Nikki Cross comes out of character in a backstage interview

1
Source: The Gorilla Position

Nikki Cross is one of the more upcoming women superstars from NXT. Her character is known for being crazy. However, she recently had an interview with The Gorilla Position, where she covered numerous of topics, including the one who is the mastermind behind her character in WWE.

This is the very first time fans will see Cross out of character. When wrestlers are out of their character, it is always pretty cool to see.

One of the things Cross talked about was how none of her friends watched wrestling and that she couldn’t really talk to any of her friends about it because they never watched it. Once she got into wrestling school and started her career, she finally found a place where she belonged and where she can talk about wrestling all the time.

“100%,” Cross said. “None of my friends watched wrestling, so I felt like I had to very much like keeping it and like a tight drawer like none of my friends watched that. It was, it was very yeah, no one knows watch that. So for me, when I finally joined wrestling school in 2008, when I started training in Glasgow, I was finally around people who watched wrestling and I could talk about wrestling because I was and for me, it was I knew I belong that family. Wrestling give me a place to belong and I think the a lot of our viewers and a lot of our fans and a lot of our WWE Universe can relate to that and it gives us all this place to belong and it’s that’s very good there’s really big house, who like there’s really big family and it just gives everyone a chance to belong and I think that’s why wrestling I sports-entertainment speaks to so many people because it gives them that chance to belong.”

Cross also revealed who was the mastermind behind her crazy character. It also seems like you can tie-in what she said above because her character certainly does not fit in with some of the characters we normally see in the WWE.

“I love it,” Cross said. “No I really do love it. It’s such a fun experience. What I’ve enjoyed the most about this character, being Nikki Cross, is that we’ve been able to develop for the last two-and-a-half, three years. Triple H had this brainchild and this idea and it was his baby and then he brought the idea to me and I loved it and then I was able to bring that to life and then put my salt and pepper on it. Put my little parts on it. Bring in elements from my real life, bring in stories from real life, make her relatable because I think the character Nikki Cross, she’s so much fun and she speaks to so many different people in so many different ways. It’s almost like telling everyone, ‘Hey, it’s okay if you don’t fit in’. Neither did I, and we have so much fun and I think it really tells people to embrace…it lets people know it’s okay to be as crazy as you want and play as you want and I think it encourages people to just live in the moment and I think that’s why it’s so much fun because I get to completely live in the moment and I just get to see whatever comes out of me so there really is that real life aspect of it because I’ve made that a part of me.”

However, in a situation like Cross, no matter how crazy the character is, you can still be pretty successful in whatever you do. Cross has had a pretty successful run so far in the WWE being with NXT. She also was successful in other wrestling promotions, like Pro-Wrestling: EVE, where she was a three time champion. She was also a W3L Women’s Champion with the World Wide Wrestling League.

It isn’t known as of yet which brand Cross will stay on, but she has been appearing on Raw and SmackDown! Live a couple of times throughout the year. Superstar Shakeup is this week for the WWE, so we will see for sure what brand Cross ends up in and where we can see her character evolve even more.

Mercedes Martinez thinks women’s WWE show is possible

24

Mercedes Martinez recently spoke with Mirror in regards to her time with WWE. She is heavily regarded as an indie darling who has collected numerous titles. She is currently one half of the Shimmer Tag Team Champions, with Cheerleader Melissa.

Although she is not signed with WWE, Martinez has participated in several matches on NXT. She spoke highly of her time competing in the Mae Young Classic, which she participated in for two years in a row.

During the inaugural tournament, she made it to the semifinals before losing to finalist, Shayna Baszler. There are already rumors of a third Mae Young Classic.

The “Latina Sensation” spoke humbly about her time in the Classic. She told Mirror that her second year doing it was quite a shock.

“When it came to the second it was more like, ‘why?!’ Like, ‘do I really deserve this second spotlight when there are so many other females that can be in my place?’ Then I realized, there’s a reason why I’m here for the second.”

She noted that the second time around it felt important for the indie stars to compete and show their skills on a larger stage.

The conversation transitioned from there into WWE Evolution and if there will ever be an all-female branded show. With the growing roster, the company could potentially showcase women on their own brand.

Mercedes had the following to say in regards to the idea:

” I think if they go in the right direction, I really do think they can have their own brand and something just for females. You have companies: Shimmer, Eve, Shine, Femme Fatal, Bellatrix. There’s just so many women’s companies out there that have their own brand and their own streaming. This is a market – just females. “

So, it’s not just enough to do a pay-per-view, we want our own stuff.” She continues, “And I think, even if you’ve got your Raw, Smackdown, NXT, NXT UK and 205 Live, what about women’s stuff? Not just the Mae Young Classic, but something of our own. I think that’s going to be the next big thing. Something weekly like a 205 Live but just females.”

WWE hasn’t planned an all-women brand. However, the idea isn’t far fetched.

Mirror highlights other topics such as her relationship with Sara Amato, her past injuries, her thoughts on All Elite Wrestling, and her goal to be in WWE. You can read the entire interview here.

Sexy Star claims she inspired the WWE Women’s Revolution

65

Sexy Star is making headlines this week, both for the victory in her MMA debut and for a controversial statement she made in an interview.

The former Lucha Underground Champion was a guest on “The Roman Show,” where she proclaimed she was the inspiration for what is now known as the WWE Women’s Revolution.

Sexy Star believes when she held the Lucha Underground Championship, the WWE took notice and the rest of history. She had this to say about her influence:

“I personally think that yes,” she said. “WWE took notice. I am proud that they gave me that opportunity as a woman, as a Mexican and as a warrior. I felt they (WWE) found out that that had a big buzz all over the world. I think it inspired them to act.”

Once, the interview was published, the wrestling community took notice and they weren’t shy about voicing their opinion on the matter. Some of the wrestlers who have responded on Twitter include Hurricane Helms, Paige, and Tessa Blanchard, to name a few.

Star is no stranger to controversy. Back in 2017, she dislocated Rosemary shoulder in a shoot armbar. These comments won’t definitely mend her reputations in the industry.

Sexy Star wins in MMA debut via unanimous decision

29

Last night, pro wrestler, Sexy Star, won in her MMA debut by a unanimous decision. She defeated her opponent, Mariana Ruiz, in a fight that took place in Star’s hometown of Monterrey, Mexico. The bout lasted three round.

The former three-time AAA Reina de Reinas champion, whose real name is Dulce Maria García Rivas, officially entered the world of mixed martial arts in February. She signed a multi-year deal with the promotion, Combate Americas.

In addition to being an accomplished luchador, she also holds an undefeated record of 5-0 in boxing. Considering her combat background, Rivas made a flawless transition to MMA.

Rivas made headlines back in 2017, and not for her accolades in professional wrestling. She received tons of backlash from fans and her peers when she dislocated Rosemary‘s shoulder with a shoot armbar.

The incident happened in a match at AAA’S Triplemania XXV. Afterward, the promotion stripped her of the Reina de Reinas Championship. Even more, she was taken off shows, and blackballed by several promotions
after that.

Sexy Star hopes for a fresh start in her new found career as a MMA fighter.

Five women who should switch brands for Superstar Shake-Up

The Superstar Shake-Up is just a few days away, meaning any wrestler could move to a different brand. After WrestleMania, WWE starts fresh with new storylines and competition for both brands. Becky Lynch currently holds both women’s titles, which opens the playing field for any woman on either roster to step up.

New faces are desperately needed on the main roster. Moving some talent from RAW to SmackDown Live may create new opportunities. SmackDown boasts a smaller roster due to its shorter runtime, but there is also more room to stand out.

All eyes will also be on the NXT roster as call ups to the main roster are inevitable. Last year, the only female called up from NXT was Zelina Vega.

Hopefully, this change to the rosters will paint a clearer picture for not just the main titles, but for the tag titles as well. Although the tag titles can be defended across all three brands, there is a definite need for new teams. In preparation for the big event, we have put together a top five list of women who could benefit from competing on a new brand.

Mayu Iwatani to take time off due to knee injury

5

It hasn’t been a very good week for Mayu Iwatani. This past Saturday at the ROH-NJPW G1 Supercard, she lost the Women of Honor Championship to Kelly Klein.

Today, she announced on Twitter that she will take some much needed time off to heal a nagging knee injury. Iwanti suffered a torn MCL in December of this past year at a Stardom show and the knee never fully repaired itself.

Will miss the draft of the 4/14 later. It’s too hard to walk. I haven’t had a sore day since I got hurt. On the contrary, I worked hard well up to now. I want to compliment myself. MSG out, it is a good opportunity to know, but I do want to mirror the condition, so I will be happy to rest. Hey guys.”

Iwanti will be taken a hiatus after the Stardom draft which takes place this Sunday the 14th. She will be a participant in a fatal five-way match against Kagetsu, Mono Watanabe, Jungle Kyona and Hana Kimura.  Although, she lost her Women of Honor Title, she still holds the Artist Of Stardom Championships alongside Saki Kashima and Tam Nakano.

Diva Dirt wishes Mayu Iwatani a speeding recovery and we look forward to her return to the ring.

Nia Jax will require surgery on both knees

117

According to Pro Wrestling Sheet, WWE superstar Nia Jax will miss an extended amount of time due to major knee injuries.

Jax suffered an ACL tear in both of her knees. The injuries will require surgery and a lengthy time off to recuperate. Typically, an ACL tear can take anywhere from six months to a year after surgery to heal and rehabilitate.

Jax alluded to the unfortunate situation on Twitter. Earlier today, she posted a selfie with the caption, “I’ll be gone for a while, here’s something to remember me by.”

Later, she posted a proper update. There’s no word on when Jax sustained the injuries, but she stated she has been “pushing through the pain for the last year.” This could explain why she and Tamina disappeared toward the end of the fatal four-way on Sunday.

The former RAW Women’s Champion has been featured prominently on TV since her debut. She won the title last year at WrestleMania 34 and carried it all the way through to Money in the Bank.

Most recently, Jax formed a tag team with Tamina. The two challenged for the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships on three separate occasions.

Hopefully, her surgery goes well. We here at Diva Dirt would like to wish Nia Jax a swift recovery.

Sasha Banks reportedly wants to leave WWE

After canceling an appearance on The Wendy Williams Show earlier this week, reports from Fightful seem to indicate that Sasha Banks may want to leave WWE.

Sasha and her tag team partner, Bayley, collectively known as the Boss ‘N’ Hug Connection, dropped the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships at WrestleMania to the IIconics—just two months after winning them at Elimination Chamber.

Speculation suggests Banks was unhappy with this last-second decision to have her and Bayley drop the belts. It seems she was led to believe that the pair would have a long title run in order to strengthen the credibility of the fledgling titles.

Banks was also reportedly unhappy with the plan for Alexa Bliss to get the upper hand on both her and Bayley on this week’s episode of Raw. The planned match and finish were ultimately changed, with Bliss picking up the win on just Bayley instead.

The report from Fightful goes on to say that WWE is handling the situation with Banks much like they handled the Revival’s request for release. They’ve told Banks to ride it out and that things will improve soon.

What do you think is next for Sasha Banks? Sound off in the comments below.

Rhea Ripley to miss up to eight weeks due to foot injury

10

WWE UK superstar Rhea Ripley reportedly sustained a torn ligaments in her left foot. According to Fightful and Squared Circle Sirens, she is expected to miss up to eight weeks of action.

Despite the injury, Ripley was able to compete at WWE WrestleMania Axxess this past weekend. She managed to compete, but she was seen sporting a walking boot in pictures afterwards.

The walking boot has been prominent since Mar. 21, when Ripley uploaded a picture to her Twitter featuring the boot. Earlier reports suggested WWE believed the injury was just a minor sprain, but it seems more serious than anyone thought.

The Australian-born superstar rose to fame with a promising performance in the inaugural Mae Young Classic in 2017, before debuting a new look and attitude for the second Classic last year. She was able to make it all the way to the semifinals before losing to Io Shirai.

Ripley made history this past year, as the first-ever WWE UK Women’s Champion. She would drop the title to Toni Storm at the inaugural NXT UK Takeover in Blackpool, and failed to regain it in the subsequent rematch.

We here at Diva Dirt wish Rhea Ripley a speedy recovery.

Beth Phoenix reportedly sticking around for WWE European tour

39

According to the latest report from WrestleTalk, WWE Hall of Famer Beth Phoenix may return to the ring on a semi-permanent basis after her appearance at WrestleMania 35.

According to the report, Phoenix is expected to “be part of WWE’s annual post-WrestleMania European tour and become a fixture on TV the next few weeks.”

Phoenix had made her return to the squared circle during 2018’s inaugural Women’s Royal Rumble match. She also wrestled alongside her former Divas of Doom partner, Natalya, on an episode of RAW before vying for the Women’s Tag Team Championships at WrestleMania.

Before her entry into the aforementioned Royal Rumble match, Phoenix’s last match came back in 2012 before she retired. She’s a former Diva’s Champion as well as a three time WWE Women’s Champion, and the youngest inductee ever enshrined in the WWE Hall of Fame.

Phoenix and Natalya tagged together as the Divas of Doom back in 2011, running roughshod over the women’s division until their split in 2012, just months before Phoenix would retire in October.

Are you guys excited to see Beth Phoenix stick around for a little bit? What do you think is next for her if she stays? Sound off in the comments below.

Referee fined after WrestleMania main event finish

75

WrestleMania 35 is over and the first-ever women’s main event is now in the history books. “Becky 2 Belts” defeated Ronda Rousey and Charlotte Flair via pinfall, becoming both the Raw and Smackdown Women’s Champion.

Various rumors and speculation about the finish of the match have surfaced since Sunday night. The winning pin wasn’t executed well and Rousey’s shoulders weren’t down for the count of three. The live audience didn’t even realize Lynch won until the ring announcer declared her the winner moments later.

According to an exclusive report by Fightful, the match was supposed to end with the crucifix pin on Rousey, but WWE referees have been instructed to treat the pins as a shoot. Since Rousey did not have her shoulders down for the three count, referee Rod Zapata shouldn’t have made the count.

Zapata garnered heat backstage from the incident, as well as a fine for an undisclosed amount for the misstep. Fightul reported that McMahon told the ref that he should have waited until Rousey’s shoulders were down to do the count of three. If any of the talent in the ring stumbled through the finish, it would be their error.

Supposedly, Rousey was upset, but it’s unclear if it was because of the botched finish or the injury she sustained during the match. Rousey, showed up to Raw this week wearing a brace as a result of a reportedly broken hand.

Regardless of the finish, the women still etched their names in history. Rousey appears to be taking some time off from WWE and as we saw this week, The Man’s next feud will be with Lacey Evans.

Paige to bring a new team to challenge the IIconics

The IIconics did the unthinkable and won the Women’s Tag Team Championship at WrestleMania. Last night on SmackDown Live, the champions were ready to defend their titles.

Former SmackDown General Manager, Paige, was keeping a close eye on their match via a monitor backstage.

The IIconics’ first title defense was against an undefeated local team, The Brooklyn Belles, who had a 45-0 record going into this match. After the new champions made short work of them, Paige had a secret to tell everyone.

She told Kayla Braxton that she will be bringing a tag team of her own next week. The Superstar Shake-Up is also next week, which makes this news perfect timing.

In a WWE Exclusive, The IIconics addressed their concerns on Paige’s announcement. Neither woman appeared to be phased by the news, stating that they will take on any competition. Peyton Royce and Billie Kay had the following to say:

“Point is, Paige wants to come out with this hot, hot new tag team, next week, we are ready. We are fighting champions and we are here to make this tag team division absolutely ICONIC!”

It is currently unknown what Paige’s role with this new tag team will be, but there is a good chance she could be their manager. She retired from in-ring action exactly one year ago.

Per Wrestling Inc. the rumored tag team will be The Sky Pirates (Kairi Sane/Io Shirai) from NXT. They have made a strong team on the yellow brand and most recently wrestled against each other at TakeOver: New York.

Who would you like to see Paige bring to the main roster as competition for The IIconics? Do you think this will be a newly formed team, or one that is already established? Leave your thoughts in the comment section below!

WWE released backstage correspondent Dasha Fuentes

28

WWE released Dasha Fuentes, per a report by Pro Wrestling Sheet. She joined the NXT as a wrestler back in 2014 but moved over to the NXT broadcast team in the following year.

It’s uncertain when the company made this move because Fuentes was in New York for WrestleMania weekend.

According to Ryan Satin, “Dasha has yet to comment on her release from WWE, but she shared a video on Instagram saying “it’s been an interesting couple of days” and that she’s going on a non-work related trip.”

Fuentes has also appeared on SmackDown and 205 Live as a backstage interviewer. She debuted in an NXT live event in April of 2015, teaming up with Dana Brooke, and Becky Lynch against Carmella, Alexa Bliss and Devin Taylor.

Alexa Bliss returns to in-ring action on the Raw after Mania

Alexa Bliss made her return to in-ring action on Monday Night RAW after a lengthy layoff, defeating Bayley in singles competition.

Bliss issued a challenge to both Bayley and her partner in the Boss ‘N’ Hug Connection, Sasha Banks, earlier in the day via Twitter. Bayley was the one to accept but would end up on the wrong end of the result as Bliss won in an impressive display.

Bliss has been out of action since the Royal Rumble back in January. Before that, she had been out of action for several months dating back to September, after suffering a concussion.

She filled the time between in-ring stints by serving as the head of the RAW women’s division for a time, as well as hosting her own talk show, “A Moment of Bliss.”

Most recently, she was the host of WrestleMania 35. In the role, she made several key decisions for the show, including booking the Smackdown Tag Team Championship match and inserting SNL Weekend Update hosts Colin Jost and Michael Che into the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal.

Bliss is a former five-time women’s champion and has been a stalwart of both the Smackdown and RAW women’s divisions since the brand split in 2016.

Lacey Evans looks to become Becky Lynch’s first challenger

As we reported earlier, Becky Lynch brought her two new titles to Raw tonight and addressed the fans. The Man was greeted with a huge ovation in her return, following the biggest win of her career on Sunday night.

Lynch was as confident and fiery as fans would expect after she capped off a feud with two opponents she has been feuding with since last summer. She exclaimed, “When all is said and done, this woman who walked in with nothing, left with everything.”

She also didn’t mince words, when she spoke of both former champions, extending an open invitation to Ronda Rousey if she wanted her title back. The Man went one to mock Charlotte Flair again for the opportunities Vince McMahon has handed her.

In the most shocking moment of the segment, Lacey Evans’ music hit as Lynch exited the ring. Evans waltzed down to the ring as she has for weeks. Fans expected her to go back backstage, again. Instead, she turned, and sucker punched Becky with the Woman’s Right.

From there, a quick brawl broke out between the two, extending up the ramp. Before The Man could lock in the Dis-Arm-Her, Evan wriggled out and stared her down from the ground below. It’s safe to assume Lacey will be the first to challenge for one of, or both, the titles.

What did you think of this segment and the possibility of a feud with Lacey Evans? Drop a comment below.

Becky Lynch will bring both titles to Raw tonight

48

Following her monumental win last night, Becky Lynch is the Raw and SmackDown Women’s Champion. Today, WWE announced the newly-crowned undisputed women’s champion will bring both titles to Raw tonight.

The Raw after Mania is the most exciting episode of the year, known for introducing new stories and wrapping up old ones. It’s unclear what kind of segment this will be, or what The Man is prepared to say when she addresses WWE Universe. However, there are several lingering questions.

Will either Charlotte Flair or Ronda Rousey also make appearances tonight? That’s the million-dollar question, with rumors swirling that Rousey could take a break after WrestleMania. In addition, the former Raw Women’s Champion suffered a broken hand.

According to Dave Meltzer, “Ronda has a broken hand, a severely broken hand. She just was diagnosed with it.” He also said, “This was scheduled to be her last match. Will she come back at some point? Obviously, that’s up to her.”

What do you think this means? Will Becky Lynch announce her new challenger for either belt? Will she decide which brand she will stay on? Could longtime rival, Charlotte, show up to challenge her?

Drop a comment below and check back with Diva Dirt for updates on Raw after Mania.

Becky Lynch wins both titles in WrestleMania main event

WrestleMania 35 is officially in the books. Becky Lynch, Ronda Rousey, and Charlotte Flair competed in a Winner Take All Match in the main event, and it was the Lynch who won to become the Raw and SmackDown Women’s Champion.

Becky Lynch is the first woman to hold both titles concurrently. In this historic triple threat match, all three women gave their all to put on a showstopping match.

It’s unclear what this means for the women’s division moving forward. Some sources say WWE will unify the titles. It’s also possible that someone will step up to take one of the respective titles back to their brand.

No matter what happens next, this match and finish will have major implications throughout the year.

IIconics win Women’s Tag Titles at WrestleMania

Tonight, the Women’s Tag Team Championships were on the line for the first time in WrestleMania history. The Boss ‘N’ Hug connection defended their titles in a fatal four-way match against the Divas of Doom, the IIconics, and the team of Tamina and Nia Jax.

In a shocking finish, the IIconics overcame the odds to become the new champions. The reigning champions showed off some great tandem offense. The Divas of Doom also looked strong, after a beautiful moment alongside Bret Hart during their entrance.

However, the finish came after Beth Phoenix hit a huge Avalanche Glam Slam on Bayley. Then Billie Kay swooped in, threw Beth out, and stole the win. This is their first title win in WWE and coincidentally their first appearance at WrestleMania.

It will be interesting to see who will step up to challenge them.

X-Pac proposes “Chyna Memorial Battle Royal” during induction

82

Newly-enshrined WWE Hall of Famer, Sean “X-Pac” Waltman, called for WWE to rename the annual WrestleMania Women’s Battle Royal in honor of his late stablemate, Chyna.

“You know, they have the Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royal, I think the Chyna Memorial Battle Royal has a nice ring to it,” Waltman said during his induction speech on Saturday night.

Chyna was inducted into the Hall of Fame alongside X-Pac and the rest of D-Generation-X. She was the “magic ingredient” as X-Pac put it and an integral role in the group’s overwhelming success.

The induction comes after years of WWE distancing itself from Chyna due to her controversial life outside of wrestling.

The WrestleMania Women’s Battle Royal is not without controversy, itself. Last year’s inaugural battle royal originally paid tribute to the late women’s wrestling pioneer, the Fabulous Moolah.

After a sizable backlash over allegations of misconduct throughout Moolah’s career, the WWE changed the name to “WrestleMania Women’s Battle Royal.”

Chyna wrestled for the WWE from 1997-2001, winning the Women’s Championship on one occasion, and the Intercontinental title twice. She was also the first woman to ever compete in the Royal Rumble.

Do you think we’ll ever see this proposed name change come to fruition? Sound off in the comments below.

WWE hasn’t decided on finish for WrestleMania main event

85

Wrestlemania is tomorrow and the main event is what everyone is talking about. However, there seems to be at least one person who has not decided on what the finish will be for the triple threat, Winner Takes All Match between Ronda Rousey, Charlotte Flair and Becky Lynch.

Vince McMahon reportedly hasn’t decided yet on what the finish will be for the main event, this is according to a report from Wrestling News.

Rousey has not refused to put anyone over and her main goal is to get over both Flair and Lynch because she thinks highly of them. As of today, Vince McMahon has not told creative what the finish will be for the match. As has happened in the past, it would not be shocking if McMahon did not decide on the finish until the day of the show.

In fact, they have also disputed that there is real-life heat between Lynch and Rousey.

The story is obviously not true. In fact, Lynch and Rousey are very good friends in real-life and they both have been helped by Paul Heyman during their feud.

It’s odd that McMahon hasn’t decided what the finish would be for the main event. But, this shouldn’t surprise everyone. However, betting odds still has Lynch as the favorite to be a double champion at the end of the night.

It will be interesting to see what McMahon decides to do. We will find out tomorrow night who will become both Raw and SmackDown Women’s Champion.

Zoe Lucas added another to growing collection of titles

RISE Wrestling broke records last week with their LEGENDARY event. As previously reported, the star studded event showcased 60 women from the independant scene. The main event pit the Pheonix of Rise Champion Mercedes Martinez against Kylie Rae in a No Ropes Submission match.

Rae defeated Martinez to become champion with a vicious crossface. Afterward, Miranda Alize came out to celebrate in Rae’s hard fought victory. We have a happy ending for Rae right? Not quite. She only had mere moments to bask in her win when Alize turned on her friend.

In an attempt to save Kylie, Martinez returned to stop the onslaught from Alize. However, the new champion wasn’t out of the woods yet.

Earlier in the night, RISE Wrestling introduced the RISE of the Contender 30-woman battle royal match. Similar to WWE’s Royal Rumble, the winner receives a title match after all the participants are eliminated when thrown over the rope. In the end, Zoe Lucas eliminated Aerial Monroe to win the inaugural event.

Unfortunately for Kylie Rae, the winner can have this match whenever they see fit. Lucas waited no time to bank on her illustrious reward and wanted her title match immediately.

Lucas quickly took advantage of the situation, and made short work of the champion. Once the bell rang, she hit her with a Scorpion Kick to win the gold.

This is her second title within a weeks time. Previously, she won the Ironfist Women’s Championship, ending Melanie Price’s 581-day reign. Zoe is also the reigning RevPro Undisputed British Women’s Champion.

Nia Jax’s schedule interfered with rumored intergender match

39

During a media scrum for WrestleMania 35, Nia Jax disclosed the reason why her rumored match with Dean Ambrose was scrapped. Jax claimed that a scheduling conflict with Total Divas was the issue.

“Unfortunately, my schedule…they didn’t have the schedule right and had Total Divas that I had to go to so it was more of the scheduling was off and we couldn’t make it work, ” Jax said to members of the media (h/t Fightful for the transcription).

The planned bout with Ambrose was built off of Jax’s appearance in the 2019 men’s Royal Rumble. Nia Jax entered as the thirtieth entrant and eliminated Mustafa Ali before being eliminated herself.

It seemed like WWE wanted to see how this intergender angle would play out with Jax. So, they had her interrupt and attack Dean Ambrose on an episode of RAW.

Shortly thereafter, ads began making the rounds for a Nia Jax versus Dean Ambrose singles match set to go live at a live event in Jonesboro, Arkansas on February 22nd.

The match would ultimately be scrapped and the angle was dropped. Fans were never given a proper explanation until Jax’s comments this weekend.

WrestleMania main event isn’t as progressive as it seems

This Sunday, at WrestleMania 35 women will compete in the main event for the first time ever. It’s a watershed moment that is long overdue. Indeed, with an overabundance of talent available on the roster, the company couldn’t afford to marginalize women’s wrestlers much longer.

This salient decision came at a pivotal time for female athletes. Women all over the world are accomplishing more in sports than ever before. Finally presenting women as equals among their male counterparts is commendable. However, it’s hard to praise WWE when it feels like some things haven’t changed much at all.

It’s tough to express this because this is a groundbreaking match, and the women involved deserve this opportunity. Still, it’s a little bittersweet when coupled with the lazy way the company has booked the other women for the last few weeks.

Yes, the occasion is a victory for the entire division, as well as all the trailblazer who came before them. But even so, it stings to see Charlotte, Becky Lynch, and Ronda Rousey elevated, while women of color are pushed to the background.

That isn’t to say WWE should’ve put another woman in the main event just to fill a quota. But they had the chance to showcase them in the SmackDown Women’s Championship match. Instead, they decided to put both titles up for grabs in a Winner Take All Match.

A long-standing criticism of WWE is that they don’t book more than one interesting storyline involving women at the same time. This decision goes a long way to prove those cynics right. It feels regressive and it taints the positive message of the main event announcement.

Admittedly, that almost feels harsh, but it’s impossible to reconcile both choices. WrestleMania 35 could’ve featured three women’s championships matches for the first time in the event’s history. What a missed opportunity.

If the idea is to present female competitors as equals, then they should compete in more than one meaningful match on the card. Furthermore, those positions shouldn’t be allotted to the same women when the roster is more diverse than it has ever been.

That leads to the elephant in the room, the curious usage of Asuka. There has been much debate over the Empress of Tomorrow’s first title reign on the main roster. Watching her drop the SmackDown Women’s Championship two weeks before The Showcase of Immortals was emotional. It left fans rightfully questioning why it was necessary to do this seemingly at her expense.

On the surface, it seems like WWE did plenty to promote her as a massive star. Asuka won the first women’s Royal Rumble, which granted her the opportunity to challenge Charlotte at WrestleMania last year. She eventually won the title in a match with two of this year’s main event participants. Surprisingly, she beat the hottest women’s wrestler in the company, Becky Lynch, clean in January.

That all sounds good until we take a closer look at what it did for her standing with the promotion. It always felt off that on the night of, and the following morning, that the news wasn’t that an Asian woman won the first-ever women’s Royal Rumble. No, everyone was talking about Rousey. Even more, when Asuka finally won the title she had to share that spotlight with Rousey again. It felt very much like she only won because Ronda interfered.

Considering those two incidents, we shouldn’t have been that surprised when she was forced to drop the title. That’s the crux of the issue here. The problem isn’t that Asuka can’t possibly recover from this and win the title again. It’s that she has been an afterthought more than once in situations that prop up women who are already in the spotlight.

A new feud, and noteworthy match at WrestleMania, would’ve finally granted her a moment that wasn’t tied to Rousey or Charlotte. Despite her list of accolades, she doesn’t feel like as big of a deal because she is always cast aside so one of them can shine.

Similarly, she made Becky tap out and in the next few weeks, Lynch received airtime on both Raw and SmackDown. The reigning champion didn’t appear on television at all. Losing the title after weeks of this was the metaphorical cherry on top.

That begs the question: how progressive is all of this if women like Asuka are relegated to the kickoff show so the main event will feel bigger? The problem doesn’t stop with her booking either. Why were most of the women of color thrown in a catch-all battle royal, instead of showcased on the main card?

It’s just disappointing to see privileged women take an opportunity from women who don’t get big storylines. Moreover, it’s hard to ignore that women of color are the ones who are getting neglected.

This isn’t the first time white women have been positioned as the face of women’s empowerment at WWE. A few months ago, Nia Jax criticized WWE on Twitter with the hashtag, #WeHereToo, for failing highlight the achievements of women of color. There was also the criticism among fans about the Evolution poster.

What makes this all so insidious is that it’s coupled with accomplishments like the WrestleMania main event so it’s hard to complain about it. Women are getting more favorable treatment with the company. However, WWE can’t be lauded for equality until they make those opportunities more inclusive.
