Diva Dirt’s Guide to Autobiographies We’d Like to See…

The release of ‘Undisputed’, Chris Jericho’s highly recommended second autobiography, got us thinking. It’s been a while since we’ve seen an autobiography from a female wrestler. It’s been 10 years since Chyna released hers and eight since Lita’s. Last year did however see a biography based on the life of the legendary Mildred Burke, but that was written by Jeff Leen and wasn’t self-penned (Burke died in 1989).

So, we sat and we thought about it — who would we like to see put their life in print? We’ve compiled just a few names that we feel could pen a compelling autobiography. As always, we want to hear from you too. Leave your suggestions in the comments!

First Match Announced for Pro-Wrestling SUN Debut Show: Mia Yim vs Mia Svensson

Pro-Wrestling SUN, the new all-female promotion from Allison Danger, has announced the first match for its debut show on March 20th. It will be Mia Yim taking on Mia Svensson.

Those who follow the two Mias on Twitter will know that the pair have engaged in a pretty fun Internet feud over the past few months after Svensson was injured during a match with Yim at the SHIMMER pre-show, SPARKLE, back in September.

Pro-Wrestling SUN has given Diva Dirt the first look at the press release:

For immediate release: Pro-Wrestling SUN is pleased to announce the first two members of the Queens of Promise rookie roster, both scheduled to face each other at our inaugural show March 20, 2011 in Jackson, NJ.

Representing Jersey All Pro Wrestling is 2010 standout Mia Yim. The last year has been a huge one for Yim, who has been on a tear of the East Coast. From great outings at Jersey All Pro and Pro Wrestling Respect to a much buzzed about tryout with TNA Wrestling. In September, Yim was one of four women to be a part of the SHIMMER pre-show, Sparkle, in Berywn, IL. It was during that weekend when bad blood developed between Mia Yim and her SUN opponent.

In Review: “Quick Shootin’ with Allison Danger”

Amidst the recent buzz about some of the recent shoot interviews that have been released, I went through my DVD collection and decided to rewatch “Quick Shootin’ With Allison Danger.”

In January of 2008, Allison Danger sat down with Strong Style Productions in Ireland to conduct a very detailed and story filled shoot interview. The title may be called “Quick Shootin’ With Allison Danger,” but this interview is anything but quick. It almost hits the 4 hour mark with a total run time of 3 hours and 42 minutes. But fret not! Ms Danger has done enough globe trotting and has so many memorable stories to share that you are able to stay interested through out the whole entire interview.

The interview starts off with questions that help us get to know Allison Danger as a person and a wrestler. Her love for the business comes out the most during this portion of the interview as she passionately speaks about some of the problems women encounter in the world of professional wrestling and how mainstream wrestling has had an unfortunate effect on how the fans look at independent wrestling.

For all you girls out there who are aspiring to become a wrestler in the future, Allison offers some very wise and valuable advice to make sure that you know what you’re getting yourself into and what to expect when you do get into the business.

In Review: “Fight Hard! The Allison Danger Story”

Keeping in line with the SHIMMER weekend festivities, Diva Dirt recently reviewed co-founder, Allison Danger’s documentary. Read our review below:

Like the shoot interview that accompanied it, “Fight Hard! Allison Danger Story” is a truly rare gem that each women’s wrestling fan should have in their collection. Produced by the same crew and in the same hotel where the shoot interview was held, Allison takes the viewers through a 2 hour and 15 minute journey into her world inside the business where she watched her brother reach the ultimate achievement in ECW, breaking into the business, and becoming one of the most well known and respected female wrestlers in independent wrestling today.

It would be a complete understatement to say that every aspect was Allison’s career was covered. She starts the documentary off by spending a good amount of time speaking on her life before the business, giving an insight into her childhood and her time in high school. Things really begin to get interesting when her brother, Steve Corino, gets signed to then-cult company, ECW. With no aspirations to become a wrestler, Allison fills in for the Sandman’s valet one night and becomes instantly hooked.

From then on, she hits the ground running at ROH by becoming a manager for the Christopher Street Connection and eventually being paired with Christopher Daniels and filling the female void in the Prophecy. She also talks about going to TNA in Nashville for a match where shortly after she flew to Japan to fill in for Daffney, who was then signed by the WWE.

Saturday Supplement: Women in Power & Representation of Divas

saturdaysupplement

In the Saturday Supplement, the Diva Dirt team will aim to discuss a news story, a televised event or other relevant and current topics. The objective, like the average weekend newspaper, is to offer more indepth and lengthy discussion.

With TNA President, Dixie Carter set to make her first official on-screen appearance for TNA this coming Thursday, this week we are looking at what it means to be a woman in power in the wrestling industry in relation to promoting women’s wrestling.

ss6-stephIt is assumed that any women in professional wrestling with a position of power would want to advocate their women. Surely they would want to create a strong, empowered representation of their Divas, Knockouts et al for the audience? Given hindsight, it can be argued that isn’t the case. In fact, looking at the McMahon family and the two women in prominent roles, Linda and Stephanie McMahon, what have either of these women really done for the Divas in WWE?

It is almost shocking that in the time that Stephanie McMahon has been in power as head of WWE’s Creative Team, that the women’s division has been on a decline. The emphasis on sex appeal rather than brain & braun can date back to the early soap opera-esque feuds on SmackDown in 2002, including a lesbian angle with Dawn Marie and Torrie Wilson. Publicly, McMahon has been acknowledged as somewhat of an advocate, including by the aforementioned Dawn Marie. In a shoot interview also featuring Torrie Wilson, Dawn said something along the lines of how Stephanie worked with the girls in order to be portrayed as having brains and not just being sold as a sex object on television.

However, looking at the television output — there has been countless situations in which under McMahon’s governing, the women of the company were perceived as just that, sex objects. The Diva Search in 2004 particularly changed the way the WWE Divas brand was run and the way that the women’s division would be considered. The after effects of which are still felt to this day. However in today’s WWE, there seems to be a bigger emphasis on wrestling due to the PG rating, yet the Divas segments continue to be an afterthought and unregarded by the writing staff which McMahon heads. It is true that the senior McMahon, Vince, is ultimately the one that signs off on most of the television but given their personal dynamic, would it not be easy for Stephanie to stand her ground if she were truly an advocate of the women in the company?

For our first ‘Your Diva Dirt’ post, we have a great look at SHIMMER stars Allison Danger, Daizee Haze and Rebecca Knox by Steven_D:

yourdd_dangerFeuds From The Vault: Allison Danger & Daizee Haze vs. Rebecca Knox
Feuds from the vault returns this week and on its second outing I’ll be writing on little known Irish born Rebecca Knox and her enthralling encounters with Allison Danger and Daizee Haze.

The K-Nox arrived on Shimmer shores in 2006 from Ireland and was a technically orientated athlete. Not only was she a Queens of Chaos champion but she held the ECCW Women’s championship for over nine months.

Mirroring the success of her rival; Allison Danger is no stranger to a title and is also a technically gifted athlete in her own right. She has held the ICWA Ladies Championship along with several other accolades.

The two compliment each other perfectly which added a lot to their matches, despite not being the longest feud. It was one of the best in Shimmer, through match performances alone.

Trying to do the matches justice is no easy feat, the technical ability of the two ladies is almost unrivalled in the independent scene in America.

Where better to begin than Shimmer Volume 3 and Knox’s debut match in Shimmer taking on (the dilute Canadian) Allison Danger.

Shimmer Volume three and the stage was set, with the traditional light hearted start to the match over. The fans were behind both competitors and they begin their technical showcase. The style of both women compliment each other and it is apparent from the onset.

It’s almost an obvious fact that when someone steps into the ring with Allison Danger they are going to be put over and well. This was no different, even though they were on par with one another but to me the experience of Danger gave her a slight edge. The fans in attendance seemed to be impartial as the match was relatively even throughout the early going. However as Rebecca Knox contemplates grabbing the ropes the fans gasp, is this signs of thing to come from the crowd?

Tweets of the Week: July 17th, 2009

It’s official: Twitter has become a full-blown internet phenomenon. I mean, what’s better than seeing the inner thoughts of your favorite celebs? I’ll tell you what – seeing the inner thoughts of your favorite Divas! That’s why we’ve devised a new weekly feature, titled Tweets of the Week, where we’ll take a look at what the women of wrestling have been tweeting this week: the funny, the poignant, and the random. We’ll scour Twitter and serve it up for you, complete with the requisite Diva Dirt charm.

This week’s #5 is newly-crowned Knockouts Champion Victoria (@tnalisamarie) thanking her friends and fans for their support and basking in the glory of her title win:

It’s great to see a wrestler’s excitement over a big win, even more so when you can witness it first hand! Twitter’s allowed us to feel a little of that triumph, and it’s certainly a cool thing. Not to mention, Victoria’s super grateful and sweet to anyone and everyone, so it’s nice to see her get a little of what she deserves.

At #4, TNA Knockout Daffney (@screamqueendaff) sends a friend and fellow wrestler a heartfelt birthday wish:

Hey, however he chooses to celebrate is up to him.

#3 sees SHIMMER hotshot Allison Danger (@allisondanger) doing the type of philosophical self-searching that only few accomplish and even fewer comprehend:

Once you find the answer, Allison hit us up on our Twitter account. Much like you, we hunger for knowledge.

This week’s #5 is FCW Diva and WWE trainee Angela Fong (@missangelafong) witnessing an age-old Fourth of July tradition with a mixture of fear and awe:

Clearly, competitive eating isn’t on her list of things to do. Maybe, as a Canadian, she doesn’t truly appreciate the good old fashioned American hot dog? Diva Dirt will have to air-mail her one.

#4 sees Divas Champion Maryse (@maryse0uellet) takes advantage of a recent tour through Australia to admire some of the locals.. sort of:

Her thick French accent vs. an Aussie accent? Tough choice.. Kind of like Marion Cotillard vs. Nicole Kidman. Gotta go with Kidman on this one. ;)

In #3, brings us Indy darling, former TNA Knockout, and SHIMMER girl Nikki Roxx (@RoxxiNikki) recounting an incident that proves physical humor is always the best humor:

Hopefully the guy’s okay, but I’d be lying if I said I wouldn’t be laughing my ass off too. But dude, watch out: car beats bicycle every time!
