Raw Redux – October 27, 2008

This week on Raw: In six Diva action, Kelly Kelly led her team of Candice and Mickie James to victory over Jillian, Katie Lea and Layla.

Thoughts & Reactions
A decent match and a fun segment were on the bill from our Monday night crew. Not what I expected or wanted to see this week, but I have to say, it wasn’t overall a bad night for the Divas. I thought WWE may finally create a storyline this week with Cyber Sunday over, perhaps Kelly vs Beth for the title – it felt like the perfect time to start a new programme but nope. However, the six Diva tag team match was a good watch and Beth’s reaction to Charlie Haas was hilarious.

Starting with Beth, Haas looked exactly like the Glamazon lol. It’s almost eerie to be honest. I was hoping for a showdown between the real and fake Beths, would’ve been far more entertaining than anything involving Santino. Well not much more to add here…

Boy, did my heart stop when I found out Layla would actually be in a match! Holy frig! I ain’t gonna lie, it’s one of the few things that have excited me about Raw’s women’s division in the past few months. Says a lot about the division, if you ask me. When Kelly, Candice and Mickie came out, I actually began thinking about how strong the faces are on Raw at the moment. You have three popular Divas who can go in the ring each and every week, that’s a great thing. Meanwhile on the heel side, we only have one strong Diva in Beth Phoenix while we cannot take the likes of Jillian and Katie Lea seriously because we know they are but jobbers. If WWE actually built up Jillian or Katie a little bit more, I think the division could be very strong. You have three believable faces but only one believable heel. Hell, I think the less experienced Layla (who I heart and adore) is a more effective and believable heel than Jillian and Katie. I can believe that Layla is a bad ass Diva who’ll eff you up, but Jillian and Katie at this point are jokes. I hope WWE builds up Layla a little stronger than they have done with those two, because we need some strong heels on Raw. The only Diva that didn’t get perpetually buried like Jillian and Katie was Melina when she was a heel. She was always the number two heel behind Beth and when you had a tag team match say Mickie & Candice vs Beth & Melina, it seemed like an even match-up. We all knew the three faces would win this match, if WWE bothered in the slighest, the fans may just have felt this was an even match-up. Like I say, Layla is a greet heel in the making and I hope she’s not buried like her partners from last night.

The match saw some great work from all three faces, it was great to see Mickie back on Raw and back in the fold. However, I wonder if that was not just a technicality. I think WWE only booked her for Raw because she won the Costume Contest at Cyber Sunday, had she not I think she’d still be in limbo. Nice work from all three of the Divas this week, they all gelled well together which makes it easier to believe they are a team. I know I say it every week, but I think last night was a significant statement that Kelly is being pushed as the new top face on Raw. Even though WWE loves Candice and the fans love Mickie, Kelly was the one again, who came in off the hot tag and finished the match up. Say what you want about Kelly, but I think she’s worked really hard and she deserves this confidence that WWE is showing in her at the moment. Plus I’d personally rather see Kelly get a push than my darling *cough* Candice and let’s face it, as much as we all love Mickie, she needs to take a back seat for a while. Kelly is a new fresh face and I think this is an example that if you apply yourself, learn your craft, you will be rewarded. But who’s to say that Kelly won’t just be the flavour of the year, which I think was the case with Candice in 2007. Her stock has dropped in favour of Kelly, this year. As for the heels, I would have loved to see more of Layla in the ring, I really want to see her in a one on one match. I was a little wary of how Layla would fare in the ring, it’s been a long time since we’ve seen her in a match. It’s hard to believe that just a few months ago she was having show stopping matches with Michelle McCool on SmackDown, that seems a lifetime ago. I hope Layla’s still got it, she’s a great wrestler for someone who’s only been around for two years. And also wouldn’t it be cool to see Layla vs Kelly here and now on Raw? I mean after their disaster of a match on ECW in January, nearly a year later, it would be so cool to see them go at it.

Some other random tidbits: How effing funny was it when WWE cut Candice’s disrobing with Mickie’s entrance? Usually that’s the money shot for WWE, they just love showing us the disrobe. A welcome change and also possibly a subtle hint of Candice’s de-push. And how funny was it when the heels came out, Jillian was front and centre? The Diva in front and centre is usually considered the top heel in the match and it was Jillian the Joke (ooh I like that, new nickname!). I’d have put Layla front and centre myself, she’s the only one that hasn’t been completely devalued and the only one we can actually take seriously as a heel because she hasn’t jobbed every single match of her WWE career.

Systematic Breakdown of Cyber Sunday

Cyber Sunday saw the return of the Halloween Costume Contest, proving why I least look forward to this pay per view of all the events on the calendar. No Divas matches, but mindless segments which were more like commercials for softcore porn. “You can sail my boat!”, “I’ll take you to heaven!” Suggestive carrots didn’t help matters either. I thought we were aiming for a PG audience now?

Anyway, this month’s column is kind of hard to write so I’m going to add my opinions on costumes seperately. As for the segments and the catfight, it all just seemed a little sloppy and I couldn’t help but roll my eyes at all the shenanigans. While I liked some costumes, this doesn’t make up for a lack of match. The catfight at the end was ridiculous and as you can see from the picture above, why on earth was Mickie  holding Candice? It just looked like a silly routine from a bad comedy double-act. Did anyone else notice Mickie fall over at the end of the segment too? I lol’d. Anyway, it was great to see Mickie pick up the win here, I really thought it would be between her and Kelly and I’m glad it was Mickie over Kelly. What does this prove? That Mickie, no matter how much WWE tries to push Candice and Kelly on us, is still the most popular Diva in WWE today and deservedly so.

Now onto the costumes:

The Good
I thought Beth’s costume really suited her as the Glamazon, it looked great and so did she. Brie Bella’s Cleopatra costume was perfect for her, she definitely has the right look to pull it off and did so. Eve’s very original and outside-the-box Ninja Turtle costume was a lot of fun to see, I really liked it – it showed personality. Lena Yada looked mighty fierce in her ninja outfit, this was my favourite outfit of the entire night. Who’d have thought it? Lena Yada winning my vote! Mickie pulled off her Tomb Raider outfit very well also, I’m not sure how it compares to Angelina Jolie, but I thought Mickie had the right look to pull off Lara Croft. And last but not least – Victoria! God, is there anything to really say here other than LMFAO!

Best of the Best: Lena Yada as a ninja.

The Bad
Candice’s Marilyn Monroe costume was just so cliched. And dear God woman, a little warning before you try to sing. Kelly Kelly as a sailor hmm, there was nothing fun or original about this costume. It just looked like Kelly Kelly in a slutty sailor outfit trying to look sexy. Layla’s Princess Leia outfit wasn’t flattering on her, neither were the buns. But I do give Layla points, because she really showed some acting chops in her little segment, I thought it was pretty cool. Maryse’s French maid costume was again, cliched. It actually doesn’t look too different to something she’d wear in the ring either. Natalya’s cop costume was just unoriginal. And Tiffany’s skanky nun was offensive to some apparently and just looked tacky and cheap.

Baddest of the Bad: Kelly Kelly as a sailor

The Ugly
Jillian’s Batgirl just didn’t work for me, it looked odd to say the least. Katie Lea’s vampire hmm… when I heard she was going to be a vampire I thought it could go one of two ways: a cool sleek vampire or an over the top mess. Unfortunately, Katie went for the latter. It’s nice to know she’s not afraid to fug it up but this is a WWE Divas contest, let us not forget. Just like most Maria outfits, the bunny costume was too over-accessorised with fur flying everywhere. But apparently she made it herself, so go figure. The outfit was cliched also, like so original, Maria. Michelle McCool’s army costume was just one big ole tranny hot mess! Everything looked like it had just been thrown together, it didn’t look like a costume you could just purchase at Wal-Mart. The coat didn’t even fit her and the tights were kinda skanky and Michelle is not skanky.

Ugliest of the Ugly: Michelle McCool as an army brat.

Perfect 10: Week of October 20th

The Perfect 10 returns! The premise is simple: We will rank the ten Divas or Knockouts who we think have had the best week of television, similar to WWE.com’s Power 25. Who will make the grade and who will fall short? It’s all new and exclusive only at Diva Dirt!

WEEK OF OCTOBER 13th – OCTOBER 19th, 2008

10. Michelle McCool (Last Week: #10)
Staying put at 10 is Michelle McCool, the Divas Champion. Michelle had a tough week this week, dealing with her partner (and #1 Contender) Maria who cost the pair a match on SmackDown.

Erin: Well, that obviously plants the seeds for a feud, which is great for Michelle, as far as I’m concerned. If she were to lose a bit of her babyface image, it would help her tremendously. Besides, since it wasn’t really her fault she lost, it’s not like it was a devastating loss anyways.
Melanie: I hope she doesn’t turn heel, but it looks as though she’s gonna be pushed a bit further in the character department. She came across pretty well this week compared to last week’s robotic acting.

• • • • • • • •

09. Maria (Last Week: #7)
Down two spots is Maria, who seemed to be caught up in a triangle with Michelle McCool and Festus. A week from her big win, Maria goes back to her losing ways.

Erin: It looks like she may be getting an actual storyline, so that alone makes this a step up from the previous weeks since her SmackDown debut. Whether or not this leads to a Divas Championship reign is beyond me..
Melanie: I have a feeling this match will take place at Survivor Series, it’s not my first choice but if they keep building this up as they have done, it could actually be a good match.

• • • • • • • •

08. Natalya (New Entry)
Natalya is a brand new entry this week, the Diva picked up a huge tag team win though she didn’t do much.

Erin: I really wish she had more to do, but with Maryse as the top heel and the Divas Championship being contested between two babyfaces, there’s not much available.
Melanie: Natalya is probably the most underutilised Diva in history, so much potential *sigh*

• • • • • • • •

07. Candice (New Entry)
Candice scored a big tag team win too, bringing her back to the Perfect 10 in a new spot at #7.

Erin: It’s not on the same level as a feud with Beth, but a win’s a win. We’ll see if she was merely a place-holder tag team partner for Kelly or if she’s really back on Raw for good.
Melanie: I don’t think Candice is Raw’s top Diva priority anymore.

• • • • • • • •

06. Christy Hemme (New Entry)
Another new entry is Christy Hemme who makes her Perfect 10 debut at a sizable #6. Christy is trying to be a serious wrestler now apparently and a win over Velvet Sky on a live edition of Impact helped.

Erin: Well, this ought to be interesting. I haven’t seen her wrestle in a longggg time. Maybe this feud with the Beautiful People can bring more out of her than screaming and grimacing.
Melanie: I think it’s really interesting that four years later, Christy’s finally being primed for a wrestling role while her Diva Search counterparts such as Michelle McCool and Candice are already former and current champions.

Cyber Sunday: Vote For Your Favourite

The so-called WWE Universe had their say last night, now it’s time for our Diva Dirt readers to voice their opinion! Who do you think should have won last night’s Halloween Costume Contest? Take a look at all of the costumes in one monumental gallery and then vote for your favorite below: [poll id=”207″]

Cyber Sunday Discussion & Tip Sheet

Discuss tonight’s Cyber Sunday pay per view in this post as it happens! In a Halloween Costume Contest, all of the WWE Divas will be vying for your votes!

Discuss your favourite outfits, who you’re voting for and more!

The Tip Sheet
Erin: So last year, Mickie James won the contest even though her costume was about as creative as the ones you can find at Wal-Mart. This tells me that the fans don’t really care who wears what – it’ll be a popularity contest, plain and simple. The question is, then, who is the most popular at the moment? I’m willing to bet on Mickie, even though she’s not really in the spotlight at the moment. I’m sure she’ll come up with something cutesy, but not really worthy of winning. She’ll still win, though. Hopefully the rest will pick up the slack, creativity-wise.
Josie: I tend to believe that if anything is left for the fans to decide (and it’s legit, not WWE rigged), it’s quantity over quality. It doesn’t really matter who or what the best costume is, because ultimately, it’s a popularity contest. If the fans like you and you have a great following, they’ll usually come through for you. You can have a big flop, but the support group will be there. That said, I can’t help but to think Mickie James will pull out another victory. She’s very over with the general WWE universe. If anyone were to pull an upset, though, my money is on Kelly Kelly.
Melanie: I think regardless of the fan vote, Kelly has this one locked down. WWE is pushing her and I think this will be an avenue to do so. The only other Diva I see coming close to her in votes is Mickie James. Those are the two front runners, if you ask me. Mickie still proves to be immensely popular with the fans, but WWE can and does rig the votes for the Cyber Sunday pay per view and I expect this one will fall in Kelly’s favour.

Raw Redux – October 20, 2008

This week on Raw: Candice and Kelly Kelly scored an impressive tag team victory over resident jobbers, Jillian and Katie Lea. Beth Phoenix and Layla also appeared.

Thoughts & Reactions
Monday Night Raw officially seems to be in “holding pattern” territory for our Divas of late. No storyline development, no challenger determined for our Women’s Champion. One Divas match per week to fill the ‘Diva quota’ (I know, I’ve overused that phrase… sorry) and that’s your lot folks! That said, the Divas matches of late haven’t been all that bad. The past few weeks have hinged on what I like to call the ‘Rise of Kelly Kelly’ and that continued this week with K2 scoring her third consecutive victory over Jillian. One could almost dub this a feud if the fans didn’t already know that Jillian would lose each and every match. Raw’s resident jobber brought along her second in command, Katie Lea – that’s nice of her right? So she didn’t have to be humiliated on her own this week. Honestly when you saw Jillian and Katie come out, did you actually think they stood a chance of winning? Though Jillian should think herself lucky to be on TV for nearly a whole month on a show other than ‘When Plastic Surgery Goes Bad’.

Sniping aside, I thought Candice and Kelly worked really well together and the crowd was into both Divas. Honestly, it was neck and neck in terms of cheers for both Divas. Candice looked the best she’s looked since her return, she seemed shaky still at No Mercy, but at this point I think the damage is done. WWE seems to be pushing Kelly into Candice’s old role as top-ish face, I say ‘top-ish’ because hard as they try to push both Divas, Mickie James always wins out with the crowd if there were a choice among the three. I think of Candice and Kelly in a similar vain, they’ve both come in from being unrespected bimbos, let’s be frank, to learning their craft. At this stage of the game, I would judge their in-ring abilities to be equal; I don’t think one is better than the other and I felt as though the moves Kelly did in this match, Candice has or could do and vice versa. Perhaps it’s a bad thing to have two Divas so similar (aside from hair colour) but at the same time, they both seem really popular and put on a decent match against Jillian and Katie. Even if you cannot find it in yourself to compliment their ability, as more ‘conservative’ fans do, you cannot deny that they worked the crowd. Could it be because they were the first on? I’d say that factored in, but Kelly has drawn a huge crowd response over the past couple of weeks from being further down the card also.

I think Kelly came out of this match the stronger winner than Candice, she’s the instigator – the dropkick on Jillian before the match and then coming in and getting the hot tag and finishing the match. Often in the past year, we’d see Mickie do all the work for Candice to take the credit in these tag match as she was pushed for the Women’s Championship and now it seems Kelly is being primed for Candice’s spot. What does that say for Candice? I think there’s more than enough space for her on Raw (personal preferences aside) but I don’t think she’ll receive quite the push she received in 2007, now or in the distinct future looking ahead to 2009. She’s not wholly to blame for being brought back off her game, but I think her ring rust hindered her chances of being champion again and continuing her ‘feud’ with Beth; WWE seems to be writing that off. But that is just my conjecture, in reality, Kelly has only scored a few wins – it hasn’t translated into a storyline with Beth or a match for the title yet.

As for Jillian and Katie, poor Katie! I think she has a lot of potential – though she has been less than impressive in the ring – she has a great look and character that could be built on. WWE seems to have just simply confined her to Jillian #2.

I didn’t watch the Beth segment, so anyone can fill me in the comments. Thanks! For the two seconds we saw Layla, she looked gorgeous with an elongated ‘goooooorrrrrrrrr’. Even if she doesn’t do much, she does it with style.

Perfect 10: Week of October 13th

The Perfect 10 returns! The premise is simple: We will rank the ten Divas or Knockouts who we think have had the best week of television, similar to WWE.com’s Power 25. Who will make the grade and who will fall short? It’s all new and exclusive only at Diva Dirt!

WEEK OF OCTOBER 13th – OCTOBER 19th, 2008

10. Michelle McCool (New Entry)
The Divas Champion was barely seen on SmackDown but sent a message to her new No. 1 Contender, Maria, nonetheless. Michelle has been a dominant champion thus far, will she be able to overcome her new challenger?

Erin: As much as I dislike the idea of Maria being a contender, it’ll be nice to see a different opponent for Michelle. Will this twist her babyface image a bit? I sorta hope so.
Melanie: I expect this will be a simple squash on her way to continuing her feud with Maryse

• • • • • • • •

09. Maryse (Last Week: New Entry)
Last week, Maryse fell off the chart after placing #2 the week before. This week she’s back and has to work her way up the ladder. She seemed to do a good job by dominating the ‘Divas Las Vegas’ pole match on SmackDown, despite losing.

Erin: She came pretty close, but she’s had so many title shots, I’m not surprised she was passed over this time. Maybe she and Michelle will resume their feud after Maria gets her shot. Some have even speculated that it could become a triple threat. We’ll see where it goes..
Melanie: Maryse is still the #1 Contender if you ask me, she was built up so strong.

• • • • • • • •

08. ODB (New Entry)
ODB and her tag team partner, Rhaka Khan scored a huge victory over the Beautiful People & Cute Kip at Bound For Glory with their partner, Rhino.

Erin: It’s a step down from being a title contender, but a win’s a win. Someone’s got to put the Beautiful People in their place, and she’s definitely capable of doing that.
Melanie: ODB has rarely been on Impact lately, she could be used far better.

• • • • • • • •

07. Maria (New Entry)
Scoring her biggest victory in her entire career, Maria earned the opportunity to face the Divas Champion, Michelle McCool on SmackDown.

Erin: Her victory really shocked me, as it was starting to look like she was being left behind on SmackDown. I’m not 100% sure she deserves the title shot, however.. But I’m still excited to see how she and Michelle work together – a face vs. face match could be interesting.
Melanie: I agree, a face vs face match is something new and fresh. We’ve seen it done with the Superstars but never the Divas, could make for interesting booking.

• • • • • • • •

06. Roxxi (New Entry)
Despite a loss at Bound For Glory, Roxxi picked up an impressive win over Raisha Saeed on Impact and continued her feud with the dominant Awesome Kong.

Erin: She’s handling the 2-on-1 thing pretty well, but Kong didn’t factor in much on Impact, so it’s tough to tell if Roxxi can really match up or not. Raisha is more of a thorn in her side than anything else, so that victory wasn’t huge. Kong’s the main target.
Melanie: Roxxi is getting a real push at the moment which is so rewarding to see. She may not look beautiful and Diva-ish, but she’s a great talent and it’s nice to see that rewarded.

Ladies of Hulk Hogan’s Celebrity Championship Wrestling

They’re not exactly Divas but close enough! We’re always looking to expand into new territory, so we decided to watch the first episode of Hulk Hogan’s brand new CMT reality show Celebrity Championship Wrestling. So, let’s meet the ladies of the show:

Left to right: Erin Murphy, Nikki Ziering, Tiffany and Trishelle Cannatella

Recap
In the first episode of CCW, Erin and Nikki were drafted into ‘Team Nasty’, the team led by ‘Nasty Boy’ Brian Knobbs. Meanwhile, Tiffany and Trishelle joined ‘Team Beefcake’ led by Brutus ‘The Barber’ Beefcake. Each week, the teams have to learn three moves and then utilise them in a match before a live crowd in the CCW Arena. This week, the moves were: a kick to the midsection, a forearm smash and a clothesline.

In the ‘Main Event’ show, ‘Team Beefcake’ went first with Tiffany and partner, Danny Bonaduce playing heels against Trishelle and Butterbean (the faces). It was Trishelle and Butterbean who picked up the victory. Then, from ‘Team Nasty’ it was Erin Murphy teaming up with Dennis Rodman against Dustin Diamond and Frank Stallone. The match ended with Rodman and Erin picking up the win.

In judging, Hulk Hogan, Eric Bischoff and Jimmy Hart decided that ‘Team Nasty’ picked up the overall victory. That meant that one of ‘Team Beefcake’ had to be eliminated. Tiffany became the first celebrity to be eliminated.

SmackDown Redux – October 17, 2008

This week on SmackDown: Maria scored an opportunity of a lifetime in a ‘Las Vegas Pole Match’, she will now face Michelle McCool for the Divas Championship.

Thoughts & Reactions
This week’s SmackDown was a real mixed bag. Here’s the thing: I thought the work from the Divas themselves was just fine, the match in terms of ring work was good but a pole match? Really? Raw has it’s battle royals and I guess SmackDown has now adopted the pole match? It was fine when they did it the first time but three times in one year – I hope this was the last one for the remainder of 2008.

Because of the pole situation, the Divas are restricted in what they can do and the match is always formulaic. We always have girls on the outside, two Divas battling it out on the turnbuckle and such. There’s no real focus on the action. The spotlight in this match was firmly on Maryse, even though she lost the match, I don’t think we’ve seen her dropped from the title picture. Even though the focus seemed to be on Maryse and Maria, I was more focussed on following Natalya and Victoria who were really going at it. Is all not well between the BFFs? There wasn’t even any focus on this from JR, which I found slightly odd, as they are supposed to be best friends but they’re going at it. I doubt WWE will pick up on this, but it could be interesting if WWE broke them up. Maybe it’d be the push Natalya needed to be a title contender? Get away from the goofy character Victoria has become? Maria took a pretty sick bump when Maryse pulled her right off the turnbuckle, kudos to her. I really loved that spot, it seems nearly every week now we’re getting these Divas taking real risks and making the action that much more intense. I love that we have Divas who aren’t the best wrestlers as willing to take risks as the likes of Victoria. Brie Bella also took a hit, going into the ring post. Two very good spots that made this match a little more memorable.

The backstage segment with Michelle and Maria was nicely done if a little odd. Obviously they cut out some stuff, because in the spoilers we had Michelle talking about how she’s a competitor. It seems they cut that – maybe because it did come across as heel-ish as I suspected. Instead, they went the route where Michelle respects Maria. But then here’s where it gets really interesting: That cheek pinch? It came across as slightly bitchy and slightly heel-ish. I do hope it amounts to nothing because if you ask me, Michelle is the top face Diva of SmackDown and fills the role really well. I don’t want her to turn heel. As for Michelle’s promo skills lol, stiff as a board. She may have improved in the ring, but her line delivery (as some have pointed out) was almost robotic. Her accent isn’t the most appealing either.

As for the earlier segment with Maryse and Vickie, I have always said it’s kind of endearing when Maryse messes up when speaking English. I find it cute.

So Maria scores a title shot, so where do we go from here? Everyone thought Maryse had this one down. I think the Maria vs Michelle match will end up taking place next week with Maryse interfering and costing Maria the match, continuing her feud with Michelle. This could end up being a triple threat situation or just a forum for Maryse to upstage Michelle again. We’ll see next week!

SmackDown Spoilers: October 17, 2008

Spoilers are below, highlight to read:

– Backstage in Vickie’s office, Maryse complains about the Divas having to face each other in a ‘Las Vegas Pole’ (fuzzy dice on a pole) match to win a Divas Championship title shot because she just beat Michelle on ECW two weeks ago. Vickie says she loves Maryse, but too bad.

– In a ‘Las Vegas Pole’ match, Maria beat Brie Bella, Maryse, Natalya and Victoria. Maryse seemed to have control and was about to grab the dice but was yanked off by Maria who won the match.

– Backstage, Maria is walking with her fuzzy dice when she runs into the Divas Champion, Michelle McCool. Michelle tells Maria she’s happy for her because she’s always so cute and cheery while Michelle was a competitor who played with tomboys, was into sports and was lovin’ life. Michelle told Maria not to take it the wrong way and then left. Jesse then shows up and says that Festus has a gift for Maria: a single white rose. Maria thanks them.

Raw Redux – October 13, 2008

This week on Raw: Beth Phoenix continued her starring turn on Monday Night Raw, the Women’s Champion’s powerslam on Johnny Knoxville is very much a talking point on celebrity news blogs as well as wrestling media. Meanwhile, Kelly Kelly and Jillian duked it out with tag team partners.

Thoughts & Reactions
This week’s Raw was so incredibly underwhelming that I have very little to write. Thus this will likely be a very short Redux this week. Beth Phoenix continues to get a push everywhere outside of the women’s division for which she holds a championship belt. The Diva has been involved in some high profile segments featuring top WWE stars over the past month or so, including Batista and now she’s getting blogged about by the likes of Perez Hilton (I don’t visit that piece of shit, so I’m not exactly sure if there’s a blog about it there per se but you get the gist of what I’m trying to say) by slamming Johnny Knoxville. All well and good, but this was done at the expense of one of the most anticipated feuds of the year – Beth vs Candice which has stalwarted since No Mercy last weekend. It’s nice to see a Diva get recognition elsewhere on Raw and in the WWE, but I’d much rather Beth drop the title and have Beth do all this fun stuff while having actual competition on the show as well. Anyway, that powerslam lol… I guess it’s not exactly Beth’s fault as she has to sell someone who has no idea what he’s doing, but still people are going to be posting that clip on blogs, it’ll likely air on The Soup and it’s a botched powerslam.

Speaking of competition, we got a severe lack of it this week. You know how I like to write that WWE uses Divas to fill a quota? Well what does it say when they can’t even get their usual one match spot? This week we had to put up with Cryme Tyme and Miz & Morrison being injected into our only Divas match of the night. A natural progression from last week’s Raw, but I’d much rather see a straight Divas match. I expected them to have this and then have a singles match with maybe Mickie or Candice. Nope. From what I remember seeing of Kelly and Jillian, they seemed to work well together as was the case last week. Kelly’s execution of that leg-spring off the rope was much better this go around. I noticed fans actually booing when Kelly had to be tagged out because of the mixed tag rules; the fans have really taken a shine to Kelly and that’s important.

We have Candice, who is arguably WWE’s favourite Diva and Mickie James in a useless backstage segment and Kelly Kelly in a wrestling match? That tells you something. I think WWE are seeing how Kelly fever is spreading the crowd and audience and are supplying the demand, they could have easily had Candice or Mickie in a match since Kelly was in one last week. Kelly’s developing before our very eyes, her ring-work is improving and the fans are really behind her. I like that WWE hasn’t rushed her into a programme for the Women’s Championship already like they’ve done in the past with Divas who’ve caught steam, they’re letting Kelly continue to grow and I think when she finally gets her big break, she’ll have deserved it. Kelly’s transition is very unique, it’s happening before our very eyes and Kelly’s still young, she has many years ahead of her. That’s multiple title reigns, many more fans to win over – she could really be the next Trish.

Perfect 10: Week of September 29th and October 6th

The Perfect 10 returns! The premise is simple: We will rank the ten Divas or Knockouts who we think have had the best week of television, similar to WWE.com’s Power 25. Who will make the grade and who will fall short? It’s all new and exclusive only at Diva Dirt!

Last week, we didn’t feature a Perfect 10 countdown. But here is last week’s chart:
10. The Beautiful People (New Entry)
9. Mickie James (New Entry)
8. Jillian (New Entry)
7. Rhaka Khan (New Entry)
6. ODB (New Entry)
5. Michelle McCool (Last Week: #4)
4. Brie Bella (Last Week: #2)
3. Awesome Kong (Last Week: #1)
2. Maryse (Last Week: #3)
1. Beth Phoenix (Last Week: #5)

WEEK OF OCTOBER 6th – OCTOBER 12th, 2008

10. Victoria (New Entry)
Victoria’s comedic genius gives her a spot on this week’s countdown, after an entanglement with Hornswoggle on SmackDown.

Erin: At this stage, it’s great to just see Victoria on television. She’s excellent at this slapstick stuff, and can do it the way no other Diva can.
Melanie: Nice way to start this week’s chart methinks =)

09. Candice Michelle (Last Week: New Entry)
Candice battled at No Mercy for the Women’s Championship against Beth Phoenix. Though she came up short.

Erin: The two of them did quite well at No Mercy, but it’s odd that Candice was nowhere to be seen on Raw. Are they going to continue this feud, or is Candice back on the backburner? One week can’t tell you that, so we’ll see what happens tomorrow on Raw.
Melanie: An okay match at No Mercy, Candice would be wise to be taken off TV and train a little more. She showed she can go but could use a brush up.

08. Natalya (New Entry)
Another new entry this week is Natalya, who also suffered a loss on SmackDown. However, there seems to be more to the story between Natalya and Brie Bella.

Erin: She and Victoria play the tough-but-not-bright girls really well. They’re getting outsmarted consistently, but they still provide great character-based entertainment. The new girl(s) may be getting the best of her, but I still believe Natalya’s a top-draw heel, and this match proved it.
Melanie: It’s just good to have our Nattie back on screen.

07. Mickie James (Last Week: #9)
In an odd twist of fate, Mickie James moves up two spots despite a loss on Raw. The former Women’s Champion has scored up two successive weeks of matches which is more than can be said for the likes of Natalya, Candice and Victoria.

Erin: I’d like to see where this thing between her and Jamie Noble goes – hopefully it’s not only a stock “babyface” role just there to give Noble a partner. A feud between her and Layla would be pretty interesting, and her dynamic with Noble could be cute.
Melanie: I think a feud with Layla could be interesting and a nice change of pace for Mickie.

06. Kelly Kelly (New Entry)
Kelly Kelly dropped off last week’s chart, but re-enters at #6 this week. Kelly scored an impressive victory over Jillian and is rumoured to be in line for a title shot.

Erin: With all of these wins she’s gotten lately, she’s getting a pretty big push. They’re building her up consistently. This isn’t a shotgun-style push, so that’s good. I’m not sure if I like the idea of her being a title contender just yet, though..
Melanie: She’s doing really well in the ring and the fans are getting behind her, as Erin said, this is a slow burner and that only helps Kelly more. If and when she gets that title shot she’ll be worthy of it.

Ashley Does Playboy Again

We’ve been on a detox from this trick for a little while but she’s finally doing something post-worthy. In her best English (it’s like dressing for Sunday church for Ash, don’t judge), Ashley Massaro pretty much reveals that she’ll be getting it all out for Playboy once again. Because we’re all just begging to see … Read more
