ROH Recap (March 1, 2010): Beware of The Death Rey

After a few months of absence, women’s wrestling as made it’s return to Ring of Honor! This week’s match pitted former SHIMMER Champion Sara Del Rey against current SHIMMER Tag Team Champion Portia Perez. Watch below as these two SHIMMER mainstays bring in March with a bang:

Out first is Portia, who is playing the babyface role in this match. At first, the image of Portia slapping fives with the fans kind of rubbed me the wrong way. I mean, she is one of the most hated heels in SHIMMER after all. Even though Del Rey is the bigger heel in this instance, I would have liked Perez to still keep her heel persona, if only to keep some consistency between SHIMMER and ROH.

Sara Del Rey hits the ring next accompanied by… um… well, I don’t really who he is to be honest. I’m sure his name was mentioned a time or two, but let’s be honest: We’re not watching this match for him, are we? The ladies adhere to ROH’s Code of Honor and shake hands, but as soon as the bell sounds Del Rey goes on the attack, forcing her smaller opponent into the corner and taking her to the mat with forearm strikes and a few stomps for good measure. Referee Bryce Remsburg tries to pull Del Rey off of the pint-sized Portia, but Sara is having none of that.

While Del Rey is busy with the ref, Portia takes the opportunity to roll Sara up with a schoolboy for a two count. Portia tries to get of the offensive but is laid out by another vicious forearm. Del Rey tries for a wheelbarrow but Perez reverses it for another near fall and pays for it with a kick to the head. Sara keeps on her opponent, pulling her up by the hair and tying her up in the ropes. Del Rey proceeds to level Portia with some nasty (in a good way) kicks to the chest folowed by a snap suplex for a two count.

ROH Recap: What You Might Have Missed

As I’m sure you all know, we recently started covering Ring of Honor here at Diva Dirt. ROH, the big brother of all-female promotion SHIMMER, has been featuring SHIMMER matches on their cable show as of late. We were a little late to jump on the bandwagon, so needless to say we missed a few matches. Oops. But fear not, SHIMMER fans! I’ve rounded up all the ROH/SHIMMER action that we haven’t covered here yet. Watch below as Daizee Haze takes on Sara Del Rey:

The Weekly Roundup (May 30 – June 05, 2009) – A Week in Television

weeklyroundup

Welcome to Diva Dirt’s new feature – The Weekly Roundup, a look at the week in television! From Raw, SmackDown, ECW and TNA too, we look back at the week’s highs and lows as well as giving you the opportunity to catch up on what you’ve missed!

MAY 30th – JUNE 5th, 2009

This week has seen some solid TV efforts from WWE, an okay week for TNA and the emergence of women’s wrestling on ROH. This week saw the first time in history that Diva Dirt has covered ROH on HDNet & we’re very happy that we did…

Best Bet: My highlight of the week came from ROH, as it incorporated sister promotion, SHIMMER into it’s broadcast. I have to be honest and say I haven’t really seen much of SHIMMER or any of these girls before but I was thoroughly impressed by the triple threat match on HDNet last Saturday. If you haven’t yet seen it, check it out after the cut – it’s well worth it. I hope ROH does more “SHIMMER Lite” segments in future. (PS: I’m already preferring ROH’s production style to TNA’s rollercoaster sickness style on Impact).

Honourable Mention: Like last week, SmackDown gives us our honourable mention of the week with an outstanding six Divas tag team match.

Low Point: I felt this week’s Impact didn’t see a strong enough followup to last week’s fantastic debut of the former Victoria. Not only has she been renamed ‘Tara’, but she’s also stuck in a one minute segment from a two hour broadcast. Not a good followup at all.

SHIMMER Spotlight: Sara Del Rey

saradelray

You know what time it is people! Really? You don’t? Well I’ll clue you in. It’s time your weekly dose of SHIMMER goodness. Every weekend, I’ll be bringing you profiles on the hard hitting ladies of SHIMMER. Everyone from the major players like MsChif to the up and coming rookies like Ashley Lane and Portia Perez. So lets get to the good stuff, guys.

Name: Sara Del Rey

Aliases: “Death Rey”

Age: 28

Entrance Theme: “The Final Countdown” by Europe

Finisher(s):Royal Butterfly(Standing Butterfly lock released into a suplex); Bridging German suplex

Associates: Larry Sweeney; Allison Danger; Chris Hero

Accomplishments: SHIMMER Champion (1 Time); OCW Women’s Champion (1 Time, current); CWR Women’s Champion (1 Time, current); Ranked #6 ond PWI’s Female 50 in 2008

Sara Del Rey is arguably the best pure wrestler in SHIMMER to date. Trained by greats such as Bryan Danielson and Antonio Inoki, Sara has adopted a hard hitting style all her own. She even had a little stint in OVW (very little). Believe it or not, Del Rey had to put in a lot extra hours during the beginning of her training, as wrestling didn’t come naturally to her. Go figure.

Since Volume One, Del Rey has been a mainstay of SHIMMER. She’s taken on some of the best and won on several occasions. Sarah Stock, Lacey and even Awesome Kong has tasted the “Death Rey”. Sara made history in 2007, becoming SHIMMER’s first ever champion, defeating Lacey in the SHIMMER Championship Tournament finals. She defended the title in SHIMMER before dropping it to MsChif in April 2008.

Del Rey also knows how to play well with others. She, along with Allison Danger, form Dangerous Angels. The team has competed on several volumes of SHIMMER, as well as Ring Of Honor.

Speaking of Ring Of Honor, Death Rey recently turned heel, Aligning herself with Larry Sweeney and Chris Hero to form Sweet and Sour Inc. The group even took a shot at the WWE divas. Sweeney implied he was grooming Del Rey for WWE and she replied by saying: “I’m a wrestler not a Diva” Ouch! She ended up leaving the faction after being yelled at by Sweeney, during a match against Daizee Haze.

While Sara’s style is better suited for TNA, I would rather see her in WWE. I could see having some epic match-ups against likes of Beth Phoenix and Natalya. Of course if WWE has anything to say about it, she’ll be jobbing to Maria or Candice a few months into her debut.

So what do you guys think? Does Sara fit the TNA mold or shoukd she go over to WWE and redefine what it means to be a diva? Sound off in the comments! As usual, videos after the cut, including a ACTUAL SHIMMER match! Enjoy!
