Review: “Girl Talk with Shelly Martinez” Shoot Interview

While Highspots.com has long been one of the leaders in the beloved wrestling “shoot interview,” I personally feel that their best interviews have been with the women of professional wrestling. Diva Dirt Style Jury: WWE Hall of Fame 2011

Divas beware, we judge what you wear! Welcome back to an old favorite here at Diva Dirt — the Style Jury! We’ve dusted off the Diva Dirt Style Jury for this year’s WWE Hall of Fame! Which Divas looked red carpet ready and which looked like they belong in the Style Jury Hall of Shame? We have compiled all of the looks and marked them on a scale of 1-10. At the end of the scoring, we work out the combined score for each look and the Diva with the highest combined score is our winner and the Diva with the lowest combined score is our loser.

So, let the proverbial runway show begin!

ALICIA FOX
Erin: The dress reminds me both of chain mail and an accent rug, which are neither good things when it comes to an evening gown. I appreciate that Alicia is taking a risk, but I think she went too far with it. It just overwhelms her, and looks a bit too bondage-y with all the straps. The headband doesn’t help much either. 3/10
Melanie: Alicia has always been ‘out there’ with her Hall of Fame choices, but I’m pleased to say I much prefer this to last year’s. Though I’m not feeling all of the straps, I think the design is cute — especially the hem of the dress. It’s certainly a bold choice and Alicia is treading a fine line between looking good and looking bad, but I think she pulls it off well. 5/10

In Review: “Timeline: The History of WWE – 2001” Starring Lisa ‘Ivory’ Moretti

Former WWE Women’s Champion, Ivory (real name Lisa Moretti) re-emerged last year, starring in a shoot interview that received a good review here at Diva Dirt. Now she’s back, teaming up with our friends at Kayfabe Commentaries for a new DVD looking back at the year in WWE in 2001. The ‘Timeline: The History of WWE’ series adds a unique spin to the regular shoot interview, as it allows for more focused discussion and gives fans an insight into how things were backstage during the year and how things played out on television.

The first thing that comes to mind is that, despite being 50 years old, Lisa looks radiant! And if you’ve seen her previous shoot interview, you’ll know she has a personality to boot. Playful, humorous and highly engaging, Lisa comes across as the ‘cool aunt’ we wish we could all have.

Like with their YouShoot series, Kayfabe niftily breaks things down for the viewer with a month-by-month look at the year that was 2001. There are often a few screens per month, highlighting the major events of 2001 that year and they simply let Lisa rip. Her comments may be on the events that were highlighted, her personal opinion on the people involved, or at times, she can even go off into discussing things that occurred in other years. And hey, who’s going to stop her?

Stars of the Week: Week of January 3rd, 2011

It’s time to hand out some proverbial gold stars! Based on the week’s TV and news, each of the Diva Dirt team members have picked one female who they deem to be their ‘Star of the Week’. Read below…

April: My star for this week is Velvet Sky. True, she lost her tag match this week but she held her own and honestly impressed me. I think her feud with Sarita might actually go somewhere which gives me a new hope for the storyline. Velvet deserves a spotlight. She may not be the most skilled in-ring but she is an amazing character and she gives it all she can. I really look for her to shine this year.

Cryssi: My Star of the Week may surprise some people but to me it’s clearly a no brainer. Not only did this person look fierce on her respective show this week, but she showed just how influential she is to the superstars and Divas that surround her. This week, Vickie Guerrero vamped it up at the side of Dolph Ziggler and took over SmackDown in the absence of Teddy Long. Not only did she give Dolph a chance to win back the title he had just lost, but she gave him the biggest opportunity of his career thus far and he certainly capitalized and became the new number one contender to the World Heavyweight Championship. When it comes to delicious heels Vickie just can’t be touched and she was at her best on Friday night. And that my friends is why she’s my star of the week.

David: My Star of the Week is Kelly Kelly. I know, she lost to Michelle McCool on Friday Night SmackDown, but I am starting to really like what they are doing with her character. I have been critical of her previous spots with Drew McIntyre, but the WWE has stuck with them and I think the pairing is starting to show some chemistry. Even though Kelly was defeated Friday, I thought she took it right to both members of Lay-Cool and showed some interesting new offense. To me Lay-Cool’s “mean girls” act only works if you care about who is being bullied. As I was watching this week’s show I thought Kelly did a good job making me care about what happened to her, and I was even happy to see Drew come down to ringside to save her. I want emotion when I watch pro wrestling and I felt something this week. So well done Kelly.

Perfect 10 of 2010: Michelle McCool (#1)

It’s that time of year once again: the Perfect 10 is back to count down the top 10 Divas and Knockouts of 2010. Based on their year’s successes, we’ve compiled (as best we can) the ten Divas and Knockouts we feel gave us a 2010 to remember in WWE and TNA. Check back over the next five days to see the countdown unfold, with the #1 being revealed on New Year’s Eve (Friday).

#1: MICHELLE MCCOOL
LAST YEAR: #1 – 2008: #1
For the third year in a row, Michelle McCool tops the Perfect 10 and really… is it any surprise? Love her or hate her, the controversial Diva has had continued success in the WWE Divas division over the past 12 months. After becoming the first ever Divas Champion in 2008, the first ever woman to hold the Divas and Women’s Championships in 2009, the question was, ‘Just what more could Michelle accomplish in 2010?’ It seemed nothing. How wrong we were.

In the past 12 months, Michelle has held both the Women’s and Divas Championships and became known as the ‘Flawless History-Maker’ by unifying the two belts in September. The cherry on the cake? Being crowned ‘Diva of the Year’ at the Slammys in December.

Continuing her feud from 2009 with Mickie James, Michelle and ‘flawless BFF’ Layla continued their mockery of James into 2010. In January, the pair held a ‘Piggie James Going Away’ party for the multi-time Women’s Champion, splattering a cake in her face in what proved to be one of the most powerful Diva segments in some time. Michelle got her comeuppance, however, at the Royal Rumble when James took the Women’s Championship from her and added insult the injury by dumping a cake of her own all over Lay-Cool.

Perfect 10 of 2010: Madison Rayne (#2)

It’s that time of year once again: the Perfect 10 is back to count down the top 10 Divas and Knockouts of 2010. Based on their year’s successes, we’ve compiled (as best we can) the ten Divas and Knockouts we feel gave us a 2010 to remember in WWE and TNA. Check back over the next five days to see the countdown unfold, with the #1 being revealed on New Year’s Eve (Friday).

#2: MADISON RAYNE
LAST YEAR: — 2008: —
Much like Layla’s rise in the Divas division, 2010 was the year of the Rayne in TNA. After Angelina Love’s release in September 2009, Rayne found herself becoming the leader of The Beautiful People going into 2010, despite Velvet Sky being one of the group’s founding members. Finding her feet in TNA, Rayne has gone onto become a three-time Knockouts Champion within the span of 12 months and pretty much the queen bee in the company.

Rayne’s ascension to Knockout glory began in January when Angelina Love returned to TNA, turning babyface and feuding with Rayne and her Beautiful cohorts. Rayne led her group to victory in March as she, Velvet and Lacey won the Knockouts Tag Team Championships. Not content with just that, Rayne pinned Tara in a ‘Winner Take All’ tag team cage match in April, becoming the Knockouts Champion effectively allowing The Beautiful People to hold all the Knockouts gold. Rayne made history as the first Knockout to hold both belts simultaneously.

Perfect 10 of 2010: Layla (#3)

It’s that time of year once again: the Perfect 10 is back to count down the top 10 Divas and Knockouts of 2010. #3: LAYLA
LAST YEAR: — 2008: —
No Diva has seen her stock rise quite in a 12 month period quite like Layla. The rise and rise of the London-born Diva has to be considered perhaps one of the greatest success stories of the year. While Divas like Eve and Alicia were touted ‘the next big thing’ in the Divas division, it was Layla who truly proved to be the next top Diva in WWE, joining the ranks of Michelle McCool, Melina and Beth Phoenix. By associating herself with McCool last year, Layla shot to the top of the Divas division and became one half of the duo that defined 2010 in female wrestling: Lay-Cool. She now defines herself not as ‘former Diva Search winner’ but as ‘former Women’s Champion’.

Beginning the year by continuing her feud along with Michelle against Mickie James, Layla memorably donned a fatsuit on an episode of SmackDown, mocking James. At January’s Royal Rumble, again she donned the fatsuit but this time she was attacked by Mickie, who then went onto defeat Michelle for the Women’s Title and dumped a cake on both members of Lay-Cool just as they had done to her some weeks prior.

Perfect 10 of 2010: Angelina Love (#4)

It’s that time of year once again: the Perfect 10 is back to count down the top 10 Divas and Knockouts of 2010. #4: ANGELINA LOVE
LAST YEAR: #3 – 2008: #10
When Angelina Love was abruptly released last September due to visa issues, she vowed to return and return she did in January. Since making her comeback, Angelina has gone onto become a record 5-time Knockouts Champion, with three runs in the past 12 months and is now one half of the Knockouts Tag Team Champions also.

It all started in January when Love returned, sitting ringside for a match between The Beautiful People and Hamada & Awesome Kong. She was seen hugging her former cohorts as they made their way down to the ring, but after the match it was a completely different story. Turning babyface, Angelina attacked all three members of the group including her ‘replacement’, Lacey Von Erich. This set in motion a running storyline in the Knockouts division that would last nearly an entire year.
