THE DIVAS KICK OFF WWE AXXESS IN STYLE

On Thursday March 25th, the WWE fan-friendly Axxess sessions started in the Phoenix Convention Center and the WWE Universe came out in full force. The event was sold out and you could tell people are really excited for this entire weekend. For those of you who haven’t seen what attractions are at Axxess check out WWE.com and they run down the list. Honestly, it is pretty impressive and can be a lot of fun as long as you don’t mind waiting in long lines. (It’s a little like Disney World, you probably need several days to do everything there).

Like I said, the event was sold out Thursday night and most people think that was because John Cena and Bret Hart were the featured guests, but I’m pretty sure it is because Beth Phoenix was scheduled to appear. Beth was the first Diva out and spent the next two hours taking pictures with several hundred people (props to anybody who can wear high heels and stand up for 2 hours while STILL smiling!) Beth was super nice to everybody and seemed to enjoy herself. I felt pretty good about meeting her again because I didn’t 1) pass out, 2) start crying, or 3) ask her to elope with me. (Honestly, the only reason I didn’t ask her to elope with me is that I heard a rumor that “married guys with 2 kids” are not Beth’s type). So it was a pretty successful night. The only downside, I was pretty woozy for the next 60 minutes and missed the chance to get Gail Kim’s pic/autograph. There are still several days to go however, and we’ll track her down at her next signing.

Hall of Fame Hopefuls: Four Women WWE Should Induct

Being inducted into the Hall of Fame is one of the most prestigious honors a wrestler can achieve and in this business there is no bigger Hall of Fame than that of the WWE’s. Over the years, many amazing superstars of the sport have enjoyed their night including three of wrestling’s most talented women. The Fabulous Moolah, Sherri Martel, and Mae Young have all enjoyed getting immortalized in the WWE Hall of Fame and this year, Wendi Ritcher will have the same privilege. Ritcher’s accomplishments certainly speak for themselves and every Diva fan will enjoy watching on Saturday as Wendi Ritcher takes her rightful place among wrestling’s elite. Wendi Ritcher isn’t the only one with the credentials to be in the WWE Hall of Fame. We’ve seen many women come and go over the years and quite a few have made enough of an impact to be considered Hall of Fame worthy. This column is going to take a look at who could potentially be the next four women to enter into the WWE Hall of Fame. Three of these should be a given, one is a bit of a long shot. All of them have reasons as to why they could be considered Hall of Fame material.

Joanie “Chyna” Laurer’s chances of getting into the WWE Hall of Fame range slightly higher than unlikely. With Vince McMahon proving he can bury the hatchet with people he’s had problems with in the past, Chyna could very well end up in the Hall of Fame someday. She was one of the biggest Superstars, male or female, of the Attitude Era, and she was the true definition of sexy, smart, and powerful. Chyna was one of the first WWE Divas to grace to pages of Playboy and she was also the first Diva to break down the gender barriers in World Wrestling Entertainment. She debuted for the company in February of 1997 after being pursued by both WCW and WWE. Chyna started off as a mere valet/bodyguard to Hunter Hearst Helmsley and eventually became a part of Degeneration X. When her DX days were over, Chyna emerged as a singles star and became the first woman to ever compete in the Royal Rumble, hold the Intercontinential Championship, and qualify for the King of the Ring tournament. She had memorable and feuds with Chris Jericho, the late Eddie Guererro, and Ivory. During her time in World Wrestling Entertainment, Chyna was embraced by fans, male and female, and looked to as a role model for her ability to never back down from a fight or challenge. She was also a one-time Women’s Champion.

Chyna departed the WWE for personal, real-life reasons, and those reasons are the ones that could stop her from achieving Hall of Fame status. Her post-WWE career has been less than memorable and it’s fair to say it’s sort of been a trainwreck. She’s had numerous substance abuse problems, a failed relationship with another trainwreck, Sean “X-Pac” Waltman, and a sex tape that the majority of us wish we could erase from our memories. It’s a miracle that Joanie Laurer hasn’t become another sad wrestling statistic and so many people hope to see this woman pull herself together. It’s never too late for a person to get their life back on track and for all we know Chyna could be doing just that. What matters to this article is that if any Diva or woman in wrestling deserves Hall of Fame status, it’s Chyna. She opened doors for women in the mainstream wrestling world that had never before been open. If not for Chyna and her determination to work her hardest to become a success, us fans may never have gotten to see Beth Phoenix compete in this year’s Royal Rumble. Chyna’s truly a trailblazer for the sport and it’s interesting to ponder of what could have been had she not left the WWE under such messy circumstances. Who knows how many more accolades we could have added to her Hall of Fame worthy career.

MR. GLAMAZON MEETS THE GLAMAZON AT THE WWE ART AUCTION

On Wednesday March 24th, the WWE kicked off WrestleMania week by hosting the 3rd annual WWE Art Show at the magnificent Montelucia Resort & Spa in Paradise Valley, AZ. The weather was perfect and the resort was set in the Arizona hills – a great backdrop for the event which served as a fund raiser for the Make-a-Wish Foundation. I loved the Art Show last year in Houston so I was pretty excited! (Random note… we’re checking in at the hotel before the Art Show and standing right next to us: the “Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase! Then, out by the pool – Triple H and Steph (with their private security). Not a bad start to the week!)

Fans cheered while the WWE Superstars and Divas arrived on the red carpet and met with the local press. There was a nice list of WWE Superstars at the event: The Miz (who got a HUGE pop), Jerry Lawler, the Hart Dynasty, Cryme Time, Santino, Hornswoggle, Tony Atlas, Slam Master J (celebrating his birthday), Matt Striker, Tony Garea, and the true star of the night, Bret Hart. Bret got a great reaction from the crowd and seemed genuinely touched. (In general he seems to be enjoying this run through the WWE, and as a former Hitman mark, that makes me smile.)

WrestleMania Rewind: Lita Gets Involved in TLC Match at WM17

Over the next few days, in the lead up to this Sunday’s big WrestleMania 26 event, we’ll be taking a look back at some of the memorable moments in WrestleMania history that involved the WWE Divas. Each of the Diva Dirt team have picked a moment that they loved to share with you all. Today, it’s Erin’s WrestleMania rewind.

Erin: My moment is a little unconventional in the sense that it’s not technically a Diva moment. It wasn’t a Diva match, nor did it feature more than one Diva. However, I feel that it was one of the most exciting moments in my memories of WrestleMania. This moment is the Tables, Ladders, and Chairs match from WrestleMania X7, and for a long time it has been one of my favorite matches based merely on the excitement and sense of importance you felt while watching each team take a beating via the aforementioned tables, ladders, and chairs. Only one Diva, of course, was fit to stick her nose in this match, and that was Lita. She was the Diva most capable of standing toe-to-toe with the guys (barring Chyna, I suppose) in this risky environment, and from taking on the likes of Edge, Rhyno, and the Dudleyz, she certainly got enough ring time for not even being a legal participant in the match. I was pretty young and new to wrestling when I saw this match, so I was especially thrilled to pieces to see a woman get so involved in what was strictly a “men’s” match. This moment was the embodiment of what made Lita so popular, in my opinion–she traded blows with the guys (with steel chairs, nonetheless), pulled off jaw-dropping moves, and was entirely capable of taking a beating herself. If only a Diva these days could make such a mark on a big-time WrestleMania match.

Raw Redux (March 22nd, 2010): A Waste of 50 Seconds & 10 Women

This week’s Raw brought up a lot of questions, none of which relate to anticipation towards WrestleMania or the future of the Divas division. The questions were more akin to “Why did I watch all of Raw for a 50 second match?” and “What’s on HBO? (Answer: Spider-Man)“. Needless to say, tonight’s events were a bit of a mind boggling clusterfuck, and not just because there were approximately 34 Divas at ringside for the match of varying brand loyalty. After last week’s 1-minute long match, I jokingly suggested on Twitter that this week’s match try and beat that “record”. Sadly, I believe they did, and in quite an embarrassing fashion, too. Behold:

skip to 4:50

We begin in a promising, though confusing fashion, with Gail Kim, Beth Phoenix, and Eve Torres in the ring with Mickie James (welcome back!) and Kelly Kelly at ringside. It’s pretty interesting to see Beth alongside the “good girls”, not to mention in the mix of Raw at all. Then come Maryse, Michelle McCool, and Layla, flanked by Vickie Guerrero and Alicia Fox. It’s a bit confusing, this brand crossover, especially since they haven’t even explained why it’s happening yet. This specific scenario seems like way too many “cooks in the kitchen”, in a manner of speaking, but if they were putting so many Divas at ringside at once, something interesting has to happen, right? Or so you’d think..

Gail and Michelle start off the match for their teams, Michelle kicking things off with a kick (*rimshot*), wrenching Gail’s arm. Gail twists is back and nails Michelle with the back of her elbow. She leaps up and hits a frankensteiner, nailing Michelle in the corner, trading blows with her through the ropes. She leaps over the ropes and nails Michelle with a clothesline, going for the pin and getting a 2-count. Gail preps for the Eat Defeat but Layla distracts her, allowing Michelle to go for a leg sweep. Gail counters it into a pin, but Michelle flips the pin into one of her own, but instead holding Gail and switching into a standing position, nailing the Faith Breaker in a clever reversal. She gets the pin and the win for her team.

And just like that, it’s over. Lasting a whopping 50 seconds (Beating last week’s speed record by 10 seconds; what is this, a luge race?), this is apparently what we get when we have 10 women at ringside in a cross-brand exchange on the very last Raw before WrestleMania. Was it a victim of poor time management by the WWE or just a resounding lack of effort by the bookers? It really felt like a segment with ambitions of taking up 10 minutes that was snipped down to a 1 measly minute. Either way, it’s embarrassing and makes you wonder why they even tried. It’s embarrassing and awkward for all the Divas to mosey on out to the ring, only to be worthy of a minute of screen time. I mean, what was the point of putting them all out there, besides getting some meager face time? And, by the way, why haven’t they even EXPLAINED what the SmackDown girls are fucking doing on Raw in the first place??

What message does that send when the promos building up to the John Cena/Batista “face off” lasted longer than this whole segment? Clearly, like we’ve been saying for what seems like forever, the Divas are on a whole different level of priority to the WWE’s writers. That is to say, Cena and Dave are on the top floor, and the Divas are somewhere underneath the floorboards.

SmackDown Redux (March 19th, 2010): Glamazon’s Quest for Gold Continues

The Glamazon, Beth Phoenix inched ever closer to the coveted Women’s Championship on this week’s Friday Night SmackDown as she delivered an all-mighty Glam Slam on the current champ, Michelle McCool. The Glamazon’s mega momentum was overshadowed, however, by a post-match announcement for next week’s show. Watch below:

This week’s Divas action saw the aforementioned Phoenix and McCool in tag team action; Phoenix teamed with the newcomer Tiffany and McCool with her Simply Flawless team mate, Layla. ‘Flawless’, known for subjecting Mickie James to rather painful ‘Piggie James’ jibes, unveiled their latest campaign this week against Beth Phoenix with t-shirts reading ‘Glam-a-Man?’ Stay classy, WWE.

We kick off the match with Phoenix and Layla. Layla attempts to fight the powerful Glamazon with some kicks to the legs but Beth picks her up with great ease, hoisting her in the air for an airplane spin and drops her back down to the canvas. This leads to a really funny moment with Layla, who is easily the best comedienne among the Divas, trying to make a tag to her tag team partner [“Ohhhh Michellllllllle”] only to find out that she’s in the wrong corner. As she gathers her surroundings, she walks right into a clothesline from Phoenix who then tags out to Tiffany.

Tiffany hits a really nice crossbody from the middle turnbuckle and goes for a pin but Layla kicks out. She then hits Lay with a rather weak elbow but then hits another one which looks much better. Tiffany then goes for a suplex which to me, looked a little slow and Layla landed awkwardly rather than nice and flat. Another near fall.

Raw Redux Does WWE Superstars (March 18th, 2010): Bravo, Bellas

Last night’s episode of WWE Superstars saw The Bella Twins return to action from yet another hiatus, and I don’t know about you but it looks as though they’ve improved from the last time we saw them. Perhaps their mom, dubbed the ‘Bella Mom’, who is in attendance proved to be a lucky charm? The Bellas took on the veteran team of Jillian and Katie Lea in tag team action. Watch below:

Before the match, we see Katie Lea cutting a rare promo in her cute British accent before being cut off by Jillian who breaks into a rendition of Britney Spears’ ‘3’. She, of course, is interrupted by the Bellas’ entrance and we have ourselves a match.

Bella #1 starts things out with Katie Lea. The two lock up before Katie slams Bella to the canvas and goes for a quick pin but to no avail. Katie hits a scoop slam and goes for an elbow drop but the twin moves out of the way. The twin then applies an armlock on Katie and hits a beautiful arm drag running up the turnbuckles. She then tags out to Bella #2 who hits a sunset flip on Katie.

Katie begins taking control of Bella #2 with a knee to the stomach and throws her into the corner however the twin counters with a jumping snapmare. Katie kicks out of a near fall and takes control again, shoving the Bella into her corner and tagging out to Jillian. Jillian throws the twin against the ropes but she counters with a kick to Jillian’s face and throws her into the corner for a well executed monkey flip, meanwhile tagging back out to Bella #1. The Bellas hit a double clothesline but Jillian kicks out of a pin fall.
