a show people will ultimately forget (seriously, name 3 matches without heading to Wikipedia).  This wasn’t exactly WrestleMania.  So even though I was overwhelmed with joy and excitement that night, I have to finally admit the match wasn’t perfect.

Which got me thinking…

Has there ever been a perfect match?

Obviously this is a very subjective topic.  I think it would be very, very hard to get two people to agree on the definition of “perfection”.  So how would I define the “perfect match”?  Glad you asked…

SmackDown Redux (September 3rd, 2010): Welcome to ‘The Layla Show’

After weeks of little to no direction for the SmackDown Divas, we finally have a storyline — albeit an interpromotional one — with Lay-Cool set to challenge Melina at Night of Champions to unify the Divas and Women’s Championships. If the objective for tonight’s SmackDown segment was to push that match, well, they did a good job. If the objective was for Layla’s commentary to overshadow and seem more important than the match in the ring, well, they also accomplished that too.

Watch below:

In a video that is 5 minutes long, you actually have to skip to the 2 minute mark for the match between Kelly Kelly and Michelle McCool to begin. 3 minutes for the match? Don’t expect a mat classic. However, as I said above, it looks like the match itself is second to the commentary so it’s not as though we’re expecting an in-ring spectacular.

As the bell rings, Kelly begins stomping at Michelle and then hitting a few forearms but before we can even see 10 seconds of action, the camera cuts to Layla at ringside. Granted, being a big fan of Layla’s mic work, I appreciate the opportunity to see her ramble endlessly but come on, there’s a match in the ring!
