Flair & Deville Brawl On SmackDown; Rodriguez Added To Royal Rumble

For those that missed the Jan. 13 episode of SmackDown, there were two women’s matches and a segment involving SmackDown Women’s Champion Charlotte Flair continuing a feud with Sonya Deville.

The first women we saw during the night was a backstage segment between Liv Morgan, Maxxine Dupri, Emma, and Raquel Rodriguez. In the locker room, both Emma and Maxxine were questioning Morgan’s desire to enter the Royal Rumble in the number one position. Emma was giving her advice more out of care whereas Maxxine pretty much said she was dumb to want to enter at number one.

Rodriguez would enter the conversation and agree with both Emma and Maxxine. Morgan took offense to this and said she recently had her palm read. She wanted Rodriguez to take a look at her palm but instead, Morgan slapped her across the face. Rodriguez said she is tired of people not realizing she is the strongest woman in the locker room. This led to a match between the two later in the night. Rodriguez also declared herself for the Rumble.

The first match was between Tegan Nox and Xia Li. It was a quick affair between the two only lasting a few minutes. The winner of the match would be Nox after she avoided a spinning kick from Li. Nox hit the Shiniest Wizard to get the pinfall victory.

Valhalla was involved in a Viking Raiders vignette calling out Drew McIntyre & Sheamus.

The second match as mentioned earlier was Morgan facing Rodriguez. Lasting a bit longer than the first women’s match, this one went to Rodriguez. As the match came to its conclusion, Morgan pulled out a table despite this not being any type of stipulation match. She set it up and placed Rodriguez on top of it on the outside. As Morgan climbed to the top, Rodriguez would roll off the table and got back in the ring. Still on the turnbuckle, Morgan went to hit a crossbody but was swatted down by Rodriguez. Rodriguez followed up with the Tejana Bomb to get the pin.

Lastly, Sonya Deville was backstage in Adam Pearce’s office demanding a rematch for the SmackDown Women’s Title against Charlotte Flair. Deville failed to get the victory last week and wants another match. Pearce explained to her that’s not how it works, she just lost and has to go to the back of the line. Deville wouldn’t accept this and said she will get her rematch essentially her way.

Moments later after a commercial break, Deville attacked Flair backstage and the two entered into a brawl. The brawl was broken up multiple times by officials but it did last a few minutes.

Updated list of 2023 Women’s Royal Rumble Participants –

REWIND: Flair, Lynch, & Carmella Come Face to Face SmackDown Live 08.14.18

It has been over four years since Carmella has held singles gold in WWE. Since then she has gone on to become WWE Women’s Tag Team Champion along with Zelina Vega.

On the Aug. 14 episode of SmackDown Live in 2018, then-SmackDown Women’s Champion Carmella came face to face with her SummerSlam opponents Charlotte Flair and Becky Lynch. After losing to both Lynch and Flair in non-title bouts, both women were set to face Carmella at the biggest event of the summer in a Triple Threat match. Lynch originally had thought that she was going to face Carmella one-on-one.

This segment between the three women led to Flair stating that the fans don’t like Carmella because she is a Diva living in a women’s era. To which Carmella responded – “I am a Diva and I am damn proud of it. I have something you two will never have. Compare my beauty to yours. Compare my body to yours. Compare my charisma to yours. Oh, I have one more comparison. I am the champ and you’re not.”

The three would go on to have their match at SummerSlam where Flair would become the new champion after pinning Lynch. Carmella’s reign lasted 131 days. Post-match, Lynch turned heel by attacking Flair.

Charlotte Flair Celebrates Nine Years In WWE

It has been nine years today, July 17, since Charlotte had her first match on NXT programming. Her signing took place in 2012, however, she would win her debut match in 2013 against Bayley.

Charlotte would go on to win the NXT Women’s Championship and would eventually be called up to the main roster in 2015 along with Sasha Banks and Becky Lynch. She would quickly become Divas Champion after defeating Nikki Bella to end her longest reign. Flair would be the last Divas Champion before the WWE Women’s Championship (eventual and current Raw Women’s Championship) would be introduced and the Divas would be referred to as simply Superstars moving forward.

In the nine years that Flair has been in the ring with WWE she has accomplished the following –

  • 6-time Raw Women’s Champion
  • 6-time SmackDown Women’s Champion
  • 2-time NXT Women’s Champion
  • WWE Divas Champion
  • WWE Women’s Tag Team Champion
  • Fourth Grand Slam Champion
  • 2020 Royal Rumble Winner
  • One of three women to be the first to main event WrestleMania

Becky Lynch just recently celebrated eight years since her in-ring debut. You can read about her accomplishments by clicking here.

Flair is currently out of action since WrestleMania Backlash in May in order to get married.

Flashback Match: Sasha Banks vs. Charlotte Flair – Raw 07.25.16

This week’s Flashback Match Friday is a match between Sasha Banks and Charlotte Flair that would be the start of a series of unforgettable matches for the Women’s Championship (eventually renamed Raw Women’s Championship).

Flair became the first Women’s Champion as the Divas Championship was retired at WrestleMania 32 after a tremendous Triple Threat battle against both Banks and Becky Lynch. Banks wasn’t finished with her vision to win her first gold on the main roster and she does it in this very match.

On Raw nearly six years ago to the day on July 25, Flair defended her title in the first of six matches the two would have for the Raw Women’s Championship. At the time, the back and forth of the title exchange seemed unnecessary, but looking back it can be credited to how important the championship is and what it represents.

In this particular match, Banks would win her first gold on the main roster. She was previously an NXT Women’s Champion much like Charlotte. However, Charlotte had won the Divas Title and now held the Women’s Championship before The Boss.

The final moments of the match saw a series of Bank Statements. After locking it in, Flair was able to roll away from it to get closer to the ropes but Banks locked it in again. Flair would get her foot on the ropes to break the hold. Seething, Flair told Banks that she will never beat her. This just before Banks executed the backstabber into another Bank Statement. Flair would tap and we had a new Women’s Champion.

As mentioned earlier, the two women would go on to have five more championship matches throughout 2016.

  • Charlotte Flair defeated Sasha Banks (c) – SummerSlam
  • Sasha Banks defeated Charlotte Flair (c) – Oct. 3 Raw
  • Charlotte Flair defeated Sasha Banks (c) – Hell in a Cell – First Women’s HIAC match
  • Sasha Banks defeated Charlotte Flair (c) – Nov. 28 Raw
  • Charlotte Flair defeated Sasha Banks (c) – Roadblock: End of the Line

These matches would go on to be referenced for years to come as Banks was ridiculed for not being able to hold onto a championship for more than 30-days. She would eventually do so with the SmackDown Women’s Championship and the Women’s Tag Team Championships.
