Sexy Star goes after Mariposa on this week’s Lucha Underground

[media-credit name=”Lucha Underground” align=”alignnone” width=”620″][/media-credit]

This week’s Lucha Underground further explored the blooming triangle between Catrina, Mil Muertes, and Jeremiah Crane. Elsewhere Sexy Star is confronted by a familiar enemy and rekindles a feud.

First up is a match between Mil Muertes, accompanied by the Mistress of the Macabre, and Jeremiah.

The match ends in Jeremiah’s favor after Prince Puma runs in with a kendo stick to attack Mil while the ref was distracted with Catrina. After the match, Puma beat down Mil and then bowed towards Vampiro. Being resurrected by Vampiro, Puma is now his disciple. Now that Jeremian won and Puma is after her man too, what does this mean for Catrina moving forward?

After the match a Johnny Mundo fan approaches Sexy.

He tells her that he thinks it’s awesome she was the first female Lucha Underground Champion. However, Johnny is the best so she shouldn’t feel bad for her losses. He gives her a gift with her name on that was just “laying around.” She opens it to find another spider!

Later on, She barges into Dario Cueto’s office demanding a match with Mariposa next week. Dario agrees and makes the match.

Lucha Underground airs Wednesdays on the El Rey Network. Episodes can also be purchased on iTunes.

Matt and Reby Hardy reveal gender of their baby

[media-credit name=”Photo: RebySky.com” align=”alignnone” width=”620″][/media-credit]

Tonight on TNA’s special ‘Hardy New Year’ themed episode of Impact Wrestling, Matt and Reby Hardy revealed the gender of their baby in a very unique way.

Caving in on his “broken brilliance”, ‘Broken’ Matt Hardy foresaw a vision in which a volcano eruption would reveal the gender of their baby.

When the volcano exploded, blue smoke emerged, thus revealing that the couple will welcome a second baby boy to their family in 2017!

Watch the gender reveal below:

Reby announced her pregnancy during the conclusion of TNA’s Total Nonstop Deletion episode of Impact. She gave birth to the couple’s first son “King Maxel” in 2015.

The proud parents took to Twitter to share how delightful they are in knowing that the next generation of a Hardy Tag Team are on their way:

Diva Dirt send well wishes to Reby, Matt and big brother to be Maxel!

Pollyanna quits professional wrestling

[media-credit name=”Twitter:@GothicLoly” align=”alignnone” width=”620″][/media-credit]

UK wrestler Pollyanna has officially parted ways with the world of professional wrestling.

The Progress star took to Twitter to announce her departure. She wrote:

The London born athlete was trained by wrestling veterans Emi Sakura and Jimmy Havoc, and made her name known on the independent scene throughout England.

Pollyanna’s career started in 2010, where she debuted in Extreme World Wrestling in a losing effort against Rhia O’Reilly. The young talent quickly transcended through the independent scene by working for companies such as Pro Wrestling Eve, IPW:UK, and Progress Wrestling.

Throughout her career she has held the IPW:UK Women’s champion, as well as the Plex Wrestling Women’s Championship, a title that she has been the current holder of for 480 days.

And though it may have felt like it was just about to lift off, she certainly has a lot to be proud of. From igniting the new Progress women’s division through a phenomenal feud with Jinny, to being the inaugural Plex Wrestling Women’s champion, there are definitely some great moments to look back on.

Diva Dirt wishes Pollyanna the best of luck with her future endeavours, and we hope to see her return to the world of professional wrestling one day.

NXT Redux (December 28, 2016): Welcome to the land of the rising sun

[media-credit name=”WWE” align=”alignnone” width=”620″][/media-credit]

Welcome to this week’s NXT review. I hope everyone is enjoying their holiday and is ready to kiss this year goodbye! This week we witness footage from NXT’s tour of Japan, Asuka‘s homecoming!

Before we get to that though, Peyton Royce and Billie Kay have some unfinished business with Liv Morgan and Aliyah.

As Liv and Aliyah make their entrances commentary starts to build a story around their blooming friendship, this is what we’ve been looking for! Commentary does a great job here building up a story between the four before the women tie up. Billie and Liv go back and forth, trading a succession of rolling pins!

Aliyah gets tagged in shortly after and her and Liv work together in tandem offense. Aliyah works Billie over in a rest hold before getting to her feet to tag in Peyton. Peyton comes in full force and clubs Aliyah several times. They square off, trading blows. Aliyah then works over Peyton’s arm.

A back breaker by Peyton takes Aliyah down and Billie comes in. They tag each other in and out, dominating Aliyah in their corner. Peyton and Aliyah sqaure off again, trading blows until Peyton makes her way back to Billie. She tags Billie in and again the Aussies work together, now targeting Aliyah’s arms. Billie holds Aliyah in a submission where she claws at Aliyah’s face. Billie chokes her and bends her backwards. Aliyah escapes but still gets struck several times by Billie.

Peyton gets tagged in again and the Iconic Duo takes Aliyah down. Aliyah struggles to get to Liv. After a few strikes by Aliyah, Peyton is able to force Aliyah back into her corner where she tags Billie in and they work her over again. After a stalling vertical suplex Peyton gets tagged in again and stomps a mudhole in Aliyah.

Peyton strangles Aliyah in the middle of the ring before tossing her head around. As Aliyah tries to get out of the hold, Peyton drives her down with her knees. Aliyah struggles to get to her feet and tag Liv in but now she’s attacked by Billie who performs a beautiful modified suplex.

Billie headbutts Aliyah and then strikes Liv off the apron. Billie tags in Peyton again and they continue flattening Aliyah. While they hoist Aliyah up into another vertial suplex, she escapes and tags in Liv. Liv rushes in and takes down Peyton with a cross body block and Billie goes down from a double clothes line into a bulldog. With the crowd on her side she pushes down Billie with an STO. Peyton breaks up the pin and then Aliyah rushes at her.

Peyton tags back in where she hits Liv’s face into Billie’s knee for the win!

Next up Asuka defends her title against the returning Nia Jax.

The crowd welcomes Asuka back joyously. Right off the bat it already becomes a test of speed vs strength. Asuka tries to strategically strike her while Nia starts manhandling the champion. A David vs Golitah battle ensues, showing shades of their previous bout in June. Asuka tries an Octupus hold but it doesn’t phase Nia one bit.

Nia tries a vertical suplex on Asuka but Asuka escapes. Asuka strikes her but Nia plants her down roughly with a spine buster. Nia chokes Asuka in the ropes and taunts her. Nia continues to weaken Asuka. Asuka mounts a comeback with strikes but gets shut down again. Asuka tries to outstrike her but Nia’s power overcomes her again.

Nia goes for rest holds and mat slams. They continue to trade blows but a sidewalk slam grounds Asuka again. Asuka tries to knock down Nia with a succession of quick strikes but one headbutt by Nia takes Asuka down. Nia tries various submissions again before Asuka can counter it with a headscissor-like reversal into a knee bar.

Nia stands up out of it but eats a few more kicks and strikes from Asuka. Nia continues to throw around Asuka before Asuka sends Nia outside the ring. Nia climbs back on the apron but a hip attack by Asuka sends her crashing back outside the ring. Nia tosses Asuka into the ring apron. Nia collects herself in the ring. She leg drops Asuka and Asuka rolls out of the ring again. They fight briefly with Nia laying out Asuka again outside the ring. She stands by while the ref counts.

Asuka gets back into the ring and strikes Nia several times stiffly. Nia tries a powerbomb but Asuka escapes. Asuka kicks Nia in the face though and then suddenly transitions Nia into an arm bar out of nowhere! Nia dead lifts her but is still caught in Asuka’s submission. Nia then hoists Asuka up and power bombs her.

Asuka strikes and kicks Nia several more times before performing an impressive suplex on her! Nia lets out a primal scream before getting kicked hard in the face. Asuka retains the championship.

After the match NXT hypes a triple threat for next week:

Thoughts: Let me start off by saying, I saw the comments last week criticizing my overall negative demeanor lately. I think we know the difference between a review and a news story, one is opinion, the other is fact. I will not normalize or praise bad booking or lack of story telling. NXT is developmental and it should be laying a foundation for these women to practice, learn, and work with each other to establish themselves as worthy competitors for the main roster programming.

Instead what NXT has done lately, and what this episode illustrates a little bit even though I’ll get to my feelings on that after this (which is positive!), is focus on having matches for the sake of having them without any strong narratives to back them up. The golden era of NXT worked because we saw Paige, Summer Rae, the Four Horsewomen, Carmella, Alexa Bliss, Emma, Dana Brooke, Nia Jax to an extent, grow, work against each other, have highs and lows, reach peaks and valleys, pioneer women in the main event, organically introduce meaningful character arcs, and allow women a platform to challenge preconceived notions of what a women’s wrestler could do in the WWE.

We’re now fighting for time for the women again. We should be demanding much more for them. I’m also always supportive of these women despite any criticisms I may have of them, I want them to succeed. I want Liv to have a deeper character, I want to root for her, for Ember Moon. I want to know more about them and be captured fully by their programs that pit them against their foes while they fight for justice, or just a place at the table. It’s booking and creative where this problem lies. The women can only do so much to turn “chicken shit into chicken salad.” It’s frustrating, this is where I come from.

However, last night’s broadcast showed subtle shades of the NXT I’ve been looking for! Some of the more exciting and experimental bits from house shows really worked here on TV. Billie and Liv’s rolling pin combination looked so smooth and was quite entertaining. As a fan of NJPW, I also really like the crowd reactions in Japan too. The crowds in Japan are quiet but very appreciative. It’s a unique atmosphere.

Billie working opposite Liv is helping Liv carve out her skills. Liv is so young and she has so much more time to grow, I may not connect with her character now but she still has a long way to develop deeper traits. Time is on her side.

The same can be said about Aliyah. She already has a strong offense and now she’s experimenting with getting the crowd on her side. Next she should work on her character. I still don’t know what she’s all about but I’m already rooting for her based on her mat performance. She has experience from working on the indies in her teens and it shows. Pairing her up with Liv should benefit the both of them moving forward.

Billie and Peyton worked great together here. I’d like to see more from both of them in single competition but they work the best as a team. Moving forward I want to see them continue to decimate the competition together. I want to see them become strong enough where their solo weaknesses don’t show at all, where a face has to do something special to overcome them. They are the big heels of the division and they should become more ruthless and hungry. I think working opposite along developing talent has lead them to tone down their moves a little bit. But, with practice and time, Billie and Peyton should feel more comfortable dolling out more creative and deadly offense.

I’m very happy they got the win here. They need to continue to show up the rest of the division while NXT crafts some more paths to move the women forward.

Onto our women’s title match. I got choked up seeing Asuka’s hometown welcoming her back, it was very heartwarming. Asuka’s undefeated streak is a bit worn out at this point but she is the “big gun,” so to speak. She’s very special and her country celebrating that is a sweet reminder of how unusual she is. I may not like that they only trot her out for big events and separate her from the developing division but when the other girls get to work against her as the final boss battle, it’s a spectacle worth watching every time.

I liked the various call backs to their TakeOver match this past year though with the vertical suplex and other maneuvers. However, I was a little puzzled by Nia just letting Asuka possibly get counted out? Uh, that’s not how you win the championship. But, Nia’s strong showing towards the end of the match showed progress.

Asuka’s suplex to Nia was such a sight to behold too! Asuka continues to dazzle with her prowess. Though the ending mirrored their last battle, it wasn’t completely deflating, which has been a complaint about the ending of Asuka’s matches in the past. That’s definitely an improvement. Nia working opposite Asuka continues to help her gain an edge and smooth out her skills.

And I’m always entertained by Nia ragdolling Asuka but I need to see a little bit more from her. In my opinion Nia should still be working on her skills in NXT. She should add more power moves to cement her hoss status. Throwing girls around almost always works but, she just needs to enhance her strength abilities just a pinch more. Some women who have powerful move sets are Nikki Bella and Charlotte and Nia should be integrating more power bombs, dead lifts, suplexes, and a variety of slams into her repertoire too. She is a monster and will look more powerful if she can match current or surpass powerful girls on the main roster.

Next week we’re treated to another international showing as NXT comes from Australia. The advertised triple threat should be a good one and, if anything, works to rebuild the division’s in ring strength. Maybe this will also open up NXT’s willingness to experiment more on television? Next, we just need more character and story development to put these girls further on the map.

What did you think of this week’s NXT? Sound off in the comments below.

SmackDown Redux (December 27th, 2016): Mind your business

[media-credit name=”WWE/Twitter:@totaldivaseps” align=”alignnone” width=”540″][/media-credit]

It’s the final edition of SmackDown Live of the year, so what better way to go out with a bang than to have a Women’s title match? And a surprise interference, of course!

Between the title match, surprise appearance, and the backstage controversy, it’s a big one for the ladies of Team Blue, and it looks like things aren’t gonna settle down for a while…

Towards the beginning of the show, Dasha Fuentes attempted to interview The Miz about last week’s scenario. And after Maryse confronted Funetes – with not a single word of exchange between them – the Intercontinental champion demanded to speak with the woman that slapped him, Renee Young.

Later on in the show, Renee Young is seen outside of The Miz’s door, ready to interview him. Maryse is the first one out of the door and ensures that if Young is to touch her husband again, she will take matters into her own hands. The Miz then interrupts and takes ahold of the situation. He intimidatingly asks Renee if she’s going to ask him a question – such as the topic of him performing a Skullcrushing Finale on her boyfriend Dean Ambrose. After the man kicks out the security for being in “his shot”, Young then responds by unenthusiastically asking him how he is going to follow up his “resurgence” year in 2017. He proudly boasts about his year, but is soon attacked by one Dean Ambrose – whom appears to be dressed as a security guard. Ambrose then fends off the other guards that try to stop him and then tells the receiving end of his intercom that the area is “all clear”, and then walks away with a smug smile.

We soon see Dasha catching up with James Ellsworth in an attempt to understand his feelings regarding his title shot loss to AJ Styles. However, just like last week, Carmella interrupts the interview as she feels that Dasha is anchoring Ellsworth’s insecurities with her questions. The Princess of Staten Island says that she finds the man “uniquely attractive” and whisks him away with her. Interesting.

Our SmackDown Women’s title match soon goes ahead and it’s a tough one. Becky Lynch leads the majority of the beginning with her roll-ups and charismatic move-set. And though Alexa Bliss does insert her own offense, it is Lynch that leads the match for a little while longer. We then get to a point in which it seems that Bliss will insert a finisher and take home the win, but this is put to a halt as some music plays and someone dressed just like the Luchadora from last week runs to ringside. Whilst the referee is looking away, the Luchadora takes off part of the middle turnbuckle and patiently waits to make their move.

Back in the ring, Lynch attacks Alexa’s arm with the Dis-Arm-Her but the champion manages to get to the ropes. And whilst Bliss is showing the referee her “injured” body part, the Luchadora takes ahold of the moment and bashes Lynch’s head into the exposed part of the turnbuckle. Alexa then turns this distraction into a DDT and inserts a pinfall for the victory.

Dasha shows up to ask Bliss for her thoughts on the Luchadora’s actions, and who she may think is behind the mask. An unbothered champion declares that it’s probably Sasha Banks, or even Nia Jax, and then walks off with her title. It may be possible that Bliss could not care less. More on this later.

Backstage, Nikki Bella is confronted by Fuentes to discuss Natalya’s reveal from last week. Bella says that regardless of Neidhart’s words, she’s still proud of her two successful reality shows and is unashamedly in love with the “man of her dreams”, John Cena. She also says that she got her success through her determination, and not through her looks. And before she leaves, she states that she intends to tell Natalya everything she has to say, to her face.

Thoughts: If there’s a perfect way to end the year, this is it! Between the chemistry and storytelling of the title match to the use of the backstage correspondents, this is a fantastic episode for the women of Team Blue! We’re definitely spoiled this week as the women are heavily involved in good portions of the show.

The angle with Renee, Maryse and their respective men is going fantastically. What I love about it is that although the feud is between The Miz and Ambrose, the involvement of the women doesn’t feel like a valet versus valet kind of gig. Instead, Young despises the Miz for his treatment of her, and doesn’t even discuss his unfair attack on Ambrose. Young saw the Miz bully her boyfriend multiple times, yet only got involved because he ended up picking on her as well – and I appreciate that ever so much. Young is clearly a grown woman that can fight her own battles (whilst her boyfriend is a grown man that can do the same), so when the Miz messes with her, she took it into her own hands and refused to respect the instigator for that reason.

We also saw that Maryse wanted to get involved too. And this could be an interesting angle. Though Young has shown no signs of being an in-ring competitor, could we see the two battle it out one day? The tension between them is definitely something I’d like to see resolved in the ring, so maybe it’ll happen…? Or it could be promo for ‘Total Divas’.

The Nikki Bella segment is also a pretty interesting one. Though it’s really short, and it doesn’t really have a lot of substance, it’s a good way to continue the feud between her and Natalya. Seeing Nikki actually respond is what we’ve needed for a while. Instead of seeing Carmella and Natalya being the only ones that get a say, Bella finally got to give her two cents. I love the empowering Nikki, and this segment pretty much embodied that. Though, the only thing I’d like to change would be for Bella to have more edge, and to show a similar level of sass that her record breaking title reign had.

Now onto the title match. The match itself was an incredible set of wrestling. Both women really proved their extensive levels of chemistry and sold their story wonderfully. Again, it’s the story of good versus evil and either women situated themselves in the correct role perfectly. And on top of the fantastic work from both of the women, the ending was an unexpected dose of good storytelling too.

Yes, we have another “who attacked me!?” story, so I guess you could say it’s similar. But it also doesn’t seem to be a carbon copy. With this new Luchadora character, we can see tons of potential for different stories to be told. It may be a woman that attacked another woman – much like the Bella/Neidhart situation – but it can be so much more.

Lynch has had a horrible end to a year that was supposed to be hers. With the loss of her title and the constant cheap shots from behind, there really is a lot of fuel behind this Lass Kicker to go all out. And with this unknown “Luchadora” now messing with her also, could we see a heated rivalry in her future? Maybe even a heel turn?

The Luchadora could also very much be a new member of Team Blue? Could Deonna Purrazzo be on the hunt for Lynch? Maybe Tamina, Eva Marie or Naomi could have sent someone out to attack Lynch in a disguise so nobody would expect them? There are countless ways that this could go, and I love it. Lynch works best when she is belittled and misunderstood, and seeing her out of the title picture will be refreshing. So this could be an interesting story…

What do you think of this episode? Did we leave the year on a good note? Who should be the next opponent for Bliss? Who attacked Becky? How are you finding Nikki and Natalya’s storyline? Will Renee and Maryse fight it out? Let us know your views in the comments below!

RAW Redux (December 27th, 2016): Boxing Day Blues for Bayley

287

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from the Diva-Dirt Team! While we all pigged out and took a break, there was no rest for our WWE RAW Superstars as they took to the infamous Chicago crowds for Boxing Day! With last week setting a new direction for the division, lets see how things progress this week.

Bayley is seen backstage, spreading her holiday cheer to R-Truth and Goldust. She gives Truth a signature hug, but then presents Goldust with a special Bayley bear. Wearing his Dad, Dusty Rhodes’ signature black and yellow polka dot with matching headband, Bayley says that she wouldn’t be #1 contender and where she is now if it wasn’t for him. The crowd chants ‘Dusty!’ and they share a hug Goldust is clearly touched… until Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson rip the bear’s head off!

Next, the commentary team recap Nia Jax tossing Sasha Banks across the ring. Nia’s out next and ready to take out her next victim.

Charley Caruso catches up with this week’s local competitor, Scarlett Bordeaux! Hailing from Chicago herself and sporting a ‘Legit Boss’ t-shirt, she states that Sasha Banks is who inspired her to get in the ring and she wishes she could be here. Unfortunately, I don’t know if Nia’s music was too loud or if Charley’s mic wasn’t connected to the system, because the crowd completely didn’t hear any of that.

In typical jobber squash fashion, Nia dominates Scarlett. I don’t even think she hit any offence in the whole match. There’s a couple ‘We Want Sasha!’ chants, but Nia easily disposes of Scarlett with a running hip thrust in the corner and finally a Samoan Drop. After the quick pinfall, she grabs the microphone and tells her, ‘Next time, choose a better role model!’ before she hits a leg drop on her already fallen victim.

No breaks for the women, as Bayley is on her way to the ring next!

Now did the UK broadcast cut something off? Or was this next bit intentional? When we come back from the break, Charlotte is seen backstage saying ‘Thank You’ and shaking Stephanie McMahon’s hand… either way, this is addressed in the next segment, but how interesting to see the Billion Dollar Princess interacting with the Genetically Superior Queen!

Bayley is in the ring and take to the mic! She reminds the crowd that she’s pinned Charlotte for the third time in a row, which should make her the new #1 Contender for the RAW Women’s Championship. Party interrupted, when the Women’s Champion herself, Charlotte, makes her way down to the ring. She repeats last week’s sloppy pinfall and shows how her shoulder wasn’t fully pinned down.

Charlotte reveals that she’s pulled some strings with her lawyer and Stephanie McMahon to expunge the referee’s decision last week – meaning Bayley’s pinfall no longer counts! She continues to berate Bayley in the ring, but offers her yet another opportunity to take her on one on one… However, Charlotte reveals that her agreement allowed her a fair referee to call things down the line… that person being Charlotte’s protege, Dana Brooke!

Back from the break and Dana asks for the bell to the ring. Immediately at the start of the match, Charlotte goes overboard with the chops in the corner, definitely exceeding the 5 count. Bayley reverses and tries to get her offence in, but Dana steps in at the 2 count and pulls Bayley away to defend her Mentor. However, this annoys Bayley and she slams our ‘official’ with a Bayley-to-belly!

Dana rolls out of the ring, but the match continues as another referee runs to the ring. We don’t really see anything we’ve not seen from their other 3 encounters. The finish sees Bayley counter a Figure 8 and hit a Bayley-to-belly to Charlotte, but just as she’s about to win, Dana Brooke pulls the referee out of the ring and she shouts “I’M THE REF!”.

Bayley chases Dana around the ring, but Charlotte takes advantage of the distraction. She hits a roll up, uses her ropes for leverage and Dana hits an extremely quick count. Looks like that #1 Contender dream is dashed by the dirty tactics of Charlotte and Dana Brooke!

Finally, we get another Emmalina promo… this time she puts on this weird porno voice, telling us that we’re so good for waiting all this time and that this will be worth the wait… well hurry Emma boo, cos we’re already bored. It’s gonna be Summer by the time you debut at this rate.

Thoughts: This week is probably the first time when I’ve kind of switched off from Charlotte’s mic work. Don’t get me wrong, she’s great on the mic, but her promos are getting REALLY ‘samey’ now. Much like Sasha was all about ‘childhood dream’ and ‘women’s evolution’ throughout Summer 2016; Charlotte’s promos against Bayley have just been full of Laycool-esque bland insults.

The feud just seems to be missing something. We all know that next week, Mick Foley will be giving Bayley another chance, but I’m already going to get bored of these Bayley VS Charlotte/Dana combinations – much like we did with Sasha. The brand split is really exposing the holes in the RAW division. It’s such a shame that Alicia has no credibility anymore, Summer is injured, Paige is in her mess and Emma is too busy taking photos somewhere. There is so much potential here, but we’re stuck in very predictable 2 horse races…

Also, I peaked the comments last week and I know some of you lot were aggy that I mentioned how there was no point in Sasha VS Nia without the title – so let me address that: Sasha Banks came up as the loser in a year long feud… she was the face… she should have got that John Cena/Trish Stratus treatment… but she didn’t. Nia Jax is a NEW powerhouse… she hasn’t had a major victory, she is going to be a monster heel for a long time so she needs a monster victory. If you connect those dots, you will see that Sasha Banks will not be coming out of top of this feud. It’s either kill the credibility of one of their top stars or kill the credibility of their first proper monster in this ‘New Era’.

If Sasha had the title and lost in this feud, it almost protects Sasha’s loss, as everyone would be focused on the title direction. Sasha losing now… just makes her a loser. Sure she puts over Nia, but in the long run she got destroyed by Charlotte, lost her title and then gets destroyed by Nia Jax.

Either way, I may be proven wrong, but I’m really needing Nia to do SOMETHING NEW. I feel like I say this every week. She’ll get stiffer, be a proper monster, but then just hit the same offence. A scoop slam? Hang someone in the Tree of Woe and then a running rip thrust? A powerbomb? A torture rack submission? A weapon shot? PLEASE!

Are you more interested in Sasha/Nia or Bayley/Charlotte? Are you still interested in Emma? What did you get for Christmas? Let me know in the comments!

Thea Trinidad praises Asuka

26

[media-credit name=”TNA” align=”alignnone” width=”620″][/media-credit]

Former TNA Knockout and recent NXT local competitor Thea Trinidad praised Asuka during a recent interview on the Pancakes and Powerslams Show. In addition to relaying her experience facing her in NXT, she also recounted how she met Austin Aries and more.

Highlights of the interview are below:

On facing Asuka: “Up until I was standing in the ring with the cameras on, that’s when I started to believe the gravity of the situation. I was surprised that I wasn’t very nervous, because I think it didn’t click yet. And then as soon as I got there, it was like, nervous. Because I love Asuka. Her work is amazing. It was such an honor to be in the ring with her, and she’s an incredible person, so it was like a home vibe, because I had Sarita (Sarah Stock) there as the producer, I had Austin Aries there with me, and then Terry Taylor, who actually was the one who hired me in TNA. It just felt like a good family vibe. I felt like I was supposed to be there. It was amazing.”

On her relationship with Aries: “We had a talent meeting [in TNA]. I’ll never forget this because I wanted to punch him in the face, but we were having a talent meeting and I was talking to Bubba [Ray] Dudley. I was finishing my last sentence, and right when the meeting was starting, I hear somebody shush from behind me. And he was like, ‘shhhh.’ And I was like, ‘Who the [heck] is shushing me?!’ I was like, what? I don’t know what it is. You can tell me like, hey, settle down. But when you shush me? For some reason that’s like [shut up] in my ears. So, right away, I turned around with this anger, and I was like [to Austin], ‘Who the [heck] are you to be shushing me?!’ And he’s like, ‘Oh. I’m just kidding. The meeting is about to start and I was just messing with you.’ And I was like, okay, okay. Whatever. I’ll mess with him later. And then, he had a really great match… and we just started talking after that, and everything just kinda happened. But it all started from a shush.”

Thea also goes on to credit Tommy Dreamer for giving her a break in the business, and says Rey Mysterio and Lita are her inspirations.

According to Show Buzz Daily, the sixth episode of Total Divas, titled “Too Many Cooks”, drew in a viewing audience of 705,000 viewers – the highest rating of this season so far.

This is up 149,000 viewers than last week’s rating of 556,000 viewers.

The episode was the 12th most watched show on cable last night, up from last week’s number 19 ranking.

The big increase in viewership comes in light of Total Divas’ new timeslot of 9 PM ET instead of their previous timeslot of 8 PM ET.

Dana Brooke will compete in the 2017 Arnold Sports Festival

34

[media-credit name=”WWE” align=”alignnone” width=”620″][/media-credit]

Dana Brooke looks to add more body building accolades to her resume as The Arnold announced that she will be participating in the Fitness International competition at The 2017 Arnold Sports Festival.

Brooke, going under her real name Ashley Sebera, will be competing in the event on Friday, March 3rd in Columbus, Ohio.

Brooke earned her International Federation of BodyBuilding & Fitness pro card in 2012 and won several National Physique Committee championships before signing with WWE. She placed 12th at the 2013 European Arnold Classic and placed 13th at the 2015 Arnold Sports Festival.

According to WrestleChat.net, the official Arnold Sports Twitter account noted that they do not have WWE/NXT on the schedule at this time though. WWE has had a presence at The Arnold for a several years and after Triple H appeared with WWE Hall of Famer Arnold Schwarzenegger earlier this year for a Q&A, it was reported that WWE would continue to work the festival. This year’s “WWE Experience” at The Arnold was considered to be a success.

Diva Dirt wishes Dana good luck!

NXT Redux (December 21, 2016): Billie Kay and Peyton Royce call out Asuka

122

[media-credit name=”WWE” align=”alignnone” width=”620″][/media-credit]

Welcome to this week’s NXT review! It’s been slow here rebuilding the women’s division. But, Billie Kay and Peyton Royce rise to the top again as they poise themselves on Asuka‘s tail.

Before they can look to dethroning the champion, Daria Berenato stands in their way. She’s out for some revenge after taking a loss several weeks ago to Ember Moon and her partners Liv Morgan and Aliyah

Right off the bat Daria looks to ground Billie in a wrestling hold but Billie escapes. Daria hits and kicks her down as Billie crawls over to Peyton and the two whisper to each other. Peyton grabs Daria’s leg and it’s enough to throw her off her game. Billie hoists her up for a suplex. Daria tries to make it to her feet but Billie shouts at her,”We run this place, not you!” before hitting her several times.

Two big clotheslines take Billie down. Daria knees her several times before spearing her down. Daria takes her gloves off and starts socking Billie with her fists. Peyton rolls Billie out of the ring to stop the attack. Daria goes outside and hits Peyton in order to drag Billie to the ring. Peyton, quick to her feet, makes a recovery and shoves Daria into the ring apron. She rolls her into the ring where Daria eats Billie’s boot. Billie gets the win.

After the match Billie says this is a lesson to everyone in the women’s division. They call out Asuka saying her competition is right here.

Later on an NXT interviewer stands by with Asuka.

Asuka dismisses Billie and Peyton’s threat. She says they need to be careful. Suddenly Nikki Cross creeps into the frame. She just laughs and Asuka smiles.

Thoughts: I see what they’re trying to do here but it’s not enough. Where’s the focus for the women’s division? There is barely any character or story development to be found.

What I’m hoping to see in the near future is a triple threat or fatal four way between Billie, Peyton, Nikki, and Asuka. This will throw a wrench into her reign as Asuka will have to watch out for three opponents at the same time. Nikki is also a wild card who has been the only one built up enough, alongside Sanity, to pose the biggest threat.

This booking of one on one matches with little to no context is ruining the division right now. Daria looked strong here and her character, I believe, will go very far but six minutes wasn’t enough for either of them.

Peyton and Billie are more than competent wrestlers but, I feel like they are being held back too for some reason. When both girls debuted moons ago they were pulling out flashy moves, I understand heels dialing down their move sets but, what are their move sets? I think they can do wonderful things and I’m rooting for them but, what the heck booking?!

Now that the Aussies have taken everyone out on their terms, it makes sense they’d be going after Asuka even though they called her out already a few months ago. What they all really need though is deeper interaction with each other. Where did Liv and Aliyah disappear to? Ember Moon still has no real feud or story, she’s just floating around.

It’s a big mess. Experiments they are running on house shows should translate over to the televised show now! I’ve always wondered why Finn Balor had more personality during a house show than on TV where it really counted, or why the matches they ran between Alexa Bliss and Asuka never made it to TV despite rumblings that these were good showings.

If the rumors of WWE Network subscribers not watching NXT as much as they were before are true, maybe they should take a look at why because their current formula isn’t working. It’s painful.

What is NXT waiting for?

Lucha Underground Analysis (December 21, 2016): Taking the easy way out

6

[media-credit name=”Lucha Underground” align=”alignnone” width=”620″][/media-credit]

Welcome back to the Temple, Believers! Last night we were treated to a rematch for the Lucha Underground Championship that also continued to showcase how women are breaking the mold. Sexy Star fought Johnny Mundo in a steel cage, becoming the first luchadora to compete with such a stipulation.

The intensity of their rivalry reached its boiling point as they squared off against each other. But before we get to that match we are taken to a vignette of the Super Friends, Fenix and Aerostar, as they look for Drago:

They are soon cornered by Kobra Moon who says that Drago is now hers. She sicks Pindar and Vibora on them. They all fight and her soliders lay them out.

After that confrontation,  The Mack joins Sexy backstage while she prepares for her match. She congratulates him on becoming the number one contender:

She tells him she’s proud of him. She believed he could do it and he proved everybody wrong. He said it’s a dream come true for him. He tells her it’s time for her now to beat Johnny and become the first two-time champion. He teases her and she says it’d be an honor to fight him if she wins the title back. At the end of the segment we see that big spider from last week scurry across the floor. Hmm.

Then Jeremiah Crane meets with Dario Cueto. He asks for a match against Mil Muertes and then removes a ceiling tile in the office to take something “he left there as a child.” I was just as confused as Dario was here, haha.

In the hallway, Catrina appears and he shows her a makeshift Ouija board? He tells her next week he’s got a match with “Pasquale Mendoza” that will make him wish Catrina left him for dead after the Earthquake. Then with him out of the way, he’ll have Catrina all to himself?

We then get to our main event:

Before the match Johnny shows off for a bit but Sexy plays back.

The match gets underway and Sexy fires back quickly and hard with slaps and chops. They reverse a few submissions before Sexy is able to make a scramble for the top of the cage.

Sexy would use the cage to her advantage and wasn’t afraid to get dirty with Johnny when necessary. She’d gain the upper hand several times and attempt to climb over the top, with Johnny quickly racing to knock her down.

They’d go back and forth for a bit before matching each other in a race to see who would be the victor. At one point Sexy took to the top of the cage for a flying cross body. It wasn’t enough to put Johnny away, however, and they’d continue to fight to escape the cage.

Johnny gained the victory after unmasking Sexy, which sent her cowering to the middle of the ring as she scrambled to put her mask back on. In Lucha culture it is an incredibly disrespectful act to unmask your opponent. Johnny would scurry over the cage to retain the Lucha Underground Championship.

After the match The Mack would make an appearance to lay the smack down on his cocky ass.

Thoughts: Lucha Underground continues to make history and not beat us over the head with it. Instead, they let the matches speak for themselves. Last night was another good episode of a series that keeps me on my toes constantly.

Let’s start with our main attraction. Placing Sexy and Johnny in a steel cage match was the perfect progression to up the ante of this feud. This match was much different than their previous bout which focused more on smothering Sexy while watching her slowly overcome. What made this different was the frantic pacing of trying to reach the other side of the cage. Sexy never gave up, she wouldn’t let Johnny catch her. She would use her flexibility as a strength and because so, Johnny again had to cheat to win. This doesn’t weaken Sexy’s resolve or character, this further strengthens her claim to the title and the fact that he can’t beat her clean. She still comes out looking strong from this feud.

I must also admit, Johnny’s character is really doing it for me too. Every disrespectful heel thing he does raises the bar for him. He’s been doing great work this season as an entitled prick. He’s also backs up his claims in the ring. Attempting to unmask Sexy gives him another level of heat that he might not have gotten otherwise. The person who eventually does defeat him for the title will gain a huge advantage.

I’m also still wondering who put that spider in Sexy’s locker or if it was just a random occurrence that threw her into a tizzy. The spider is still there, what does it mean?

Speaking of, The Mack is now number one contender so Johnny’s feud with Sexy is still far from over. I really appreciate how sweet The Mack and Sexy’s friendship is and how it has stayed platonic. A non-sexualized friendship between the two competitors is almost rare in televised wrestling. They respect each other and have each other’s backs, that’s something I think could be further explored on deep friendly terms. Males can have mentors and partnerships with each other, why not male/female friendships or general female friendships? Which is actually something we haven’t explored fully in the temple. Hmmm.

The dynamic is anything but friendly for the reptile tribe though. Kobra Moon commands her soldiers and does her bidding alongside them. She looks wonderful in her role and I’m eager to see how she fits into the entire mythology of the temple. I also absolutely love the backstage fights. It adds such amazing depth to this world. It’s so engrossing and effective.

And what a puppet master Catrina continues to be. She’s the real boss here. Any time she’s on screen there’s such purpose in her interactions. Where does Jeremiah fit into her and this world? How old is he really? (props to Dario for always being on top of his acting game in this segment too.)

Catrina is part of the ancients so, what exactly is Jeremiah? Ivelisse is going to be livid when she finds all of this out too. I’m hoping we get some action from her towards the end of the series. Wow, it’s going to get really fascinating to see where this goes.

What did you think of last night’s Lucha Underground? What do you think Kobra Moon’s ultimate goal is? What is Catrina really thinking? Sound off in the comments below.

Johnny Mundo gets the best of Sexy Star, retains the Lucha Underground Championship

[media-credit name=”Lucha Underground” align=”alignnone” width=”620″][/media-credit]

Tonight on Lucha Underground Sexy Star squared off against Johnny Mundo in a rematch for the Lucha Underground Championship. Surrounded by a steel cage, Sexy became the first woman in the Temple to participate in a match with such a stipulation.

Sexy would use the cage to her advantage and wasn’t afraid to get dirty with Johnny.

Additionally, at the top of the show The Battle of the Bulls Tournament would solidify a winner in The Mack who went up against Jeremiah Crane, Cage, and PJ Black.

Johnny will now defend his title against Sexy’s most trusted ally in a future episode.

SmackDown Redux (December 20th, 2016): ‘Tis the season for mic drops

236

[media-credit name=”WWE/Twitter:@totaldivaseps” align=”alignnone” width=”620″][/media-credit]

With only one SmackDown left of the year, team Blue needed to build up to a bang. And this week very much did so. With the claws out and the rumors put to rest, this week we see story progression, character build, and an impress load of Talking Smack – in every sense of the word.

One of the first matches of the night is an Intercontinental Championship contest between the champion The Miz (accompanied by Maryse) and the challenger Apollo Crews. After Maryse gets caught trying to cheat, she gets sent to the back. But with a Skullcrashing Finale, The Miz takes home the win, and his precious championship.

Renee Young comes out to interview The Miz, asking him about his obsession regarding the Lunatic Fringe, Dean Ambrose. The Intercontinental champion then turns the tables, by asking Young about HER obsession regarding Dean Ambrose, as she “sleeps” with him every night. And of course, Renee inserts a nice slap across The Miz’s face before storming out of the ring. Though, on Talking Smack she does apologize.

WWE.com caught up with her afterwards and asked the backstage correspondent about the incident. Renee said that she’s tired of the slander regarding her boyfriend, and finally felt the need to stand up for herself. She also found it pretty humiliating for The Miz to say that kind of comment in front of so many people, so the timing of her reaction was more than necessary.

Following this, Natalya takes to the ring to address the Survivor Series issue. Neidhart calls out Nikki Bella to the ring, the Fearless One shows up! However, Carmella joins the pair – uninvited – as she wants to witness how Natalya “weasels her way out” of the situation. Nikki defends Natalya by addressing the Princess of Staten Island by saying that it could easily be her. Carmella, once again, says that she’d be bragging about it had she been the one to implement the attack. And then she says that instead of “daydreaming about the Saturday Night Live afterparty” with her boyfriend John Cena, she should realize that her friend is a liar. She then ends her statement by saying “or has some of that silicone leaked up into your brain?”

Natalya interrupts by telling Carmella that she shan’t “dare” talk to her friend like that, but Carmella cuts to the chase. She insists that Natalya is looking for an Academy award as she doesn’t even care for Nikki. The Princess of Staten Island reveals that Natalya cried on her shoulder over the fact that Nikki was getting all of the attention since her return, as well as saying that the only reason either Bella is in the WWE is because nobody cared when they tried to be successful on their own – ouch. After a dumbfounded Nikki is seen, Natalya, in disgust, admits that it was said to Carmella in “private” and that her conniving friend is nothing but a “dirty little Staten Island snitch.”

After Nikki asks whether Natalya attacked her or not, the Queen of Harts refuses to respond and decides to go for Carmella instead, as she “caused all of this.” The two run up to the ramp and Natalya manages to toss her betraying friend into the Christmas tree. Carmella manages to kick her off and get away, but instead of catching up with her, Natalya stays behind to address the Fearless One in the ring. “Alright, I did it, you bitch!” the Queen of Harts admits, shocking the longest reigning Divas champion. “I have always despised you,” she continued, gaining some momentum from the interested crowd. “I am Natalya Neidhart! I am wrestling royalty! You, are not.” She then goes on and tells her former friend that despite being the longest reigning Divas champion and a hard worker, she and her twin only got their credentials because of their beauty. “You’re nothing, just like these people here,” she emphasized, causing a bit of a boo from the audience. Her complaints continue as Neidhart brings up Bella’s magazine covers, red carpets and the Total Divas spin-off that “should’ve” been hers. She continues by saying that she didn’t get it through her “great personality” as even Neidhart’s cat (we’re assuming 2Pawz at this point) has more charisma than her – “yeah, bitch!” And despite Nikki’s inner and outer beauty, she is “nothing” in this life, and that is why John will “never” marry her. Mic drop!

Later on an “injured” Alexa Bliss greets SmackDown Live General Manager Daniel Bryan. Alexa says that her leg still “hurts” and that she demands a punishment for Becky Lynch for causing it. Bryan says that he has come up with a “fair” punishment, and it is a title match against Alexa next week on SmackDown! Bliss insists that an “injured champion” doesn’t deserve that kind of treatment, and Bryan reminds her that the medical staff have informed him that she is 100% cleared to wrestle. And if she doesn’t want to compete, she doesn’t have to worry about her match next week as she won’t be champion if she does so! A no longer Bliss walks away, but before she does so, she says that whatever happens to the “poor little soul” that she’s facing, is on Bryan.

The match then takes place and Bliss is scheduled to fight a fully masked and dressed wrestler that goes by the name “La Luchadora”. The Luchadora manages to outsmart Bliss throughout the match although the champion does get a few moves in. However, when she manages to get Alexa in a move that looks very similar to the Dis-Arm-her, the champion is forced to tap out. The Luchadora runs around the outside of the ring celebrating with fans – and the announcers – before running inside the squared circle to greet her defeated opponent. And it turns out, once the mask is taken off, it was BECKY! IT WAS BECKY ALL ALONG! The Blissed off champion then storms out of the ring as Lynch’s theme plays, and a signal that a new champion will be crowned next week is all we can see in the ring.

Earlier in the night, James Ellsworth was knocked out and injured by WWE World champion AJ Styles. So after being carried out by medical staff, Carmella interupts his interview with Dasha Fuentes to take care of him herself. No seriously, this actually happened.

Becky Lynch joins the Talking Smack panel to discuss the events from SmackDown. She makes a few corny dad jokes and discusses the potential of her winning the title next week. It’s a pretty chilled conversation, and really showcases the humorous side of her character.

The juicier bit takes place when the Queen of Harts takes a seat. She says that the night was about her as she realised that due to having regrets in her life, she needed to put the spotlight back on her. One of those biggest regrets that lead to her actions was training both Bellas how to wrestle. She insists that because of her training, she allowed the twins to take ahold of her spotlight and never give her any shine. And as she is a “Hart” – something she does not stop mentioning, she believes that she deserves the credentials that they have both achieved. The niece of Bret “the Hitman” Hart – as she makes very clear in this segment – admits to being tired of being pushed to the back of the line to allow newer ladies to take her slot. So she’s finally taking a stand!

Thoughts: I absolutely LOVED Natalya’s work this week. She really had a hold of her character and showcased genuine emotion here throughout both segments. Whilst I’m pretty disappointed that the attacker was in fact her, the story still holds some interest. The fact that we’re now seeing a genuinely heel Natalya is amazing. Her somewhat aggressive nature is what I’ve been wanting to see for a while, so this should be great.

What makes Natalya’s efforts work is that it feels real. The things she talks about – particularly on the post show – are aspects of her life that she can relate to. The Queen of Harts has been pushed to the back again and again for other women, and it must hurt her personally, even in the slightest. So to see Natalya transcend those real life emotions into her character is a treat as it makes the story feel as raw as it needs to be.

My negative feelings regarding the story arrive when discussing Nikki Bella. I understand the need to allow other women to shine, but must Bella be so quiet and dumbfounded the entire time? She comes across as so basic and it’s so dull to watch. Though the other women are given great opportunities to shine, it leaves me looking at Nikki with no opinion. And as a huge Bella fan, this is really disappointing. She used to be the highlight of the show for me, and now she just smiles to the crowd and gives a shocked look here and there. Can we please do something to change this?

Carmella’s antagonistic ways are a pretty great addition to the story. Seeing her continue her cocky nature and her constant disliking of any other woman in her presence is great for continuity purposes – and she’s pretty entertaining as she does so. However the most shocking action of hers comes at the end, when she comforts James Ellsworth. She’s obviously up to no good, and it’s so exciting to see. But what will actually come of it? I have no clue. It’s usually great to see women integrated in male oriented storylines so hopefully this will follow suit.

Introducing a genuine role for Renee shocked me, in a good way. Young has always been very good at her job; whether you look back at her time on NXT, Main Event, SmackDown Live or even the short lived After Total Divas, you’ll more than likely be impressed by her work. And because of her clearly strong work ethic, Renee definitely deserves to and should be involved in a storyline. I’m hoping that this will lead to an intergender story between Dean, Miz and Maryse as the Sexiest of Sexy needs more to do, and it will definitely spice up the title picture. And seeing Renee play the good girl – that even apologised! – is great, too. Hopefully over the weeks we’ll see her gradually get sick of the situation and take her anger out on somebody. Maybe she can even wrestle? We’ll just have to see!

The SmackDown Women’s championship story is going great as well. I love how refreshing the work feels this week. It has a huge dose of comedy, but not so much that you forget that there is genuine hatred and a title involved in the storyline. We see Becky anchor her good girl/class clown gimmick, whilst Alexa’s angry and bitter self shines through, and this combines into the perfect heel/face dynamic. Both ladies are so great at what they do, and it’s extremely easy to stand behind one person as it happens. And though we all have our opinions, what is so great about this feud is that both women manage to convince you to care for them. Whether you prefer the good guy or the bad one, you definitely care. You’re most likely rooting for good or evil, instead of being bored by both. And that is done through the refreshing story and the fact that both women are so great at conveying their respective characters.

For next week, though I’m a huge Lynch fan, continuity and title integrity has me rooting for Bliss.

And in regards to the side feud, I still hope that Natalya isn’t the attacker. My optimism says that Natalya only clutched onto the idea that it was her as she wanted to add fuel to the fire. She may not have done the bad deed, but as it was so easy to claim, she took ahold of it. And maybe we can see her partnering with the red head person that did do it?

TNA continue to look and steam ahead for the year of 2017!

As previously reported, TNA have planned a marathon of tapings for the first week of 2017 and have since announced that they will indeed return to the Impact Zone beginning January 5th, with a semi-live episode of Impact Wrestling, through January 8th, 2017.

The second half for this set of TNA tapings will begin January 10th and end January 12th. It is expected that these tapings will include a mix of material for episodes of Impact Wrestling, TNA Xplosion and One Night Only that will carry the company until mid-March for their next set of tapings.

On top of this January 5th show, TNA will reportedly also broadcast a special Live “One Night Only” PPV event the following night, January 6th. No details as to whether this would be a themed show or not.

Last year, TNA debuted a One Night Only: Live! PPV that saw Awesome Kong win a Knockouts Gauntlet match to become number one contender for the Knockouts title.

Currently, Sienna has a number one contendership for Rosemary’s Knockouts title – which she earned during last week’s Total Nonstop Deletion episode of Impact.
