Raw Redux – September 29, 2008

This week on Raw: Beth Phoenix regained focus after an upset loss last week, scoring a win over Kelly Kelly and Candice Michelle with her partner Jillian. Plus in intergender action, the Burchills lost to Mickie James & Jamie Noble while Layla and King William Regal looked on.

Thoughts & Reactions
After a lackluster few weeks, things were a little better this week but not enough to make me that interested in this week’s Raw. I liked that Beth got an emphatic win this week, regaining her focus towards the Women’s Championship match at No Mercy. Her win killed two birds with one stone: A) it tied in with her ‘mini-feud’ with Kelly, who got a fluke win over her as Beth pinned Kelly and B) it sent a message to Candice ahead of their title match. I didn’t like that they had Beth and Candice start out the match straight away pretty much giving away their pay per view match, shouldn’t you try and keep them apart and have them get in a hot tag? The whole booking for this ‘feud’ has been lackluster, so why start making sense now! The work was fine for most of the match, but I really wasn’t into the first half of it, it just seemed to plod along between Candice and Beth then Candice and Jillian. Candice continues to look uncomfortable in the ring since her comeback, but she has never really had much ring presence if you ask me.

The interesting dynamic of this match was how would Kelly and Candice work together? Sufficiently, I would say. When the match was announced, I didn’t think this duo would work out, you’d need someone like Mickie to lead the tag team, both these Divas are still learning. They worked together well. One thing I observed which I certainly didn’t expect is that Kelly, who has had less opportunity in the ring than her partner, was the ‘Mickie figure’ in this match. The Diva who got the hot tag, fought off both the opponents etc. while Candice did most of the brunt work for most of the match as the ‘weaker Diva’. You would think, considering WWE considers Candice to be their top Diva, she’d be doing the superhero-like hot tag – especially considering the fact that she has a title match this Sunday. However, I think Kelly worked in the role very well and lit up a match that otherwise plodded along, when Kelly tagged in, things picked up in the way that they usually do when Mickie tags in. I would say Kelly has a certain quality about her and I really picked up on this last night, I can see this girl going really far. To me, she seems to be creeping up on Candice and outdoing her in terms of matches, fan response etc. even though Candice is the one WWE wants to push. I can definitely see Kelly continuing to grow and eventually become the top Diva to succeed Trish which is what Candice had been groomed for. Kelly got way bigger pops than Candice, I’m not usually one to go by the crowd, but it was really hard to miss on Raw last night – Candice even got some boos. Not a slight to Candice, but Kelly has more of a likability factor than the former Women’s Champ and is proving to be more well rounded. It’ll be interesting to see how Candice and Kelly’s careers intertwine and mould around each other, to say the least.

As for the intergender tag match, as always good fun. It was great to see Mickie back on Raw, though I’m happy for her to remain in the background and let other Divas get over. If and I mean only if WWE can somehow work her into this storyline with Jamie Noble and Layla, then I’m all for Mickie to come back as a full time character but after the past few months, I think Mickie has run her course and needs to make sporadic appearances and not be burned out completely. I wouldn’t mind seeing a tease of an eventual match between Noble & Mickie vs Regal & Layla. The three different couples on show during this match made me think I was watching some sort of swingers party lol! Layla and Regal looked really good in that throne =)

All in all, not a bad week for Raw. I do like that we got to see more utilisation of all the Divas, very SmackDown-esque but I don’t think Raw has fully redeemed itself in my eyes. We’ll see what happens at No Mercy and going forth.

WWE.com has changed it’s match description for the Champion vs Champion match between Beth Phoenix and Michelle McCool to a Lumberjack Match, with all the other WWE Divas surrounding the ring. Perfect 10: Week of September 22nd

The Perfect 10 returns! The premise is simple: We will rank the ten Divas or Knockouts who we think have had the best week of television, similar to WWE.com’s Power 25. Who will make the grade and who will fall short? It’s all new and exclusive only at Diva Dirt!

WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 22nd – SEPTEMBER 28th, 2008

10. Candice Michelle (Last Week: #8)
Candice drops two spots to this week’s #8 after a rather unimpressive appearance on Raw. Can the Go Daddy Girl create some sparks by winning the Women’s Championship at No Mercy?

Erin: I don’t get the WWE’s strategy in hiding Candice backstage when she has a Women’s Title match in less than two weeks. This does nothing for her – all it does it remind us that she and Beth are feuding, but two weeks out from the big match, we need much more than that. It doesn’t build hype for the match AT ALL, and it’s kind of ridiculous.
Melanie: Hi Candice, bye Candice..

• • • • • • • •

09. Layla (Last Week: #7)
Layla drops two spots too, coming in at this week’s #9. Layla was a no show on Raw this week, just when she’d been making so much progress.

Erin: I hate when the WWE isn’t consistent with storylines – they need to keep the interest up, and skipping weeks hurts that considerably. People are going to forget that Layla is even with Regal!
Melanie: I miss Layla.

• • • • • • • •

08. Taylor Wilde (Last Week: #6)
Taylor Wilde continues the trend… dropping two spots as well! The Knockouts Champ was nowhere to be seen on Impact.

Erin: So much for being a big-time champion. This shows the lack of excitement around her title reign, and makes me wonder whether or Angel should have won the title at the PPV. I have a feeling things would be a lot more interesting if she had.
Melanie: Taylor is a paper champion, expect her to lose at Bound For Glory.

• • • • • • • •

07. Maria (New Entry)
Maria is a brand new entry on the Perfect 10 this week at #7. The Playboy covergirl scored a pinfall victory over Victoria in tag action.

Erin: She’s getting exposure, but it’s only for the benefit of the new girl – Brie. Once Nicole shows up, where’s Maria going to go? Brie will have a built-in tag team partner, so she won’t need to be buddy-buddy with Maria any longer.
Melanie: I think Maria is finally starting to show improvement the way Michelle, Kelly and Layla did before her. No one said it would happen over night, now a few months on, you can see an improvement. Still has a long way to go.

• • • • • • • •

06. Kelly Kelly (New Entry)
Kelly scored an upset and impressive victory over Beth Phoenix on Raw, giving her a high new entry at #6.

Erin: It’s baffling how Kelly scored a win over Beth, but more power to her! The WWE is obviously pushing her as the ultimate underdog, so if they keep this up in the coming weeks, she’ll build integrity and possibly even surpass Mickie James in her spot as a top babyface. I’m not saying I’m wishing for that to happen, but it looks likely. As they say, out with the old, in with the new..
Melanie: Kelly is a great underdog character, she gets over well with the fans as such anyway.

Candice & Beth to Actually Wrestle Tonight

Tonight’s Raw is set to be the “go home” show for this Sunday’s No Mercy, and with the lack of storyline development in Beth Phoenix & Candice Michelle‘s feud, we’ve been pretty concerned with how they’ll build up this Sunday’s Women’s Championship match. With that in mind, the following match has been announced for Raw … Read more

Hit or Miss?: September 21st – 27th

Welcome to Hit or Miss?! We’ll be examining the week’s news bits and deeming them hits or misses. For instance, did a Diva develop some backstage heat? That’s a miss. What about a Knockout match receiving the highest ratings of the show? That’s a hit. I’ll rate each story by stars (out of 5) – more stars for a hit, less for a miss. Got it? Let’s dive in..

Story #1: Ashley’s gone, but not in every sense..
The upcoming video game release, “RAW vs. SmackDown 2009”, has announced many of its roster, the most surprising of which being Ashley Massaro, whom we all know was released from the WWE some time ago.. Hm.. I wonder how the *current* Divas who are MIA on this game feel about this? (Click for more info.)
Rating:
Hit or Miss?: 1 star makes it a MISS. I’m aware that they plan these video games out verrrryyy far in advance, but it is pretty ironic that when roster space is pretty limited on these games, one of the precious spots will be taken by a Diva who is not only no longer with the company, but also left a bitter taste in many a fan’s mouth. I always think it’s kind of cool to see a Diva all digitized an whatnot, but Ashley looks absolutely atrocious in the game. Seriously – look at the photo above – those makers did her no favors.

Story #2: TNA “Knocked Out” gets.. knocked out.
TNA recently released its “Knocked Out” DVD, solely dedicated to its Knockouts. It featured interviews with each Knockouts, as well as behind-the-scenes looks at photoshoots and stories of their respective paths to TNA. Diva Dirt reviewed the DVD, and it didn’t exactly pass with flying colors.. The main complaint was that TNA seemed to be more concerned with elevating their Knockouts above the Divas – it came across as arrogant and cocky. That, paired with empty and less-than-inspired chapters on each Knockout made us wonder if the DVD was even necessary. (See the original post.)
Rating:
Hit or Miss?: 1 & 1/2 a star makes it a MISS. I appreciate that TNA is looking to push the Knockout brand by releasing this DVD, but I think they should have rounded up some better content. Constant comparisons to “other women wrestlers” does nothing to help theme in fact, it hinders their growth as a separate entity. If I wanted to watch boring character profiles and exhausting self-congratulations, I’d watch the Emmys, thanks..

ECW Does SmackDown Redux – September 23, 2008

The show may change but the Divas stay the same! Welcome to a very special “extreme” edition of SmackDown Redux – ECW Does SmackDown Redux that is! Last night on ECW, Divas Champion Michelle McCool tasted defeat for the first time at the hands of Maryse.

Thoughts & Reactions
For the first time in months, Divas action came to ECW last night! I don’t understand WWE’s logic, is there idea of ‘fresh’ having the same match from last week’s SmackDown but just on a different show? I can’t say I’m complaining too much because the Divas who can do no wrong, Maryse and Michelle McCool did something that Spider-Man or Pirates of the Caribbean could never do – create a perfect trilogy. It’s usually the threequels that let let a trilogy down but not this one! Once again, Michelle and Maryse delivered a great match full of intensity and fire. Would I say it was as good as their match last Friday on SmackDown? No, but let’s face it, that’s a hard one to top! Both girls really did try though and I watched this match with a smile on my face and when it ended, I loved and respected both of them that much more.

This match was more about Maryse playing the aggressor and she was fantastic. We keep saying it, but for someone who’s been wrestling for such a short time, she has not only the moves but the heel mannerisms down to a tee! Maryse has fantastic ring presence as a heel, she knows how to play the crowd and knows how to work her opponent and I have to say, she brings a lot of fire out in Michelle that we’ve never seen before. Many complain about Michelle’s lack of personality and such but if you watch this match, I thought Michelle responded incredibly well to Maryse and these two share an insane chemistry. There’s something almost charming about Michelle taking more of a backseat and jobbing for most of the match, if you’re a face champion, it’s good to look vulnerable to your opponent and then win where it counts – a title match.

To trackback, when you heard this was a non-title match didn’t you just know Maryse was going to win? It’s a good move though, as this sets up Maryse as having earned another title shot against Michelle. In fact, I can actually see Maryse going over Michelle and winning the title in the near future. At this point, I don’t care if we see Michelle vs Maryse every week as long as the calibre is the same as this and their past matches. Great stuff!

Oh and I nearly forgot to mention: the commentary for this match was fantastic. I don’t watch ECW so I never realised how good Matt Striker is, he and JR really put over the Divas and the in-ring action rather than going off on tangents like Raw. Giving focus and attention to what we’re watching really adds to the experience, I really loved the commentary and it definitely added to my viewing.

Review: TNA Knocked Out

Next month, TNA celebrates one year of it’s much celebrated Knockouts division with the release of ‘Knocked Out’, a DVD featuring all of the Knockouts including recently departed Gail Kim and Salinas. It was at Bound For Glory in October 2007 that the division was launched with a 10 woman gauntlet match to determine the first Knockout Champion and this DVD comes precisely one year from that historic event. One could argue that it’s too soon to release a Knockouts DVD but given the reception from both critics and fans alike for this division, this feels like the perfect capitalisation on a hot subject.

From key Knockouts such as ODB and the Beautiful People, the DVD even features the likes of Lauren and SoCal Val, all this interspersed with seminal matches from the division’s one year history including the complete trilogy of matches between Gail Kim and Awesome Kong as well as the Makeover Battle Royal and more. It seems the DVD’s lengthy running time is more made up of these matches than actual Knockout chapters, the likelihood is that the type of fan this DVD aims to reach are the fans who have seen these matches already; it does make for a nice little compilation nonetheless. The DVD’s introduction features comments from the likes of TNA President, Dixie Carter as well as wrestlers Christian Cage, Kurt Angle and Jeff Jarrett which I felt was a nice touch to add to the legitimacy of the Knockouts division – having praise heaped upon it from top tier stars. Carter’s presence on the DVD particularly stood out to me as she touches upon my thoughts, the idea of a female president of a wrestling company. Carter comes across extremely passionate, protective and supportive of this division and so she should; in a male dominated sport Carter is in a position to promote talented women over men and she speaks with conviction in her support of the Knockouts.

Perfect 10: Week of September 15th

The Perfect 10 returns! The premise is simple: We will rank the ten Divas or Knockouts who we think have had the best week of television, similar to WWE.com’s Power 25. Who will make the grade and who will fall short? It’s all new and exclusive only at Diva Dirt!

WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 15th – SEPTEMBER 21st, 2008

10. Jacqueline (New Entry)
She is a veteran among both the Divas and Knockouts, Jacqueline makes her first ever Perfect 10 appearance at #10. Aside from having some teeth knocked out (ouch), Jackie made a splash on Impact by getting into it with Hector Guerrero. Next week, she teams up with Beer Money, Inc. in an intergender tag match against LAX and Guerrero.

Erin: It’s been a while since we’ve heard from Jacqueline, so it’s great to see her mixing it up with the guys like she did in the WWE. She’s completely believable in that “tough girl” role, so I’m sure that inter-gender tag will be one to watch.
Melanie: This is the second intergender match with one woman in as many weeks… But still, Jacqueline is still going strong after all these years!

• • • • • • • •

09. The Beautiful People (New Entry)
Another new entry this week from the TNA Knockouts, the Beautiful People, Angelina Love and Velvet Sky had a rather bad week at the hands of the Knockouts Champion, Taylor Wilde. But all the while, impressing us viewers!

Erin: I guess two heads aren’t better than one. I think in this case, Love and Sky need to get their act together – having Taylor outsmart the two of them makes them look rather weak. Maybe they need to divide and conquer?
Melanie: Sure they always lose, but they’re highly entertaining.

• • • • • • • •

08. Candice Michelle (New Entry)
After dropping off last week’s chart, Candice Michelle is back this time at #8. Candice scored an impressive win over Jillian on Raw, kicking things into gear for her big Women’s Championship match at No Mercy.

Erin: She’s not afraid of Beth, clearly, so hopefully there’s more interaction between the two leading up to No Mercy. Sadly, beating Jillian isn’t that big of a deal these days, which is nothing against Candice – a win’s a win.
Melanie: The build up to the No Mercy match hasn’t been great so far, I’m hoping it picks up because SmackDown has had a hot Divas Championship feud and that title doesn’t have the prestige of this one.

• • • • • • • •

07. Layla (Last Week: #9)
Moving two spots to this week’s #7 is the gorgeous Layla. Layla’s promo skills were on fine form as she so dubiously dumped Jamie Noble in favour of the King of the Ring, William Regal.

Erin: I’m excited to see where this goes – heel managers interest me, so hopefully she’ll find a way to weasel her way into the action. If she’s not wrestling, at least have her be more instrumental as Regal’s arm candy.
Melanie: Layla is the only Diva in WWE being booked interestingly, if you ask me.

• • • • • • • •

06. Taylor Wilde (Last Week: #10)
#10 can usually be a precarious position but not for the Knockouts Champion, Taylor Wilde as she jumps four spots from last week’s 10 to this week’s #6. The youngest Women’s Champion in TNA and WWE history scored a win over Angelina Love at No Surrender and then pinned her partner, Velvet Sky in tag team action on Impact too!

Erin: She’s showing her talent and babyface resiliency in defeating the two of them, but hasn’t that been done sooo many times? I want to root for her, but it’s a little too generic for me. Taylor can keep winning (like she obviously is), but unless she’s given more of a character boost, she’s not going to be holding my interest as the Knockout Champ.
Melanie: I feel Taylor is TNA’s answer to Michelle and not just because they look similar and wear similar attire. Taylor keeps getting win after win like Michelle used to, without showing much personality. Michelle has come into her own in recent months and I hope Taylor will too, but her title reign is lackluster and the fans aren’t really into her.
