Systematic Breakdown of Unforgiven

The first ever Divas Championship match at Unforgiven – and the first ever Divas Championship title defence – is in the books. The All American Girl, Michelle McCool retained her title against the French-Canadian hottie who just happened to dress like Iron Man, Maryse. What’s the verdict? I’d say it was positive. In SmackDown’s second pay per view outing, the stars aligned for our Divas at Unforgiven, making up for the lack of time and excitement at Great American Bash when Michelle first won her title by defeating Natalya. This time around, the two Divas involved really worked it out, using their surroundings well to make a fun match up, plus they were afforded more time than the Divas are usually given on pay per view. The result was a good match from the SmackDown blondes – if a lot sloppy at times.

All in all, I think the work was strong, there was a lot of movement and a lot of story told in this match with Maryse going after Michelle’s leg and such. Neither Michelle or Maryse are at Mickie James or Beth Phoenix level so I definitely expected some sloppiness, but I think these two overcame the odds and by the time the final bell rang, they delivered a good match. The action was fast paced which I did not expect from these two, they both showed a lot of athleticism and I think it’s a true testament to how SmackDown has developed. Anyone who reads my Raw or SmackDown Redux, knows that I think it’s great when the Divas go on the outside and get a little rough and this was Raw calibre right here. Given they are not the most experienced Divas on the roster, I think it was great that they took the risk and Maryse throwing Michelle over the barricade and then Michelle clotheslining Maryse jumping off the barricade. I don’t think I’ve seen the Divas really do that, sure they brawl on the outside and stuff but this took it to the next level.

The second half of the match told more of a story, which I appreciated, with Maryse working on Michelle’s knee and her more on the offensive. We’re used to see Michelle dominating matches, so it was a nice change of pace and we got to see some great work from Maryse. I knew from the outset that Michelle would win, but I feel both Divas got some equal time to show off their moves and even though Maryse lost, she got to work it out. As I was talking about in the live blog last night, seems as though Michelle has changed her “Wings of Love” from an Awesome Kong “Implant Buster” to a simple front suplex, it doesn’t look as good or as effective.

It could have used a little more crowd injection, I don’t think they were into the match. I have a feeling because not as many people watch SmackDown as Raw, maybe the audience isn’t as familiar with the SmackDown Divas? Or maybe they just straight up don’t like what they saw? But in all, I enjoyed the match and the work from both Divas.

The Other Divas Brawl at the Bash

Diva Dirt reader, Artie rightfully reminded us that we’ve been focussing so much on Michelle McCool‘s Divas Championship victory over Natalya, that we’ve forgotten to even acknowledge the other Divas brawl at the Bash. Well more of a catfight than a brawl but highly entertaining nonetheless, Vickie Guerrero laid her former wedding planner, Alicia Fox … Read more

Divas Weigh In On Divas Championship

It is officially Great American Bash weekend! We’re going to be celebrating and keeping you posted all weekend on this historic weekend, because tomorrow night we will be crowning the first ever Divas Champion! Anyway, WWE.com has a really interesting article on the new title, including comments from many Divas including the challengers – Michelle and Natalya – and even Raw’s Beth Phoenix.

After nine years of battling without a title, the Divas of SmackDown finally have their golden opportunity — the newly-created Divas Championship.

When SmackDown General Manager Vickie Guerrero, referring to herself as “the woman in power in a male-dominated world” introduced the new title, she made history. Now, only one question remains: Will it be Natalya or Michelle McCool who will join the GM in carving her name into the history books as the first to wear the Divas Championship crown?

Third-generation Diva Natalya became the first contender in line for the honor after reigning victorious in a Golden Dreams Match against six of the Sexiest Women on Television. In that match, she managed to plow through her best friend Victoria, as well as Michelle McCool, who she will face one-on-one at The Great American Bash for the title.

“It felt amazing to win. I accomplished something very big for myself, especially being on SmackDown for only a few months,” said the dominant beauty. “All my years in The Dungeon, training ruthlessly, and all my hard work has paid off. We finally have a title to compete for and I am more than a contender. I see myself wearing that gold.”

SmackDown’s All-American Girl, who fittingly won her chance at the Divas Championship on Independence Day, knows that going against Natalya for the coveted title on Sunday will be no easy feat, but McCool says she is prepared to prove herself, and will stand tall over her competition.

I Am Jack’s Complete Lack of Surprise

It looks like WWE is seeing fit to pull the old switcheroo, though unlike the cool kind in movies like Fight Club (which I was referencing in the title, if you are insane and haven’t seen it), this kind of twist is one we didn’t want to see, but kind of expected. According to PWInsider.com, … Read more

Systematic Breakdown of One Night Stand

It’s only been two weeks since I wrote my last “Systematic Breakdown of…”, but here we are again. Another pay per view in the history books – and actually, the word “history” is very fitting here – because last night at the 2008 edition of One Night Stand, history was made for the WWE Divas when Beth Phoenix and Melina did battle in what I am sure in future, will be an iconic “I Quit” match.

This month we are introducing new elements to the Breakdown, after the cut we have pictures too!

Thoughts & Reactions
For those of us who watched the match live last night, I know I certainly felt like I was watching history being made because from from start to finish, this was a fantastic, competetive match. Both Divas deserve a standing applause, because they worked their butts off at One Night Stand and delivered a match that for me, stole the show. I wrote in our Prediction Post yesterday that this could go one of two ways; it could be a filler match or it could be a defining match for the women’s division and thankfully it was the latter. WWE really invested time into this match allowing it to be the best it could be and I’m grateful, I loved watching this match, it showcased the ability of the Divas. Sure, they’re sexy but it’s not all about sex… these two Divas proved that they can wrestle, that if given the time and emotional investment into storylines, that the WWE Divas brand can be so much more than Diva Search girls, bikini contests etc.

I fully expected the Beth win and I think it was the right call to make, as much as I love Melina, there’s no way you could have the Glamazon quit without making her look weak. Yes, Melina quit but she still came across strong – just look at what it took for Beth to finally put Melina away. She really hung on in there and that’s something I hope WWE pushes on RAW tonight. Furthermore, they should really push that Melina took Beth further than any Diva before her could, really made Beth work for her victory and didn’t make it easy for her. Candice and Mickie, sure they had good matches with Beth, but those matches in my eyes are weak compared to this one. They really need to sell that this match with Melina really took it’s toll on the Glamazon because Melina certainly deserves the kudos and after her amazing work over the past few weeks, really does deserve to remain in the limelight.

Overall, the in-ring work and the story told in this match was fantastic and the girls deserve a lot of respect for the way they mapped out this match and were able to tell a story. They got a lot more time than the Divas usually do, 10-12 minutes and planned every bit of it so it was must-watch television. Even though we all knew Beth would win in the end, they really worked hard to give Melina an upper-hand in parts of the match, have her come across as though she just might beat Beth and that added to the excitement of the match-up.

The finish was just fantastic and a sight to be seen, the image above is just wow… I mean, if you thought Beth piling up Melina and Mickie at Judgment Day was a sight, then this was it’s equal. What a fantastic finish to the match, it really showed that Beth needed to pull out all the stops to get Melina to say “I quit”, and this move with Melina’s body so contorted her head touching her feet – it was just sick! This finish showed the physicality and the intensity of both these Divas, I don’t think there could be any other move to end this match that would do it justice; they really went that extra mile with the finish with Melina being forced to quit due to the severity of this move.

After a 5-star match, what does WWE do? Taint it! Ain’t that always the way… Instead of appreciating this defining Divas match, we cut to John Cena talking about two girls doing submission holds is hot. Let’s throw out the window the fact that this match was so physical, so intense just like the men’s matches. No instead, let’s make sexual innuendos. The whole Cena-Adamle-Mickie thing was stupid and pathetic. I don’t think WWE even knows where they’re going with Cena-Mickie, they just want to get her on TV in some fashion. She still can’t act, though.

Congratulations Beth & Melina

Diva Dirt would like to congratulate Beth Phoenix and Melina on their showstopping match-up last night at One Night Stand. Prediction Post: One Night Stand

Which Diva will wake up tomorrow on the better end of tonight’s One Night Stand? Beth Phoenix or Melina? Diva Dirt bloggers, Erin and Melanie look at tonight’s pay per view in our new monthly prediction posts! Each month, we will look at the featured Divas contest and break it down: What we would like to see happen, what we think will happen and the aftermath of the match in the future. This month, we look at the “I Quit” match between Beth and Melina:

What We Want To See Happen
Erin: Personally, I’d love for Melina to win. That’s probably obvious, as I’m a big Melina fan, but I also think that she needs to win this match to solidify her toughness – she’s played “jobber” for a few months now – and Beth is clearly fine in that department. If she were to lose this match, it could possibly demote her back to the “lower tier” status and prevent her from posing a serious threat as a contnder to the title, and I really believe she deserves better than that. If she wins, it doesn’t necessarily squash Beth – she can win in a crafty way that doesn’t make Beth weak. In my mind, it’s simple – the best feud opportunity right now could be Mickie, Melina, and Beth feuding over the title. If Melina is defeated easily by Beth tonight, that opportunity could be squashed, along with Melina. To keep her in the game and up on Mickie and Beth’s competitive level, I feel that she needs that big win tonight. Especially, if she’s turning face or tweener or whatever, it’s essential to not make her look weak now that she’s making a significant character change. Those two paired together could be enough to make her forgettable to many fans, I’d say. It’s been done before, and it can happen again – I just hope it won’t.

Melanie: To be honest, I’m not really too fussed about the outcome here. What I really want to see happen is that this be a fun, exciting and meaningful match-up. I think this could go either way: It could either be just another filler Diva match between two big match-ups or it could really be the defining Diva match of the year. It could really mean something for the future of the women’s division. For that to happen, it will need time – more than five minutes, which is the going rate for the Divas these days. This match shouldn’t just be part of the undercard, it should really have depth to it. I have no doubt that both these Divas will work incredibly hard, but if WWE doesn’t meet them half way by giving them time to execute this match properly it could turn out really bad. I think many fans are sceptical of that. I’d like a really physical match-up, with both Divas being made to look strong. I’d love for Melina to come across as not backing down, despite taking a pummelling from Beth. I do think Beth should win here, since there’s no way she can quit without ruining her character. But I want a good match more than anything else.
