Mia Yim Does Japan: Blog and Pictures from Match with Manami Toyota

Wrestler and Diva Dirt contributor, Mia Yim is currently in Japan where she is set to debut for the REINA promotion. Mia will be sending us exclusive blogs and pictures from her trip. Check back for regular updates!

Ahyong all!

If you have a problem with how I spell Ahnyong, get over it ^.^ Anyways, it is now Sunday. The day after my big tag match with Aki Kambayashi against Hailey Hatred and Manami Toyota. I will be coming home Weds with two losses in Japan, but with the greatest experience of my career thus far. This match was TOUGH! Much respect to all three of those ladies, they can really give their all. I took some stiff kicks from Hailey, got my butt handed to me on a silver platter by Toyota. I don’t mind the losses, I am just happy to have walked away from two incredible matches in Japan. Looking at Toyota across the ring before the bell rang felt like a dream. The lights only on us. Streamers getting cleaned up by our feet (Yes, I got streamers for the first time!!! Love the Japanese fans!) It was simply unbelievable and indescribable. Two years ago, I would only imagine and day dream about wrestling in Japan, asking myself “I wonder what it would be like over here..” and now I can say, “Oh, wrestling in Japan is TOUGH! But I enjoy every minute”. The blood, sweat, and tears of two hard working years and this is the pay off. Forget getting glammed up for TV. Forget winning a belt from a box. This trip to Japan was the payoff. I thank god, my family, my friends, and all of you supporters for spreading my name, cheering (or booing) me, getting behind me. THANK YOU!

Ahnyong all!

It is 8:43am here in Japan (7:43pm in East Coast US time) and typing this in bed. I am so sore! I just had my match with Hiroyo Matsumoto last night, and I think it was my most proudest match yet. It was such an experience to wrestle her. I lost and took a butt whooping, but I guess I’m just good at that according to Melanie ^.^

Mia Yim Does Japan: The Story So Far…

Wrestler and Diva Dirt contributor, Mia Yim is currently in Japan where she is set to debut for the REINA promotion. Mia will be sending us exclusive blogs and pictures from her trip. Check back for regular updates!

I finally land at the Narita airport May 12 (Thurs here) after a 16 hour flight. The flight itself wasn’t that bad, No crying babies or smelly old people. Decent, enjoyable trip. Once I land, it is already raining here, but I met up with the promoter and wait in the car. About 15 mins later, the promoter brings Roxie Cotton, and we both are just jumping in the back seat, excited as can be. We drive about an hour into the outskirts of the city of Tokyo called Chiba. We stop at the dojo to meet with the joshi girls and lucha girls. After ten mins there, we head to our apartment. Super cute little place. We both have our own bedrooms. Comfortable place, hard to understand how to work the stove and toilet. They are built completely different with different buttons. After settling in for about an hour, we both go out and meet up with Hailey Hatred. I haven’t seen her in about a year or two after she left America to live in Tokyo. It was great seeing her! She takes us into the city and shows us around. We later meet up with Kellie Skater and eat at a Denny’s. This Denny’s is totally different than the American Denny’s. Pancakes here are considered a dessert, and they barely serve any breakfast foods, more Japanese soups and meats. Once we finish eating, it’s about 10pm and both me and Roxie are exhausted. Still jetlagged. We finally take the train back to the apartment and pass out.

Jackie Haas is Tough Enough: Week 2 (“Five for Flinching”)

Jackie injured her knee in training but had the courage to not quit. She ended up winning TE2.

Time to get ‘Tough’…

When it comes down to being a WWE Superstar, Trish hit the nail right on the head with the last contestant cut, Matt. The spotlight was on and he was in the dark. In my opinion, contrary to those of many others, I could not agree more with the decision to cut him. Matt has tremendous skill level and has great athletic ability but when you do nothing but complete the moves? That’s not what this competition is for. I believe it’s for the exact opposite.

For someone who has been in the ring for nearly a decade, he was told point blank it was time to shine and fell flat; in fact, he was overshadowed. You can teach someone the moves but you have to have an inner charisma that is able to shine and overtake within the WWE. Matt has been on the indy circuit for too long not be able to take Luke by the “balls” and showboat. When it’s your time to shine and you don’t deliver, there is not enough time in this competition to “play it safe” and “wait for your time.” Your time will come when you least expect it; personally, if I were to do it over again, there were so many things that I would have done so differently to make sure I captured every moment but hindsight is 20/20 (that and I chalk it up to being so young and having no real concept of what I had gotten myself into!). He had ample chance to show himself, even up to the last few moments of the show with Stone Cold in his face waiting for him to “man up.” Cricket, cricket, cricket… so cliché in this business.

A cricket does not equal WWE Superstar.

Jackie auditions for Tough Enough 2

And so it begins… all over again. First off, I cannot thank all those at Diva-Dirt.com for the weekly opportunity to express my thoughts on the latest rendition of Tough Enough! I also want to wish each and every one of the contestants the best of luck with this endeavor and hope that they really enjoy the ride because it happens in a blink of an eye and is one hell of a roller coaster ride!

I encourage all of you who are following the show – and just the avid wrestling fans that you are – to comment on your thoughts about the series being “revived,” as without fan appreciation, where would the world of pro wrestling be?

Happy Valentine’s! Diva Dirt’s Favorite Wrestling Couples (Part 1)

Boy meets girl. Boy falls in love with girl. Boy smashes other boy over the head to defend girl’s honor. Okay, so it’s hardly the stuff of fairytales, but wrestling couples have made us laugh, have made us cry and they’ve also made us scream ‘WTF?’ at the screen. This Valentine’s Day, we pay homage to some of our favorite on-screen wrestling couples! And as always, we encourage to share yours in the comments too!

MISS ELIZABETH & ‘MACHO MAN’ RANDY SAVAGE
If there was ever a professional wrestling couple that personified the motto ‘overcoming the odds’ it would be the diabolical and charismatic Randy Savage and his beautiful long-time manager/partner, the stoic and regal, Miss Elizabeth. Their relationship was far from easy. Savage constantly overshadowed Elizabeth and sometimes, he wasn’t the best person to be around. The two endured several obstacles including George “The Animal” Steele’s obsession with Elizabeth, her slightly innocent flirtation with Hulk Hogan, and at one point, Savage even sent Elizabeth packing in favor of “Sensational” Sherri Martel. But in the end, love would eventually triumph. After losing a retirement match at WrestleMania VII to the Ultimate Warrior, Savage was attacked by Sherri for the fact he lost. Miss Elizabeth came out of her seat from ringside and got physical, pulling Sherri off her man, and reuniting wrestling’s most beloved couple. The reunion would culminate in the greatest wrestling wedding of all time, “The Match Made in Heaven” at SummerSlam 1991. Despite having their wedding go off without a hitch, the reception was ultimately ruined thanks to a gift containing a live snake courtesy of Jake ‘The Snake’ Roberts. Perhaps it was an omen. Because after the wedding, Savage and Elizabeth were never really the same. An angle with Ric Flair followed and eventually, Elizabeth left the then-WWF. Little did we know that the real-life relationship between the two had come to an end as well. Savage issued a statement that WWF Magazine printed saying the he and Elizabeth were no longer involved in each other’s lives and the book officially closed on the storybook romance of wrestling’s most semi-heroic, flamboyant, sorta-villian and the beautiful, shy, and soft-spoken girl next door.

A Pocket Volcano’s Eruption (Issue #1) – An Ode to a Scream Queen

Greetings and salutations everyone! When the offer was made to Diva Dirt’s team members to come up with their own articles, I hopped on this bandwagon. I love to write, and what better way to share my thoughts and opinions on female wrestling? (The title of my articles came from a friend – he thinks of me as a volcano and this sprung to mind. I like it!) I struggled to come up with a subject for my first column, and it struck me whilst watching a match on SHIMMER Volume 14. I’m going to take this opportunity to fully expound on exactly why I idolize one wrestler in particular.

My number one is a peculiar choice, as there are others who are more technically skilled in the ring (as she, herself, would most likely agree), or others whose resume is filled with accolades and belts. However, this woman grabbed my attention the very first time I saw her on my television. I’ve followed her career through its ups and downs, its highs and lows. Her perseverance and good spirit is refreshing in a business that can chew you up and spit you out. Who is this lady? Read on…

Impact Write-Up (November 25, 2010): It’s a Thanksgiving Miracle! Sarita Stuns the Champ

Last night’s Impact had a smorgasboard of Knockouts all over the place! Apparently the holiday spirit hadn’t infected these ladies just yet as they were all set on beating the hell outta each other. Which made for some great television! Find out what happened below…

Backstage, we see Angelina Love and Velvet Sky chattering by a food table, discussing their individual action figures, which are in their hands. Ric Flair walks up, inviting them both to Fortune/Immortal’s Thanksgiving party. He promised the guys he’d bring back candy (I’d be pulling out the mace at that point…) and Angelina grins, saying, “Eye candy?” They seem to be interested, when Mickie James walks up, wanting to speak to Angelina. She extends a hand, thanking the blonde for a great match last week. Velvet interrupts, putting her hands over Angelina’s ears, singing. Mickie gives her a look, “What are you, 12?” In response, Angelina holds up her action figure, extends the tiny hand, and says, “Talk to the hand.”

TNA Xplosion Watch (November 24, 2010): When Former Partners Collide

On this week’s TNA Xplosion, we see another collision between former tag team partners Sarita and Taylor Wilde. The former has been on a winning streak as of late, can she continue it? Or will one half of the current tag team champions stop Sarita cold? Find out below…

First out is Sarita, in an orange, blue and black outfit. Looks good on her. Cocky as ever, she makes her way into the ring. Next out is Taylor Wilde and she’s ditched the skirt and skimpy bikini top in favor of more proper looking gear coloured blue and yellow. Nice!

Impact Write-Up (November 18, 2010): The Beautiful People No Match for Hardcore Country & Jersey

We had more Knockouts action tonight than you could shake a stick at! (Although why you’d want to shake a stick at them is beyond me…) Let’s dive right in, shall we?

Prior to their match, we see Generation Me walking towards the entrance backstage when Tara comes up and wishes them luck. She makes sure they know she’ll be watching VERY closely, emphasizing this with a smack to not just one but both men’s backsides. Woo, you go Tara!

Switching gears to the ring, it’s going to be a mixed tag team match pitting Jay Lethal, the Motor City Machine Guns and Velvet Sky vs Generation Me, Robbie E and Cookie. For a minute, I think something’s wrong with Cookie’s eyes until I realize she has extended blue eyelashes on. Oookay. Last out is Velvet, in her pink attire. As she enters the ring, Sabin takes a seat and puts all his focus on her as Tazz and Tenay make mention of those two dating. Even Jay has a grin on his face. Perhaps he’s thinking he finally has found an equalizer in his fight against Robbie and Cookie.

WWE Superstars Redux (November 18, 2010): The Return of Gailina

For the Superstars main event last night, we had the Divas taking center stage! It was be the team of Gail Kim and Melina taking on Alicia Fox and Maryse. Can Galina prevail, or will the Fox and the Minx get the win?

Out first is Melina in a blue attire, and we have the awesomely awesome CM Punk on commentary. I approve. But here we fade to commercial, and when we return, Gail Kim is already in the ring, chatting with Melina. She’s in her usual gear, white coloured this time, and it looks very nice on her. Last out are Alicia Fox (in her black WrestleMania gear) and Maryse (also in black). We’re starting out with Melina and Alicia. The two lockup and Melina hits a nice split leg armdrag, followed by a dropkick. Alicia’s in the ropes, so Melina hits her running knee strike to the back and goes for a pin. The ref counts two.

Melina hauls Alicia to her feet and backs into her corner, allowing Gail to tag herself in. Melina hits a snapmare, Gail hits a nice dropkick and goes for another pin, this time only getting one.

Impact Write-Up (November 11, 2010): Jersey Knows How to Fight… and Run

Coming off the heels of one hell of a brawl at TNA Turning Point, one would assume that the powers that be would continue to build the feud between Mickie James and Tara, leading up to another action-packed match. Right? Right? Think again, this is TNA we’re talking about. It should be TMNS – Totally Makes No Sense. Last night, we received no follow up, no segments, no interaction between the two. What we did get is a mixed tag match that follows up on the feud between Jay Lethal and Robbie E. Jay has recuited one half of the TNA Knockout Tag Champions, Taylor Wilde to be his partner against Robbie E and Cookie. Can the Jersey kids keep the party going or will it be canceled?

Prior to the match, we see Robbie E and Cookie walking towards the stage. Cookie is trying to talk to Robbie about said match, but he’s too busy admiring the X-Division Championship belt. As they near the camera, Cookie has a message for Taylor. “I may not be a wrestler, but I’m from Jersey – I know how to fight!” (Must be a Jersey thing…) She tells Robbie she’s going to make him proud of her tonight.

Back from commercial, out first is Jay Lethal and Taylor Wilde, her tag belt around her waist. (Wasn’t there some kind of rule that said you had to defend your belt before 30 days were up or you were stripped? Oh wait, that would require continuity…) Whoever does the women’s makeup in TNA ought to be fired. Taylor’s sporting a blue top and skirt instead of silver, which looks lovely on her, but the makeup is horrid. It’s unnecessary how they cake it on. Her hair looks cute though, flipped up on the edges.

Next out is Robbie E and Cookie, but looks like Cookie’s having second thoughts. She’s screaming at Robbie, who’s paying her no attention, too absorbed in the belt he’s carrying. She’s sporting an outfit that looks more suited to clubbing, not wrestling, huge boots with fishnets and those huge hoop earrings are a hazard in this environment. Robbie gets into the ring, celebrating with the belt, but Cookie remains on the outside, waving at Robbie, refusing to get in the ring. Only when the referee starts counting her out and Rob yells at her to get in the ring, does she scurry between the ropes, still pouting. Fade to commercial.

TNA Turning Point in Review: Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, I Wanna Start a Fight!

Billed as a match that had it’s roots in the company they both formerly worked for, last night saw a grudge match between Tara and Mickie James.. At first, it felt like Mickie would simply have to go through Tara to get a shot at the Knockouts Championship, but this feud has taken on a life of it’s own. Each woman is eager to get their hands on the other. So who would come out victorious?

Prior to the match, backstage we see Christy Hemme with Mickie James. It’s a short promo but MJ gets straight to the point. She admits there might’ve been mutual dislike between the two in the WWE, but no matter what, she says that Tara “will respect me.” There’s a gleam in her eyes as she glares at the camera before stalking off.

JB announces Tara being accompanied to the ring by Madison Rayne, but as Tara rides out on her bike, she’s going solo. (JB must’ve had a tad bit of the hair o’ the dog…) She’s sporting boots, fishnets, and a ripped t-shirt and frankly I’m hard pressed to make sense out of this outfit. It looks trashy to be honest. However, I adore the red streaks in her hair so I’ll overlook the outfit. Next out is Mickie James and I vastly prefer her new gear over the cut off shorts and tied shirt. Her outfit tonight is a blue top like she used to wear in the WWE, plus pants that have cowboy chaps on them. She should’ve taken the chaps off, but on the whole it’s a big improvement.

The Women of Tough Enough: Where Are They Now? (Part 2)

Lee Burton returns with the second part of his look at the women of Tough Enough, this time focusing on the best of the rest. Click here to read part one.

In the original part of this look back of The Women of Tough Enough, we checked out the three winners – Nidia Guenard, Linda Miles and Jackie Gayda Haas. In this concluding part, we should take a peek at some of the other contestants who ended up in the biz, as well as the applicants who didn’t make it into the house but still forged a career in wrestling anyway.

So let’s go through it season by season…

Tough Enough 1
As mentioned in the previous article, Nidia won the original season after being picked over her only other real competition, Taylor Matheny (now 30). At the finale, Taylor promised that she wouldn’t quit her dream of making it as a wrestler, and stuck to her promise… at first.

Taylor was a salty character on Tough Enough. Participating in the show at the disapproval of her parents and being very focused on the prize at the end, she pushed herself in the ring and was dedicated to learning the craft. However, things went south when the remaining contestants went on the road with Al Snow, as she got utterly hammered in a bar and was very delicate the next day. If anything, this might have been an indicator to the WWF that she had pangs of irresponsibility and had some growing up to do. If anything, Taylor wanted it TOO much.

Nobody could doubt her desire though – as evidenced on the final live episode where she looked utterly crushed when Nidia was announced as the victor.

After TE1 ended, Matheny wrestled dates in the US, Canada and Japan (most notably with the celebrated ARSION promotion), defeating the likes of Cheerleader Melissa along the way, and tangling with the likes of SHIMMER co-founder Allison Danger, earning her a 3rd runner-up spot in the Pro Wrestling Illustrated Rookie of the Year rankings. The problem was that by the time she had earned that honour, Taylor was starting to wind down as a wrestler.

In 2004, Matheny quit wrestling to take up a course studying Hollywood make-up, though she did appear in the Florida promotion Full Impact Pro in a special guest appearance with her then-boyfriend, now-husband. His name: Brian Kendrick.

Yes, THE Brian Kendrick – the one who held the WWE Tag Team Championship for a year and currently plies his craft in TNA. Even after removing herself from wrestling, Taylor’s still associated with it, thanks to her marijuana-loving beau.

Impact Write-Up (November 4, 2010): Knockouts, Knockouts Everywhere

Heading into Sunday’s “Turning Point” pay-per-view, we had plenty of action featuring the Knockouts last night. Let’s get right into it, shall we?

The first match will feature Sarita taking on Velvet Sky, but before we get to that, we see both members of the Beautiful People in the back. Angelina and Velvet are primping in the mirror, chatting as Vel Vel gets ready for her match. Surprising me, she tells Angelina she wants to do this on her own without any back-up. Angel doesn’t take offense, sending her off with a hug and words of encouragement. Sky leaves…which signals the appearance of the mysterious Winter in the mirror. Angelina calls her a “creeper” (LOL!) and wants to know what she’s doing there. Winter tells her quietly she doesn’t have to worry, “I won’t leave you. You’ll never have to be alone again.” At which point, Love says she likes being alone and makes her escape. The camera pans back to the mirror – empty.

Musings: Creepy! Still loving it, still interested. I could listen to Kat speak for hours, her voice is so soft and pretty. Maybe it’s my partiality for accents, I’m not sure. I also liked the fact Velvet wanted to go it alone against Sarita. I take it as a sign she doesn’t want to rely overly much on Angelina’s assistance in her solo matches, which is a good point. Both women are strong characters on their own, they don’t need to have tag matches all the time.
