Slammiversary in Review (June 13th, 2010): A Miscarriage Of Justice Doesn’t Even Begin To Describe This

It’s the night of Slammiversary and all through the world, wrestling fans  are waiting, shaking in anticipation. It’s the biggest night for TNA, their anniversary. The granddaddy of them all for the little Orlando company that has kept on chugging for the past eight years. When most ragtime, no name, mediocre companies would have folded, TNA has truly stood the test of time. That speaks volume about their resiliency and their efforts to make their company better…

My God. I sound like a TNA supporter.

Let me start over. Tonight was TNA’s version of Summerslam (since it’s not Wrestlemania apparently), Slammiversary. How the company has managed to survive this long is beyond me, but nonetheless, it’s made it this long and they decided to oblige us Knockout fans with an absolutely scorching hot contest for the Knockouts Championship featuring Madison Rayne, the champ, against the babyface challenger, Roxxi. I would love to sit here and act all excited for the match, but I’m really not. TNA did absolutely nothing to build up this match and this past Thursday on Impact the title match wasn’t even mentioned. The lack of hype for this Knockouts title match has left a lot of fans frigid, including yours truly, and put an immense amount of unfair pressure on Madison and Roxxi to perform. Whether or not they can live up to those expectations remained to be seen. Personally, I didn’t have high hopes. Did you?

As it turns out, I was absolutely right to not have high hopes. What happened tonight was an absolute travesty. It was a miscarriage of justice. It was the biggest crime committed since OJ Simpson walked away a free man thanks to Kim Kardashian’s father (… and some other old guys). Roxxi, as far as we know, is now gone from TNA and it’s total bullshit if you want my honest opinion. I’ve never in my life been more disgusted with a single television program in my entire life. I find it completely laughable that Eric Bischoff went on record this week saying the Knockouts division was a staple of the company. It’s not an absolute farce and I’m ready to give up on it. There’s really nothing else I can say. For those of you who spared yourselves from watching, I commend you. Lets just get on with it.

Roxxi is out first and thank God she is in a new outfit tonight. It’s not that pretty and it’s certainly not that flashy, but it’s not a gross brown color. It’s a nice red ensemble etched with a bit of gold. As Roxxi comes to the ring, the feed cuts to a highlight of Roxxi beating Madison a few weeks ago in a non-title match, which is basically how she earned this chance tonight. After that, Madison walks out solo and she’s dressed in this little pink skirt and a black top. It’s interesting to me that she’s alone, and I respect that. It makes me wonder if the Beautiful People will end up getting involved towards the end. The champ gets into the ring and does her usual thing, while Roxxi stands back and watches, focused on her match and highly unimpressed by Madison’s sexy antics. Madison is looking so confident, totally ready for this match and she hands the title over to the referee who sports a nifty bow-tie. Cool.

Scrapped Knockouts Match Airs on International Impact (Full Match Report)

Diva Dirt reader, David Myles wrote in to tell us that a match scrapped from this past Thursday’s episode of Impact has aired internationally, particularly in Australia and the UK.

The match pit #1 Contender Roxxi and newcomer Rosie Lottalove against The Beautiful People’s Lacey Von Erich and Velvet Sky on the go-home show before tonight’s Slammiversary pay per view.

The Motor City Machine Guns came down on commetary, Roxxi’s music played and her and Rosie made their way to the ring in a pretty funny entrance. (Roxxi again wearing the brown outfit). The guns are horrified they have to be on commetary watching Rosie just to get on TV, but they call her ‘hot’ nonetheless. They replay the events from last week with Madison and Rosie. The opponents Velvet and Lacey enter (sans Madison Rayne), and the Guns compare entrances of Rosie and TBP. A few fat jokes and we get to the match.

Rosie starts off against Velvet, Velvet mocks Rosie by shaking her ‘thang’, to which Rosie shakes her own. Velvet charges and gets knocked down by Rosie before tagging in Lacey, who also mocks Rosie by walking in with her arms outstretched (a la trish mocking ‘fat’ lita), before shoving Rosie, who doesn’t move, Rosie shoves Lacey back and sends her into next week.

Lacey composes herself before attempting to bodyslam Rosie (yep…) even with Velvet’s encouragement she fails to lift Rosie, and Rosie easily slams Lacey before tagging in Roxxi who hits a sloppy dropkick on LVE, before Lacey tags in Velvet. Velvet charges and is dropped with a drop toe hold, she grabs Vel Vel with an arm wrench before allowing Rosie to tag herself in (after being slightly out of reach and missing the first tag attempt ~lulz) Rosie hits a standing axe-handle to Velvet before continuing to work over the arm. Roxxi (for some reason) is trying to get into the ring or around to Lacey, but anyway, manages to accidently distract the referee, allowing Velvet to pull Rosie’s hair and get her in position for LVE to hit her across the back of the leg with the infrequently seen ‘ugly stick’. Rosie sells it like she had been shot in the leg, and Lacey tags in and hits a double team ‘wish bone’ on Rosie, Lacey works over the leg before tagging Velvet back in.

Mr. Glamazon’s Hitting the Ropes – Issue #9

EXCUSE ME!  I said EXCUSE ME!!  It’s time for some “Real Talk”!  This week I am turning in my tiara for a full-zip custom hoodie…and I gotta admit, I’m pretty fired up.  I’ve wanted to write about Lay-Cool for a while now but I keep getting distracted.  First by Beth’s knee injury.  Then by my sudden fascination with the Bellas.  Then by my favorite French Canadian Maryse (I’m proud of that column by the way.  It only took me 2,300 words to prove that Maryse is “hot”.  I know, impressive.)  But no more.  Now is the time.  Now is the time for me to write about one of my favorite tag teams ever.   Honestly, I haven’t enjoyed a tag team, male or female, this much since the Hart Foundation broke out the pink and black almost 25 years ago.  (Seriously…go back and watch WrestleMania 3 and tell me if you ever saw a cooler tag team.)

First off, let’s get this out of the way – some of you might not think Layla and Michelle are officially a “tag team” because the WWE doesn’t have an official women’s tag team division.  Well, I think you’re wrong.  I think Lay-Cool can be classified as a traditional tag team because they meet the required criteria, as defined by yours truly…and in this case I am the judge, the jury, and the executioner (no, not THE Executioner who lost to Tito Santana in the first WrestleMania.)  Trivia time: What big name grappler played the Executioner that night?  Did you know it was that Executioner’s only WWF appearance (and it happened at WM?!? WTF?!?).  It also led to one of my all-time favorite Gorilla Monsoon lines: “I don’t know much about this particular Executioner.”  There were others he DID know a lot about???  God I loved the Gorilla.  My favorite Monsoon expression ever?  Every time Nikolai Volkoff would wrestle Gorilla would say “the Big Russian doesn’t have a clue how strong he is”, usually right before Volkoff got pinned.  Killed me every time.  In Gorilla’s honor I have a framed Volkoff signature in my basement and I know all the words to the Soviet National Anthem.  “Mr. Glamazon requests that you all rise and respect his singing of the Soviet…National…Anthem.”  Boooo!  USA! USA! USA!  I would make a great heel.

SmackDown Redux (June 11th, 2010): Tiffany ‘Layed’ Out

For the first time since becoming Women’s Champion, Layla finally gets herself a singles match on SmackDown, facing off against another Diva that has been impressing of late, Tiffany. On paper, this was an exciting opportunity for both rising Divas to show what they can do in the ring. How did it play out in execution? Watch the match below:

It’s great to see a fresh, new match up on SmackDown especially given the shallow talent pool that the brand has at the moment. We’ve only seen Tiffany in singles action against Michelle thus far, so I have been anticipating these two squaring off for a while.

Lay-Cool are out first with their NXT Rookie, Kaval in tow. As Layla and Michelle McCool take off their hoodies in their signature entrance, they toss it over Kaval’s head as if he were a coat rack. As they approach the ring, Lady McCool has the bottom rope held down for her by Butler Kaval as she enters.

It’s promo time now. The duo make Kaval hold their belts before addressing the crowd. Lay-Cool mock the crowd, yadda, yadda. Oh hey, Michelle’s parents are in the crowd. Kelly’s mom is too, but apparently she’s not important enough to be shown on camera. Oops. More mocking the crowd.

Tiffany Tiffany is out next with her own personal manager for the night, Kelly Kelly — they are dubbed the Blondetourage by Matt Striker.

The match kicks off with Layla delivering a hefty slap across Tiffany’s face but the rookie Diva fights back with some vicious forearms. We’re already off to a nice, aggressive start! Tiffany tries to whip Layla into the corner, but she reverses — Tiffany manages to catch herself in the corner and hoists herself up using the ropes with her legs now on Layla’s shoulders. Layla grabs her legs and throws them over the top rope and Tiffany lands on her feet on the apron. Layla screams at Tiffany and grabs her by the head but Tiffany fights back with another forearm and a shoulder block through the ropes. Tiffany tries to climb the ropes but Layla delivers a beautiful kick as Tiffany takes a bump to the apron.

Raw Redux Does WWE Superstars (June 10th, 2010): The Fox & the Cat

Last week’s episode of WWE Superstars gave us two solid Divas matches, one of them being one of the best Divas matches (in my opinion) so far this year. That match featured Gail Kim, and this week we’re treated to another Kim showing. This time, she’s taking on Alicia Fox:

The Divas start with a tie-up, and Alicia gains control, locking Gail into a side headlock. She quickly brings it to the mat, flipping Gail to the ground while keeping the hold locked. Alicia gets back to her feet and Gail fights free, but it stopped in her tracks when Alicia yanks her to the mat by her hair. Alicia goes for a pin and Gail kicks out rather quickly. She latches on another side headlock, but Gail soon pushes her against the ropes, shoving her across the ring and freeing herself. On the return, however, Alicia knocks her down with sheer momentum.

Alicia makes a move for the ropes, but Gail grabs a leg, stopping her short and causing her to land face-first on the mat. Gail quickly bridges over Alicia for a pin, but she kicks out. After a few blows dealt to Alicia, Gail goes for another pin, but the result is the same. Alicia manages to reverse an irish-whip from Gail, sending her into the corner. She eats boot when she tries to attack Gail, and is subsequently sent flying with a hurricanrana. Alicia, with her long legs, is sent all the way to the other side of the ring and is practically hanging out of it. Gail stops Alicia from mounting a return attack, keeping her against the ropes.

Alicia uses the ropes as a refuge for a moment, darting away from am attack by Gail but turning right into a body splash. She manages to catch Gail, though, and rams her into the corner. She suplexes Gail and bridges into a pin, getting a 2-count. Frustrated, she starts to play a little dirty with Gail, ramming her hair against the mat and grabbing some hair. She hits a body slam and takes a moment to pose a bit for the crowd, looking quite confident as she winks and sends out an air kiss.

Gail takes advantage of this self-distraction, battling back and going for a tilt-a-whirl headscissors. Alicia manages to stop her momentum, though, and hoists Gail up, slamming her down into a backbreaker.

Eve, Layla Comment on Journeys from Diva Search Winners to Champions

Really nice article on WWE.com at the moment, honoring the recent successes of two former Diva Search winners: Eve Torres and Layla. The article charts the two Divas’ growth from their Diva Search wins to present day, where they are the Divas Champion and Women’s Champion, respectively.

A few bites below from each Diva:

Layla

* “I think just within the last year or year and a half, I feel like my growth is noticeable to everybody,” Layla admitted. “I mean, it’s noticeable to me, and I’m my worst critic, but other people are bringing it to my attention. I feel like that’s a huge improvement. I feel like a totally different person.”

* “I feel like I can express myself in a very funny, entertaining way,” the Women’s Champion said. “If you ask people backstage what I’m really like, they’ll probably tell you that I am probably the prankster, the jokester. But I enjoy every single minute.

“I feel like my entertainment value has gone up, way up. Now maybe I can say I’m entertaining and you don’t want to change the channel when I come on. Or you just want to hate me … and I know you guys really love me.”

I totally, 100% agree with Layla’s comments. Since moving to SmackDown in the Draft last year, Layla’s work rate has improved ten-fold to the point where I think she is a solid worker and has a lot of passion in the ring. Meanwhile, her character has developed and she has honed herself to be one of the most entertaining Divas in the WWE — if not the most entertaining. Her humour is spot on and it’s her little quips in her promos that really make me laugh.

I’ve always seen something in Layla and I’ve always been a supporter of hers, I’m very proud to see her with the Women’s Title. In a year or so, she could be one of the few ‘total packages’ in the women’s division: ring work, great promos, wit, personality and charisma.
