In Pictures: Divas Recycle Christmas, Knockouts Strip Down

31

What kind of holiday would it be without our WWE Divas and TNA Knockouts taking part in the obligatory sexy Christmas photoshoot?

Well, it’s touch-and-go for the Divas this year as WWE has [insert-shocked-gasp-here] recycled (YES RECYCLED!) last year’s photoshoot with a couple of additions for Kaitlyn and Natalya. Click here.

Surely it’s just darn right cruel to disappoint all the little boys (or middle aged men rather) whose Christmas traditions include flicking through the annual Divas Christmas photoshoot? They already touched themselves to enjoyed viewing these pictures last year. The men of the WWE Universe will sob into their eggnog tonight, WWE overlords. And it’s all your fault.

• • • • •

Okay… with those dramatics out of the way, let’s move onto the Knockouts, shall we?

It’s much of the same as last year for the TNA gals. More lingerie than you can shake a stick at, lots of festive ornaments and most importantly: plenty of sexually suggestive poses. (“Hey Velvet, nice box between your legs,” say the middle aged men of the TNA Universe… er, Continent?)

In this shoot, we have the likes of Winter (aka Katie Lea aka Katie Lea Winter), Angelina Love, Tara, SoCal Val and Velvet Sky. (Cry yourself to sleep, Mickie/Madison/Sarita fans.)

Angelina Love & Winter Become New Knockouts Tag Team Champions

20

The bond between Angelina Love and Winter grew a lot stronger last night on Impact as the former Katie Lea helped Angelina become one half of the new Knockouts Tag Team Champions.

In the finals of the Tag Team Championship tournament, it was set to be Angelina & Velvet Sky (The Beautiful People) taking on Madison Rayne and Tara. However, after a brutal beatdown at the hands of Sarita (with help from a leather strap) earlier in the show, Sky was unable to compete.

Instead Angelina went it alone for much of the match, taking punishment from Tara and the Rayne, until Winter ran down to ringside in her first appearance inside the Impact Zone and took Sky’s place.

Winter picked up a hot tag and a decisive victory over the Knockouts Champion allowing herself and Angelina to pick up the Knockouts Tag Team Championship.

This marks Angelina’s first time as Tag Team Champion. Winter also makes history by winning a championship in her first TNA match.

Former NXT Rookie Diva Coming to SmackDown?

55

Former NXT Rookie Diva, Naomi could be getting a call up to the SmackDown brand.

Naomi is listed for the December 30th blue brand house show at the IZOD Center in New Jersey on the arena’s official website.

The arena lists Naomi teaming with Layla against Natalya and Beth Phoenix.

Thanks to BLBurchill for the tip.

Tribute to the Troops Watch: Kelly Kelly is Santa’s Most Helpful Little Helper

The Divas once again dusted off their sexy Santa outfits for the annual Tribute to the Troops show taped earlier this month in Fort Hood, TX. It was an 8-Diva tag team match as Kelly Kelly led her helpers – Natalya and the Bell Twins – into battle with Lay-Cool and their helpers, Alicia Fox and a newly-heeled Melina.

Regardez:

Kelly’s team is out first and frankly, I’m not sure why it’s Kelly’s team considering Natalya is the Divas Champion. Surely they should be coming out to her music? Anyhoo, they’re followed by Lay-Cool and co. and we get this match started in front of a huge WrestleMania-sized crowd. I was actually in awe of how long the entrance ramp was and the size of the crowd. Very impressive and generous of WWE to lend their time to all of these troops.

Alicia & Nikki Bella kick things off with A-Fox in control, wrenching Nikki’s arm. Nikki is whipped into the ropes it with a nice tilt-a-whirl backbreaker by Fox. Foxy whips Nikki into her corner aggressively and tags out to our new heel Diva, Melina. The former Divas Champ takes control and begins stomping at Nikki before hitting her with some hard, aggressive forearms. Brie tries to come into the ring and make the save but the referee catches her. With the ref distracted, the other heels begin attacking Nikki in their corner and Michelle hits her head against the side of the ring.

NXT Redux (December 21st, 2010): Maryse and Ted Come from Money but They Can’t Buy a Victory…

Well folks, Christmas has come early around these parts because not only did the WWE deliver a Divas match on NXT tonight, but yours truly gets to put on her NXT hat and bring you a Redux one more time! On tonight’s episode, season four pro, Maryse, and her pro boyfriend, Ted DiBiase, teamed up with their rookie, the beast of a man known as Brodus Clay, to take on the team of Chris Masters, his rookie, Byron Saxton, and a mystery Diva partner of their choosing. Lets take a look at how all of this played out!

The abortion of a theme song, “I Come From Money”, begins to play as the main event gets set to take place. Maryse and Ted make their way to the ring, arm in arm, with Brodus trailing behind them. The happy couple are chatting as they enter and get set, and Brodus just looks scary. Once their music fades, Christ Masters’ theme starts to play and he walks out with Saxton. They head to the ring and stop at the apron waiting for their mystery partner. It doesn’t take long for the music of the WWE Divas Champion, Natalya, to hit and she is greeted by a nice reaction and kisses to her hand from both Saxton and Masters. Talk about charming (especially Saxton with that million dollar smile)! Josh Matthews and Todd Grisham go over the rules for a mixed tag match while Nattie plays to the crowd. The bell finally rings.

SmackDown Redux (December 21st, 2010): What Happens On SmackDown Stays on SmackDown (and Should Never Happen Again!)

After a brutal tables match at TLC and a fun match on Raw complete with a heel turn twist, you’d think that on the live edition of Tuesday Night SmackDown, the great Diva match roll would continue on. You would think that after announcing a handicap match on Raw for SmackDown featuring Dolph Ziggler and Vickie Guerrero teaming up against Super John Cena that this week’s SmackDown would be the most epic SmackDown ever.

Oh it was epic alright. An epic fail.

Instead of greatness, we were forced to witness the complete violation of poor Vickie. Storyline continuation in the WORST way. And a reunion of sorts that the majority of the free world wishes wouldn’t have happened at all. With that kind of intro, you’re just begging to take a look at the action, aren’t you? Well sit back, grab some tissues, and get ready to weep. It truly is just that bad.

The first Diva sighting of the night involves Rose Mendes. She’s walking alongside Big Show Santa Claus and they’re handing out presents backstage. After Rosa says ‘Feliz Navidad’ to backstage worker and gives him a present, Hornswoggle pops into the picture. He has a toy bag over his head and when they pull it off, he is dressed like an elf. Of course he is. He places his hand on Rosa’s hip and the three of them continue to walk with the promise of more to come later.

Random Observations: Oh joy. I just can’t wait for more. On a more positive note, Rosa looks smoking hot tonight and her little Santa outfit is sexy! I wasn’t exactly a fan of the darker hair at first, but she’s working it tonight.

Women of Wrestling Podcast Christmas Special with Allison Danger, Kellie Skater & Rhia O’Reilly

Sit back with your mulled wine, party hat and ill-fitting Christmas jumper and join Stew & Lee, as they look at recent news, reflect on some of our interviews from 2010, and dole out the official podcast awards for Wrestler of the Year and Woman of the Year. However, nothing can quite go according to plan, as your intrepid hosts are visited by three guests… err… ghosts… in a tri-continental “A Christmas Carol”-themed special. Dropping in are the returning Allison Danger (talking exclusive news about the reformation of Pro-Wrestling SUN and *so* much more randomness), followed by Australia’s very own “Rate Tank” Kellie Skater (talking her 2010, being an international gangsta and her abusive relationship with Lee) and finishing up with Northern Ireland’s rookie prospect Rhia O’Reilly (on training with Lance Storm, working in Europe and her dreams for 2011). Thanks for supporting us with a phenomenal 2010, and we hope to move on to bigger and better things in 2011. Happy holidays!

Raw Redux (December 20th, 2010): The Slap Heard ‘Round the World

52

After a decisive victory over Lay-Cool at TLC on Sunday, Divas Champion Natalya was on the market for a new challenger for the coveted butterfly belt. Lucky for her, this week’s Raw featured a triple threat #1 contender match between Melina, Alicia Fox and Eve, all former champions in their own right. Which one of the beauties came out on top? Check out the match below:

We come from commercial to find Natalya at the announcer’s table, looking gorgeous might I add, scouting her future opponent. Melina’s music hits and she does an accelerated version of her usual entrance. Alicia Fox is out next, followed by Eve. As her opponents prepare themselves, Natalya engages in a bit of playful banter with the commentary team, showing off her more carefree side. The official signals for the bell and our #1 contendership match is underway.

Alicia wastes little time and goes right after Eve with a few stiff strikes. Melina tries to get in on the action, but eats an elbow in the process. Alicia goes back to work on Eve, throwing her into the top rope, before setting her sights on Melina. Alicia takes Melina out with a flurry of strikes, before pulling down to the mat by the hair. Eve tries to fight off the ‘vindictive’ one, but Alicia tosses her out of the ring, leaving her alone with Melina.

Diva Dirt Year-End Awards 2010: Nominations Revealed, Voting Open

40

It’s that time once again! 2010 is nearly a wrap and it’s time to look back at the year gone by in our third annual Year-End Awards. Who will be crowned Diva of the Year? Knockout of the Year?

Each year these awards go through some changes and this year is no different. This year’s Year-End Awards are bigger than ever with far more categories and nominations than in the previous two years. Since we began taking suggestions earlier this month for nominations, the awards have gone through some changes which you will see as you browse below.

However, before jumping straight into the nominations and voting, please read our guidance notes below to help you.

Guidance Notes
Earlier this month we decided to include ROH in our awards for the first time along with WWE and TNA, however since then we have also decided to include the independents. Diva Dirt is always committed to providing independent coverage where possible and we wanted to reflect that in our Year-End Awards this year. There is a certain negotiation that has to occur for us to include independent wrestlers, promotions and matches, however. So rather unusually for these awards, I’ve decided to explain our choices beforehand. First of all, there are three independent categories, while the others relate to the ‘big three’. While we could have certainly included more of these independent categories, we have to take into account that the majority of our readers don’t watch independent products and are generally WWE and TNA viewers. Having said that, we wanted to honor the independents to an extent too because it is true that the girls on TV get all of the shine. They already have great high-paying jobs and are on national TV every week. We have the opportunity here to spotlight the independents as well, who don’t necessarily get that coverage. So like I said, there is some negotiation here and we think we have done the best we can this year. Depending on how things go, we will hopefully expand these awards again next year.

Most of the awards are pretty straight forward as with previous years (though there are a lot more nominations than ever before!) but in order for these awards to work, we need to make certain allowances. While the main categories are pretty much pick-and-choose from the nominees listed, the independent categories are less structured. Because the independents don’t have the same reach as WWE or TNA, the criteria for these awards is slightly different. The criteria for Independent Wrestler of the Year and Independent Promotion of the Year is not only based on merit for those who have access to the performers’ matches or the promotion’s DVDs/live events, but also based on reach and exposure. What has the wrestler or promotion done to get their name out there? How much exposure does it have online to fans worldwide? In wrestling media like Diva Dirt or in magazines? This is as much important on the independent level as being a great wrestler or promotion.

We have selected five independent female wrestlers for this award based on the above criteria but that does not by any means mean you have to vote for them. This category is very much fluid and there is a write-in option. Our nominations in this category, while we feel are merited, are also a guideline for that large majority of readers who are less informed of the independents.

As for Independent Match of the Year, this award is open to all as a write-in category but there is a catch. The matches must be available for public consumption either on DVD, pay per view, online etc.

You will also find under each nomination a description of the criteria for that category. That criteria should be used in helping you inform your vote.

Of course, we have now also launched the Diva Dirt Legacy Award, which will be a physical award that will be awarded to one female each year as determined by Diva Dirt’s editors. This year, we are honoring Trish Stratus. Click here for the press release.

Remember: these awards are supposed to be fun and are not serious. Each year we get people who take them far too seriously and seem to really get worked up over the nominations and eventual winners. We include our readers in the entire process of these awards from suggestions for nominations and the actual voting. Again though, this is just for fun and it’s something we do for you (it’s actually a lot of hassle to put this together and it’d be a lot easier if we didn’t do it). Have fun with it and don’t take it too seriously.

And the nominations are…

TLC in Review (December 19th, 2010): Divas Go Extreme and Look Fashionable While Doing So

A lot of people, myself included, were left flabbergasted when the mysterious Raw GM announced last Monday night that Michelle McCool and Layla would face off against Divas Champion, Natalya, and Beth Phoenix in the first ever Divas Tables Match at TLC. Lets face it, the WWE doesn’t exactly have a reputation for taking their girls seriously, and when this announcement was read I pretty much felt my jaw hit the ground from sheer and total shock. I quoted several times this week that this match had all the potential in the world, but it would end up being a total hit or miss. Thankfully for everyone involved, from the girls to the fans, the match was an absolute hit. Beth, Natalya, Layla, and Michelle made history last night and put their bodies on the line just to entertain the fans in the audience and those watching around the world. They proved that above all else they are wrestlers with just as much passion for the business as the people who bust their asses on the independent scene for years. Those people who write the Divas off just because they work for a company that only believes in giving them five minutes of airtime a week (max) that they’re not capable of putting together a truly good show. I really hope that everyone who watched the match or will watch will appreciate that the four ladies involved made the best use of their allotted time and did everything they could to make the match memorable.

It truly was one of the best Diva matches I’ve ever seen.

Former Divas Champions, Lay-Cool, are the first two to make their way to the ring. The Slammy award winners have their statues in their hands as they make their way to the ring. Both Michelle and Layla are sporting new ring gear and allow me to show my real wrestling fandom here; no doubt the top ring gear I’ve ever seen. Wow, both of those outfits are gorgeous. Anyway, moment over. Lay-Cool aren’t their usual confident selves as they go to the ring. They walk past several tables and Layla pretty much looks like she wants to cry. Michelle takes her hand and they finish walking together. As both members of Lay-Cool get on the apron, Layla declares that she doesn’t want to do the match at all. The cameras cut to highlights from SmackDown featuring what went down between all four women before cutting back to the ring. Michelle and Layla were seen having just watched the package and of course, that just got their emotions going again. They turned around and pointed to the pink table, crying about what could happen to them, when the Glamazon’s music started to play.

WSU Announces Second iPPV for January, Headlined by Ladder Match

WSU will return to iPPV on January 22nd, the company revealed to Diva Dirt today.

The iPPV titled ‘The Final Chapter’ will be headlined by a blockbuster match. Both the WSU World Championship and the All Guts No Glory Championship will be on the line as Mercedes Martinez and Angel Orsini do battle in a ‘Winner Take All’ ladder match.

More details about the iPPV are due to be released tomorrow.

Extreme Makeover Gets ‘Best of 2010’ Nod by WWE

18

April’s Extreme Makeover Match between Beth Phoenix and Michelle McCool has been deemed one of the top 25 matches of 2010 by WWE.com.

The match ranked #21 on the year-end list.

See the countdown here.

Thoughts: Perhaps a little premature as last night’s match definitely blew ‘Extreme Makeover’ out of the water. Nonetheless, congrats to Beth and Michelle.

WWE TLC: Lay-Cool Laid Out in First Ever Divas Tag Team Tables Match

The holiday season isn’t getting off to a great start for Lay-Cool.

The Diva duo were sent crashing through a table by Divas Champion, Natalya in the first ever Divas Tag Team Tables Match at TLC just moments ago.

In an extremely entertaining match that saw multiple twists and turns, Lay-Cool were outsmarted by ‘Glama-Hart’, the team of Beth Phoenix and Natalya.

The end saw Natalya push both Layla and Michelle McCool off the turnbuckles resulting in them falling onto the table. However, as the table didn’t break, Natalya then took a big leap of her own – hitting a crossbody to pick up the win for her team.

Amongst the highlights of the match were a double Sharpshooter as Natalya locked in both members of Lay-Cool for the infamous submission, as well as a pretty scary bump for Beth Phoenix. After being tossed out of the ring by Michelle, the Glamazon landed rather badly on her neck yet got back to her feet and resumed with the rest of the match.

Thoughts: This was one of the most exciting, compelling Divas matches in recent memory. The gamble of doing such a match most certainly paid off. Kudos to all involved.

WWE TLC Discussion Post

WWE presents TLC tonight featuring the first ever Divas Tag Team Tables Match between Lay-Cool and Beth Phoenix & Natalya. Who will be going through a table?

It all kicks off at 8pm ET on pay per view.

Discuss the show in the comments!

PPV Predictions: WWE TLC 2010

Tonight will see the first ever Divas Tag Team Tables Match as Beth Phoenix and Natalya (Glama-Hart) team up to take on Lay-Cool. Who will be put through the table? And who will walk away with the victory? The DD team weigh in…

Cryssi: I expect a lot of shenanigans mixed with chaos in this match. The WWE picked the right four women to compete in this type of match. Natalya and Beth are brawlers, and Lay-Cool will have the comedy aspect down pat. Call me an optimist, but I expect this to be a beautiful match. Everyone will get a ‘spot’, but at the end of the night I fully expect to see Michelle McCool to go through a table with Layla slammed down on top of her giving Natalya and Beth Phoenix the victory. As far as after the match, that’s when things get fun. As the champ and the Glamazon celebrate, Melina runs out with a steel chair in hand and clocks Beth in the back, getting rid of her. Natalya is confused but she starts brawling with Melina. When the A-List Diva gets the upper-hand I expect her to ‘Last Call’ Natalya in the middle of the ring, set up a table, and send the Divas Champion through it. Heel turn completed.

David: Tonight’s Divas Tag Team Tables Match at TLC should be historic! If it was simply Divas Champion Natalya and a returning Beth Phoenix vs. resident bad girls Lay-Cool, that would be exciting enough for me. But add in a rich, interesting storyline (a rarity in WWE) and the hardcore stipulation, and these four girls have a great chance to wrestle a match we’ll remember for a long time. I am not sold on Beth’s friendship with Nattie; sure they might like each other but Nattie has something the Glamazon wants, the championship belt. I think Natalya and Beth Phoenix will defeat Lay-Cool tonight but then once the match is over Beth will slam Natalya through a table, sending her a message: in the end “gold and diamonds” really are a girl’s best friend.

Eric: There are two questions floating around in my head about this match. 1) Do both partners have to go through a table? 2) Is Beth even capable of a stunt like this? Does Layla even have the body mass to go through a table? While I am interested to see what WWE decides to do with the match, I don’t see any heel Beth/heel Melina swerves going on. I predict a short and sweet match. Look for Michelle to go through the table and look for Layla to be slammed on top of her. Natalya and Beth Phoenix will win. Maybe then Natalya will finally get a new challenger.

A History of Divas Going Through Tables

Tonight’s TLC pay per view will see the first ever Divas Tag Team Tables Match, but it wouldn’t be the first time in history that a WWE Diva has gone through a table, however. Oh no!

During WWE’s boom period, the ‘Attitude Era’, many a Diva found herself in that devastating spot — usually courtesy of Bubba Ray Dudley.

Let us reminisce on some good ole fashioned Diva table spots!

Trish Stratus

Before she became the 7-time Women’s Champion and built a legacy befitting of our first ever Diva Dirt Legacy Award, Trish was known as something of a harlot while with Test & Albert. She ended up on the wrong side of a certain Bubba Dudley and ended up paying for it.
