Beth Phoenix Receives Hometown Press, Talks About Competition Amongst Divas

18

The Rochester Metromix has an article about Beth Phoenix in regards to a Raw house show held in western New York a few days ago — a homecoming for the WWE Diva.

Beth talks about being proud to represent western New York in WWE:

There’s something about western New York that seems to breed fame. Taye Diggs, Abby Wambach, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Kristen Wiig, Chad Michael Murray, Renée Fleming and Teddy Geiger have all called this area home — along with a host of intellectuals, politicians and businessmen.

So it should come as no surprise that the WWE Raw show at Blue Cross Arena on Saturday, June 11, will be a homecoming of sorts for Superstar Diva Beth Phoenix.

“I’m really proud to represent western New York,” says Phoenix, an Elmira, Chemung County, native who was born Elizabeth Kocanski. “I’m looking forward to a warm welcome from this area.”

Phoenix also discusses her life before wrestling:

“Whenever people asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I said ‘pro wrestler,’ even as a little girl,” says Phoenix, 30.” She was the first female varsity wrestler in the history of Elmira’s Notre Dame High School, winning championships at the local and state levels. Before pursuing a professional wrestling career, Phoenix moved to Buffalo and majored in criminal justice at Canisius College while continuing her wrestling training at a small gym 28 miles away in Medina, Orleans County.

“It was tough not having any connections in the field,” she says. “I had to work my way from the ground up and keep banging on doors to get noticed.”

Beth also discusses the WWE Divas and the competition amongst them:

“Our moniker is ‘smart, sexy and powerful,’ but our first goal is being great role models for men and women alike. Looking great might initially draw them, but we are educated, have drive, college degrees and talent beyond ways in the ring,” she says. “You can’t get away with being mediocre if you want to be a WWE Superstar Diva.”

And while the Divas are united on their WWE identity, it’s every woman for herself on the road. Because they are often pitted against one another during performances, Phoenix admits that much of the tension carries off-stage as well.

“Divas have huge competition,” she says. “Friends are few and far between. In the locker room, you can shake hands or maybe have dinner, but in the ring it’s our livelihood and paycheck. I want to be the best.”

Raw Redux (June 13th, 2011): A Chorus Line… Seriously?

128

This week on a special three hour edition of Raw, all the Divas from SmackDown and Raw are coming together for a good ol’ fashioned 7-on-7 tag team match. Judging from past experiences, this should be quite… er, interesting…

Watch below as Kelly Kelly, Beth Phoenix, Eve, Gail Kim, Natalya, AJ and Kaitlyn take on the team of Brie and Nikki Bella, Alicia Fox, Melina, Tamina, Maryse and Rosa Mendes:

Out first are the heels, clad in black (mostly… Hey, Tamina!), followed closely by the babyface team with Kelly leading the pack. Both teams head to their respective corners, the bell is rung and our match is underway.

Kelly and Brie starts thing off for their teams, but Brie quickly tags in Rosa. Rosa sashays her way into the ring and takes a swing at Kelly. Unfortunately for Rosa, Kelly evades and takes her down with a Thesz Press, followed by an ass slap. Before Rosa gathers her bearings before Kelly proceeds to smash her face into the turnbuckle, sending her down in the corner and gives her a stinkface for good measure. Kelly finishes off her flurry with a running bulldog and goes for the pin, but is interrupted by Brie.

Apparently, this was a signal for all the Divas to storm the ring, because all hell broke loose as the Divas went after each other. When the smoke cleared, Kelly and Rosa were left in the ring. Kelly seized her moment and hit the K2 to pick up the win for her team.

Post-match, the babyfaces decided to have their own chorus line as a tribute to the Tony Awards on Sunday night. Yeah… My words have failed me.

I’ve never understood the point of having these huge Diva tag matches, if most of the girls aren’t going to get used. I would have much preferred to see a normal tag match, to be honest.

The lack of storyline progression is another issue that has plagued the Divas division as of late. As I’ve said before, I think the sudden departure of Kharma really threw a monkey wrench in WWE’s plans for the Divas, but that’s no excuse. There needs to be some sort of contingency plan for when these things happen. And even if there isn’t, there needs to be a better recovery time than this. It’s been several weeks since the Kharma storyline was dropped, and we still don’t have a contender or a clear cut direction for the division, which is a crying shame.

After seeing the treatment the Divas were treated on this edition of Raw, I don’t have high hopes for next week’s 3-hour Raw. Hopefully WWE can spare more than 3 minutes for the Divas next week. Maybe we’ll even get a… *gasp* storyline. Fingers crossed, people.

‘Mamachas del Ring’ Documentary Coming to DVD Next Week, Watch the Trailer

5

An exciting new documentary about female wrestling in Bolivia is coming to DVD next week.

‘Mamachas del Ring’, directed by Betty M Park, follows the story of four female wrestlers trying to make it in the male-dominated wrestling scene in Bolivia. The film centers on Carmen Rosa who struggles between her personal life with her family and her fame in the ring.

Watch the trailer for the film below — you won’t be disappointed!

‘Mamachas del Ring’ will be released on DVD next Tuesday (June 21st). Click here to purchase. More information here.

Thoughts: The trailer for the film looks amazing. We’ve seen the film and will be reviewing this week. Stay tuned!

Synopsis for the film below:

[notice]About the film

Set in the heights of the Bolivian Andes, Mamachas del Ring is the story of Carmen Rosa the Champion, a cholita and wrestler who struggles to make it on her own in the male-dominated world of Bolivian professional wrestling.

In 2004, Carmen Rosa was at the forefront of a cholita wrestler revolution. Never before had Bolivia seen an indigenous woman take her petticoats and bowler hat into the ring, and the crowds couldn’t get enough. Along with three other cholitas, Carmen became an international star, and all four were anointed the Mamachas of the Ring.

The film begins in 2006, shortly after their return from a star-making turn on Peruvian TV—but their rapid success has come at a price. Jealousy and envy begin to ripple throughout the wrestling community, and eventually they are black-listed from performing in Bolivia’s main wrestling league by its notoriously egotistical league commissioner, Don Juan Mamani.

Betrayed but not discouraged, the Mamachas take matters into their own hands. They pound the pavement organizing their own shows, contracting media appearances, and traveling for days to perform across Bolivia, often to paltry crowds who can barely afford to pay the entrance fee. They were the first indigenous women to wrestle; they were the revolutionary stars. Now they are the first women wrestlers to manage their own business and contracts, desperately hoping to regain their crowns.

The pressures of daily living and gendered responsibilities begin to eat away at the foundation of the Mamachas, and Carmen Rosa increasingly shoulders more of the work burden. Her day job as a street vendor begins to suffer and her attention to her family dwindles, until one day her husband issues her a firm ultimatum: wrestling or your family.[/notice]

WWE Ranks Sensational Sherri as Top Female Manager

31

In a list of the top 25 managers in WWE history, Hall of Famer Sensational Sherri Martel ranked the highest female at #5, beating out the likes of Sunny and more.

Also making the list is Sunny (#11), Miss Elizabeth (#13), Vickie Guerrero (#15), Stephanie McMahon (#19) and Terri Runnels (as alter-ego Marlena, #24).

Of Sherri, WWE.com writes:

But it was the volatile valet’s relationship with a young Shawn Michaels that placed her so high on this list. “Go back and look at when Shawn really started to develop — Sherri was right there,” Striker said. “It was Sherri whispering in Shawn’s ear, ‘you’re the best,” that blew his head up and the WWE Universe can only be thankful that she did.”

Thoughts: I’m pleasantly surprised to see Vickie rank so highly, as she was so memorable with Edge. Perhaps the other person I would’ve added is Lita — you can’t deny the Team Xtreme craze. But then again, perhaps the emphasis is on the word ‘team’ rather than her being the Hardys’ manager.

Do you agree with the rankings? Anyone conspicuous by their absence?

WWE’s Storyline Reason for Mickie James’ Exit

46

Buried in WWE.com’s recent Top 25 Dirty Deeds is this interesting tidbit: They are claiming that Mickie James was ousted from WWE by Lay-Cool. Kayfabe, of course, but pretty funny.

Counting down the top 25 dastardly moments in WWE history, including double-crosses and back-stabbings, Michelle and Layla‘s treatment of Mickie James ranks at #23. In particular, they point out the ‘Old MacDonald’ segment on SmackDown during which Mickie’s face was superimposed on a pig.

At the end of the piece, however, is this:

Team Lay-Cool’s cutting words did more damage to James than a Singapore cane ever could. The former Divas Champion may have fought back, but Michelle and Layla’s bullying affected her so deeply that she was gone from WWE within months.

Thoughts: Well, that explains that mystery!

Slammiversary in Review: Look Who’s Laughing Now

Oh buddy. We knew this was coming but were we really prepared for it? It did kind of come out of nowhere and I honestly thought it would be Morticia going for the title but it’s not. It is her creation, the blonde monster, going after the champion. She’s a former five time Knockouts Champion and has done more than her fair share of dominating the female division in Impact Wrestling. I am very curious to see what happens when two people, from opposite sides of the tracks, clash together. The suspense is killing me. So let’s hit play on this bad boy!

We start things off backstage where Jeremy Borash is standing with Winter and Angelina Love. JB states that Winter is about to lead Angelina into battle against the champion. Winter, creepy as ever, tells JB that he is standing too close to her minion and she doesn’t like it. So she pushes him back a few steps and tells Angelina that now that they are together, truly together, they are one step closer to their final destiny. When Angelina, looking like she’s finally crossed back over to the land of the living, takes that championship then they will be one step closer. She’s ready now. Winter knows she is ready now, but first, she must take her medicine. However, like a spoiled child, Angelina refuses the medication and tells her mistress that she doesn’t need it anymore. It took her awhile but she gets it now, they’re on the same page. Then she simply walks away, while Winter looks like she’s won the lottery. I want Angelina’s outfit. How hot is that?! And I do apologize for lack of video on the backstage segment. Blame bad quality but hey, the match is the important part.

Out to the stage first is the challenger, Angelina Love with Winter in tow. They stop to gaze around the arena and caress each other in whatever awkward, adoring way they do. Quick to make her way to the ring, Angelina creeps in and in something we haven’t seen in some time, goes to the corner. She stands up and holds up six fingers to show that she is going for her sixth Knockouts Championship. A record for the company, according to commentary. HARDCORE COUNTRY! The champion, Mickie James is out last and she doesn’t look as happy as she normally would. I suppose being choked out this past Thursday could put a damper on a good mood. I do have to ask..what the hell is with that hair, Mick? True to your style, I suppose but yeah, no.

The match begins, after a lingering look at the special time keeper and finally, the ladies circle each other. A rough lock up and Angelina comes out with the upperhand, tossing Mickie around the ring like a ragdoll. But Mickie is never one to back down and she comes back with a hair grab of her own, but Angelina just overpowers her like she’s nothing. For a minute there, I swear I thought we were going into a ghetto girl fight. Google them. Hilarious. So many earrings wasted. Anyway, Angelina wrenches the arm of the champion and drops a leg across it, looking to jack up Mickie’s elbow. She goes back to work real quick and Mickie manages to get a cartwheel in but Angelina just drives her into the corner. Leading into the kick/punch combination and finally, the senior official calls her out on it.

Insert awkward evil glare here.

It causes just enough of a distraction that when Angelina comes back in, Mickie jumps up and wraps her legs around Angelina’s throat. A headscissors takedown and Mickie may have shifted momentum, but those evil eyes to Winter almost brought back old school psycho memories. Angelina moves in quick, landing a suplex and going for a pin but it’s no good. A rebound into the ropes and Angelina goes for a clothesline but a baseball slide from Mickie leads to a flip over. The defending champion looks to be going for that rebound low dropkick, blowing a kiss to Winter before she hits the ropes. But Winter grabs her, dropping her like a sack of potatoes on the outside floor. Um…ouch. See what happens when you taunt people on the outside? Tsk tsk.

Angelina drops to the outside but out of sheer desperation, Mickie sends her flying into the steel steps. Winter looks to almost be having a panic attack as her…whatever the hell she is now, writhes on the floor in pain. Meanwhile, Mickie manages to roll back into the ring while the referee continues to count. Winter helps Angelina up, rolling her back into the ring which stops the count completely. It almost looks like we’re getting a little bit of old Angelina back as the two contenders crawl toward each other, laying fists to the face. They work their way up until Angelina lands a big knee to Mickie’s midsection, tossing her into the corner but Mickie comes back, dropping her challenger with a rushing clothesline.

Deep breath!

Winter is on the outside, slapping her hands against the canvas but Mickie is battling back now, laying it on thick with the fight back. The crowd is behind her as she goes up to the top, landing a nice Thesz Press to Angelina. She urges the blonde to get up but Winter grabs Mickie’s foot, however, she’s smart and is able to dodge the charge attempt from Angelina. A swinging back kick to Angelina’s face and Mickie goes for the pin, but before the referee could get a good count, Winter puts her minion’s foot on the ropes. Talk about getting all dramatic with the show. Winter, you should know better than that. With experience such as yours? Shame on you.

BOTOX INJECTION!

Out of nowhere, as soon as Mickie turns around and this leads Angelina into the cover. But Mickie puts her hand on the ropes and again, Winter is blatantly interfering. While Earl Hebner is distracted with Winter, Angelina starts laying the fists to Mickie James. He pulls her off of the champion and gets in her face, telling her to do what he tells her but she comes right back at him. It looked like she was going to bite his head off ala Ozzy Osbourne. Yowza. I’m pretty sure she even dropped the MF’er on him. Haha. But Mickie comes back, looking to go for the DDT but Winter is up on the apron, only to get nailed with a stiff shot to the floor.

Another exchange and Angelina grabs her but Mickie manages to execute a swift northern lights suplex. A bridge pin but Angelina kicks out after two. Into the corner they go, do-si-do and Mickie charge only to get rolled up. I swear, I have never been more tired of counting to just two in my life. Even with the leverage from Winter on the outside, it wasn’t enough. But Mickie comes back, sets Angelina up for the DDT and….what the hell?! SERIOUSLY?! Did you just botch the hell out of your own finishing move?! As many times as you’ve….ugh. Anyway, Mickie goes for the pin and somehow, it was enough to put the monster down. She claims the three count and wins the match, retaining her Knockouts Championship.

She starts to celebrate, though I’m not all that sure why. But Winter is in the ring and she goes after her, taking off that wide leather belt and just starts beating the hell out of Mickie with it. I believe one of my favorite people on the planet would say, “Beating her like a government mule!”. The bell is sounded multiple times, in a lame attempt to break up the beatdown but Winter is choking the air out of her. Hebner manages to get Winter off her back but Angelina, awakened from her dazed botched DDTness, snatches up the belt and goes in for the kill. A blatant choke with a knee to Mickie’s back but it doesn’t last long. The senior official is acting like the Cat Daddy of the ring and chases them away, but not before Winter can secure her belt. With evil glares and mischievious smirks, Winter and Angelina retreat to the back while Hebner checks on Mickie.

Thoughts: Well, it certainly wasn’t what I thought it would be but I can’t say it was absolutely horrible. It is odd to see Angelina coming out not looking like a creature of the living dead. No dark circle. She actually looked fresh faced and rejuvenated. It was a very awkward match, I do have to say. I expected a lot more, technical wise but it is what it is. That major blow botch at the end just kinda ruined it for me. I don’t even wanna know what that was but I’m glad they didn’t just end it there. I’m so happy they choked the hell out of her in the end. Teach her to botch again. Also, honorable mention to Christy Hemme for finally wearing a dress with no belt. Haha. Until Impact, my lovies! xoxo

WWE & TNA House Show Rundown: Results from June 9th – June 12th, 2011

1

Having trouble keeping up with all of the mainstream women’s wrestling that takes place off TV? Well fear no more! Diva Dirt has got your back with the House Show Round-Up! Without any further ado, let’s kick things off!

This weekend, we had not only Raw, not only Smackdown, but TNA represented as well! Raw saw a mix of matches, as Divas Champion, Brie, as well as Nikki, faced off against Kelly Kelly and Beth Phoenix for the majority. However, a special appearance from Eve Torres may prove to be the deciding factor in the bout.

Over on Smackdown, as they toured both Italy and Spain, fans were treated to a match between Natalya and Alicia Fox. No managers, no distractions, just a simple one on one contest that has been cut short whenever shown on television.

TNA even graced fans with a house show, as they promoted their ‘Basebrawl’ event held in Marion, Illinois. The night saw former best friends collide, as Velvet Sky took on the zombified, Angelina Love, with the lovely…talented…elegant…perfect…Winter, in her corner.

This past weekend’s house show results below:

Thursday June 9th

Smackdown in Turin, Italy
Natalya b. Alicia Fox (Source)

Friday June 10th

Raw in Syracuse, NY

Kelly Kelly & Beth Phoenix b. The Bella Twins
” Next Justin Roberts announced our guest hostess for the show, Eve Torres. She comes out and wow she is in a nice purple/black dress and looked as hot as ever. She announced that later in the show 4 fans would be picked to be in a contest [the usual dance contest for prizes]. At this point out come the Bella Twins to run their mouths and talk down to the hostess routine when Kelly Kelly and Beth Phoenix come out to Eve’s aid. This leads us to our next match:

– Kelly Kelly/ Beth Phoenix v. The Bellas – standard divas match. The kids were loving the faces and hating on the Bellas al though all were hot. Kelly played the face in peril until making the hot tag to Beth, who cleaned house. At one point the Bellas tried to leave and Eve threw them in the ring. After Beth hits a beautiful slingshot suplex, ala Tully Blanchard, Kelly gets the pin and the win. After the match Beth goes out and hugs Rick the sign guy.” (Source)

TNA in Marion, IL
Velvet Sky w/ Kevin Hunsperger defeated Angelina Love w/ Winter

“Kevin won the “Be a Manager” contest from ESPN Radio. He’s an anchor for WSIL TV. What could be said about this match. There was a ton of interference from Winter, and Angelina was doing a bunch of no selling due to her zombie character. Combined with Velvet’s slow-looking offense, and it just wasn’t a good match. Plus, the ringside fans seemed more interested in chanting for Kevin, as he’s a well known personality, at least in the section I was at. I believe the ending saw a failed interference attempt form Winter, which led to Velvet rolling Angelina up for the win.” (Source)

Saturday June 11

Raw in Rochester, NY
Kelly Kelly & Eve b. The Bella Twins (Source)

Smackdown in Barcelona, Spain
Natalya b. Alicia Fox (Source)

Sunday June 12

Raw in Bethlehem, PA
Kelly Kelly & Beth Phoenix b. The Bella Twins (Source)

Smackdown in Madrid, Spain
Natalya b. Alicia Fox (Source)

Thoughts: A lot of house shows this weekend it seems, but it’s a great way to make money so I suppose it’s a good thing. Raw looks pretty interesting to me, especially the detailed recap from Syracuse. I like the inclusion of Eve in the middle of the match as it’s something unique for a house show, so definite thumbs up. Smackdown tends to use as few people as possible when they go on a tour so seeing a singles match doesn’t surprise me. Natalya is probably a great representation to take over as she gets a good reception and she is established. TNA looks good, although, (if you read the full report) it sucks to hear that the weather was so humid out as I’m sure wrestling in that heat can certainly alter a performance in the ring.

Review: “Girl Talk with Shelly Martinez” Shoot Interview

30

While Highspots.com has long been one of the leaders in the beloved wrestling “shoot interview,” I personally feel that their best interviews have been with the women of professional wrestling. The “Diva Diaries” Maria Kanellis interview still makes me gasp and laugh out loud, even after multiple viewings. Perhaps, hearing the great feedback they have received on this shoot, Highspots has launched a new series of DVDs entitled “Girl Talk”, with the first of the line starring the controversial Shelly Martinez.

For fans seeking a long interview, they definitely get it with this purchase. The interview, which likely spans three hours when the bonus features are accounted for, is lengthy enough to require two discs, leaving customers with a feeling of getting a good “bang for one’s buck”. As an extra bonus, Diva Dirt audio contributor Amber Gertner (Untitled Allison Danger Show) delivers as host, utilizing a conversational and friendly approach that comes off as more of a conversation between friends rather than the traditional hotseat interrogation approach.

As the interview begins, it becomes clear that Shelly has had many ups and downs in not only her professional wrestling career, but in her personal life as well. Shelly handles extremely sensitive personal topics with candor and confidence, showing that she has come to terms with her life experiences. This results in a more positive vibe than many other shoot interviews have. Even when offering criticism of her peers, Shelly is quick to point out positive qualities (where present) of these individuals and own up to her own shortcomings, which is quite refreshing.

As with any shoot interview, the lovely Ms. Gertner begins in chronological order, asking the basic questions related to Shelley breaking into the wrestling business. While most of the women currently involved with the wrestling business either got into it via modeling or by finding a local wrestling school, Shelly used a little of both to get her start, as she would use her acting and modeling auditions and go sees as an opportunity to discover a way to break into the business. Eventually, an audition paid off as she was able to discover a local wrestling school. This factoid impressed me and added a little pizazz to a portion of all shoot interviews which is usually dull.

Equally interesting, is a disclosure that prior to entering WWE, Shelly auditioned for and made the semifinals of Tough Enough 2, until Hardcore Holly told her that she was “too thick in the waist”. (Shelly reports receiving a similar criticism from Johnny Ace during her first WWE tryout). Particularly unfortunate is that this criticism came at a time when Shelly was recovering from an eating disorder and just beginning to put weight back on. While it is well known that the big two companies have very strict requirements for the female talent, it does provoke the viewer to reflect on the repercussions these demands may have on the women who have to hear them.

This wasn’t the only occasion in which Shelly’s experiences and insight brings about questions on whether there is any shred of morality in major professional wrestling companies. While locker room etiquette can be confusing, and at times, ridiculous, Shelly’s disclosure that she once drank because tradition dictates that new talent must drink if a veteran tells you to is utterly reprehensible. As Shelly says in the interview, “What if somebody is a recovering alcoholic?”

And then there is Batista… Long time Diva Dirt interview listeners have heard nearly all the details regarding the top WWE star’s treatment of Shelly, but many may have forgotten that Batista’s vendetta against Shelly (which ultimately led to her release from WWE) started because Shelly stood up for a friend whom Batista was dating and verbally abusing in front of the other talent. The fact that a talent can get away with such actions because of his spot is extremely shady, and honestly rather depressing.

Thankfully, the DVD offers plenty of fun moments and enough juice to remain a “shoot.” While it was previously mentioned that Shelly tried her best to remain positive and she is quick to offer praise to those who helped support her in the business (Sharmell, ODB, So Cal Val, Terry Taylor and Kelly Kelly are but a few praised), she does offer criticism where appropriate. Shelly reveals that one misunderstanding between herself and Angelina Love while Love was in developmental created a rift between the two that lasted all throughout their tenures in WWE and TNA and was only recently repaired. Shelly also shares similarly negative experiences with Paul Heyman and The Sandman. However, it is a current WWE Diva and her betrayal against Shelly that resulted in Shelly stiffing her in the ring (to the delight of the entire locker room) that inspired the “No she didn’t!” head bob from me and will likely be the secret most viewers will be taking to Facebook and Twitter to share.

Unfortunately, Shelly’s desire to become a more positive person (unfortunate for us, not for her) resulted in her offering minimal details when reporting on the most shocking/horrendous stories involving talent. While Shelly is willing to report on these incidents, which include a love triangle between herself and two TNA talents as well as a particularly gruesome story involving a WWE wrestler attempting to sexually assault her (and then her getting heat when it was discovered that she had shared the story with Melina); she is unwilling to name the individuals involved. While this is understandable, it may turn off viewers who purchased the disc for two hours of trash talking and secret telling.

However, if the viewer is satisfied with hearing some fascinating albeit non-gossipy stories about Shelly’s experience in the business (her beginnings in TNA and comments on how Salinas oddly strengthened her Mexican American identity are fascinating) as well as a lot of disclosure regarding Shelly’s perseverance from a victim of childhood physical and sexual abuse to that of a strong and inspirational human being than this purchase is well worth it.

As a whole, this DVD meets expectations. While the “shoot” aspect lacks a lot of the secrets that one normally finds in such a DVD, Shelly’s experiences in life and in the wrestling business are interesting enough to keep one’s attentions for over two hours. This is largely due to Highspots’ decision to utilize the interviewer, Amber Gertner in an on screen role, and allow her to offer her opinions and insight. This keeps the viewer feeling like they are in the midst of a conversation and keeps the DVD from becoming monotonous, which it could have easily become considering the length of the DVD. An overall solid first showing from an experienced veteran in women’s wrestling and I very much look forward to future releases in the “Girl Talk” series.

Note: The DVD also includes bonus matches from the Dangerous Divas release featuring Shelly, as well as a 2005 interview with Pro Wrestling Dreams. Even more bang for your buck!

Serena Deeb Down Under: Results & Pictures from Serena vs Kellie Skater at Wrestling for Rotary Charity Event

As Diva Dirt reported last weekend, former WWE Diva Serena Deeb took part in a show titled ‘Wrestling for Rotary’ in Bendigo, Australia. The show, which also featured many international wrestling superstars – the likes of other former WWE wrestlers in U-Gene, “Ironman” Rob Conway, the “Intrepid Traveller” Paul London, Jimmy Yang and more – was said to have been well received, with the crowd (of around 350 people) being responsive to all of the matches and wrestlers.

Serena ended up wrestling, and defeating, Bacchus Marsh native Kellie Skater in what was said to be a ‘fun match’. As previously stated, the two are no strangers to one another – with a recently released Serena answering Skater’s open challenge at the September 2010 SHIMMER tapings. You can check out pictures of the match, held June 11, below, courtesy of Steve Bradford.

Prior to the show even being held, the Rotary Club of Eaglehawk held a dinner in honour of the wrestlers. You can check out a video, filmed by local news channel ABC, here (there is only a brief glimpse of Serena, seated with Jimmy Yang). The video is accompanied by an article, with comments from members of the Rotary Club:

[notice]Over the years the Eaglehawk Rotary Club has played host to governers and Prime Ministers, but their latest guests won’t soon be forgotten.

As part of their ‘Wrestling for Rotary’ fundraiser, they invited the visiting rumblers for a dinner in their honour.

“I was very favourably impressed from the moment they walked in the door. I’ve got some lovely grandsons and they remind me very much of them. I’d like to think mine behave like that when they’re out,” says Lola Miller from the Rotary Club.

“You look at the act in wrestling, but these people are basically pretty down to earth people. I think they’re very community spirited,” says long time member Leon Scott.

The wrestlers won’t be quite so friendly when they take to the ring to battle it out – all in the name of charity.[/notice]

In other Kellie Skater news, she has been the first announced competitor to take part in PWWA’s next show – to be held on September 3rd, 2011 (presumably at the Liverpool Masonic Center in Liverpool, NSW, Australia). You can now ‘like’ PWWA on Facebook. They are currently asking fans who they’d like to see on the September 3rd PWWA show.

TNA Slammiversary Results: Mickie Wins but the Celebration’s Cut Short

Knockouts Champion, Mickie James successfully retained the belt over Angelina Love tonight at Slammiversary, despite Winter‘s best efforts to interfere.

However, after the match it was made clear that the war is far from over as Winter and Zombielina choked Mickie James out with a strap.

Thoughts: I enjoyed the match until the end which saw the Mickie-DT botched. The post-match attack was well done, however.

TNA Slammiversary Predictions: Mickie James vs Angelina Love

13

The Diva Dirt team weigh in on tonight’s Slammiversary pay per view match between Mickie James and Angelina Love.

April: This is a hard one for me. I’ve been watching this feud unfold, even in the short time because obviously, it’s my job. However, I still can’t decide who I think is going to walk away with the Knockouts Championship. I may just have to wing it and say that I’m going to go with Angelina Love as the winner. I would hate to think that Mickie would lose her title after such a short time, because I think she really earned it, but I can see Zombielina putting one over on her. She and Winter have been on a tear as of late and with the new developments, it seems like the monster and her mistress are even more hellbent on destruction. I am very curious to see how this match comes out and who the champion will be after it is over. Slammiversary is pretty much the biggest pay-per-view for Impact Wrestling so it is bound to be a damn good show.

Bobby: Even though I feel this match should have been Mickie against Winter, what can I do about it? I’ve found Mickie to be vastly more entertaining since her arrival in TNA, and I’ve enjoyed her programs with Tara and Madison Rayne, even though I felt the one with Rayne lasted far too long. Angelina is not my favorite Knockout to challenge for the title, but I’ve enjoyed her work lately against Miss Tessmacher, and more recently, Mickie and Tara, so this should be a pretty good match. I see the bout having a lot of interference from Winter, and Angelina coming close to winning multiple times. In the end however, Mickie James picks up the victory after shoving Angelina into Winter and hitting the DDT. I really hope this leads into a program between Mickie and Winter, but I’m just glad someone different is facing the Knockouts Champion this month.

Cryssi: I’m not even going to pretend to know what’s going on with these two because I don’t keep up. Last I heard, Angelina was some type of no-selling zombie and Mickie was Knockout Champion. I’m assuming that’s the still the case so I reckon we’ll have a match up full of shenanigans from the Angelina/Winter side and a Mickie victory at the end. So that said, Mickie James will prevail! Hardcore Country.

Erin: I feel like, somehow, this Angelina/Winter thing has to come to a head, if not in a way that destroys the hold Winter has over Angelina, then something that slightly changes the dynamic. I think if Mickie were to manage to fight off the two of them, it could accomplish that. Perhaps Winter gets a little too angry at Angelina’s loss, or the loss shakes something loose in Angelina’s psyche. The Angelina/Winter storyline has been going on for some time, and Mickie has had little to nothing to do with it, so I don’t see why this match would serve to do much other than strengthen Mickie’s reign as champ and shake up the stagnant storyline. Mickie James wins and retains her title.

Katelyn: As evidenced by the latest Impact Wrestling show, Mickie James’ second person, Tara, still has Madison Rayne to deal with, and with Winter being at Angelina’s side, my vote goes to Angelina Love picking up the victory. The storyline between Angelina and Winter has been going on since October and as of late, TNA seems like they are really pushing Angelina’s ‘zombie’ gimmick making her a stronger competitor. I predict that a victory over the champion and a title belt will only further along whatever Winter’s ‘master plan’ is.

Melanie: I’m not as excited for this match as I should be. Here’s Angelina Love, TNA’s golden girl versus the big star from WWE. In terms of merit, Angelina is the quintessential Knockouts Champion, having held the belt five times, and Mickie is a former five time WWE Women’s Champion. This match should be a big deal. Instead, it’s taken a back seat on the TV show, in my opinion, to ODB vs Velvet. Really, that match should be on this pay per view. I think it’s too soon for Mickie to drop the belt; she should have a nice long run. I would like to see Mickie vs Angelina/Winter continue, with more storyline development going into the next pay per view. I say Mickie James wins, perhaps due to a miscommunication between Angelina/Winter. Going into the next event, I would have Mickie try to get to the root of Winter’s manipulation of Angelina, which would lead to Winter trying to shut her up & mind her own business.

Unwrapped (June 12th, 2011): Eve, Maryse & Melina

15

Every week, following WWE.com and TNAWrestling.com’s photoshoot updates, we’ll take a look at the newest Diva and Knockout shoots and give you the opportunity to voice your opinions on them in a feature we lovingly call Unwrapped. Let’s unwrap this week’s eye candy, featuring Eve Torres, Maryse, and Melina:

Eve Torres
Eve looks quite pretty in this empire-waisted dress. It flatters her really well, showing off her toned arms and legs. Her big hair gives the whole look a kind of vintage feel, though it’s still undoubtedly modern. I love the simple color scheme, and how the accents at the waist are echoed in the bracelet. It’s all a very put together look. Her poses, though, are a little less interesting. She’s mostly cool and friendly, but there’s not much spark in the photos. I kind of understand, with the toned-down colors, why she’s not giving peppy wide-mouth smiles, but I still feel like the mood of the shoot is too toned down. The plain black background probably doesn’t help either. It’s just, when I look at these photos, I don’t see much that’s memorable, aside from the dress, and I always prefer it when the shoot is carried by the Diva, not the clothes.

Maryse
This is definitely a classic Maryse style photoshoot: she’s wearing something with a high fashion feel to it with some big, wavy hair and plenty of flashy jewelry. The dress looks gorgeous on her, with its fit and design complimenting her curves in a lot of ways. The lines of the dress pull the eye to her waist instead of her chest, and I think that’s a much more stylish way to look sexy. Her poses are, as always, evidence to her haughtiness: she frequently looks off-camera and tosses up her signature “talk to the hand” gesture. Maryse has really perfected the holier-than-thou poses, making them look anything but forced. The whole package, from the dress to the accessories to the poses is, like I said, classic Maryse. She looks beautiful and is posing like she knows it.

Melina
Melina, as usual, is thinking outside the box, and in this shoot has decided to pose alongside a semi truck. With its interesting colors and textures, it really adds something to the shoot, and Melina doesn’t let it go to waste, working several angles from posing in front of the grill to leaning against its side to hanging off the passenger side door. She creates a lot of interesting photos, showing plenty of attitude. It’s a different kind of attitude, though: she’s not sneering, but even her smiles show a bit of her heelish confidence. Her outfit compliments her slightly grungy surroundings, wearing black pants with lacy cutouts, high-heeled black boots and a corset-like tank top with a decidedly grungy font adorning it. It’s definitely an outfit that works better in these surroundings than it would in a regular studio shoot, because it’s got a lot going on and the big shiny semi kind of helps take some of the focus. Speaking of shine, her hair and makeup are gorgeous in their own right.

Impact Write-Up (June 9th, 2011): The Road to Slammiversary is Paved with Evil Intentions

54

I do apologize for the inconvenience due to a late post. I went through hell earlier with my cable company to figure out why my internet modem was out. Then of course, after all of that, due to the fact it is in my roommate’s name, he had to call when he got home. So blame them! Last week, we saw the Knockouts seriously take a turn for the clinically insane. Between an impromptu streetfight to an all out top serving of Wacky Mac(extra cheese), I was honestly ready to dial up Dr. Drew so we could get a intervention. These women have either seriously hit menopause or just said to hell with it and gone straight to the insanity plea. I’m not sure. All I know is that it continues this week so I hope you all have your forks ready. I brought the juice boxes. Dig in!

Our first taste of Knockouts action comes in the form of a tag team match with Angelina Love and Winter, the first pair to the ramp. The resident crazies, one worshipping in her own glory while the other stares a hole through the universe itself. They’re taking on the team of Tara, who makes her way out on that orange crotch rocket we haven’t seen in awhile and Mickie James. HARDCORE COUNTRY! The Knockouts Champion bounds onto the stage and skips down the ramp, dressed like she just stepped off the farm. You know how it is, making Ellie May Clampett look like trailer trash. Her hair is done in a nice little twist and that big smile is always present on her face. All this while Angelina stares a burning ball of fire through her with those zombie eyes.

The bell is chimed so Winter and Tara start things off, Morticia getting the upperhand. She does her best to get Tara in the corner to tag in Angelina but Tara flips her over, dragging her to the other side. Tara tags in her partner and Mickie goes up top, coming down with a big double axe to Winter’s wrenched arm. A nice leg drop of sorts and the “vets” are staying focused on that arm of Winter. Definitely interesting to see these two working together so well, after all the bullshit they went through. A pin attempt but it’s no good so the champion tags in Tara, pulling off a nice double team elbow. Another pin attempt but Winter kicks out, dropping the former bodyguard with a jawbreaker.

Cue the creepy “Here Comes the Zombie” music.

Winter tags in Angelina, who very slowly steps into the ring and immediately sets her sights on Mickie. She raises her arm and points at Mickie, following her as Mickie moves back and forth on the apron. Even zombies have hand/eye coordination. Bravo, Angelina. Mickie, never one to back down, sticks out her arm for a tag but Angelina goes after Tara, getting a hefty sideslam for her effort. A thought on pin attempt but Tara tags in Mickie, landing a double team lifting splash on the fallen Frankenstein. Another pin attempt but it hardly gets past one before Angelina pushes out, shoving her opponent for this Sunday, into her corner. Winter tags herself in and with a little whirl around, Mickie comes back…yet another pin attempt. Whatever happened to just fighting and then going for a pin in the end? If I have to write “pin attempt” one more time….nevermind.

Mickie picks Winter up by her hair and with a forearm/kick combination, Winter reverses it into the corner. However, a rush leads to an elbow to the face but when Angelina inserts herself into the equation, it brings on the double team effort. Tara tries her best to tell the referee but we all know they aren’t the brightest bulbs in the box. Winter goes for the odd pushover cover but the official is distracted and barely gets a count before Mickie kicks out. Fingers in the hair and Winter drags her over, tagging in Frankenstein. The monster gets in the ring and SLAM! with a pin but the champ bridges out of the count. Another tag and I’m getting dizzy again. However, a taunt to Tara leads her to jump in the ring, distracting the official again. This gives Frankenstein an ample spot to choke the hell out of Mickie from behind. Clever crazies.

As soon as the referee turns back, Winter lands a stiff kick to Mickie’s midsection. But she gives her too much time and the country girl fights out of the predictament. She does her best to go for a tag to Tara but Winter jerks her back by the hair, slamming her to the canvas. It flips her across the mat and Winter tags in Angelina, but Mickie sets Morticia up for a neckbreaker, landing a drop kick to Angelina at the same time. I’m sorry. What?! Can we get a replay on that, please?!

Wow. Just had to make sure I saw that correctly.

All three women are down and Mickie is crawling toward her partner, dying to make a tag. Tara is itching to get in but I bet she’s going to be wishing she hadn’t. Out of nowhere, Madison Rayne runs down the ramp and drops Tara’s face down on the apron. She slingshots her into the near steel steps, removing her from the picture. Ultimate revenge? I don’t care. I just want her jeans. Anyway, Mickie had reached her corner but Angelina is right behind her. With a blink of an eye, Angelina just cracks Mickie’s back across her knees, flatlining her. A pin attempt, the FINAL pin attempt and Angelina picks up the three, winning this for her Mistress Morticia. Speaking of, she gives the signal to finish the champ off and Frankenstein obliges, locking in that choke submission. I’m pretty sure I saw a smirk there. Did anyone else see a smirk? Tell me I’m not finally going batshit myself.

Later in the show, we see ODB backstage, bitching about her opponent’s make-up and fake eyelashes. Really? You’re bitching about someone else wearing make-up when you’ve got on a full face?! Not to mention, you bitch about boobs but grope your own constantly and your panties are showing without you even bending over. Hypocritical much? Mhmm. Anyway, the Dirty Bitch enters the arena from the side, no music but she’s brought her flask. Imagine that. Thankfully, she doesn’t get long to run her mouth before Velvet Sky whips her around and just starts wailing on her. She takes to slamming ODB into the side of the steel stage, exacting revenge for the attack from last week. Vel Vel drags ODB toward the ring and goes to send her flying but ODB reverses, sending Vel into the steel steps. My knee hurts now. I can’t even begin to explain to you how much it hurts to slam your knee like that. Ugh.

They finally make it into the ring and ODB demands the official ring the bell, immediately going for a cover. She gets a two count, much to her aggravation and starts laying stiff shots into poor Velvet. ODB stalks around, giving Velvet time to get back up and she tries so hard to fight back, but ODB powers her into the corner. Multiple shots to Velvet’s abdomen and it just doesn’t look good for the solitary BP. She does her best to battle back but ODB is just powerful as hell. Although, I can definitely do without the “Eat a weiner.” comment. I want to smack her with an etiquette manual. But I have to give it to the referee because he stays on her. She keeps getting in his face and he keeps spitting back, even pushing at her shoulder at one time. But even with the time Velvet has to fight back, ODB lays the boots to her in the corner. Stomping a mudhole? Nah.

ODB, distracted by the referee and their disagreements, while Tazz starts comparing her to chimps at the Bronx Zoo. He says something about throwing feces and honestly, I can see the resemblance at this point. I can’t even recap this because it isn’t even a match. If there were a bar, it would be a brawl and I’m pretty sure ODB would have a broken beer bottle in her hand. Hell, she even shoves the referee after slamming fist after fist into Velvet Sky. However, you take too much time away from your opponent and you risk losing momentum, which she does. Velvet powers out of the corner when ODB rushes her, taking her down with a clothesline. And she stays on her, just like you should, slamming her into the corner. Seven, count them. Seven shoulder blocks into the turnbuckles and multiple stomps, plus a foot to throat choke. This is one screwed up equation.

It calls for a count from the official but Velvet doesn’t care. She comes out just long enough to go back in and grab her, taking the fight across the mat. Velvet slams ODB’s face into the top turnbuckle and goes for even more shoulder blocks to the midsection. The Dirty Bitch rolls to the outside and Velvet stalks her from the other side, going for what looks like a flying something or other from the steps. However, ODB catches her and picks her up, slamming her back first into the ring post. Ugh. This match is killing me. The small of my back has been hurting for days. Anyway, both women roll to the floor but ODB gets up first, sliding Velvet into the ring. She does her best to kick the dirty creature away but she’s persistant and pulls Velvet up, dropping her back with a fallaway slam. And then, she slaps her own vagina….

Remember that ointment that was mentioned earlier? CVS called. They’ve got a full supply. They’d like you to be their first sponsor model. And since you’re unemployed and all…just saying.

After that(whatever it was), ODB picks Velvet up and blatantly chokes the shit out of her. I would seriously cut a bitch. Ya feel me?! But it doesn’t last long because that nasty, filthy drunk gets dropped with a rancid DDT. Velvet takes in a breath and drapes the arm. The referee makes the count and BAM! Velvet Sky has won this match for the sake of all clean females everywhere! HALLUHLOOYER!!

Thoughts: Two amazingly consistent matches, well, the second one was a beatdown but it was consistent! I enjoyed this week. It just tacked onto the majorly cray-cray shit we’ve been seeing for weeks now. It is a definite kick in the ass going into Slammiversary, however. I am dying to see how this match between Mickie and Angelina pans out. I don’t know who to choose! But I know it has to be a good match. But um..hello. Where the hell did the fire under Velvet’s ass come from?! Thinking on it, I’d be the same way if I had a hypocrite trying to beat my ass for the same shit she does. I mean, really, with all the trash talking. Have you looked in the mirror lately? I roll my eyes at you, ODB. Anyway, I must go. It is getting past my bedtime. Until next week, my lovies! xoxo
