10-Knockouts Gauntlet Match, TNA 11/14/11

Welcome to another Free Match Friday! This week it has been decided to keep with the IMPACT theme from last week. This time it will go back several more years to TNA where a gauntlet match was featured to determine the number one contender to Gail Kim’s Knockouts Championship.

Kim won the championship for the second time in her career the night prior at Turning Point. This title win occurred in a fatal-four way (also featured Madison Rayne and Mickie James) and Velvet Sky was the champion heading into the match. With the help of Karen Jarrett and Rayne, Kim planned for the winner of this Gauntlet match to be Rayne. Was Rayne successful in becoming the number one contender?

Take a look at this match to see if Rayne could pull off the victory to Kim’s satisfaction.

Ashley & Trish Stratus vs. Candice Michelle & Victoria 01/23/06

This week for Free Match Friday, the Diva-Dirt staff wants to pay tribute to Ashley Massaro.

In this tag team match from early 2006, Trish Stratus was helping out the 2005 Diva Search winner. Stratus chose to team up with her against Candice Michelle and Victoria. Ashley was able to pick up the win for her team. She hit a high cross body off the top turnbuckle and came crashing down on Victoria for the pinfall victory.

This decision by Stratus to team with Ashley made Mickie James jealous and attacked Ashley after the match. James was infatuated with Stratus at the time and didn’t condone the attention Ashley was receiving.

What are your memories of this match and the storytelling surrounding it? What are some of your favorite Ashley matches? Let us know your memories of Ashley Massaro in the comment section!!

Mickie James releases new woman empowerment song

Mickie James is well known by wrestling fans due to her striking and technical abilities in the ring. Her accolades in the ring are proven by her many championship reigns throughout many promotions. Many “Hardcore Country” fans may already know of her activities outside of the ring. Her career as a country music singer is often overlooked.

James is a 20-year veteran on lacing up her wrestling boots, but few know that she also laces up her cowboy boots. She started releasing music in 2010 which makes her a 9-year country musician. As of last week, she has released a music video for her new song, “I Don’t Give A.”

In her video, she brings her sassy personality to light with a tune that empowers women to stand up for themselves. She brushes off a bar patron who attempts to hit on her with a “get your hands up off my shoulder” line that strikes down unwanted advances. This track has a perfect summertime feel for those who correlate their music to seasons.

Her music highlights a strong independent woman quality that she brings to her in-ring character as well. Past songs that encompass this feeling include “Hardcore Country” and “Somebody’s Gonna Pay.” While part of Total Nonstop Action (TNA) Wrestling she incorporated “Hardcore Country” as her entrance theme song.

The “Somebody’s Gonna Pay” music video features former WWE Women’s Champion Trish Stratus as a butt-kicking bartender and James’ now husband former TNA World Heavyweight Champion – Magnus.

What are your thoughts on Mickie James’ new song? Would you like WWE to incorporate her music more into her gimmick? Let us know what you think in the comment section below!

Five women who would benefit from a Royal Rumble victory

Royal Rumble

As the end of the year concludes and the excitement of a new year approaches, WWE starts the road to WrestleMania. The road to what many consider the Super Bowl of wrestling has always started with the first pay-per-view of the year. Since 1988, the Royal Rumble has been that event and a staple for WWE. The Royal Rumble match is arguably one of the highest anticipated matches of the year. Until earlier this year, only three women participated in this style of match; Chyna, Beth Phoenix, and Kharma.

For the ever-evolving women’s division, another first happened this past January. The first-ever women’s Royal Rumble match saw 30 women battle it out for their shot at the title of their choice. The winner will face the champion at WrestleMania.

Asuka emerged victorious as she last eliminated Nikki Bella to continue her then undefeated streak. She went on to face Charlotte Flair in a SmackDown Women’s Championship match at WrestleMania. Her 914-day undefeated streak came to an end.

Asuka was expected by most to win this first-ever Rumble match. She was far from an underdog in her current place on the roster. Although her streak was defeated, she did have her WrestleMania moment.

There are two types of competitors that are looked at when determining a winner of the Rumble.

A first option for the winner of this match could be one whom continues to ride high in the division, such as Asuka was earlier this year. The second option is having the winner be either a dark horse, or someone who has been away from the title picture for a long time. Both of these choices could propel a competitor forward as the number one contender at WrestleMania.

Most fans expect to see Lynch face Rousey at WrestleMania next year, ever since their Survivor Series match was canceled. With both being current champions, where does that leave the winner of the Rumble? Most are under the impression that both current champions Ronda Rousey and Becky Lynch will still have their gold come the Royal Rumble and WrestleMania.

With an ever-growing main roster, many women would benefit from a win from the Royal Rumble match. In anticipation for next months match, here is a list of five women who would benefit the most from winning.

WWE Women’s Division really want Tag Team Championships

On this week’s episode of Raw, Sasha Banks and Bayley were featured in a segment with new Raw Women’s General Manager, Alexa Bliss. During the open forum, Bliss was fielding questions, and during one of the question and answers, Bayley and Sasha Banks hinted that they want to be the first-ever WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions.

Back in march Diva Dirt’s Landon Buford spoke to Bayley prior to the Raw and SmackDown Live invasion of Dallas, and asked her if she thought it was time for the company to implement tag team titles for both brands.

“I have said this a couple of times in past interviews, but I think it has been discussed as far as the women in the locker room. The women’s division is strong on both Raw, Smackdown, and NXT, and I think we would be able to highlight a lot of us in a tag team. Maybe it is not too far off, as we already had the opportunity for a lot of firsts this year. I do not think it is too crazy to believe that there will be a women’s tag team division pretty soon.”

Back in October, Buford also spoke to both Mickie James and Naomi about the leaked match card before WWE Evolution, which had the Tag Team Title match featured it in.

“Now they are putting three women’s matches on the show, but aside from a personal issue, the only thing that is valuable to grab a hold of is the Raw and SmackDown Women’s Championships. There can only be one person going after those championships at a time, in the reality of things. So, what is it that will give everyone a different way of fighting and getting more camaraderie and storylines?  In the same way that they do with the men who have the tag team championships, the Universal Championship. They have a plethora of championships and storylines to be able to go after, where the women only have one per show,” said James.

She would continue:

“I think the tag team championships, even if it’s just one belt that’s then defended on both shows, but you have the IIconics now that are coming up. Think about it, like when Layla and Michelle were together, it would have been a great storyline when they were with the company. Or Alicia Fox and I can be the veteran team in the division. It would just give everyone, I think, a different catalyst for things, too, and ideas from different stories. Storylines could also spawn off from those stories. It would also show how diverse the women’s division could be, because tag team wrestling is a whole different dynamic. You would be building towards different moments than there are in singles competition.”

I’m so ready for it, tag teaming is so exciting, and it’ll be great for the division, because it will give us another championship to fight for, which we need. Being married to a tag team specialist, and in my opinion, one of the best to ever do it, I will have all the coaching and guidance I need to be the first to hold those titles,” said Naomi.

Naomi would continue by even naming who she would like to win the titles with:

Asuka!  We have a lot in common, surprising, and she’s just badass inside that ring point-blank period. There are no holes in her game. If there’s anyone I could learn from, grow with, and dominate with, it’s her.

Recently, Lana was interviewed by Nerdist’s Fangirling host Markeia McCarty, and spoke about her desire to implement them in the women’s division while dishing on WWE’s all-women’s pay-per-view Evolution.

The discussion of implementing Women’s Tag Team Championships is an ongoing decision, and is something the Superstars and the WWE Universe want to see. The Superstars have even started the hash tag . The last time a hash tag campaign was started was #GiveDivasAChance, which demanded Divas, now Superstars, the opportunity of longer matches.

There’s no telling when, or if, WWE will ever implement them, but Tables, Ladders, and Chairs: TLC would be the perfect opportunity to debut them. Especially, since it is a pay-per-view made famous by The Hardy Boyz, The Dudley Boyz, and Edge and Christian.

WWE TLC will air on Sunday, Dec. 16, streaming live starting at 6 p.m. EST, on the WWE Network.

The importance of a WWE midcarder

WWE has been ridiculed at times for having trouble with their efforts of midcard storylines and matches for their women roster. A midcarder in wrestling is defined as, a wrestler who is seen as higher than a lowcarder, but below a main-eventer, who is often wrestling for the secondary title of a federation. The current … Read more
