The Inaugural Diva Dirt Best & Worst Dressed List

bestworstdressed

It’s a staple of tabloid magazines: hard hitting, investigative & highly entertaining! Best & Worst Dressed lists can make or break careers in Hollywood and for a site with ‘Dirt’ in the title, it’s only fitting we take this time tested feature & apply it to our Divas! Each week we’ll bring you the best and worst looks from the week gone by, it’s pretty simple right?

Key: School-like grading scheme

Congratulations to Maryse, Lauren, Jenna Morasca (sort of), Alissa Flash, Melina & Michelle McCool for making our inaugural ‘Best’ list. It’s not just about the clothes you wear, it’s about the way you accessorize it and the way you do your hair too. These Divas and Knockouts displayed sexy, smart and well-rounded outfits this week.

Beginning with Maryse, a Diva who brings the sex appeal to any outfit she sports. Our Divas Champion opted for a slinky black dress this week, with an off-the-shoulder look. Finishing off with an aptly fitting belt and the most gorgeous pair of gladiator sandals ever. This girl knows how to accesorize and never over-does it. Grade: A

Meanwhile, TNA’s in-house correspondent Lauren looked sassy yet classy in a shoulderless black top and jeans. A simple look, but it’s in her accessorizing and hair that Lauren really pulls it altogether. The oversized long necklace adds a little more jazz to the simple looking top, while her hair looks effortlessly tied up. B+

Third on our Best list is Jenna Morasca, shockingly enough. Following her trashy look at Victory Road [more on that later], Jenna pulled it together for Impact this past Thursday with a cutesy look. I like the fun, vibrant loose-fitting top over the leggings. But the big plus is her hair, super sleek and straight with bangs on show. C

Both of our new TNA Knockouts make it onto this week’s list, but thankfully for Alissa Flash she makes it onto the good half. Ditching the uncomplimentary yellow from last week, Alissa looked more comfortable in her peachy/orange attire this week combined with a nice ring jacket. But it’s the hair & makeup I’m loving the most, the streaks of colour around her eyes is a nice look that I’d like to see her continue in coming weeks, using a colour that matches her attire that week. And her bouffant-esque hairstyle looks neat and tidy, which is something this blogger is a big fan of. B

Speaking of hair — our next two entrants are being honoured solely for theirs! Melina and Michelle McCool looked really pretty, Melina with her long straight, luscious locks. She always looks like something out of a shampoo commercial. Meanwhile, Michelle’s hair looks even better up than it does down. She should do it more often! Honourary mention.

Raw Redux (July 20, 2009) – They’ve Got Legs & They Know How to Use ‘Em

raw20july09

Despite tacking on yet another gimmick to the Divas match, Raw managed to pull off a decent match which was dubbed a “Legs Match” with Kelly Kelly, Gail Kim, Alicia Fox & Rosa Mendes wrestling in shorts. Following in the footsteps of last week’s SmackDown, the red brand gave the ‘second string players’ a chance to shine a la Layla, Eve and Natalya on Friday. However unlike SmackDown, Raw also managed to push it’s Night of Champions match in addition to the second string quartet.

Earlier in the evening however, we saw an interesting dynamic in the ‘feud’ between Maryse and Mickie James, when Maryse sprayed a can of what we’re to assume is hairspray in Mickie’s eyes. This feud has never really been dialled up in the past two months that it’s been going on, we just seem to have Maryse avoiding Mickie because ‘she’s scared’ — which to me is just WWE’s excuse for lazy booking, they can’t come up with anything original or exciting. However in the final two weeks before their big pay per view match, we finally see the pace picked up as last week, Maryse pinned Mickie in the ‘Swimsuit Spectacular’ and this week she sprays Mickie in the eyes. What this tells us is that the writers are happy to bore us with teases of Maryse being scared of Mickie for two months and then when as we approach the PPV, go for the hard sell. To me, it’s a case of too little too late and while I’m sure they’ll have a great match on PPV, I’m not as excited as I should be. I don’t feel the personal animosity between them like I should do. Doing a hard sell the Monday before the PPV just comes off as desperate and is extremely transparent.

That said, I enjoyed this segment. It’s funny that WWE’s writers are actually in tune with the fans, as we saw in Mickie’s scripting last night — but yet they still go completely the other way from what we want to see. They had Mickie bring up the fact that Maryse beat her in a ‘Summer Swimsuit Spectacular’, sharing the same distaste for that type of match as the viewers and alluding to the fact that Maryse is an inferior worker which we know to be true. They mock it through Mickie here, yet they continue to book it. Things went downhill from there though, with nursery school rhyming — whichever writer came up with ‘Trampions’ deserves a gold star *Eye roll* Out comes The Miz, Maryse’s rumoured real life boyfriend [hence Vince’s pervy booking] berating Mickie. I know he’s playing a character, but I can’t help but sense that Miz truly does believe what he’s saying. I get the feeling that he and Maryse as a couple would be more narcissistic than Speidi. I liked Mickie’s comeback though, about getting his material off the Internet — coz it’s true! Out comes Maryse in a gorgeous pair of sandals and sprays Mickie in the eyes and does what she does best: flips her hair, smirks and waves her arms around. I heart her mannerisms.

Raw Redux (July 13th, 2009) – Running with Scissors, Wrestling in Bikinis

Last night’s Raw was a scary one, as WWE seemingly found a balance between the throwback T&A and actual wrestling. However, the two don’t quite go together and as the title of this post would suggest, I liken it to ‘running with scissors’. It wasn’t a bikini contest nor was it a respectable wrestling match, … Read more

Raw Redux (June 29, 2009) – Raw Returns to Form?

I have been less than enamored with Monday Night Raw since the Draft in April. You could blame it on lousy booking, little storyline development and average at best in-ring work. But on the night of the 15 Superstar trade, it looks as though Raw has returned to form with an excellent and enjoyable fatal … Read more

Extreme Rules Live Divas Coverage

extreme-rules-1-cr

While the results from the Dark Match at Extreme Rules were posted earlier, I figured I’d give a more in-depth look at the matchup where Beth Phoenix and her intern Rosa Mendes took on Kelly Kelly and Mickie James. The quote I sent to Steven for the previous post was a pretty frantic text message as it was fairly hard to take pictures, record the matchup on video and text all at the same time while making sure I gave Diva Dirt the exclusive results coverage of the match as quickly as my fingers could type, not to mention that moron who spilled his beer on my newly purchased Extreme Rules t-shirt. I was extremely glad the Divas did get a matchup because frankly I was a little upset I paid close to $100 just to see that Hog Pen Match. So here’s my own coverage of Extreme Rules, live from New Orleans, Louisiana, where yours truly got to experience a great event and was in attendance for one of the best PPV’s of the year.

At the very beginning, the matchup was actually pretty confusing. Tony Chimel was the ring announcer for the match, but right before he came into the ring, Lilian Garcia told us we were going to have a special dark match. Once Tony got in the ring, he simply announced the Divas coming to the ring. Rosa’s name wasn’t mentioned in the introduction either. Nobody knew it was even a tag match since we just thought Rosa was coming with Beth to the ring. Kelly Kelly and Mickie James were just introduced as individuals, so we didn’t catch on to it being a tag team match until it actually began. While entering the ring, Beth started doing a wrong pose, which I thought was pretty funny. She started raising her right hand alone and then midway realized she wasn’t supposed to do that and stopped the pose, then raised both her hands in the typical Glamazon stance.

Once the Divas began coming to the ring, my natural instinct was to record the match for everyone here at Diva Dirt to witness. However, about two minutes into the actual match, security caught me recording and came over to me and asked me to stop filming or else my camera would get confiscated. So while I will be getting the video up for you all shortly, it will only take you through the entrances and midway through the match. And yes, I was talking for part of the video so you’ll enjoy that too.

The match began with Kelly Kelly and Rosa Mendes squaring off in the ring. Rosa got the upper hand first, locking in an armbar and twisting Kelly’s arm over and over again. Kelly reversed the armbar into a quick 1-count rollup on Rosa, followed up with a jumping clothesline and a tag to Mickie James. Mickie did a really interesting move where she lifted Kelly up into a modified Glam-Slam and dropped her down on top of Rosa. Mickie locked in some more offense before Rosa countered and put Mickie into another armbar and dragged her over to make the tag to Beth Phoenix, who had been screaming at Rosa the entire time. Beth was really on top of her game tonight and she entered the ring into a stare-down with Mickie before the two started throwing each other around. Beth had most of the offense here on Mickie and Rosa came in for some double teaming on Mickie while the referee was distracted with Kelly. Mickie hit her Lou Thesz press on Beth, then Beth grabbed Mickie and did a huge slam on Mickie which got a huge reaction out of the crowd. Beth tagged Rosa back in and Rosa basically got beaten up by Mickie. Beth was going nuts on the apron stomping and screaming at Rosa while her hair was flying everywhere. I was extremely impressed by Beth in this showing.

Mickie brought Rosa over to her corner and got a tag in to Kelly who came in with a Sunset Flip for a 2 count on Rosa. Kelly then got pushed on to the mat by Rosa and Rosa delivered some big punches to Kelly’s face. Kelly countered Rosa’s Irish Whip in to the corner and did her usual “COME ON!” chant to the crowd, who responded nicely to it while she did her back handspring elbow. Kelly tagged in Mickie who put Rosa in the opposite corner and delivered her twisting leg scissors to Rosa. This brought Beth in who tried to attack Mickie but was tackled and taken out the ring by Kelly. Mickie hit her Mickie-DDT onto Rosa and scored the pinfall.

The Weekly Roundup (May 30 – June 05, 2009) – A Week in Television

weeklyroundup

Welcome to Diva Dirt’s new feature – The Weekly Roundup, a look at the week in television! From Raw, SmackDown, ECW and TNA too, we look back at the week’s highs and lows as well as giving you the opportunity to catch up on what you’ve missed!

MAY 30th – JUNE 5th, 2009

This week has seen some solid TV efforts from WWE, an okay week for TNA and the emergence of women’s wrestling on ROH. This week saw the first time in history that Diva Dirt has covered ROH on HDNet & we’re very happy that we did…

Best Bet: My highlight of the week came from ROH, as it incorporated sister promotion, SHIMMER into it’s broadcast. I have to be honest and say I haven’t really seen much of SHIMMER or any of these girls before but I was thoroughly impressed by the triple threat match on HDNet last Saturday. If you haven’t yet seen it, check it out after the cut – it’s well worth it. I hope ROH does more “SHIMMER Lite” segments in future. (PS: I’m already preferring ROH’s production style to TNA’s rollercoaster sickness style on Impact).

Honourable Mention: Like last week, SmackDown gives us our honourable mention of the week with an outstanding six Divas tag team match.

Low Point: I felt this week’s Impact didn’t see a strong enough followup to last week’s fantastic debut of the former Victoria. Not only has she been renamed ‘Tara’, but she’s also stuck in a one minute segment from a two hour broadcast. Not a good followup at all.

The Weekly Roundup (May 24 – 30, 2009) – A Week in Television

weeklyroundup

Welcome to Diva Dirt’s new feature – The Weekly Roundup, a look at the week in television! From Raw, SmackDown, ECW and TNA too, we look back at the week’s highs and lows as well as giving you the opportunity to catch up on what you’ve missed!

MAY 24th – MAY 30th, 2009

It’s been a positively exhausting seven days for us women’s wrestling fans! From TNA’s Sacrifice pay per view last Sunday to last night’s Friday Night SmackDown. Take a look back at the week that was, with Diva Dirt.

Best Bet: The best moment of the week had to be Victoria‘s TNA debut on Impact, this past Thursday night. We saw a rejuvenated Vicious Vixen looking better than she has in years, make quite the impact on Angelina Love (no pun intended). This moment will surely be a strong contender in the 2009 Year-End Awards.

Honourable Mention: The next top moment came from star-in-the-making, Alicia Fox who got the chance to compete in the ring with the multi-talented, three time Women’s Champion, Melina. Sure she lost, but for a young Diva, working with the champion is one hell of a rub. We predict big things for A-Fox!

Low Point: The disappointing Divas Championship scenario on Raw left a bad taste in my mouth this week. Mickie James looked to be in line for a feud with Maryse, but it now seems Kelly Kelly will get that honour.

Raw Redux (May 18, 2009) – More Finale-Like Drama

To continue the analogy I used in last week’s SmackDown Redux, it looked as though Raw carried over some of that ‘finale week’ drama onto last night’s programme. Last night’s Raw utilised the plotline device of the ‘game changer’, something unexpected that comes out of left-field and makes the viewer go, “Oh my God!” And … Read more

You Know What, Trish? You Got A Good Point.

As we reported here on  Diva Dirt earlier this week, Trish Stratus recently gave her opinion on WWE’s current women’s Division and she didn’t pull any punches.
