SmackDown Redux (December 21st, 2010): What Happens On SmackDown Stays on SmackDown (and Should Never Happen Again!)

After a brutal tables match at TLC and a fun match on Raw complete with a heel turn twist, you’d think that on the live edition of Tuesday Night SmackDown, the great Diva match roll would continue on. You would think that after announcing a handicap match on Raw for SmackDown featuring Dolph Ziggler and Vickie Guerrero teaming up against Super John Cena that this week’s SmackDown would be the most epic SmackDown ever.

Oh it was epic alright. An epic fail.

Instead of greatness, we were forced to witness the complete violation of poor Vickie. Storyline continuation in the WORST way. And a reunion of sorts that the majority of the free world wishes wouldn’t have happened at all. With that kind of intro, you’re just begging to take a look at the action, aren’t you? Well sit back, grab some tissues, and get ready to weep. It truly is just that bad.

The first Diva sighting of the night involves Rose Mendes. She’s walking alongside Big Show Santa Claus and they’re handing out presents backstage. After Rosa says ‘Feliz Navidad’ to backstage worker and gives him a present, Hornswoggle pops into the picture. He has a toy bag over his head and when they pull it off, he is dressed like an elf. Of course he is. He places his hand on Rosa’s hip and the three of them continue to walk with the promise of more to come later.

Random Observations: Oh joy. I just can’t wait for more. On a more positive note, Rosa looks smoking hot tonight and her little Santa outfit is sexy! I wasn’t exactly a fan of the darker hair at first, but she’s working it tonight.

TLC in Review (December 19th, 2010): Divas Go Extreme and Look Fashionable While Doing So

A lot of people, myself included, were left flabbergasted when the mysterious Raw GM announced last Monday night that Michelle McCool and Layla would face off against Divas Champion, Natalya, and Beth Phoenix in the first ever Divas Tables Match at TLC. Lets face it, the WWE doesn’t exactly have a reputation for taking their girls seriously, and when this announcement was read I pretty much felt my jaw hit the ground from sheer and total shock. I quoted several times this week that this match had all the potential in the world, but it would end up being a total hit or miss. Thankfully for everyone involved, from the girls to the fans, the match was an absolute hit. Beth, Natalya, Layla, and Michelle made history last night and put their bodies on the line just to entertain the fans in the audience and those watching around the world. They proved that above all else they are wrestlers with just as much passion for the business as the people who bust their asses on the independent scene for years. Those people who write the Divas off just because they work for a company that only believes in giving them five minutes of airtime a week (max) that they’re not capable of putting together a truly good show. I really hope that everyone who watched the match or will watch will appreciate that the four ladies involved made the best use of their allotted time and did everything they could to make the match memorable.

It truly was one of the best Diva matches I’ve ever seen.

Former Divas Champions, Lay-Cool, are the first two to make their way to the ring. The Slammy award winners have their statues in their hands as they make their way to the ring. Both Michelle and Layla are sporting new ring gear and allow me to show my real wrestling fandom here; no doubt the top ring gear I’ve ever seen. Wow, both of those outfits are gorgeous. Anyway, moment over. Lay-Cool aren’t their usual confident selves as they go to the ring. They walk past several tables and Layla pretty much looks like she wants to cry. Michelle takes her hand and they finish walking together. As both members of Lay-Cool get on the apron, Layla declares that she doesn’t want to do the match at all. The cameras cut to highlights from SmackDown featuring what went down between all four women before cutting back to the ring. Michelle and Layla were seen having just watched the package and of course, that just got their emotions going again. They turned around and pointed to the pink table, crying about what could happen to them, when the Glamazon’s music started to play.

Extreme Makeover Gets ‘Best of 2010’ Nod by WWE

April’s Extreme Makeover Match between Beth Phoenix and Michelle McCool has been deemed one of the top 25 matches of 2010 by WWE.com. The match ranked #21 on the year-end list. See the countdown here. Thoughts: Perhaps a little premature as last night’s match definitely blew ‘Extreme Makeover’ out of the water. Nonetheless, congrats to … Read more

WWE TLC: Lay-Cool Laid Out in First Ever Divas Tag Team Tables Match

The holiday season isn’t getting off to a great start for Lay-Cool. The Diva duo were sent crashing through a table by Divas Champion, Natalya in the first ever Divas Tag Team Tables Match at TLC just moments ago. In an extremely entertaining match that saw multiple twists and turns, Lay-Cool were outsmarted by ‘Glama-Hart’, … Read more

PPV Predictions: WWE TLC 2010

Tonight will see the first ever Divas Tag Team Tables Match as Beth Phoenix and Natalya (Glama-Hart) team up to take on Lay-Cool. Who will be put through the table? And who will walk away with the victory? The DD team weigh in…

Cryssi: I expect a lot of shenanigans mixed with chaos in this match. The WWE picked the right four women to compete in this type of match. Natalya and Beth are brawlers, and Lay-Cool will have the comedy aspect down pat. Call me an optimist, but I expect this to be a beautiful match. Everyone will get a ‘spot’, but at the end of the night I fully expect to see Michelle McCool to go through a table with Layla slammed down on top of her giving Natalya and Beth Phoenix the victory. As far as after the match, that’s when things get fun. As the champ and the Glamazon celebrate, Melina runs out with a steel chair in hand and clocks Beth in the back, getting rid of her. Natalya is confused but she starts brawling with Melina. When the A-List Diva gets the upper-hand I expect her to ‘Last Call’ Natalya in the middle of the ring, set up a table, and send the Divas Champion through it. Heel turn completed.

David: Tonight’s Divas Tag Team Tables Match at TLC should be historic! If it was simply Divas Champion Natalya and a returning Beth Phoenix vs. resident bad girls Lay-Cool, that would be exciting enough for me. But add in a rich, interesting storyline (a rarity in WWE) and the hardcore stipulation, and these four girls have a great chance to wrestle a match we’ll remember for a long time. I am not sold on Beth’s friendship with Nattie; sure they might like each other but Nattie has something the Glamazon wants, the championship belt. I think Natalya and Beth Phoenix will defeat Lay-Cool tonight but then once the match is over Beth will slam Natalya through a table, sending her a message: in the end “gold and diamonds” really are a girl’s best friend.

Eric: There are two questions floating around in my head about this match. 1) Do both partners have to go through a table? 2) Is Beth even capable of a stunt like this? Does Layla even have the body mass to go through a table? While I am interested to see what WWE decides to do with the match, I don’t see any heel Beth/heel Melina swerves going on. I predict a short and sweet match. Look for Michelle to go through the table and look for Layla to be slammed on top of her. Natalya and Beth Phoenix will win. Maybe then Natalya will finally get a new challenger.

Diva Dirt’s Stars of the Week: Week of December 13th, 2010

It’s time to hand out some proverbial gold stars! Based on the week’s TV and news, each of the Diva Dirt team members have picked one female who they deem to be their ‘Star of the Week’. Read below…

April: I’m sure a lot of people would disagree but I think Michelle McCool finally got what she deserved. Diva of the Year is a worthy title for the former champion. She has been a staple in the WWE this past year and really secured herself in the Divas division. She is a major talent and I hope she continues on well into the future.

Cryssi: Despite nearly getting put through a table on SmackDown, Lay-Cool stand out as the Stars of the Week for me. Not only did they steal a Slammy win from a 105-year old woman, the ‘Cool’ part of the faction rightfully won the Diva of the Year Slammy by disposing of Diva’s Champion, Natalya, in a battle royal on Raw. Further more, Lay-Cool are going to step foot inside the ring on Sunday at TLC in the first ever Diva tables match. Whether they win or lose come Sunday, Lay-Cool are stars not just of the week, but of the whole year to be honest. Love them or hate them, they make you talk about them. And that is exactly what makes them the stars that they rightfully are.

David: My Star of the Week is Michelle McCool. She won the Diva’s battle royal on Monday Night Raw to officially be named “2010 Diva of the Year”, an honor I feel she deserved whether she won that battle royal or not. McCool was front and center of the Divas division all year and held the championship multiple times. Maybe the WWE had her win a battle royal because they knew fans wouldn’t vote for her. Whatever the reason, her win this past Monday night cemented a great year in her career. I would also like to hand out a second star of the week, this one to Allison Danger, as she was named the president of a new female wrestling promotion, Pro-Wrestling SUN. Congratulations and best wishes to her as she spearheads another great opportunity for fans to cheer the hard-working women in professional wrestling!

SmackDown Redux (December 17th, 2010): Natalya and Beth Send A Message

With TLC just mere days away, the Divas of the WWE were getting into the pay-per-view spirit on this Friday’s rendition of SmackDown. Michelle McCool, Layla, Beth Phoenix, and Diva’s Champion, Natalya, put together a nice little segment that built up their Sunday night showdown pretty darn well. Elsewhere, Kelly Kelly found a new potential soulmate in the form of a six foot six, dreamy blue eyed Scottish lad by the name of Drew McIntyre. Unfortunately for Drew, Kaitlyn the cockblocker showed up and ruined his chances of scoring a date with the WWE’s Barbie girl, but there’s always next week, right?!

Lay-Cool were walking to the ring when SmackDown returned from a commercial break, which set up the most important part of the show in my humble opinion. The two-time Slammy award winning duo were dressed in matching outfits and wore matching expressions of irritation on their faces. They had microphones and Michelle started us off. She said that what we were witnessing was the official protest of the Diva’s tables match at TLC this Sunday. She said that the match was not going to happen and Layla said that the match was completely barbaric. Michelle agreed and then Layla asked the crowd who in their right mind would want to see them go through a table? The crowd cheered which did nothing but piss off Lay-Cool. Michelle began to rant that no one seemed to understand what “diva” was. She said the crowd knew nothing about it and that the girls in the back knew nothing about it as well. Layla spoke up and said that being diva meant being flawless, and both Michelle and Layla gestured to themselves. Michelle declared that the table match at TLC was off and they stood their ground as Natalya’s music starting blaring across the PA system.

Raw Redux (December 13th, 2010): Lay-Cool are Slammy Queens

This week Raw hosted The Slammys, the night the Superstars and Divas wait all year for. After last year’s upset win by Maria in the category of ‘Diva of the Year, how could WWE top that? That’s right, a battle royal! But first, BFFs Lay-Cool won the “Knucklehead Moment of the Year award”. Check out their acceptance speech and the match below:

Let’s kick things off with the award. To be honest, it was more of the same from Lay-Cool in this segment. I would really love to see some kind of change in Lay-Cool in the new year, because this ‘Mean Girls’ schtick is really being run into the ground. It was amusing at for a while, but like most things in WWE, it’s being overdone at this point. Also, I thought it was very fitting that Layla accepted this award, as she’s the personality of this tandem. After making their speech, Lay-Cool says their about to win another Slammy and head to the ring for the battle royal.

SmackDown Redux (December 10th, 2010): Lay-Cool Humbled. For Now.

So this week on WWE television we were treated to a double dose of Lay-Cool (Layla and Michelle McCool for those of you who are new to WWE wrestling…) as the former co-Diva Champions appear on Raw and their home show, SmackDown. On Raw, we were privy to their innermost thoughts as they joined the team of Jerry “The King” Lawler, Josh Matthews, and CM (God) Punk for commentary. Post Natalya/Melina match, Lay-Cool treated the champ to a beatdown. Typical Lay-Cool, eh? Well on SmackDown, Natalya made sure the same fate didn’t await her as she took on Layla in a singles match. The hot Canadian Diva brought a partner down to the ring with her.

Beth Phoenix, the Glamazon. Lets take a look at what went down.

Lay-Cool head to the ring first and can I just break kayfabe here for one second and say, my damn Michelle looks fierce tonight?! At times, she truly does put other women to shame. But anyway, Lay-Cool are walking to the ring and up on the Titan Tron a video package highlighting what went down between Lay-Cool and Natalya at the conclusion of Monday’s match against Melina started to play. Lay-Cool were quite proud of their actions and Layla even started to stroke her imaginary beard as the girls got settled inside the ring. Natalya’s music hits and the WWE Diva’s Champion makes her way onto the stage. She pauses and smiles (while she wears my favorite outfit of hers) and she looks down at the ring. That smile gets even brighter when Natalya’s music fades and the Glamazon’s music hits. Beth walks out and joins Natalya, much to the chagrin of Lay-Cool, and both blonde beauties walk down to the ring.

Survivor Series in Review: A Dream Becomes Reality for Nattie, Plus the Glamazon Strikes Back

Last night’s Survivor Series 2010 marked the third meeting between Co-Divas Champions, Lay-Cool and the third generation Diva, Natalya. Natalya has faced off against both members of Lay-Cool individually and came up short, but last night the odds were stacked even more against. This time she’d have to face both members in a 2-on-1 handicap match. Can the first lady of The Hart Dynasty take out the BFF champions to become the first ever third generation Divas Champion? Check out the match below:

Out first are the Co-Divas Champions and Michelle McCool is looking stunning in a copper variation of her usual ring gear. Layla… not so much. I don’t know what it is about Divas and mixing neon colors and weird prints, but it never looks good and this was no exception. I’m usually a big fan of Layla’s choices in ring gear, but this was a definite miss for her.

Introducing A Londoner’s Eye (Issue #1) – Beth Phoenix: A Lady Amongst Divas

Hello one and all! Welcome to a new column, ‘A Londoner’s Eye’ here at Diva Dirt piggybacking building off of the success of David’s wonderful column. I always get emails and questions about my opinion on this, that and the other and as you all know by now, I am highly opinionated on pretty much everything, so this new column will be a notebook of sorts which I hope to regularly update with my thoughts on what’s going on in the world of women’s wrestling. There likely won’t be any regaling tales from my childhood, though — I’ll leave that to David.

However, this first column does have some connection to our self-professed Mr Glamazon, as you can probably guess by the title. This one is all about a certain glamorous amazon, who like her name suggests, we are all eagerly awaiting to rise from the ashes in the coming days or weeks.

I admire Beth Phoenix for a number of reasons: her determination and passion for the industry, to me, shines through. She had a long journey to get to WWE and now she’s living her dream and seems like she doesn’t take it for granted one bit. Then there’s her striking physique. Furthermore Beth, in my opinion, fits perfectly into WWE’s PG era along with the likes of John Cena, because she’s a great role model regardless of whether she’s a babyface or heel.

As a babyface, she’s able to connect with her fans and be that role model a little more, but even as a heel Beth was always smart, savvy and headstrong — attributes that women and young girls can look up to. Beth has made her character come across elegant — even though she slams girls into the mat — and you’d never dream to hear the word ‘whore’ come out of this Diva’s mouth. No sir. Leave that to the Knockouts. Though we’d love to have seen Beth tussle with the likes of Trish, Lita, Victoria et al, somehow I’ve always felt she fits much better into this era than the last. Though the Divas then didn’t curse as much as the Knockouts, they were pretty sexually suggestive and explicit themselves. Beth Phoenix, the elegant, graceful, Parents Television Council-friendly Glamazon wouldn’t have worked quite as well as it does now.

Yet for all the praise I have heaped on Beth in that last paragraph, I haven’t always been so enamored with Beth.

Trick or Treat! Going Halloween Costume Shopping: Divas Edition

For the past two years around Halloween, (view 2008 and part 1, part 2, and part 3 of 2009) we’ve suggested some tongue-in-cheek costumes for Divas and Knockouts. This year, we continue the tradition. We started with the NXT rookies, and followed with the Knockouts. Now, finally, it’s time for the Divas to get costumed. Enjoy, and be sure to vote for your favorite below!

Alicia Fox
Costume: Foxy Cleopatra to Santino’s Austin Powers.
Why?: Diva Dirt’s not one to pass up some wordplay, and Miss Foxy Alicia certainly lends herself to be called Foxy Cleopatra. She definitely rivals Beyonce for her fantastic figure, and her self-assuredness lends itself to playing the secret agent who’s constantly introducing herself as “a whole lotta woman!”. Seeing her dolled up 60s-style with a bright jumpsuit, prop gun, and afro while Santino goes appropriately over-the-top as Austin Powers would be a funny sight. Hey, if anyone’s got to be paired with Santino, it might as well be a Diva who can keep him in line.
Get the look: Get the outfit and the hairdo.

Beth Phoenix
Costume: A zombie.
Why?: She’s back from the dead injury! Beth is unstoppable, evidenced by her return, and is ready to take out anyone who stands in her way. Like an undead zombie, she rises from apparent defeat, hungry (in Beth’s case, for victory). What better way to scare the life out of her fellow Divas than to make her return as if from the grave, skin rotting, eyes lifeless, bloodthirsty attitude? It’s hard to think of a Diva more intimidating, but zombie Beth just might surpass the living one.
Get the look: Go in-depth with these tutorial videos.

Eve Torres, Gail Kim, & Kelly Kelly
Costume: Modern-day Charlie’s Angels
Why?: Taking a cue from the modern “Charlie’s Angels” movies, these babyface Divas would be matched up to their counterparts easily. Eve would be the spunky Dylan (as played by Drew Barrymore), Gail would be the serious Alex (as played by Lucy Liu), and Kelly would be the free-spirited Natalie (as played by Cameron Diaz). Striking the signature pose, these Divas would make for a convincing double of that trio, and the WWE could fill their Hornswoggle quota by pairing him with the angels as Bosley. Your standard 6-Diva tag team match would never be the same!
Get the look: Find two friends, assume the specific personalities, and prepare to kick ass, wire-fighting style. Be sure to wear clothes that best fit your angel (tomboyish for Dylan, dark and sleek for Alex, sexy and girly for Natalie).

Read on to see more costume suggestions.

Mr. Glamazon’s Hitting the Ropes – Issue #7

Thanks to several readers I have decided to join a Beth Phoenix self-help group.   I didn’t realize I needed professional help, but after reading some of the comments from my last column, my eyes have been opened a bit.  For example, Agent E suggested I was suffering from “too much Glamazon love” and even called me creepy!  Jennifer L134 suggested I check out AA.  Ouch!  Who knew I had this problem?  Who knew these types of problems even existed?  I mean, I save every Beth match on DVD, I call my daughter the Glamazon, and I back flip into my office cube every morning, but is this an actual medical problem?  That’s preposterous…ummm…right?

Maybe, maybe not.  But the comments of some readers pointed out to me (albeit in a playful way) I should examine this a little closer.  Truthfully, I have probably been in denial for quite some time.  For starters, I guess I shouldn’t check every day to see if Smackdown is coming to DC so I can pre-order tickets.  And I guess I shouldn’t walk around with a women’s title belt raised above my head.  (I could go on and on, but in the interest of time, I’ll stop there.)  So I thank the readers for helping push me forward.  In some ways I’m starting to feel like I belong in the Straight Edge Society because my eyes have now been opened.  Actually, I thought about cutting my hair, buying a Punk T-shirt, and going completely “straight edge”…but then I realized something.  I could give up drinking.  I don’t smoke or use “prescription medication” (God Punk is a great promo).  But I can’t be “straight edge” for one very big reason – I am much, much, much too vain.  Nobody is shaving or cutting anything on this money maker.  The hair…it stays.

Side note – I always have my hair cut by a hot chick.  Just a quirk of mine.  I find a beautiful hairstylist and I stay with her.  It is a deep and meaningful relationship is some ways.  There’s lots of chit-chat, lots of head rubbing, and I always leave happy.  The only difference between her and my wife is the money exchanged.  (Joke alert!  Thank you, thank you….I’ll be here all week.)  First there was Tina.  She got me through high school and college.  God I miss Tina.  Then I moved to DC and was in a tailspin for about 12 months, bouncing from one barber to another.  I hit all the ones in Northern VA looking for my new girl.  I thought I found the right one…Brenda…but then she tried to set me up with her sister.  That went horrible wrong, mainly b/c there was little family resemblance…if you know what I mean.  Plus her sister’s name was Wanda…that didn’t work for me.  It was my one and only blind date.  And yes I can be that shallow.  Cut me a break, I was 24.
