WWE & TNA House Show Rundown: Results from September 1st-4th, 2011

14

Having trouble keeping up with all of the mainstream women’s wrestling that takes place off TV? Well fear no more! Diva Dirt has got your back with the House Show Roundown! Without any further ado, let’s kick things off!

This week, all three shows had a big workload with a string of live events. This is pretty much a batch of the same matches we’ve been seeing for a while, but over on the Raw side, it was WWE Divas Champion, Kelly Kelly squaring off against top contender, Beth Phoenix. SmackDown, while on a tour of France, provided its Divas fix with Natalya facing Alicia Fox. Finally Impact Wrestling pit Knockouts Champion, Mickie James, against Winter. Check out the results below!

WWE SmackDown in Geneva, Switzerland

“Strong Divas match.” (Source)

Impact Wrestling in Burton, Ohio
Mickie James def. Winter
“Mickie successfully defended the title, beating Winter with a leaping DDT. This was the match of the night as far as I was concerned. The crowd was into the action and it was a pleasure to see the ladies be themselves and go at it in a less-controlled environment.” (Source)

Saturday September 3rd

WWE Raw in Trenton, New Jersey
Kelly Kelly def. Beth Phoenix (Source)

WWE SmackDown in Paris, France
Alicia Fox def. Natalya
“This was the first instance of the French crowd not knowing who was face and who was heel. Natalya played a complete babyface by the end of the match. There were a couple of dodgy spots on Fox’s part, but, overall, this was a good Divas match.” (Source)

Thoughts: Nothing much to say this week really. All matches we’ve been seeing lately, but it builds chemistry so it’s being done for a good purpose. Hopefully with all of these matches Kelly & Beth are having, it will help them out at Night of Champions to put on an even better bout than their Summerslam showing. All in all, an expected weekend of the house show results.

Lilian Garcia Discusses Memories of 9/11, Recalls Performing on SmackDown Two Days After

6

With the 10th anniversary of 9/11 this Sunday, our friends at IWantWrestling.com have gathered several former WWE employees who were with the company at the time to pay tribute and discuss what it was like being on the road with the company on that fateful day.

Amongst the interviewees is former WWE ring announcer, the Decade Diva Lilian Garcia, who as we all know, lived in New York until last year.

Lilian sang an emotional rendition of the national anthem just two days after 9/11 on a live tribute episode of SmackDown. That taping was the first public gathering in the US after 9/11.

Speaking on how she found out about the tragedy, Lilian says: “It was in the 7 o’clock hour, I got woken up and I got a phone call and it was like ‘I’m okay, I’m okay’. I was like ‘What? What’s going on?’ It was like, ‘Turn on the TV!’, so I turn on the TV. Now I’m really groggy. I have no idea what was going on. So I see the TV and I see what’s going on. The towers were still up at the time and during my conversation the towers came down and I just remember screaming at the phone, telling them what was going on, that the towers had fallen. I was just in a state of shock. I felt like I was still in a dream.”

Lilian also recalls the tribute episode of SmackDown just two days after and being asked to sing the national anthem on the show: “I do remember that Vince came up to me and asked me to sing the national anthem. I’ll never forget that. […] It was a great honor. It was scary for me too. I knew it was going to be very emotional for me. I was hoping that I could get through it, and I did.”

Garcia continues: “It was a lot on my shoulders, yet I knew that I felt like everything leading up to it and all these times I was able to sing the national anthem before then were… they prepared me for that. I remember just being nervous and being overwhelmed in a way. […] I knew I had to keep it together and just go out and do it because it was going to be a huge, huge moment in all of our lives. […] I’ll never forget standing in the middle of that ring and looking over to the side and seeing all of the WWE Superstars and employees on that ramp. It was just this feeling… I feel like it was yesterday.”

Listen to the interview below:

Lilian also returned to WWE Monday Night Raw earlier this year to sing the national anthem once again the night after it was announced that Osama Bin Laden had been captured. Lilian talks about that performance in an interview with Diva Dirt which you can listen to here.

Karen Jarrett on Becoming VP of Knockouts: “Things Are Gonna Get Very Interesting Around Here”

16

New VP of Knockouts Karen Jarrett is interviewed by Jeremy Borash for TNA’s website. Karen says “things are gonna get very interesting around here” as she takes power of the Knockouts on screen.

Karen, in character, says she wants to upgrade the division. “Look at these girls out there. Trash. They all look like trash. Sluts.”

She also takes aim at Velvet Sky, saying she will be the most difficult Knockout to get in line. “She wants to be me. She wants to look like me.”

Watch the interview below:

Thoughts: It looks like they are trying to make Karen a big personality that bullies the Knockouts and eventually gets her just desserts, perhaps courtesy of Velvet and her new unwilling assistant Traci Brooks. Given that they only have two hours of TV time, however, I’m worried about whether there’s any more TV time to give a potential Karen/Velvet/Traci storyline when they have a Knockouts Championship and Knockouts Tag Team Championships that should get the firs crack at storylines/feuds. Feels like they are trying to accomplish too much, which, ironically, is the complete opposite of WWE often accomplishing too little. Can we have a happy medium?

WWE.com Looks at Maxine’s Return to NXT

17

WWE.com has a feature article about Maxine‘s recent return to NXT.

The former Season 3 rookie has aligned herself with Derek Bateman in a feud with AJ and Hornswoggle.

The article says:

Maxine is back, and apparently she’s a woman on an important mission. But what exactly does this vengeful, fiery former NXT Rookie Diva from Season 3 have in mind for WWE NXT Redemption?

During week 24 of competition, Maxine made a shocking return to Tuesday nights, viciously attacking a vulnerable A.J. from behind moments after A.J.’s beau, Hornswoggle, and Titus O’Neil were taunted out of the ring by Derrick Bateman. Following the attack, Bateman revealed that Maxine was his new girlfriend and “soulmate.”

On her feud with AJ:

When she’s not trying to help Bateman become WWE’s next breakout star, what more can Maxine possibly do to torment A.J.? Make fun of her green Skittles and candy ring exchange with Hornswoggle? Or maybe she’ll pick on the diminutive size of A.J’s boyfriend? The spunky Diva isn’t one to back down from a challenge, and it’s only a matter of time before she takes the fight back to her wicked adversary. For the moment, though, the advantage is all Maxine’s.

NXT continues tonight on WWE.com.

Raw Redux (September 5th, 2011): Natalya Rips Kelly While Beth Becomes Number One Contender

261

This past Sunday, all hell broke lose on Twitter as several of the Divas used the social networking site to their advantage to express their opinions over a certain controversial article posted by WWE.com. To say things got out of hand would be an understatement, but it left us fans on the edge of our seats practically begging the WWE to turn the article into a storyline. While it didn’t necessarily get turned into a storyline, the ‘E mentioned the article and the Divas’ reactions to it which is a huge step for them and the direction of the division itself. Raw continued on with the crowning of a new, yet familiar number one contender and a Night of Champions match was set. Kelly Kelly will take on Beth Phoenix in about two weeks, as Beth defeated Kelly’s BFF Eve Torres in a forgettable match. What wasn’t forgettable about the night was the fact that third-generation Diva, Natalya, absolutely took it to the champ on commentary. Lets take a look at what went down…

The match starts off pretty quickly with Eve and Beth locking up, and Eve falling victim to Beth’s strength. Nonetheless, Eve gets back and goes in for more, and the two girls begin jostling back and forth for position. Eve tries to get Beth in a side-headlock, but Beth sends Eve across the ring and when she comes back off of the ropes, Beth takes her down a hearty clothesline. She goes for a quick cover while the camera stupidly cuts away to shot a Natalya, but Eve is able to bridge out. Beth launches herself in the air, but Eve catches her with her feet while the two girls have their hands still locked together. What happens next is something I can’t really describe because I’m not sure what Eve and Beth were going for. It ends up being a clear botch, but they compensate pretty well with Eve kicking Beth in the stomach, bringing her down, and flipping over for a pretty pin. Beth powers out and both girls get back to their feet. Beth swings wildly at Eve and misses, and the booty-popping Diva takes advantage by nailing Beth with a kick and forcing her back to the ropes with a forearm.

Trying to keep her momentum going, Eve attempts to throw Beth across the ring. It doesn’t work, and Beth uses Eve’s advantage against her and slings her shoulder first into the turnbuckle. Beth gets out of the ring and begins yanking and jerking Eve’s arm, then she takes it and slams it right into the steel. Ouch. We get another shot at commentary so I can’t tell you what happens next, but we cut to the middle of another pinfall attempt. This time is Beth over Eve, but Eve is able to get her shoulder up. Again we go back to a camera shot of Natalya and Kelly, but once we return to the match, Eve gets laid out with an absolutely sick kick to the face. She goes down like a ton of bricks and Beth keeps trying to injure Eve’s already hurt arm.

Eve, bless her, somehow manages to fight back and levels Beth with a kick of her own. She goes back on offense and gets Beth down with a clothesline, then follows it up with a running somersault. She hooks the leg and nearly gets a three count, but Beth is able to kick out. Reckon the jolt of almost losing fires up Beth because she bullies Eve in the corner and starts choking her. Eve fights back and once Beth staggers back, Eve leaps on the bottom rope and tries to nail Beth with a cutesy little kick. The Glamazon ducks and is able to catch Eve in her clutches. She pulls her to the center of the ring while Eve struggles, and ends up laying Eve out with a painful, sloppy looking Glam Slam. Beth picks up the victory and celebrates her win, and Kelly leaves the broadcast area to go check on Eve.

Beth sees this going on and kicks the ropes to get 2K’s attention. Kelly isn’t amused, and the newly crowned number one contender begins to trash talk the current Diva queen. Kelly fires back with words of her own but she is quickly taken out by Natalya, who comes up behind her. The Canadian takes Kelly and slams her head off the apron, then to add insult to injury she jerks her down, causing Kelly to strike the back of her head on the mat. Eve and Kelly wither around on the mat in pain while Natalya and Beth celebrate how awesome they are in the ring.

First, can I just say that Kelly and Natalya looked amazing! I wonder if our favorite shopaholic Diva picked up her gorgeous dress while in Paris this weekend? Any comment, Nattie? Oh, and I want Kelly’s ankle boots.

Now that the superficial comment is out of the way, let me just say that normally I’m not a fan of commentary catfights. This time, I’m glad we had one because Beth and Eve do not mesh well together. I’ll admit that watching the match a second time with Kelly/Nattie on mute made me realize that it wasn’t as bad as I originally thought, but it still wasn’t great. When one girl is selling for the other, the action is great. But when they hook up to try and pull off something flashy things just don’t go well. They aren’t on the same page, timing wise, and that’s unfortunate because Eve and Beth are both great workers. They showed it in what I’m going to call their solo parts of the match. Eve grows on me the more she competes in singles matches and Beth just goes without saying. Unfortunate match with a predictable outcome but the commentary and post-match shenanigans were great.

I kind of wish it was Natalya who was going to get the chance to challenge at Night of Champions because she’s just such a phenomenal heel. The girl oozes sass and attitude, and of course I appreciate that. Either way, Beth and Kelly have already proved they can bring it at a pay-per-view and I’m looking forward to seeing part two. I loved their match at SummerSlam and I’m hoping that this one will be even better. Congratulations to Beth on her victory.

But that wasn’t all. The Bella Twins, Brie and Nikki, fresh from their Twitter controversy on Sunday, were in a backstage segment with WWE Champion Alberto Del Rio.

This one doesn’t really need any commentary, does it?

Until next week, Cryssi out.

After being introduced to the Berwyn crowd by Rebecca Knox, the Knights quickly became one of the most talked about participants in the Vols. 37-40 weekend, due in large part to the unforgettably intimidating presence of 20 year ring veteran Saraya Knight.

WWE.com Follow Up Story to ‘That Article’, Comments from Eve and Bella Twins

154

Capitalizing on yesterday’s drama surrounding the “Does the Divas division need saving?” article, WWE.com now has a follow-up featuring comments from Brie and Nikki Bella, as well as Eve Torres.

The article states: “That was until WWE.com ran a feature that, in the eyes of some WWE Divas, gave unnecessary credence to the battle cry of Beth & Natalya. Outraged over the piece, Kelly, Eve and The Bellas took to their Twitter accounts on Sunday afternoon to voice their displeasure. When WWE.com caught up with them in Columbus, Ohio hours before Raw was set to go live, the Divas were still furious.”

Eve told the website: “The truth is people who have not been in our position and are not here living the life we do have no idea what we go through as Divas.”

“They lump certain Divas together as ‘model Divas.’ The truth is, I was never a model. I have an engineering degree. I can be somewhere else, but I chose to be here and I chose to fight for the Divas division every week.”

Meanwhile, Nikki commented: “I think what first set us off was saying that the world cringed when Brie won the [Divas Championship]. Actually, no they didn’t — at all.”

Brie adds: “People can’t stand the fact that, yes, we were models, but now we can kick anyone’s butt in the ring. That’s pretty much what it comes down to.”

Brie then goes on to claim that she and Nikki have worked harder than Beth and Natalya. “We’ve actually worked harder than them, because we didn’t come from a wrestling background.”

You can read the full article here.

Thoughts: No doubt that this will do little to calm the tensions amongst the Divas and from the fans. In fact, it could fuel it even more. By continuing the drama on Dot Com, I would hope that they’re turning it into a storyline and capitalizing on the fact that everyone is talking about the Divas. Are these comments a ‘work’?

What do you think about the Bellas and Eve’s latest comments?

A THQ employee on Twitter has confirmed that Divas Rosa Mendes and Tamina will not be part of the upcoming WWE ’12 video game, either on the main roster or as downloadable content.

Responding to fans on Twitter, @THQ_Tank responded to a question about Rosa being in the game: “Rosa Mendes is not in the game this year, she is a @WWE beautiful diva, we’ll see for next year.”

Later responding to a question about Tamina and the Usos, he said: “No, apologies.”

THQ previously confirmed that more Divas will be available as downloadable content. It looks like that’ll include Alicia Fox and the Bella Twins.

Rosita on NBC’s “Children of 9/11” Tonight, Watch A Clip…

4

As a reminder: Impact Wrestling’s Rosita will be on NBC’s “Children of 9/11” tonight.

The documentary follows children who lost their parents during 9/11 who have gone onto accomplish their dreams. The official press release reads:

[notice]On September 11, 2001, over 3000 children lost a father or a mother. They come from many different walks of life, but are united by a terrifying shared experience. On Monday, September 5th at 10 pm ET, NBC will present “Children of 9/11,” a riveting special which gives a voice to the young people directly affected by this terrible event. The special follows a year in the lives of some of these children, watching them overcome the loss and turn their lives around, by achieving ambitions that would make their parents proud.

For the first time, this special gives a voice to the young people directly affected by 9/11. A bitter twist of fate has indelibly linked their childhood to the worst terrorist attack of modern times. As the film interweaves their stories, home movie footage creates intimate portraits of the families, both before and after the event. Powerful interviews reveal the tough and inspiring personal journeys that the children have taken.[/notice]

Rosita — real name Thea Trinidad — lost her father when she was just 10 years old during the attacks.

Now 20, Rosita is a current TNA Knockout and former Knockouts Tag Team Champion.

The press release features this heartbreaking log-line about Rosita’s story: “The special follows a year in the lives of 11 children from six families across America, including Thea Trinidad, who at 10 years old couldn’t understand why her father was calling to say goodbye.”

As we previously reported, NBC filmed Rosita’s TNA tryout which took place this past January for this documentary.

The documentary will be narrated by Law & Order star, Mariska Hargitay.

Brie Bella Says She Knows How Fans Feel About Divas Division, Mentions Released Divas & Sara Del Rey

103

Former Divas Champion Brie Bella is the latest Diva to weigh in on today’s Diva drama.

Following sister Nikki‘s feisty retaliation to a WWE.com article posted earlier today, Brie took a softer approach, saying she knows how fans feel when it comes to the Divas division and even mentioned the names of several released Divas and Sara Del Rey.

She wrote on the twins’ Twitter page:

Wow, I just woke up to the craziness! The words spoken by Katie are laughable, but I’m a women who will stand for what I believe in…so…

I know what I’ve given to the fans and that’s all what matters. WWE might think your a bunch of puppets that are persuaded by their words..

I know how you all feel :) good and bad, I love it! I mean if WWE cared about Divas why do we have such little time on tv?

Why were divas such as Mickey James, Melina and Gail Kim released. Why aren’t wrestlers like Sara Del Ray hired? All amazing!…….

Kelly Kelly and myself have worked to hard to have an unknown, untalented writer say the things she did. Katie (whoever) [author of the article] Suck it! Love Brie

Thoughts: I have to agree with Brie on tweets 2, 3 and 4. She definitely said what the fans are thinking and her knowledge of Del Rey gets a +1. However, the article in question didn’t necessarily give the author’s personal opinion, rather stated what fans were thinking. I think everyone needs to really read over that article again. The author doesn’t try to diss Kelly or Brie, or the success they’ve had, but does state that some of WWE’s ‘purist’ Diva fans took offense.

Eve & Kelly: Voices of Reason

With the storm calming down, Eve Torres and Divas Champion Kelly Kelly added some extra two cents regarding the whole brouhaha surrounding WWE.com’s article on the Divas.

Eve wrote on her Twitter:

And trust that that’s not taking anything away from @natbynature or @thebethphoenix. Everyone is equally dedicated to taking the Divas division to the next level!

Meanwhile, Kelly tweeted:

#divas we’re just doing what we love, entertaining every week. We’ve all worked very hard to get here. just wish all this hate would go away.

Thoughts: Again, I feel the article was about the storyline and the reactions it has received from ‘purist’ fans. I don’t think it’s a diss to any of the women and how hard they’ve worked.

The Bella Twins’ Mom & Brother Weigh In…

26

Like a good mama bear protecting her cubs, the Bella Twins’ mom Kathy Colace has weighed in on the storm surrounding the article posted on WWE.com earlier today.

On her Twitter page, Kathy wrote:

@thebellatwins @RealKellyKelly @EveMarieTorres How embarrassing that WWE allows one of their own writers dis a division they have built.

Meanwhile, the twins’ brother JJ Garcia, also wrote on his Twitter page:

#BellaArmy WWE is hating on the @thebellatwins when they are the most athletic and beautiful divas let @WWE know what you think #BellaArmy

Tweeting the author of the article, WWE.com’s Katie Raymond, he added:

how do you even have a job under minding the diva division.Who talks shit on there own company Pretty pathetic for your company

Thoughts: Normally, I would agree that WWE is undermining/dissing its own division, but I feel the WWE.com article (perhaps not some of the Twitter responses from the Divas) was to push the storyline. Most of the articles on WWE.com continue storylines. Besides, I think WWE has done worse to diss the division they’ve built i.e. having Michael Cole interrupt matches.

And let’s not lose sight of the fact that the article did clearly state that the Divas division does not need saving.

Wow @WWE definitely woke up 2 an embarrassing article you wrote… Well u wanted to know everyone’s thoughts @WWEUniverse, Here’s Nikki B’s…

First off…. Um you want me to slap you with all of my awards and championships I have won? I was a #1 athlete… Which other Diva was?

Secondly, Bri & @RealKellyKelly have been the only entertainment that has happened 2 the Diva’s Division & have worked harder than anyone!

Thirdly, I’ve seen 2 girls the past few weeks try as hard as they can to be “models” while us “models” have busted our butts…..

Oh and good luck with the up and coming Divas…. Sure you’ll make a lot of money with them…. Um actually NOT!

Lastly, @RealKellyKelly & Us are better than anyone in the past so Katie Raymond check your self and come read this article to my face! NB

Did you get all that?

Thoughts: We knew that the article was going to ruffle some feathers, but Nikki’s reaction is perhaps the most entertaining yet. Of course the Divas can say they’re acting in character and get away with it, but with a situation like this, you have to think that the comments are somewhat personal too. However, instead of pitting the ‘model Divas’ against the ‘wrestler Divas’, perhaps we should direct our attention to the real issue — the way WWE uses them. There’s no reason why they can’t all have interesting storylines, feuds and matches. WWE does its best, for some reason, to restrict the potential that all of the Divas have.

Vince McMahon Promises Mae Young a Match When She Turns 100!

Yes, you read that right.

WWE Hall of Famer Mae Young, who competed in a match on Raw last year at the ripe old age of 87, has revealed that Vince McMahon has promised her a match to celebrate her 100th birthday.

PWTorch reports that Mae is quoted in the latest WWE Magazine as saying: “I plan on wrestling when I’m 100. My grandmother lived to be 113, so I figure I can make it into the ring when I’m 100. Vince promised me a match with his daughter, Stephanie, and his granddaughter, Aurora Rose, when I’m 100-years-old. I’ve got to live to see that.”

Mae celebrated her 88th birthday in March. Only 12 more years to go…
