WWE Superstars Redux (August 2nd, 2012): Layla and Natalya Remind us That Divas Do Still Wrestle on TV!

Hola, and welcome to this weeks Superstars Redux. This should’ve been our third week together, but two weeks ago they decided to cut a mixed tag involving Layla and Aksana… and then last week they also cut a match between Layla and Natalya. Luckily for whatever reason, the match was filmed again this week and actually aired. I don’t know what we’ve done to deserve such a gift of one of their matches not being edited out, but let’s just soak it in because we may not see any more for a while!

Following the entrances of both Natalya and Tiffany… er, Layla, the bell sounds and we get things underway with this non-title match. Nattie shoves the Champion back early on and proceeds to simply sit on her for a pinfall attempt, but Layla fights out and does not amuse our anvilette. She smacks Layla, and follows it up with an Irish Whip that the champion counters into a nice crucifix type roll up. Natalya kips up, as Layla continues to keep the control with a side headlock. She then starts to channel her inner freakin Costa Rican by shaking her chest around in forms of dance, but Natalya wants all business in the ring. A drop toe hold follows suit, proceeded by a slap on the butt and some added dancing as Layla decides to get down. Nattie attempts a clothesline, but Layla ducks and hits a facebuster. Some kicks follow up, before Layla leaps off the ropes with a crossbody for a two.

Natalya climbs out to the ring apron and screams that she doesn’t have to put up with this… allowing Layla to use her assets and knock Nattie off to the outside. A kick to the head later and the crowd gets behind Layla. She goes for a baseball slide, but Natalya smartly traps her into the ring skirt and goes to town. She tosses her back inside and slams Layla down by the hair, before dropping our champion face first for a two count. Nattie steps on Layla’s hand and then locks in a bow & arrow submission. Layla looks to be in danger, but she soon rolls through into a pin for a two count. Layla with a roll up for another two, as Natalya levels her with a discus clothesline. She begins to throw a tantrum while then going for a suplex, but Layla counters out and hits a huge kick to the skull for the win!

Thoughts: It feels weird to have an actual Divas match to recap… but I really enjoyed this bout between Layla and Natalya. With who was involved though, there was never any doubt in my mind that I wouldn’t. I’ve said it before, but Natalya is THE Diva when it comes to actual wrestling ability for me. I honestly believe she could wrestle her own cat, Gismo, and put on a match of the year candidate. She can work anyone and put on a great showing, sort of like being the equivalent of a female Daniel Bryan. To be honest I can’t even pinpoint either of them having a bad match. Layla, for me, is also at her best she’s ever been with ring work. It’s a shame that her title reign has been so awful when she’s so good in her own right, but there’s nothing you, me, or anyone who isn’t in charge of WWE can do about it. I think that it’s commendable to see Layla stepping up her game with any chance she gets. Given how poorly her reign as Divas Champion has been treated, I wouldn’t have been surprised to see her become sort of stagnant since she never gets opportunities to go out and entertain. But this match showed that Layla does capitalize on every second she gets to perform. She continues to add new moves to her repertoire, and is even attempting to show personality and character throughout the match, which is something a lot of faces don’t get to do since they have all of twenty seconds to do a match.

I’m also really glad the match didn’t get cut for once. We’ll never know if it actually would’ve had the fire not prevented WWE from taping any Superstars matches Monday, but maybe count that as a blessing in disguise because I know I was disappointed when their match got cut last week. I still wish this could’ve been an actual feud that lead to them facing off on a Pay Per View, because really if you give them an even bigger stage and more time, these two could have an even more fantastic match. Natalya is who I wish WWE would go for in a feud with Layla, but I highly doubt they will now since Layla just beat her cleanly here. I still see Eve being next in line when they decide the Divas can start appearing on Raw, and I’d be perfectly fine with that as well. Regardless, I feel whoever is next in line to challenge Layla will be the one to dethrone her due to a severe lack of heel options so let’s hope it’s someone who will get a worthwhile run with the belt!

In 2011, she became one of the hottest American exports to Japan — Hailey Hatred at one point held six championships at one time.

Though originally from the US, her move to Japan — where she made history as the first “gaijin” (foreigner) to win the prestigious JWP Openweight Championship — arguably helped propel her stock in her native America and all around the world. Now recognized alongside Sara Del Rey and others as one of the finest female wrestlers in all the land, veteran Hatred has truly arrived.

This weekend she faces off against Del Rey in something of a dream match in what is rumored to be one of Del Rey’s final independent stops before joining WWE. The match takes place at Absolute Intense Wrestling’s Girls Night Out 7 in Cleveland, Ohio.

Hatred talks to us about the match, her start in wrestling, move to Japan, SHIMMER and much more in this exclusive chat.

Impact Write-Up (August 2nd, 2012): A New Contender is Found, But Not Without Some Controversy!

48

Why hello world, and welcome to this week’s momentous Impact Write Up. Last time we left you, it was announced that this weeks show would feature a fatal four way match to determine the next contender for Brooke Tessmacher‘s Knockouts Championship. The competitors you ask? A vengeful former champion looking to reclaim her spot atop the Knockout throne, Gail Kim; a killer queen who’s not afraid to break your heart and tear it apart just to watch you scream, Madison Rayne; a southern gal who needs no introduction other than the two simple words, Haaaaaardcore Country, Mickie James; and a veteran BFF wanting to show the world that she’s not afraid to take down anyone in her path to the title, Tara. These four have been brought to us from all over the lands to see which is the fairest of them all and next in line for a shot at the Knockouts Championship, so let us sit down and enjoy the match we are about to witness, for anything can happen in the far away place known as Impact Wrestling!

Ahh, backstage we come across Earl Hebner, fresh off his tweeting ways with candies, flowers, AND a teddy bear for Madison. I must say I’m shocked. Normally people only go for two of the three, but as we can see, Earl spares no expense when it comes to someone with such high taste as Madison. (Now someone inform Earl that as seen on Twitter, dear Madison can’t have those chocolates until her next fitness competition is over.) The Queen says she doesn’t need gifts other than his affection, but as Lady Rayne gives her finest Emmy winning performance, she’s cut off by a pink clad Gail Kim!

Gail demands to know what is going on here, as I begin questioning if that teddy bear was won from one of those machines at a local Orlando Wal-Mart… don’t play me, Earl, I notice the tag in it’s ear. Nonetheless, Hebner leaves as Gail questions what these gifts are about?! She then transitions into last week’s match, but Madison informs her that Earl would never screw anyone …in a match that is. (Nice save.) Our Killer Queen says tonight, Hebner’s going to call the match right down the middle, as she wishes Kim good luck and heads off. From there, we spot Mickie and Tara warming up in the back and then head off to a break as I erupt in the Kit Kat theme.

Here we gooooo. Following the pan up shot of Christy Hemme that leaves Tazz stumbling over her name, the Knockouts Champion walks out to join the two on commentary. Brooke steps over to prepare for this big match, and out comes her poops, Tara! I have to say Tara is looking incredible tonight. Up next after Tara comes our Killer Queen and her red teddy bear of doom. Following a recap of last week’s match and some pageant waves, the wonderful theme song of Gail Kim hits. She does not look particularly happy with some Tara fans at ringside, but someone that is happy is our Knockouts Champion who praises the division and what it means for her to be a part of it. Nonetheless, all the happiness is put to a silence through those two simple words we all know and love… Haaarrdccorreeee Counntrryyyyyy! Coming to us all the way from Richmond, Mickie skips out from the back looking insanely great tonight as well. Brooke continues to praise the women since not many commentators in wrestling do these days, but before we kick things off, it’s time for a commercial break which is odd considering we just had one three minutes ago, but as long as it doesn’t invade the match I’m perfectly fine with this!

Back from the break, everything seems to be breaking down as Kim/Tara and Rayne/James each choose a side of the ring to face off. Earl doesn’t seem to even notice that Gail and Tara are wrestling though, with all his focus going towards protecting Madison I guess. It’s hard to tell since he doesn’t really show much emotion. Tara seems to go for a tarantula, but Gail flips her over the ring and James begins going to town on Rayne. Gail scores with a clothesline on Mickie, with Brooke stating that Kim is just pissed and a poor sport! Tara now starts dominating, but that doesn’t last too long as the BFF’s start to team up against the veteran. The crowd gets behind Tara, and Mickie drags Gail outside the ring. She tries to Irish Whip the former champ, but Kim reverses it and sends Mickie flying into the steps!

Back inside the ring, Tara drops Madison with the sidewalk slam, but Gail breaks it up. The BFFs continue working Tara over with submissions, before sending her into the nearby corner. Madison gets thrown into the vet, but as Gail flies forward to attempt her elastic type move, Tara moves out of the way and Kim goes flying! Madison with a running facebuster, but Mickie breaks it up before a pin can occur. James and Rayne not go at it against one another, with Hardcore Country dropping her with a neckbreaker. She goes for a pin, but Gail breaks it up. Tara snaps Gail off the ropes and hits a nice flip legdrop for a two count as Kim kicks out to the dismay of the crowd.

With the fans on her side, Tara bodyslams Gail to the canvas and goes for a top rope moonsault… but Madison Rayne drops her and turns her around to face the ring. She ascends to the second rope, but Mickie pulls her off and fires off against the Killer Queen. Now Gail climbs to the top rope and proceeds to drop a HUGE Superplex! Wow! Gail goes for the pin, but Madison distracts Earl! Gail is NOT happy with her BFF, but she has no time to react as Mickie tosses her to the outside. Now Mickie goes for Madison once again and takes her down on the outside. James now climbing to the top rope, but Gail knocks her off and to the outside! Kim spins around right into the Widows Peak from Tara! Madison goes for the Rayne Drop, but Tara reverses into a roll up for the three count… apparently for Madison?

We spy ODB and Eric Young sitting backstage… with some red belts of some sort being held up in the air. Oh wait, Impact does have Knockouts Tag Team Titles. She tells Eric that Brooke Hogan‘s been on her ass about defending them since it’s been two months with no defense (which is odd since it feels like it’s been much longer than that). She also says Brooke doesn’t like that a man is holding one the titles. Eric cuts her off to hype his own show, which is weird because I thought it debuted last week but he says it debuts Sunday. Eric then hatches a weird plan where they will never be on screen together so that they can’t be defended, which I hope results in Brooke Hogan retiring the belts completely because there aren’t even enough women signed to form teams in the first place. Well there are, but when is the last time we even heard that they existed? (Hey Sarita, Rosita, Winter, and Taeler.)

Also, check out the baby shower for one of my favorite women in the company, Claire Lynch and her screams of horror:

Positive Thoughts: I feel the need to separate my thoughts into good and bad for this because I’ve got so many different feelings towards everything that took place. Let’s start with the match, which I personally felt was one of the best female matches we’ve seen on TV in a long time. They all got entrances, everyone felt like they served a purpose in it, and they all looked to honestly be fighting like their lives depended on it for a shot at the belt. That’s what I enjoy seeing in number one contender’s matches, even if I feel they should only be saved for when a big feud concludes and someone new is needed to start another, rather than just using them to set up a short program with no real story involved. Gail’s superplex definitely stands out as move of the match for me, and I loved the entire segment overall. Plus, they timed the commercial break well and we didn’t miss anything so major props for that!

I think Melanie said it perfectly on her Twitter that with the Divas division pretty much dead right now, this is when the Knockouts need to strike with a big storyline. I’m not sure if Madison/Earl is really the one I’d have gone for, but at least it’s SOMETHING more than just champion vs. challenger. I now can have a reason as to why Brooke and Madison will have beef with one another come Hardcore Justice because Brooke is essentially facing someone who’s using the official to help cheat her way up the ranks to the title. I’m honestly stating it right now that when this feud is over between Brooke and Madison, Earl Hebner is going to be the Knockouts Champion! You heard it here first…

I also love that they finally seem to be going with someone different to fill that top heel position. I enjoy seeing Gail Kim wrestle, and I will admit that during the end of her reign when she started getting to speak a little more, she also entertained me in that department as well. I just feel like it’s time to switch it up a bit. While Madison facing off against Brooke is sort of an odd choice since we just saw them wrestle on Impact I think about a month ago (not sure), at least it’s something different. That match they competed in before was obviously short due to it being on Spike with time constraints, so I really look forward to seeing what Brooke and Madison can do on a grand stage like Hardcore Justice if given enough time to shine together. I just hope the Earl shenanigans don’t overshadow their actual match.

This is my own selfish personal positive, but I love Claire Lynch. I know I’m one of the only people breathing who does, but she’s just so hilarious to me. I sort of call her my Anti-Maxine as I really was drawn to Maxine because I felt she shined in every aspect it took to be a star, and I’m also drawn to Claire, but because I find her to be, well, not so much skilled in anything. I don’t want that to sound mean, but I honestly do look forward to her segments. I’d rather watch something I at least can laugh at or be interested in than feuds with no storyline. It’s part of this whole “I want stories” movement I’ve been starting this week. I honestly don’t care how bad a storyline is, it’s better than just seeing two people feud for a title and then move on from challenger to challenger (in my opinion) because I at least have some sort of connection to the characters involved. I know everyone has their own prerogative on whether they prefer entertainment to wrestling, and mine is the entertainment factor. I still love the wrestling, but I want to be invested before watching people face off against one another. Bring on the cheesy facial expressions and screeching line delivery!

Negative Thoughts: I was not personally a fan of the finish. I know what they’re trying to portray it as with the king of screwjobs helping Madison get to the top of the division… but I honestly just don’t grasp the way they’re handling it. I like Madison, but I’d rather have it be like her using the ropes or grabbing the tights and having Earl “not see it” or something more believable. He essentially cheats for her to win matches, but I don’t understand how because he sees her shoulders down when counting and awards her the win when the opponent is the one with the pin and shoulders off the canvas. I feel like I’m missing a piece of the puzzle or something? If someone can explain it better then please comment because I feel lost with these matches now in how they end each week.

The ODB and Eric Young segment was one of the most confusing things I may have ever seen in TNA. You have ODB admit that they haven’t defended the titles in two months… and then Eric hatches a plan to continue not defending them? I’d understand if they were heels, but they’re not so it was sort of odd. I feel bad for ODB being stuck in this, and truth be told I don’t even dislike their team anymore, but she has a lot of talent to bring to the division that’s not being utilized. I guess maybe I shouldn’t feel bad because she’s at least getting to do something on TV right now unlike the countless other women they have signed who never appear. I would truthfully rather the belts just be retired because every reign basically emulates the one before it in that TNA show two weeks of giving a care in the world about the tag titles and it’s only when they change hands and the past champs want a rematch. After that, they sit around doing nothing for months until it’s time to change them again. I don’t see the situation improving anytime soon, especially when all the Knockouts you could pair up are leaving or probably about to leave so there’s no need to even have them anymore unfortunately.

I don’t know, I’m just not really a fan of how either division is being portrayed as a whole right now. It’s not to the point where I’m furious or enraged, but it’s frustrating when you see all these talented people not used or stuck in comedy angles that go nowhere. The Knockouts definitely have the edge because their talent, you know, actually get matches on TV, and they’re really good and lengthy ones at that. I just wish TNA would pair their extra females up into teams, and maybe sign some huge name to come in and take their division by storm. They need a fresh face in a title feud that isn’t determined by the “number one contender’s match”. Heck, just go with Tara even. Part of me is happy Tara didn’t win because a feud between TNT has enough story already that a contendership win is not needed for it to have a purpose, but then part of me is also upset because I feel like TNA are never going to truly capitalize on a feud between Tara and Tessmacher in the way they should. It’s kind of like when Gail was champion and she would face someone different every month. You wanted your favorite to win even if the build up was short and lacking because you never knew if they would devote another month of build to the same girl. Sometimes they did (Brooke) and sometimes they didn’t (Velvet).

Of course, the last negative will always be the typical where’s Sarita? Where’s Rosita? Where’s Winter? Where’s Taeler Hendrix? What is the point of Gut Check when none of the winners appear on TV in the first place? Yada yada, but feels like a contractual obligation that I mention it.

There’s flaws in both companies, but as far as the actual Knockouts segments tonight, the match definitely stands out as one of the best TV bouts of the year. Here’s to hoping the momentum continues and gets even better with fun matches and interesting storylines!

NXT Watch (August 1st, 2012): Latina Heat Faces the Country Queen

65

Yee haw, and welcome to this week’s NXT Watch. I’m deathly tired right now since the episode did not leak Thursday morning like I anticipated, but nonetheless, I am here to do some recapping so some recapping I shall do. This week on NXT, perhaps the most notorious FCW Divas rivalry of the past year resurfaces, as Raquel Diaz squares off against Audrey Marie. Will Audrey be the next victim in her “Exfoliating Ugliness” Tour? Or will Audrey Marie, more commonly known as equal to me what Dolph Ziggler is to Cryssi, debut with a victory? And what does our sinister Brit, Paige have to say about all of this?! There’s only one way to find out, so scroll down your mouse in three… two… one. Go!

We are treated to a match graphic of Raquel and my Country Queen, Audrey Marie. After the break, we return to some new hoedown music and clips of Audrey posing with some cowgirl beltbuckle nameplate. Oh wow, maybe they’re going to turn Audrey back into the cowgirl she debuted as talking about grandma’s and cows. Well, if they are then Audrey didn’t get the memo because she looks nothing like a cowgirl tonight. Va va voom! Audrey walks out and I immediately become enraged with the crowd for not giving her a standing ovation. She steps into the ring as it’s mentioned that she’s a certified accountant… and thus the days begin until Audrey’s three facts of doom present themselves to a nearby commentary table every single time she steps into the ring.

After some tremendous standing in the ring, out comes “Guess whooooo”, Raquel Diaz. She lets out a cackle and claims that Audrey doesn’t know how to work a ramp, which I take great offense to because the Country Queen did a fine job. Diaz calls her a mamacita and fixes her hair in the camera lens, before stepping into the ring and letting us know that the Exfoliating Ugliness Tour commences… now. Audrey makes a great face to the camera as the bell sounds and we kick things off with Raquel vs. Audrey for the billionth time.

They lock up and Audrey applies a headlock that she keeps maintained for a good long while despite Raquel trying to fight out. Finally Diaz fights out and drops Audrey on the ropes in a pretty nasty way. She only gains a two count, as Raquel applies some form of submission move. Diaz slams Audrey into the canvas and stomps on her head, before continuing this dismantling of Audrey. Marie finally shows some signs of life, as Raquel drops her with a type of drop toe hold. Diaz then goes off on Audrey, before Marie flips over into a jackknife. They bridge around before Audrey flips out. She goes for a kick, but misses and Raquel spanks her on the butt. From there, the crowd doesn’t seem to be on the side of Raquel to put it lightly, as she plants Audrey with the Gory Bomb for the win. After the match, Diaz paints the letter “L” on Audrey’s forehead with her lipstick, before we head to the back where Briley Pierce asks Paige about Raquel’s “tour”. Paige simply says “Raquel Diaz… Ugliness Tour… We’ll see”. Interesting!~

Thoughts: I’m pretty iffy on the segment/match overall. While I’m not the biggest fan of this new NXT, it’s somewhat improving from where it was when it started. Now it’s sort of hit or miss and just “there.” I liked that both got entrances, the match didn’t feel ridiculously short, and we even got some mic time with Raquel and Paige. I didn’t really care for the match in itself though, but I’ve seen them face off I feel a hundred times so it’s kind of entered that territory where I can’t pay attention to anything (aside from Audrey).

In terms of Raquel, I enjoy her mic work. Her persona is interesting to say the least, but at least it’s different I guess. That’s where I feel Audrey falls behind unfortunately. I clearly love Audrey, and I think she has that natural look to become a crowd pleaser without even needing to have an over the top character, but she still needs something to make her spark. She’s just sort of there with no identity. I feel that’s why a lot of fans don’t draw to her as easily as some of the other Divas because she’s just sort of smiley and happy go lucky. I don’t think Audrey is that bad in the ring though. To be honest, I think she’s a lot better than Raquel, but strictly being a wrestler with no identity is pretty hard to do on a main roster ala Gail Kim‘s WWE run. I liked the random face Audrey made during Raquel’s entrance though, and I feel that she’s working hard to improve her game… but without chances to showcase who she is aside from bubbly and smiley, there’s not much that can help fans connect with her since her look somehow doesn’t win them all over like it does me.

Raquel is sort of the opposite for me. I think she has personality and it’s easy for fans to dislike her when she cuts a promo. In ring wise, I’m not really a fan. But personally, I’ve never held the belief that everyone has to be a wrestler. Some people can shine as managers, and Raquel did that when I saw her at FCW last weekend. She does well when paired with a male superstar, and I think she could benefit one of them if they team up. I feel Corey Graves is a star through every aspect in his own right, but I’m kind of biased to wanting them together since that was who she managed last weekend and it clicked really well.

Nonetheless, I’m not quite sure where NXT is heading, which is my one big problem left with the show. There’s so many people they’re trying to spotlight that you can have someone hyped up with videos for weeks, debut, and then not be seen or heard from for another five weeks. I don’t even know what the Paige interview is leading to unless they have more backstage segments planned because as far as I know, the two don’t even meet up down the road. Who knows though? They’re at least picking the quality up since it began, and Rome wasn’t built in a day so maybe down the road it’ll get better. I’m still not 100% on board, but I’m at least interested enough to continue on.

Eric Roberts plays the role of Walter, a former black operative with an evil secret. The film has now sold more than 100 thousand units through outlets like Wal-Mart, RedBox, and Amazon and is currently on VOD.[/notice]

In Video: Mia Yim vs Allysin Kay at AIW Girls Night Out 6

The feud between Mia Yim and Allysin Kay has been heating up in 2012 in AIW.

It all started when Kay broke her nose against Yim in a brutal match. The pair would later meet up again for the AIW Women’s Title in a main event grudge match at Girls Night Out 6. That, however, didn’t settle the issue, as they will meet for one final time this weekend in a steel cage match to end their feud.

AIW has released the full match from Girls Night Out 6, the second in their series of matches.

Your Two Cents: Favorite Duos

38

“Your Two Cents” is our interactive feature where we gauge the opinions of our Twitter and Facebook followers on different discussions in women’s wrestling.

This week, we’re asking this: The Beautiful People are living on beyond TNA, so we want to know: who is your favorite duo in women’s wrestling history? We’ve read your responses on our social media pages and picked some of the best submissions to highlight here on the website. As always, you can join the debate by leaving your comments!

Our Two Cents

Batting for Team DD this week, it’s Katelyn giving us her personal opinion on this week’s topic:

Katelyn: My pick would have to go to Trish Stratus and Lita. Although never really an ‘official’ tag team, their chemistry together (and apart) is undeniable. And who didn’t absolutely adore them when they were pitted girls against boys with Chris Jericho and Christian in 2003?

Your Two Cents

Ahl Anthony Aggari | WWE: Brie & Nikki Bella because they work awesome as tag team partners. I also love how they argue with each other. They are the first female twins in WWE. TNA: Amazing Kong and Raisha Saeed. They’re so powerful together. Their gimmick was also interesting.
Dave Muscarella | Sara Del Rey & Courtney Rush. They weren’t together long but for the short time they were, it was MAGIC. Seriously, that team was amazing.
Eric Holt | Although they were enemies for the most part, when Trish Stratus and Lita were working together as a team, they were dominant. You take two of the best divas in history and make them into a team, you get a team that had great chemistry.

Trish and Lita worked well together as a team when they feuded with other teams. I’ll never forget when they feuded with Stacy Keibler and Torrie Wilson during the WCW/ECW invasion in WWE. Torrie and Stacy may not have been classicly trained wrestlers, but Trish and Lita were still able to put on great matches between the two as a team and in singles competition. My favorite feud they were a part of was when they squared off against Gail Kim and Molly Holly. Lita had just returned from her neck injury to help Trish fight off Molly and Gail. Their match at Unforgiven 2003? Epic! And I absolutely won’t ever forget their battle of the sexes feud with Christian and Chris Jericho. For them to be in a feud and wrestle against two men really shows how great of a team Trish and Lita were.

Francisco Mata | Taylor Wilde and Sarita! Everytime they would come out i would literally jump of happiness, plus they had this high flying style which i absolutely love, not to talk about they were arguably the best knockouts tag team champions.
Jonathan Carmona | LayCool (Layla & Michelle McCool). The entire WWE women’s division was built around them for more than two years. They got lots of mic time, and feuded with just about every diva. Had a Smackdown Main event and WM matches. Ohhh, let’s not forget about NXT and their co-Champion days.
Josue Guzman | Cheerleader Melissa and MsChif. While I loved their feud as single competitors, I found the allegiance between these former rivals to be just as entertaining. Their gimmicks were totally different from one another, there was a lot of bad blood between the two but despite this both women worked well together and put on some of my favorite tag matches on Shimmer. I do, however, wish that they would’ve at least had one tag team reign together!
@MeaganG1990 | Besides the Beautiful People, PMS with Jacqueline and Terri Runnels. Those two were awesome as a team.

And now we turn it over to you…

Beautiful People Reunite Against Familiar Face and ROH First Lady

The reunited Beautiful People, Angelina Love and Velvet Sky, will face a very familiar name indeed in one of their first matches on the independent scene following their respective TNA departures: the very woman who broke up the last Beautiful People reunion in 2010 — Winter.

As reported earlier this week, Angelina and Velvet are due to reunite for FWE on October 5th in Brooklyn, however, their opponents were not announced at the time.

It has now been revealed that they will take on Winter, who herself had a long partnership with Angelina in TNA, and Ring of Honor’s First Lady and FWE Women’s Champion, Maria Kanellis.

Kanellis regained the FWE Women’s Title from Winter just this past weekend, so it’ll be interesting to see how they can co-exist as partners.

Former WWE Divas Champion Maryse will also be appearing.

Report: Kelly Kelly Returning to WWE Next Week

82

PWInsider is reporting that Kelly Kelly will be returning to the WWE full-time a week from tomorrow (August 9th) when the SmackDown brand heads to Japan.

Kelly took time off from the road back in June, and her future with the WWE seemed to be in question. Last week she returned for Raw’s 1000th episode, but never appeared on the broadcast.

This news seems to confirm that K2 was indeed negotiating a long-term deal with the WWE, and that she will be remaining with the company.

Another New WWE Signing

27

While not much is known about her at this time, Diva Dirt can reveal that another new WWE Diva signing has reported to FCW.

Diva Dirt’s Bobby, who attended the FCW live event in Melbourne, FL on Saturday, spotted a young woman with dark hair and foreign accent at the show. She, along with Ashley Fliehr Johnson (WWE Hall of Famer’s Daughter Reports to FCW) and a new recent male signing were working the merchandise table (as FCW stars often do).

It looks as though the young lady is indeed a WWE Diva in training.

According to her Twitter account, her name is Anya, and she is of Russian descent. Her profile reads “WWE DIVA”.

AIW Girls Night Out 7 News: New Win-Loss System, Big Show This Weekend

0

Absolute Intense Wrestling has announced a new win-loss system for its Girls Night Out shows going forward.

The latest Girls Night Out takes place this Saturday featuring two big matches: Mia Yim vs Allysin Kay in a cage match and Sara Del Rey facing Hailey Hatred in what is sure to be an encounter to remember.

Tickets are available here.

Read more:

[notice]On Saturday, August 4, Absolute Intense Wrestling presents the seventh
iteration of its popular Girls Night Out event, the last of its kind for
the year. In addition to the steel cage main event between Mia Yim and
Allysin Kay for the AIW Women’s Championship and the no time limit match
featuring Sara Del Rey and Hailey Hatred, AIW will be rolling out a new
feature to these shows, as documented win/loss records at Girls Night
Out events will be of the utmost importance to the AIW women’s roster
going forward. AIW’s acting president Matt Wadsworth had the following
to say about this development:

“We’ve been looking for a way to mark Girls Night Out as a unique brand
in the world of women’s wrestling, a way to distinguish it from SHIMMER,
Shine, and WSU. Though we only put on three Girls Night Out shows a
year, we believe in offering something different. By placing a strong
emphasis on a woman’s win/loss record, we can do just that. We will also
be adding GNO brand showcase matches to our regular AIW events through
out our calendar year in which the win/loss record will be a factor”

The reward for having a good record is tangible: A shot at the AIW
Women’s Championship, currently held by Allysin Kay. This added
incentive gives each match, from the show’s open to the main event, an
extra layer of intrigue: A string of wins during #GNO competition can
make your reputation; a loss could break it.

Absolute Intense Wrestling will be keeping tally of each woman’s wins
and losses, and has assigned records to its roster members in
retrospect. The full leader board follows the card for Girls Night Out
7. Tickets for the event are available online at shop.aiwrestling.com
for $15. For more information, check AIW out on Facebook

In Pictures: FCW Divas Battle Royal feat. Paige, Audrey, Raquel, Natalie & Debut of Tenille

1

After recently reporting that she had relocated to Florida and begun training at FCW, former SHIMMER competitor, Tenille officially made her wrestling debut for the company Saturday night at a live event in Melbourne, Fl.

Tenille squared off against Audrey Marie, Natalie (Buggy Nova), Raquel Diaz and Paige in a five woman battle royal, which was ultimately won by Paige. Tenille and Audrey were eliminated simultaneously by Natalie after a good long while in what would put the televised female battle royals to shame with how lengthy this one went without an elimination. Natalie then seemed to join forces with Diaz against Paige until Raquel turned on her and threw her over as well.

Once down to just two, Diaz’s male “friend” for the night, Corey Graves (who she had managed earlier on in a match against Seth Rollins) came out to try and help get rid of Paige, but the British Diva shoved him off the apron and eliminated Raquel to win the match for herself. The two then attacked Paige after the bout had concluded, until Seth Rollins ran out to her aid and helped even the odds. With Diaz and Graves taken out, they then celebrated Paige’s win together in the ring.

Check out some pictures from the match below:

Rita Cortez Passes Away Aged 73

0

Female wrestler Rita Cortez has passed away at the age of 73.

Cortez, part of the 1950-1960s era of women’s wrestling which was highlighted in the documentary Lipstick and Dynamite, was trained by WWE Hall of Famer, Fabulous Moolah and then-husband Buddy Lee.

An affair between Lee and Cortez sparked the end of his marriage to Moolah. Later, the pair would marry and remained together until Lee’s death in 1999. They had four children together.

Lee and Cortez also set up the country music talent agency, Buddy Lee Attractions, in Nashville. The agency is still going today and has represented the likes of Willie Nelson, George Strait and more.

In 2001, Cortez was honored by the Cauliflower Alley Club with its annual Women’s Wrestling Award.

Cortez passed away last Friday (July 27) in Hermitage, Tennessee. A mass and burial will take place on August 2nd.

RIP Rita Cortez and our best wishes go out to her family and friends.

Raw Redux (July 30th, 2012): AJ Suits Up, Dancing Occurs, But Has Anyone Seen the Women’s Division?

45

Hola everyone… yes let out your groans that I am the one taking over the redux this week while your Khaleesi gets her Olympics on. Okay, now if you didn’t automatically X out, first of all thank you. Second of all, let’s get down to business! Last night brought my personal favorite, AJ, into her first evening as General Manager of Raw. She was a present force throughout the entire show from start to finish, and as you can imagine, this pleases me very much. Aside from AJ, we get Diva appearances from Queen Diva, Vickie GuerreroNaomi (One of my other favorites)… Cameron… and that’s well, it. I know there’s going to be some blood shed from angry fans already reading that there was no match or segment from anyone in the actual division, and yes I have my thoughts as well that I’ll be sharing later on, so let’s just get started, shall we?

Justin Roberts tells us to welcome the new Raw GM.. AJ… LEE! A last name?! The peppy music of our GM hits and out she walks. Having suited up in pure Barney Stinson approved fashion, AJ announces that tonight’s main event will be Big Show vs. John Cena, with the winner of that match facing CM Punk for the WWE Title at Summerslam. How impactful AJ Lee, but if you’re going to be an authority role you need to get some glasses. Miss Tessmacher did it, Summer Rae did it, Eve did it. Don’t let me down AJ, okay?

Backstage, Daniel Bryan storms into the office of AJ Lee and… wait a second, are those glasses AJ? Nooo, don’t remove them. You were so close Miss Lee, but at least it’s a small step in the right direction. She sets her laptop down and plops up to attempt shaking hands with her ex. He begins to go off on her, but she instructs him to shut up! AJ informs him that she’s now his boss, and last week she saw those white coated men last week. She then comes to the conclusion that he just wanted to marry her so that he could have her legally committed. Bryan tries to state that they were just his groomsmen, and AJ shrugs it off. She decides to book him in a match tonight against Sheamus, and when asked if the World Title will be on the line, our dear Miss Lee brilliantly says no… No! No! No! No! No!

In the midst of a Daniel Bryan takeover in which he refuses to leave the ring and then proceeds to punt Little Jimmy in true Snitsky/Baby Doll fashion, the white orderlies come out and go for what we believe is crazy uncle R-Truth. Just then, the peppy upbeat theme of Miss Lee hits and out she comes yet again! She instructs the gentlemen that they have the wrong person, before turning their attention to Daniel Bryan, also now known as “that little guy in the ring”. AJ feels that Daniel seems a little mentally unstable tonight, and that does not bode well for this being a safe working environment. Miss Lee decides to grant Daniel a psychiatric evaluation, as the orderlies escort Daniel out of the ring! He eventually meets face to face with his ex on the stage, and while she makes kissy faces at him in pure taunt mode, there’s nothing he can do aside from being taken to the back for his evaluation!

As John Cena goes for the Attitude Adjustment, CM Punk runs into the ring and takes both men down with a shot to the back using his title. Following an added kick to the head of Big Show, It seems no man has won the right to face him at Summerslam. Punk takes the mic and calls them both losers, but as he walks up the ramp, here comes the Queen Bee of the WWE, Miss Lee (say that five times fast). She lets the crowd know that CM Punk is incorrect with that assessment. She’s decided that since neither man pinned the other, they are both going to face CM Punk at Summerslam in a triple threat match! Punk comes back out and gets in the face of our mini queen, calling her a bad GM and asking if she’s crazy. AJ stands back up to him and taunts him with the title of being his boss now. He demands to be shown respect, and AJ simply smiles in his face to close the show for the third time!

Also, catch Naomi, Cameron, and the Queen Diva, Vickie Guerrero (who clearly did not master the Elaine dance from her rookie, Kaitlyn) in the following segment below:

Thoughts: Okay, I’ve definitely got a lot to say here despite having little to actually talk about. As far as our pint sized shining beacon of glimmering hope for females in WWE, AJ Lee goes, I absolutely loved her as GM tonight. In fact that’s an understatement of how much I enjoyed her segments. Her acting/facials have improved so drastically since her WSU days, hell even her FCW ones. They’re incredible now, and she can perform both in backstage segments, but also in front of a live crowd which is a quality you must have for this role. She’s pretty much the first female who isn’t strictly an authority figure taking on the GM position so I was kind of concerned with whether or not she could be believable in the character, but if tonight is any indication, I’m all for it. She exuded confidence and didn’t back down to anyone, whether they’re the WWE Champion or even her ex. She was present throughout the entire show and really made herself feel like an actual General Manager i.e. she didn’t just seem like an afterthought who had to be brought into random segments to make matches like when Zack Ryder ran SmackDown that one week. The suit… also a tremendous touch. And I loved that she closed the show standing up to CM Punk as well. Now just get some permanent glasses and we’ve got ourselves a star!

Now, onto the other things we should discuss… the lack of Divas. Let me first start off by saying I’m honestly not as offended as most people. I guess I see things differently because my favorite Diva is actually getting to do more on TV than pretty much any female has since Trish or Lita so I feel like I owe WWE my life for investing so much into her and don’t want to criticize them when they’re putting her in such a high profile role. That, and I also enjoy watching a lot of the mens segments as well so I was entertained by various other non-Diva bits (cough TYSON cough DAMIEN). People always say if you just want to see women wrestle, you should probably check out a lot of the independents going on and I agree with that. I watch WWE because like any TV show, I want to be entertained by the stories and characters, male or female, and I try not to take it that seriously in terms of over-analyzing the segments and stuff. I would rather just be a fan and enjoy what happens along the way. If something bad happens, oh well… things can only go up. If something good happens (like AJ) then I’m beyond thrilled and continue supporting them.

But that also doesn’t mean I think it’s really fair to simply ignore the entire female and midcard divisions like they’ve been doing as of late. People wonder why the crowds are dead silent when they’re thrown onto a Pay Per View? Who on Earth has been given a reason to care about almost any Diva? AJ can get a crowd behind her because she was given an opportunity to do so. Eve, even after being off TV for a month straight, can still get chants when she’s simply in a ring. Granted, they call her a hoeski, but that’s still better than getting no reaction at all. She was given some spotlight earlier this year, and thus people actually react to her. Lita… Stephanie… they were there in a time when women were given opportunities almost weekly, and because of that they can be off screen for years and come back to a better reception than most of today’s current performers.

One of my biggest wrestling pet peeves with any female division, not even just the Divas but the Knockouts as well, is that I can’t connect to anyone when it’s just a revolving door of feuds between a champion and someone who wants their belt. I want a reason to get invested. I want a storyline like when Mickie James played mind games with Trish Stratus from October to April, or when underdog, never say die champion, Gail Kim was written off from ever beating the mysterious monster known as Awesome Kong. I don’t want to see a contender determined by a random match they win… although now that’d probably be like hitting the lottery when it comes to the Divas. The reason I was so into both Daniel Bryan/CM Punk/Kane at No Way Out and Daniel/Punk at Money in the Bank was because that was a feud built on so many different levels than just someone wanting to be Champion. That’s also why I feel Sheamus vs. Alberto Del Rio paled in comparison. People say that Punk/Bryan stole the show at MITB. Yes, they can put on a classic in the ring like it’s no one’s business, but part of that also stems from the fact that I, as a fan, was so invested in seeing what was going to happen. Would Punk retain? Would Daniel win? Who was AJ going to side with? It was incredible, and a large part of what I love to see in wrestling.

I know I revert back to it a lot, but NXT Redemption also created storylines for majority of it’s cast that put Raw and SmackDown to shame at the time it was airing. I cared more about Kaitlyn and Maxine‘s feud than I did whoever the Divas of Doom would face, and that’s not to the fault of Beth or Natalya, but they never got to really make me invested in their group beyond trying their hardest to through various forms of social media. And I don’t mean any of this to come off as complaining because that’s the stigma the wrestling fans who utilize the Internet seem to have, and I too get annoyed at times when people over-analyze things instead of simply enjoying them, but I just feel like all of these thoughts are what majority of the people who read this will be thinking, so they should be said. And since nobody gets a voice to say it on TV, why not do it here?

A lot of people think the problem is that the Divas aren’t given enough time, and yes that is a huge factor. But honestly I feel that more of the problem is that too many feuds are just built around a challenger and a champion… nothing more. Give us reasons to care. I don’t even care if it’s a crazy, unbelievable storyline as long as it gets me invested into a program. Too much of Raw was spent delving on recaps of the main event talent (in fact I think we even saw the same recap four times tonight). We can’t live in the past forever, and eventually newer talent are going to need to be given an opportunity to shine. Those minutes spent recapping could be spent establishing Superstars and Divas to take WWE into the future. You can’t just remove the females or other male talents from a show each week because Triple H and Brock Lesnar need to have 30 minutes spent recapping the same segment four times and then bring the shafted talent out at a random moment and blame said person when a crowd doesn’t make a sound for them.

Put people into more personal storylines beyond just “I want your title, so let’s constantly have stare off’s”, and maybe you’d be surprised at just who could get a response. Why not have Layla in a backstage segment talking to Alicia or someone, and then have Eve approach them and make fun of Layla for being an afterthought champion like she did CM Punk? Have her claim that while Layla was sitting on the sidelines dusting her belt off, Eve was main eventing Raw and off getting the opportunities on other shows that WWE didn’t even feel their own Divas Champion deserved. That alone is enough to make me care about a Layla/Eve feud more than Layla sitting on commentary watching Eve beat Alicia in 22 seconds with a roll up, then engaging in a stare off while Cole and Lawler promote some beef sandwich that sponsors the company and take two bites during the entire segment while commentating with their mouths full of slop. But alas, I don’t know really what else I can say that I haven’t said already so let’s hope next week is better for the women not named AJ, but that AJ continues to do amazing work as well. Drop a comment and let me know your thoughts on the situations going down!

… Oh and dang it, put Naomi and Cameron in the division! (But I’m still happy they are two of the sole four women who make Raw weekly!)

Angelina Love & Velvet Sky Reunion Dates Announced

9

Former TNA Knockouts, Angelina Love and Velvet Sky, collectively known as The Beautiful People, have announced their first dates together on the independent scene after leaving TNA.

Northeast Wrestling has announced the pair for its September 22nd show in Fiskhill, New York. The event is a big one, featuring Hulk Hogan, and legends such as Roddy Piper, Jerry Lawler and Lita. More details here.

Meanwhile, Family Wrestling Entertainment has announced the Beautiful People will be joining them for their next big event, “Back 2 Brooklyn” which takes place October 5th, 2012 at St. Patrick’s Gym in… you guessed it, Brooklyn, New York.

Not only will the two be present for the event, but they have also issued an open challenge to the “two top females on the FWE roster”.

Who do you think will accept their challenge?

WWE Legend Thinks Velvet Sky Should be a WWE Diva

38

WWE legend Mick Foley sung recently departed TNA Knockout Velvet Sky‘s praises on Twitter when he responded to a fan’s question about whether she would make a good addition to WWE’s Divas division.

Foley wrote:

I think @VelVelHoller would be a valuable addition to the @WWE Divas roster. Hope it happens.

Sky acknowledged Foley’s remarks, replying “Thank you Mick!”

Velvet has already had several brushes with WWE programming in the past – she appeared as an extra for JBL’s “Celebration of Excellence” party in February 2005 on SmackDown. She followed this up with two appearances on WWE Heat – one in July 2005 in which she faced Victoria in singles action, and another in January 2006, where she and Trinity were selected from the audience to dance with The Heart Throbs.

She also auditioned for the 2007 Diva Search but did not make the final eight.

Velvet’s former “Beautiful People” tag team partner, Angelina Love, was also granted her TNA release a few weeks ago.

A Londoner’s Eye: Time for Divas to Take a Stand

It’s the morning after the night before and several thoughts are whirling through my brain.

You see, on the first regular three-hour Raw, WWE seemingly showed us just how important the Divas division is to the company, because even with an extra hour of time, champion Layla and her colleagues were nowhere to be found.

This, the first three hour episode of Raw that wasn’t a special edition, should’ve been a starting point for building up other parts of Raw that were often neglected with just two hours; amongst them the midcard scene, the tag team division, and of course, the Divas division. Instead the extra hour was used to show even more of the stars we already see on a weekly basis.

With WWE seemingly showing their hand, there was quite the backlash on Twitter last night following Raw, and while I could forgive the lack of Diva advancement on a special edition of the show such as last week’s 1,000th episode, this week, not so much. With an extra hour of Raw, there’s no excuse to give the Divas 10 minutes of time on the show and start building up captivating storylines as we’ve seen in the past with Trish Stratus and Mickie James, or even recently, with Maxine on NXT and AJ on Raw. Instead, fans aren’t even getting the measly 90 seconds of Divas action they once got on a two-hour broadcast. (Though, it could be argued, it’s better to not see them at all than to watch a 90 second match.)

Needless to say, three hour Raw is not off to a great start. Our sentiments were echoed by former Divas, Brie and Nikki Bella, also: “I agree! It’s so sad! Don’t they know that people want the Divas?”

With the words of former WWE Diva, Maxine, real name Karlee Perez, still ringing in my ears and reports of the cast of ABC’s hit comedy, Modern Family, successfully bandying together to negotiate a pay raise — I wonder, is it time for the Divas to take a stand?

Perez made a lot of sense in our exclusive interview last week, talking about the Divas (and a lot of the male wrestlers, also) having to sit on the sidelines and wait for an opportunity — an opportunity that may never come, all the while giving their best, most youthful years to WWE.

Indeed, we’re seeing from the likes of Perez, the Bellas, Gail Kim and more, that perhaps the grass isn’t always greener in WWE and the trend of Divas opting to leave to pursue other areas where they will be utilized breaks the rose-colored “dream job” theory that many fans have about working for WWE.

With this latest blow, will other Divas soon be joining them outside of WWE? I wouldn’t blame them.

I’m then reminded of all of the coverage I’ve been reading this past week in the Hollywood trade press regarding the Modern Family cast. Of course, it’s not quite the same; there are contracts to negotiate in this case, and I wouldn’t suggest the Divas go as far as filing a lawsuit against WWE, but the principle is there — putting on a united front and standing together often has better results than going it alone.

I say it’s time the Divas grouped together and went a-knockin’ on someone’s door. Surely it isn’t too much to ask for a segment on a three hour weekly show?

“Be the change you want to see in the world.”

Instead of waiting for an opportunity (one that may or may not come), I’d like to see the women stand up for themselves to try and make that change, one that could set the Divas division on a course for years to come.

And even if it doesn’t work, and even if there’s backlash, at least they will have stood up for themselves. That would certainly earn my respect.

So, Divas, take your stand. We’re right behind you.

Jazz, Reby Sky Advance to ArenaChicks Championship Tournament Finals

Jazz and Reby Sky have both advanced to the finals of ArenaChicks‘ first ever championship tournament, joining previous qualifiers Sara Del Rey and Angel Orsini.

At a taping held on July 28 at the new CWF Mid-Atlantic Sportatorium, Jazz defeated TNA Knockout Rosita in what was described as a “great match”, while Reby toppled ArenaChicks founder Amber O’Neal (thanks to interference from Jazz) to advance.

Both bouts were refereed by former WWE Diva and TNA Knockout Shelly Martinez.

Angel Orsini qualified by overcoming Veda Scott, Simply Dvyne and Jana Marlene on October 15th, 2011 at a CWF Mid-Atlantic show, whereas Sara Del Rey qualified December 17th, 2011 when she beat Mia Yim, also at a CWF Mid-Atlantic show.

Maria Kanellis Regains FWE Womens Championship

Maria Kanellis has regained the FWE Women’s Championship after defeating TNA Knockout, Winter, last night during Family Wrestling Entertainment’s event, titled “FWE: X” held in Long Island, New York.

The finish did not come without some controversy, though, as Maria’s boyfriend, Mike Bennett began to destroy various referees for not counting quickly enough during Kanellis’ pin attempts. Ultimately, after a few refs felt his wrath, Maria put Winter away with the Bulldog to regain the championship.

This is Kanellis’ second reign as FWE Women’s Champion. She previously held the title as the promotion’s inaugural champion before losing it to Winter just one month later. Winter then went on to defend the belt against another former WWE Diva, Melina, in a match with a special referee in the form of Lita, but upon Kanellis’ return match for the title last night, she fell victim to the First Lady of ROH and her intimidating boyfriend.

WWE Hall of Famer’s Daughter Reports to FCW

20

Two-time WWE Hall of Famer, Ric Flair’s daughter has reported to WWE’s developmental territory, Florida Championship Wrestling (FCW).

Ashley Fliehr Johnson, the young daughter of the wrestling legend, was signed earlier this year.

She was spotted at tonight’s (July 28) FCW live event in Melbourne, FL by Diva Dirt’s Bobby.

The new Diva obviously has some very big shoes to fill; her father is the only man in history to be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame, once in 2008 and again this year along with the rest of the Four Horsemen. Additionally, her brothers, David and Reid, are also wrestlers. David is best known for his run in WCW.
