FCW Watch: Jamie Keyes vs AJ Lee

Welcome to another edition of FCW Watch! This week, NXT 3 Rookie Divas AJ Lee and Jamie Keyes face off in singles action. Which one of these rookies will come out on top? Check out the match below:

Out first is the Queen of FCW, AJ Lee and she quite different from the AJ that we’ve come to know and love (or hate) on NXT. While I’m a big fan of the perky and bubbly AJ of NXT, I must say I prefer heel AJ much more. Her haughty and conceited character in FCW is much more interested than her over the top NXT counterpart. Out next is Jamie Keyes, who poses to the crowd while AJ mocks her from the other side of the ring. The referee signals for the bell and the match is underway.

Saying Goodbye to the Women’s Championship & Why This Could Be a Positive

The retirement of the WWE Women’s Championship has been the big talk of the town here at Diva Dirt in the past week. The DD team has weighed in and multiple former champions have weighed in including but not limited to Beth Phoenix, Mickie James and Melina. We also got the comments of a certain legendary former champion too, but more on that later.

It’s with a heavy heart that all of us women’s wrestling fans say goodbye to the Women’s Championship. Say what you will about WWE’s Divas product in the past few years, but the history and lineage of that belt — dating back 54 years — must be respected. Female wrestlers who we recognise today dreamed about holding that championship belt when they were simply fans just like the rest of us. As Sara Del Rey, a woman who has never held the belt but obviously respects it, said: “In many ways, that was the most prestigious belt in all of women’s wrestling.” While I would argue that SHIMMER, pound for pound, delivers the best quality championship matches in the ring, no belt has the same visibility and lineage as the WWE Women’s Championship did. Seen by millions of viewers on a weekly basis and around the world, the majority of fans have grown up with this belt and trained themselves to think of it is the ultimate prize for a woman in wrestling.

Judging by the comments made by those aforementioned former champions, they have obviously been touched to have had the honor and privilege of holding that title. While wrestling is scripted, perhaps we underestimate what the words, ‘Former WWE Women’s Champion’ appended to one’s name can do for your career — even beyond WWE. While physically the belt has changed appearance over the years, to be considered as part of the same lineage as WWE Hall of Famers, Fabulous Moolah and Wendi Richter, is a ‘money can’t buy’ feeling for our Divas today. Following in the footsteps of even Trish Stratus, while a more modern day name, is an honor also.

The women’s division in WWE may not be where it was at a few years ago when Trish Stratus and Lita battled in the main event of Raw for that belt, and some of the matches may not have been as lengthy or memorable, but the prestige of the belt speaks for itself.

So as we say goodbye to the Women’s Championship, I want to take this moment to also say thank you. Thank you to all of those women who have held the belt, who have tried their hardest to uphold the legacy of their predecessors and most importantly, who have tried their hardest to entertain us fans as champion. No doubt, we all have our own personal favourite champions and championship reigns, but each woman tried to bring their own touch to that belt and here we are today. Thank you to all of you!

The Five to Watch 2010: Leva Bates

Welcome to the conclusion of the Five to Watch 2010! Diva Dirt is always on the look-out for bright, young talent breaking into the scene in women’s wrestling. Always with a finger on the pulse of up and coming talent, over the next week, we will bring to you the five talents we that we feel could be breakout stars in the future. Meet the Class of 2010…

LEVA BATES

Who is she?
Ever since her debut in 2007, Leva Bates has cultivated quite a fan following. The 26-year-old was trained by Bubba and D-Von Dudley at Team 3D Academy in Florida. Her background included dancing as well as acting, and she wound up at Universal Studios in Orlando as a stuntwoman. She had been into wrestling ever since she was a child, so while working at Universal, she came across TNA. From there, she found out about wrestling schools and enrolled in Team 3D’s school. Leva has worked for several independent companies, such as SHIMMER, Full Impact Pro, World Xtreme Wrestling, Coastal Championship Wrestling. While I was researching her story, I found out that she’s a fellow Kentuckian – you go Leva!

Her story so far…
Being trained by Team 3D probably led to her having a spot in Awesome Kong’s $25,000 Challenge. She was one of the participants who tried, but ultimately failed to pin Kong to win the cash and a TNA contract. Leva has had several notable feuds, mixing it up with the likes of Betsy Ruth (former TNA Knockout Rosie Lottalove), Amy Love, Lexie Fyfe (actually winning the Southeastern Championship Wrestling women’s title in April 2007 by pinning Ruth, then Fyfe in a gauntlet match), Malia Hosaka (whom she pinned to win the United States Championship Wrestling women’s title in July 2009). At the SHIMMER tapings in April 2010, she made her SPARKLE debut by defeating She Nay Nay on April 10th. She worked another SPARKLE match on the 11th, teaming with PJ Tyler to defeat the team of She Nay Nay and Anna Minoushka. However, she was fortunate enough to gain a match against old foe Malia Hosaka on SHIMMER Volume 30.

At the SHIMMER tapings in September 2010, she made it onto the main roster and had a standout match against Allison Danger. Even though Danger won the match, Leva gave her a run for her money. After the match, Danger got on the mic and really put Leva over as a breakout talent. The match itself was phenomenal, definitely one to watch when the DVD comes out. That weekend, she also faced off against Melanie Cruise and Cat Power, both fun and entertaining matches as well.

Impact Write-Up (September 23, 2010): Well, That Certainly Wasn’t PG!

It’s that time again! Time for our weekly dose of TNA Impact! What will those wacky Knockouts be up to on this edition?  Will Tara and the Rayne bring the pain, or will the Beautiful People (now with extra added Lacey Von Erich!) find some way to thwart their dastardly schemes? Perhaps some gold will switch waists? Lets find out!

We see Lacey Von Erich walk into the makeup room where the original Beautiful People – Velvet Sky and Angelina Love – are already there, chatting amongst themselves. Lacey sits down and looks deep in thought (I’m refraining from cracking a joke here) until finally Velvet asks if she’s okay. At that… the youngest Von Erich EXPLODES. It’s a beautiful rant, made more perfect by the F-bombs Lacey throws out there. Brings a prideful tear to my eye. Go ahead, listen to it. I’ll wait – there’s no words that can do it justice.

The Five to Watch 2010: Jamilia Craft (Plus Exclusive Video Interview)

Welcome to The Five to Watch 2010! Diva Dirt is always on the look-out for bright, young talent breaking into the scene in women’s wrestling. Always with a finger on the pulse of up and coming talent, over the next week, we will bring to you the five talents we that we feel could be breakout stars in the future. Meet the Class of 2010…

JAMILIA CRAFT

Who is she?
Jamilia Craft just turned 19 last month, has been wrestling for 8 months, and is already on everyone’s radar as a rookie who is well on her way to doing great things. She began her training at the SHIMMER Wrestling Academy with seasoned veteran, Daizee Haze. In her short career she’s already wrestled in SHIMMER, Ring of Honor, Pro Wrestling Respect and World Xtreme Wrestling. Not only does Jamilia’s potential stand out to the fans, but her look does as well. She is one of, if not, the only female wrestlers in America, wrestling with a mask — not to mention the several tassels hanging off of her ring gear. Her unique look is a tribute to Joshi legend, Kyoko Inoue.

Her story so far…
Once you watch Jamilia Craft, it is hard to fathom the fact that she’s only been wrestling for 8 months. One of her best matches to date was against Mercedes Martinez on SHIMMER Volume 29, which was her debut for the company. During that match she was able to surprise Mercedes and hold her own against her in a physical match. She has also been in the ring with Kellie Skater, Cat Power, Daizee Haze, Tomoka Nakagawa, Malia Hosaka, Misaki Ohata, MsChif, and Sumie Sakai. Jamilia hasn’t won any titles yet, but it certainly isn’t doubtful that she will sometime during her career. Not only is she part of the SHIMMER roster, but she is also a regular for Pro Wrestling Respect, a wrestling company designed specifically for Ring of Honor and SHIMMER Graduates where they have the opportunity to wrestle other students as well as the veterans.

In Review: ACW’s “American Joshi Queen of Queens Tournament 2010”

In 2009, Anarchy Championship Wrestling based out of Austin, Texas started an annual tradition when they promoted the first “American Joshi Queen of Queens” tournament (won by Daizee Haze). I got it and enjoyed it, and really didn’t think much of anything about ACW until the next show came along. This is therefore the first ACW DVD I’ve picked up since then, and the lineup looks stellar – so let’s see if the action delivers.

We start with some sort of skit with a group calling themselves The Submission Squad. I recognise Athena, but I have no idea who the others are. Whoever they are, they are completely annoying. One of them is wearing a belt of some kind, and I assume they’re wrestlers. You wouldn’t necessarily know that to see them. The skit involves someone called Davy Vega who may or may not have had a plane crash and who may or may not have crawled four miles from the wreckage of the plane go get here. One of the guys says “What the hell is going on?”. I agree with this.

Next up is Jessica James backstage. She is apparently a last minute addition to the tourney, and it becomes clear that she’s up against Sara Del Rey. “Crap”, she says. Again, I agree with this comment.

We’re now inside the building, and there are more men that I’ve never seen before talking about things I know nothing about. I hit FF. After three consecutive skits, we get… a skit. This again features Athena and some of the annoying guys from the first skit. All things told, that’s ten minutes of the DVD and I haven’t seen a wrestling ring yet. Oh dear.

The Five to Watch 2010: Brittney Savage

Welcome to The Five to Watch 2010! Diva Dirt is always on the look-out for bright, young talent breaking into the scene in women’s wrestling. Always with a finger on the pulse of up and coming talent, over the next week, we will bring to you the five talents we that we feel could be breakout stars in the future. Meet the Class of 2010…

BRITTNEY SAVAGE

Who is she?
In just two years, 23-year old Brittney Savage has had one of the fastest ascensions in independent women’s wrestling. Trained by the NYWC head trainer Pat Buck, the current WSU Spirit Champion has quickly risen to the top of Women Superstars Uncensored, accruing multiple championship reigns and becoming one of WSU’s highest profile stars, second only to the internationally known Mercedes Martinez. Determined to raise her profile to even greater heights, Brittney has ensured that the power remains on her side, as her heel faction “The Cosmo Club” continues to dominate WSU into the tail end of 2010. With her ever improving ring skills, natural promo skills and undeniable charisma, Savage has even caught the eye of WWE, competing under the name of Brittany Carter during the Beth Phoenix Squash Tour of late 2009.

Brittney vs Beth Phoenix

Her story so far…
Since making her pro wrestling debut two years ago, Brittney has worked for NWA, ACE, WXW and several other independent promotions in the mid-atlantic area. However, Savage’s greatest success has been in the aforementioned WSU. Mere months after her debut for the promotion, Brittney captured the WSU Tag Team Championships with then partner April Lee (WWE NXT’s AJ). Following Lee’s signing with WWE, Brittney turned heel and feuded with main eventer Alicia, winning the WSU Spirit Championship from her on two occasions. With her strong allies The Cosmo Club (Rick Cataldo and WSU Tag Team Champions Cyndi Rogers and Jana), Brittney has mastered the Eddie Guerrero art of lying, cheating and stealing her way to a win. It is only a matter of time before Brittney utilizes these talents in a quest towards becoming WSU Champion.

NXT Redux (September 21st, 2010): The Most Ridiculously Awesome Episode of NXT Ever

Last week on NXT, Jamie Keyes and Kaitlyn secured their statuses as NXT winner worthy. Jamie shined in the ring and on the mic, and Kaitlyn came off as a homewrecker who could kick some ass and do an obstacle course. You gotta love this show. This week, we were treated (or not) to a game of musical chairs, a Talk the Talk challenge, two matches, and of course, the goddess-like presence of the self-proclaimed co-Unified Divas Champions, Michelle McCool and Layla. How did the show play out? Well lets take a look!

Josh Matthews is seen at the broadcast booth all by his lonesome when NXT starts tonight. Michael Cole left the show last week and everyone rejoiced. Matthews says we can take our televisions off mute tonight. The theme music of CM Punk (which I like to sing every morning on my way to school) starts to play and he walks out in his ring gear and this hideous brown jacket. He walks to the broadcast table, tells Josh to shut up, and announces himself as Cole’s replacement. He tears up Josh’s autograph picture and says that he loves women, then throws it up to our blue eyed host, Matt Striker. Striker introduces the rookie Divas: Kaitlyn, Maxine, Aksana, AJ Lee, Naomi, and Jamie Keyes.

CM Punk: “I thought she won NXT season two…my bad. I thought she was Kaval.”

Tonight is going to be epic.
