Impact Write-Up (September 22nd, 2011): Ho Houses, Madams and Queen’s Qualifiers

20

After losing her Knockouts Championship at No Surrender a couple of weeks ago and being refused a rematch by Knockouts VP, Karen Jarrett, Mickie James had to earn another crack at the title the old fashioned way — by winning a match. Granted, Mickie didn’t have much standing in her way in the less experienced (but ever improving) Brooke Tessmacher, one half of the Knockouts Tag Team Champions, as she earned another shot at the gold in a four-way match at Bound for Glory.

Let’s see how it all went down…

We kick things off backstage with Karen and her trusty assistant Traci giving a talking to our competitors tonight, Brooke and Mickie. Just as the two are about to walk off, Karen holds Brooke back to give her a dressing down. “If I see any of that erotic, strip tease behavior…” she says. I don’t know about you guys, but I find Karen so entertaining.

Karen then turns her attention to her poor assistant, asking her if this looks like a brothel to her. “Does it look like I’m running a ho house?” Oh hell no, she did not! In comes Traci’s husband (where was he when she was doing the dirty with Bischoff?) defending her honor and calls Karen a “madam”. Oh my! This takes me right back to Stephanie and Jericho.

As Karen calls her husband to tell him about what just happened, it’s time for us to watch the Knockouts match…

Out first is the Knockouts Tag Champ, Brooke, in a little coat. She heads to the ring where she does her Candice Michelle-esque reveal and rips off her mini-skirt also. Next out is the former champion clad in denim.

The two women circle the ring before locking up. Mickie gets the better of the exchange by taking control of Brooke’s arm and twisting it. Brooke then counters and does the same to Mickie, but the former champion cartwheels out of the move and hits an armdrag variation on the Tag Team Champion. Brooke quickly kips up and again works over Mickie’s arm, but James reverses and pins Brooke’s arm behind her back. Mickie then goes for a side headlock takedown. With the headlock still in place, both Knockouts rise to their feet as Brooke begins to break free of the move but Mickie then quickly applies another armbar.

Brooke now fights back with a forearm shot — and another! Brooke whips Mickie into the ropes but Mickie manages to baseball slide through her legs. Mickie with a snapmare and then runs the ropes and hits a low dropkick right into Brooke’s face.

Brooke tries to use the ropes to rise to her feet but Mickie is right behind her. Brooke, however, scouts this and hits her with a back elbow in the mouth. Brooke ducks a clothesline attempt from Mickie and then applies a hurricanrana into a pin but Mickie kicks out.

As the Knockouts rise to their feet, Brooke hits a dropkick on James and a splash in the corner. Uh oh, it’s stinkface time and no Divas of Doom to rid the Knockouts division of it! “This is for you, Karen,” says Brooke as she plants her butt in Mickie’s face.

The move delights the crowd but enrages the multi-time champion, Mickie James. The furious Mickie hits Brooke with several clotheslines and then a flapjack. Mickie quickly kips up and locks Brooke into her Mickie DDT and connects. Mickie with the cover and the 1, 2, 3.

Mickie will go on to face Winter and Velvet Sky in the four-way Knockouts Championship match at Bound for Glory.

Afterwards, Mickie checks on Brooke and helps her to her feet in a show of sportsmanship. The two embrace as the segment ends.

Thoughts: I wasn’t really into this match, to be honest. Technically sound, but I wasn’t terribly excited. I did, however, enjoy the shift in Mickie’s aggression following the stinkface. That was pretty interesting. I liked how they played up the fact that Mickie isn’t pleased about receiving that move (after all, she’s a serious competitor) but then after the match, she can be friendly with Brooke, giving us a more three-dimensional babyface as compared to the Divas.

Brooke is getting better in the ring, but perhaps she should leave the gimmicks to WWE. She has an opportunity here to be taken seriously as a wrestler if she can continue to improve, and I don’t think stuff like a stinkface works. I understand she wants to set herself apart, but now more than ever with the Divas of Doom angle being so anti-fluff, TNA has an opportunity to capitalize on those frustrated Divas fans and present an alternative. Instead of doing a stinkface, they could present Brooke as “Hey, she’s hot like a Diva but fights like a Knockout”.

Compared to previous weeks, this week felt very Knockout-lite on Impact.

TNA Xplosion Watch (September 21st, 2011): Madison Rayne vs. Mickie James

14

Starting this week we’re looking to give TNA’s webshow the WWE Superstars treatment, i.e. giving Xplosion a proper write up. Let us know what you think in the comments: is this something you’d like to see on a regular basis, like our Superstars Redux?

Jumping right in.. This week on Xplosion, we’ve got Madison Rayne taking on Mickie James. Earlier this year these two had a pretty lengthy feud, so let’s see how this match compares to those title feud bouts:

Once in the ring Madison takes her sweet time removing her glove, driving Mickie a bit crazy, as she won’t start the match until she’s done. When the glove is finally off, Madison uses it to slap Mickie in the face, I-challenge-you-to-a-duel style. The duel commences.

Mickie takes two swings at Madison but she dodges them, and the two battle for control before Mickie takes control in the most crude sense: she mounts Madison and spanks her butt. Madison gets away and returns the favor with a kick to the stomach and an arm wrench. Mickie attempts to free herself from the hold with a cartwheel, but a choice handful of hair allows Madison to slam her down to the mat while keeping a hold of the arm. Mickie kips up twice, but Madison slams her back down both times. On the third try she manages to gain control, slamming Madison to the mat a few times before latching on a side headlock.

Madison shoves her off into the ropes, but is knocked right back down when Mickie returns. Madison flattens to the mat to duck another attack from Mickie, who cartwheels over her in return and hits a dropkick when both get to their feet. She goes for the pin, but Madison kicks out at the 2-count.

She brings Madison over to the corner and kicks her a few times before Irish-whipping her to the opposite corner. Madison reverses it, but her eventual attack is rebuffed, and Mickie goes for a headscissors. Madison catches her legs and launches them over the ropes. Once Mickie is on the apron Madison grabs some hair, hitting a hotshot that sends her down to the outside. Mickie is laid out when Xplosion takes a commercial break.

When Xplosion returns Madison is on the outside, helping Mickie to her feet, so to speak. She slams Mickie’s face onto the apron, and Mickie returns the sentiment with an elbow to the stomach before slamming her face-first as well. Madison regains control before tossing Mickie back into the ring. She practically tackles Mickie in the effort to get her in the pinning position, and Mickie kicks out relatively easily. Mickie crawls towards the ropes, and Madison gets her to her feet and holds her against them, choking her with the top rope. When the ref forces her to relent, she drives Mickie into the corner a few times instead. She charges and slams her body into Mickie’s, using the momentum to drive Mickie into a spinning facebuster.

Madison takes a moment to greet her fans before pinning Mickie, and the waste of time costs her, as Mickie again kicks out. She goes back to the tried and true strategy of grabbing Mickie by her hair, this time pulling her to her feet and slamming her to the mat on the back of her head. She then seats herself on Mickie’s shoulders, turning her stomach-first to the mat and slamming her head with a not-at-all-suggestive bucking maneuver. Once Mickie recovers from this, the two trade blows until Madison gains enough control to whip Mickie to the corner. Mickie catches her with a kick when she goes in for the attack and hits her in the shoulder with another. Both charge at each other like bulls, each taking the other out.

They struggle to their knees and trade blows in the center of the ring. Eventually Mickie tires of the tit-for-tat and decides to just slam Madison’s face on the mat a few times. Madison fights her off and runs right into a neckbreaker. Mickie goes for the pin, and Madison kicks out at 2. Both seem to be running low on fuel at this point, but a headscissors from Mickie seems to perk the pace up a bit. She goes on a tear of offense, kipping up at the end of it and saluting the crowd. She climbs the turnbuckle for an attack, but once she’s in mid-air her target moves out of the way, and she stumbles to the mat. Madison sneaks up from behind and pulls her into a roll-up pin, but the ref spies her pulling on Mickie tights (in this case, jean shorts), and stops the pin. Madison argues with the ref, and Mickie takes advantage of her distraction to attempt a roll-up of her own. Madison kicks out.

Madison stops any possible attack by Mickie with a well-placed kick to the head. She pulls Mickie to her feet, but before she realizes it Mickie’s taking back control and has pulled her into her jumping DDT, laying out Madison for the 3-count and the win.

Thoughts: Much like WWE Superstars, Xplosion gives a great chance for the Knockouts to have lengthier matches, and even though they may not fully attach themselves to storylines, it’s always great to see the women just go for it, fighting for nothing but the glory of a victory. Madison and Mickie are no strangers, and this match showed that, as both had moments where they anticipated an attack from the other. They were an even match for one another and seemed to trade control pretty rapidly, bringing a sense of unpredictability to the match, right down to Mickie hitting her finisher in a sudden rush of offense. This match wasn’t their best outing, but pretty much served its purpose, showcasing their individual styles, selling each as strong competitors who can trade blow for blow and giving Mickie a win fresh(ish) off her title drop. It may not have been a title rematch and Madison may not have been Winter, but it’s another notch in Mickie’s win column.

Canadian Ninjas Victorious in Japanese Debut

This time, Brie reveals what she was doing on 9/11, is asked about how she feels about haters and reveals her favorite pay per view. (No prizes for guessing which one!)

On haters, Brie says: “My mother always told me growing up, if people are talking bad about you, it’s because you’re doing something right. So as long as people are hating, I guess I’m doing something right.”

Tara Talks Differences Between Working in WWE & TNA, Comments on Lack of Use on TV Lately

29

Knockouts Tag Team Champion Tara appeared on the In Your Head online radio show last night talking about her upcoming independent appearance for a good cause. Tara will be appearing for Remix Pro Wrestling on October 8th, facing Sojo Bolt, in an event that will raise money for the Humane Society of Ohio.

On the show, Tara revealed that she’s been frustrated recently over her lack of TV time along with tag team partner, Brooke Tessmacher.

Tara says:

Recently, Brooke Tessmacher and I, we haven’t been… I’m not at TV. We were supposed to have TV [tapings] today in Tennessee and we weren’t brought in for two TVs. I’m hearing on Twitter a lot of people are like, ‘Wow, you haven’t been used a lot’ and I’ll be honest, it’s frustrating, but I’ve been making my voice known to people I work with, my bosses and everything like that, so hopefully the squeaky wheel gets oiled.

We don’t get punished for speaking up over here which is really nice. I wanna be used. The belts [the Knockouts Tag Team Championships] are not jewellery for me. It’s a championship and I want to defend it. I’m not just here to look pretty with this around my waist, so I’m hoping they use a little bit more after Bound for Glory.

Speaking on whether looks or wrestling skills are more important for female wrestlers, she says:

It is entertainment. I like to stress that. I think it’s a package deal. Fit Finlay in the past said that the best wrestlers don’t get TV time. My experience from my past, for my skills and how hard I worked at my wrestling skills, [I] wasn’t as appreciated as girls that looked like a model and it’s very frustrating.

People wanna see some good looking women on TV and who am I to say, ‘No, you wanna watch wrestling, you wanna watch wrestling’, you know what I mean? I think TNA/Impact Wrestling does showcase different realms of the women. When I first joined — Awesome Kong, ODB, Sojo, Traci Brooks, the Beautiful People — it was just like a mix of people and it was so refreshing to see not the cookie-cutter long hair, blonde hair, blue eyes girl next door. It was really refreshing to come to a division that had so much to offer. It made me feel good.

Tara also talks about her experiences working as a WWE Diva versus working as a TNA Knockout, saying:

It’s nice that the women’s division on Impact [Wrestling] has a little more free range on what we do in the ring. It’s not like, ‘Hey, you have five minutes. Only do five minutes’. They’re like, ‘Well, how much time do you want?’ […] When I first came there, I was like ‘How much time do I have in the ring on TV?’ and they were like, ‘You just do what you want to do’. I was kind of lost because I was like, ‘I need rules’. I was so used to having rules and structure. It was so refreshing. I was like ‘Am I allowed to do this?’. I was still walking on eggshells from the past [in WWE]. When I came into TNA, I was like ‘Oh my gosh, this division’s completely looked at differently’.

Finally on her match with Sojo at Remix Pro Wrestling on October 8th, which will be a very rare independent appearance for Tara, she says:

We have a lot of history. She was the first friend I made when I went over to TNA/Impact Wrestling. She was the sweetest thing but you get her in the ring and things change tunes really quick.

We only had one match together and I was so bummed because I was looking forward to having some future matches together or as a tag team or something like that. Next thing I knew she was gone. I was so sad. I was left alone on the road.

I’m super excited to face her on October 8th.

Listen to the full interview at this link.

Thoughts: Interesting to hear Tara speaking out on not being used as much lately. I would hope there’s no backlash for it, as she says. I agree that the Knockouts Tag Team Championships need to be more than just props and TNA does need to build a better tag division around the belts. Tara & Tessmacher have been solid champions thus far, and it’d be nice to see them in a real storyline/feud.

NXT Watch (September 20th, 2011): Broken Hearts and Broken Plungers

57

Another Tuesday…Another thrilling edition of what has become my favorite WWE program currently airing, NXT! This week, we had match numero tres in the Maxine/AJ series, as well as TWO backstage segments. That’s right, not one, but two! Can Maxine continue to assert her dominance as the top Diva in the entire company, (Yeah I said it, what you gotta say about that El Glamazon and K2?) or can our plucky, plaid geek goddess, AJ, finally get a measure of revenge in singles competition? Let’s find out!

The sound of a Saturday morning cartoon hits, as AJ (accompanied by green plaid this week) makes her way to the ring. We are shown a recap of last week’s events between the two ladies, but let’s be frank, you’re all probably singing along to AJ’s theme as it plays in the background anyways. From there, we head from the cartoons to the club, as the upbeat theme of the only diva who can strike fear in someone with a simple stare, Maxine, enters the frey.

As the bell sounds, the two circle around the ring and proceed to lock up. Maxine shoves AJ off and sends her flying into the ropes. AJ, showing her growth of knowledge from the previous two encounters, manages to kick Maxine in the jaw and run forward with a nice front dropkick. Once the two ladies get to their feet, it’s AJ who takes control with a shot to the face before Maxine eventually gains the upper hand and tosses the pocket rocket into the turnbuckle.

Maxine drags AJ to the center of the ring by the hair and channels her inner Katie Lea by snapping AJ’s back over the knee. (As if you weren’t already my favorite.) Maxine applies a chin lock that also digs AJ’s back into her knee, before turning it into a choke. AJ gets to a vertical base, before being tossed back down for a two count. Maxine grabs AJ’s legs and applies a beautiful Boston crab submission that also includes Maxine putting her boot over AJ’s head.

Maxine takes control by viciously slamming AJ’s head into the canvas. She goes back for the Boston Crab, but AJ rolls through with a sick near pinfall. Once both get to their feet, Maxine drills AJ skull first with a boot to the face for a close call. Maxine begins to bend AJ’s arms back in another submission hold, as the crowd starts to get behind their lovable nerdette. As AJ remains in the rest hold, Maxine begins beating her in the chest with brutal forearms. AJ then crawls over to the rope, but Maxine is quick on the attack.

From there, Maxine locks AJ in between the ropes and snaps her from the back of the head. In what I believe is an effort to lay down a challenge for Kelly Kelly‘s Divas Title, Maxine begins screaming “COME ON AJ, COME ON” as she chokes her foe on the bottom rope. Maxine drags AJ to the center of the ring, but AJ kicks her off. She then locks in a choke hold, as the crowd continues to get behind their favorite. Maxine sends AJ into the turnbuckle, but AJ manages to dodge out of harms way and Maxine COLLIDES shoulder first into the steel pole.

AJ now begins to take control with a clothesline to the corner, followed by a running front dropkick. Maxine reverses an Irish Whip attempt and instead sends AJ flying, but AJ slides under the legs and drills Maxine with a roundhouse spin kick for a two count. Maxine shoves AJ off into the ropes and chops her in the chest, before setting up for the “Maximum Destruction” as seen last week. AJ blocks it however, and kicks Maxine down to her knees. From there, she runs off with an impactful shining wizard for the victory! AJ FINALLY GETS HER REVENGE!

We then head to the back, where Maxine approaches a love stricken, Hornswoggle. She snatches his homeade card to AJ before slamming it into his chest. She talks about how she’s surprised that he left AJ here last week all alone, because Titus kept her company. Maxine inserts that Titus woke up extra early to see how AJ really likes her eggs! Hornswoggle runs off, nearly in tears, as she keeps walking and approaches the team of Derrick Bateman and Tyson Kidd.

She smacks Derrick in the chest and questions why he wasn’t accompanying her to ringside during her match just now. Tyson manages to head out of the equation, as the two continue to bicker back and forth. Derrick proclaims that Kidd was teaching him secrets about the Hart Dungeon, to which Maxine rebuttals, asking what are they going to do? Go to Home Depot and get matching plungers since he ruined hers?!

Maxine tells him to get the big picture, and lifts his head from staring at her chest. She instructs him to look to her at eye level, because they are so close to separating AJ and Hornswoggle. She asserts how important this all is, before slamming him up against the wall and engaging in another patented Daxine Makeout session to close the segment.

Later on, we spot one half of the Chickbusters, AJ, scouring the hallway as she looks for her man, Hornswoggle. She does not run into the leprechaun though, for who does she spot sitting on a crate eating grapes? TRENT FLIPPIN’ BARRETTA, THAT’S WHO. One half of the former Dudebusters high fives the plaid Diva, and congratulates her on a good fight. AJ asks him if he’s seen Horny anywhere, and after much deliberation, Trent finally spouts out that he has not.

Titus O’Neil then runs up to AJ and proclaims how he thoroughly enjoyed watching her whoopin’ down on Maxine. She says how it would’ve been better if Hornswoggle was there, as Titus exclaims he saw him earlier and that the two need to patch things up. Titus says Maxine is full of games, and that he’s going to get ready for his match as she goes to find Hornswoggle. The two then engage in a hug together…just as Hornswoggle waddles up from behind. AJ goes to hug Horny, but he runs off, leaving our perky little princess in a distraught mess of sorrow.

Thoughts: NXT brings me my wrestling joy throughout the week. It features all the talent I love watching, but unlike Superstars, provides storylines as well as the in ring competition. Personally, this was my favorite of the Maxine/AJ series, and I loved Maxine’s Boston Crab type maneuver in particular. She has dramatically stepped up her game in the ring, and I think her matches lately are great to watch. I would like some variety though, perhaps bring over Aksana and Kaitlyn, or heck, debut Naomi while you’re at it. Overall though, AJ and Maxine continue to put on really entertaining bouts (that actually get more than a minute!)

The segments were hilarious, especially Maxine’s interaction with Derrick. I’m enjoying the storyline between them, but I called it since she came back, I see her ditching Bateman and joining forces with Tyson Kidd before it’s all said & done. I think that the plan is going to be how (if they ever do eliminations again) Derrick will eventually be cut, and Maxine will move on to someone who she feels she could take to the top, in Tyson Kidd. And from there, wrestling’s power couple will be formed.

In Video: Rick Cataldo Challenges Becky Bayless at WSU iPPV

WSU’s Boy Diva Rick Cataldo has released a video challenging former TNA star Becky Bayless (Cookie) to a match at the November 19th Internet pay per view when she returns to the company.

Let’s just say that this promo has to be seen…

Is he available for “Promo 101” lessons for the Divas?

More information on Becky and Rick’s history in WSU below:

[notice]Rick Cataldo and Becky Bayless have several things in common when it comes to WSU – both were part of WSU’s first shows in 2007 and both have never minded being called a diva. However, that is where the similarities end, and the differences begin.

From WSU’s start in 2007, Becky Bayless & Rick Cataldo never got along. While Becky Bayless was proving to the wrestling world that she was no longer just another pretty face, but a true wrestler during her series of matches with Alicia, Rick Cataldo was weaseling himself into WSU. For newer WSU fans who ask “How is Rick Cataldo, a male, in an all female promotion?” the answer is simple. Rick Cataldo hired a lawyer and threatened to sue & shut WSU down for not being an equal opportunity employer. Cataldo said while he is a male, he is a diva and deserves the same opportunity and chances as the females in professional wrestling.

Cataldo & Bayless butted heads in the early days of WSU, going at it in Uncensored Rumbles and never being on the same page.

The two had their first one-on-one singles match on 10/3/09 (You can purchase the DVD at WSUVideo.com or watch the match directly on your computer at http://www.clickwrestle.com/pro/22191/becky-bayless-vs-rick-cataldo). Bayless came out the winner in that match, and Cataldo was furious.

After their match, Bayless & Cataldo went different ways in WSU. Cataldo, a former WSU Tag Champion who masterminded “The Beatdown Betties” tag team, tried to find success again, in stable form, when himself & Brittney Savage created “The Cosmo Club.” The Cosmo Club would hold the WSU Spirit & WSU Tag Team Championships during their duration. However, the Cosmo Club wasn’t afraid to get personal with Bayless.

Savage & Bayless never got along and feuded over the WSU Spirit Title during 2010. The same title that Savage first won on 10/10/09 in a triple threat match with then champion Latasha & Becky Bayless herself.

Things got way too personal when Savage, under Cataldo’s pushing and will, talked about a DWI Becky Bayless got in 2008. Here’s a refresher of that video:

Savage & Cataldo would not stop mocking Bayless for her DWI, and things came to a head on 6/26/10 at the WSU Uncensored Rumble III event. Savage would beat Bayless after spitting alcohol in the face of Bayless.

Since that time, a lot has changed. Bayless left WSU to pursue a career in TNA Wrestling, a mismanaged bushleague operation that saddled Bayless with the name of “Cookie”, a play off “Snookie” from Jersey Shore. During Bayless’s time in the miserable cesspool land known as TNA, Bayless was reduced to fist pumping and trying to do a job to the best of her ability. However, now Bayless has returned home to WSU, where it’s not a job, but a personal vendetta. Bayless has unfinished business to settle. Her first target: Rick Cataldo.

When WSU announced that Bayless would be returning on 11/19 at the Breaking Barriers II iPPV, Cataldo demanded a match, claiming he also had unfinished business. After talking with Bayless, the rematch has been made, and we will see Bayless vs Cataldo II LIVE on iPPV on 11/19.

Sara Del Rey to Face Mike Quackenbush

48

Following victories over Claudio Castagnoli (now WWE’s Antonio Cesaro) and Allison Danger’s husband Ares, Sara Del Rey will next face Mike Quackenbush in CHIKARA’s 12 Large Summit.

The match takes place on October 7th in Burlington, NC.

Tickets can be found here.

Thoughts: Del Rey has been on an impressive roll in CHIKARA of late, breaking down boundaries for female wrestlers and has been really been treated as a top star, regardless of gender. Pretty inspiring if you ask me.

WWE & TNA House Show Rundown: Results from September 15th-17th

2

Having trouble keeping up with all of the mainstream women’s wrestling that takes place off TV? Well fear no more! Diva Dirt has got your back with the House Show Roundown! Without any further ado, let’s kick things off!

This past weekend, things were pretty standard. WWE put on two supershows featuring Kelly Kelly defending her Divas Title against Beth Phoenix, while Impact Wrestling showcased Knockouts Champion, Winter, defending against a potential top contender, Mickie James.

Friday September 16th

WWE Supershow in Huntington, West Virginia
WWE Divas Champion, Kelly Kelly def. Beth Phoenix

“Beth came out first to mixed reaction and she started to get into it with Eve as the announcer. Kelly’s music hit to one of the biggest reactions of the night. Kelly is gorgeous in-person, even more so than on television. This was actually a long Divas match and very exciting, too. This is what the Divas could do with more ring time. Kelly won with a roll-up and celebrated outside the ring with Eve.” (Source)

Saturday September 17th

WWE Supershow in Youngstown, Ohio

iMPACT Wrestling in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania
TNA Knockouts Champion, Winter def. Mickie James

“Mickie was very over, which was either because of her WWE fame or the Daisy Dukes Hardcore Country look she had. They had a good match that ended when Winter rolled up Mickie after a missed top rope move and held the ropes to win.” (Source)

Thoughts: Not much to say really, the same matches we’ve been seeing reported on for a while now. I will say they are putting to good use though, as I’m sure Kelly and Beth working together so much has helped to provide such great chemistry on their pay-per-view outings as of late. With the announcement that Velvet Sky will be involving in the fatal four way at Bound for Glory, I would like to see her take place in some live event matches as well, for it could propel that bout to a high level if chemistry can be formed this early ahead of time.

Raw Redux (September 19th, 2011): Vickie Guerrero Takes Over Raw… and There’s a Tag Match Too

61

So last night Raw turned into the Vickie Guerrero show, and no one is complaining! Mrs. Fierce did her thing last night in the most amazing way possible and personally, I couldn’t be happier. Vickie has morphed herself into one of the best personalities, male or female, in the WWE right now and seeing her dominate the show last night made me a very happy writer. There was also a confusing tag team match, featuring Kelly Kelly and Eve Torres taking on Beth Phoenix and Natalya. No witty opening today, guys. I do apologize for that. Let’s just get on with the action.

Divas Champ, Kelly (how impressive was she at NOC?) and Eve made their way to the ring first, and yes, Kelly is still the champion. She’s sporting the hometown jersey tonight making sure no one has any reason to jeer her a la the Buffalo crowd, and she’s proudly holding her title in the air. Eve just seems happy to be there and that’s fine; 2K is a pretty good meal ticket these days. Out next are the Divas of Doom sporting some awful looking Demolition/LOD-esque shoulder pads. Neither of them look thrilled and Cole puts over Beth’s reaction to losing last night. Apparently she wasn’t happy that she kinda choked when it mattered the most.

Beth and Kelly kick things off, with Beth temporarily getting the better of the bubbly Divas Champion. She tosses 2K into the corner, but when she charges Kelly is able to stick her foot up and knock Beth away. Kelly follows it up by trying to run the ropes, manages to duck a Beth clothesline attempt, and ends up sending Beth into the corner where Eve is waiting for the tag. The ex-champion comes in looking to capitalize on the fact Kelly has gotten Beth in a weakened state.

She does get the better of Beth, but only for a few seconds. The Glamazon is quick to knock Eve down with a mighty kick to the chest. Eve withers in pain, and that gives Beth the chance to tag in Natalya. DoD double team Eve with a brutal clothesline before Beth is ordered out of the ring. Nattie goes for the first cover of the match, but Eve has more fight in her than that. That fight doesn’t stop the Canadian from putting a hurtin’ on Eve. She works her over on the mat before tossing her into the corner. Beth backs up, but the referee doesn’t trust the situation. Natalya picks an argument with him, and that gives Beth a chance to cheat. Eve, to her credit, isn’t having it. She knocks Beth back with an elbow and when Nattie comes flying at her, she fights her off as well.

Eve doesn’t just fight off Natalya, she manages to roll her up.

Oh wow, she won.

Well that was interesting. Hmmm. Last night I wasn’t to keen on Eve and Kelly winning yet another match, but the morning after, well… it depends on where they go with it. I have the hole dug, ready to bury this DoD storyline, but I’m not quite ready to start filling it with dirt. I want to believe that this is going to lead to Beth and Nattie going on an absolute tear and destroying Divas left and right, but I can’t be that positive about it. So in this case, I’m just going with if you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all. I do, however, feel like the match had the best Beth/Eve interaction we’ve seen, and I didn’t hate. Just confused by the outcome and where this could possibly be going.

Maybe some answers on SmackDown?

Meanwhile, Vickie temporarily forgot about Dolph last night with Hollywood hunk, Hugh Jackman, around. While Wolverine was in the ring cutting a promo, Vickie and her hot blond man-candy interrupted, both with microphones in their hands.

“EXCUUUUUUUUUUUUUSE ME!”

The heat Vickie gets from that simple phrase is amazing. The crowd is all over her and the United States Champion as they walk to the ring. Once Vickie sees Jackman, she turns on the charm. She calls herself his biggest fan and claims he should agree she is the hottest WWE Diva (we agree!), and Vickie references that People magazine was right when they named Jackman the sexiest man alive. Dolph isn’t impressed.

His jealously is so hot.

Dolph is glaring at his manager/lady friend and finally it dawns on Vickie that she’s supposed to be introducing Dolph. Jackman starts to speak, but she interrupts, but when he sees her ‘Cougar’ necklace, Vickie gets all giggly. Dolph warns Jackman to watch his hands and he apologizes. Dolph has had enough anyway. He wants to put himself and his victory from Night of Champions over, so he does just that. He even manages to get in a few wisecracks as well; little gems such as referencing Mason Ryan as a robot (we agree) and purposely mixing up the title role Jackman has played. Love it. He calls himself the greatest United States Champion this business has ever seen and he’s getting a ton of heat. Love this.

Dolph’s rant continues on, while Vickie keeps on making eyes at Hugh Jackman. The celeb’s movie is plugged and Dolph basically claims he can beat anyone tonight that Jackman would coach in a match against him. The crowd only wants one person, Hugh Jackman confiscates a sign, and low and behold… we’re going to end up having Dolph Ziggler versus Zack Ryder later on tonight.

The match itself is a standard guys match, except better because it has Dolph and Ryder in it. I’m not going to recap it, because that’s not what I do, but it’s worth the watch the see Vickie looking hot at ringside in her romper and my baby getting sucker punched at the end. So sad.

And just when we thought that was it, Vickie shows up backstage and this time it’s with Jack Swagger. Uh oh.

The whole segment is so well done, that a recap isn’t even necessary. Swagger has been after Vickie’s services for weeks and finally she accepts him into her stable. Cue camera shot of the sullen, beaten U.S. Champ rubbing his jaw and looking jilted. This is great. I absolutely LOVE that Vickie, Dolph, and Zack got this kind of push tonight. Working with someone like Hugh Jackman is kind of a big deal and in my opinion, these three people should be pushed to the moon. Vickie is brilliant and both guys are the total package. Celebrity appearances aren’t normally my thing but if all of them come off this well, then more please.

As far as Vickie now having her own stable, well you go girl. Ultimately, it is not going to end well for you, but enjoy it while you can. I fully see Ziggler/Swagger exploding into a huge feud with our girl right in the middle of it. I don’t know how I feel about it, to be fair. Dolph/Vickie is one of my favorite pairings of all time. It works on so many levels for both of them and I don’t want it to ever end. This storyline is no doubt going to be the only thing I care about for the next few weeks, so yay. Excited.

Raw wasn’t a top show tonight, but Vickie’s presence definitely saved it for me. She’s the best in the company right now. Great night for her. See you guys next week… Cryssi out!

WWE.com Suggests Names to Join Divas of Doom

82

WWE.com has created a list looking at a few names who could join Beth Phoenix and Natalya in the Divas of Doom. Compiled of many past WWE names, along with current Diva Eve Torres.

The list of possible names is somewhat impressive with names such as Bull Nakano and Aja Kong, who I’m surprised WWE even remembers existed given their modern day Diva mould.

Of Nakano, the website writes:

Nakano’s alternative style and bizarre look was intimidating. She was a far cry from today’s so-called “blond bimbos” of the Divas division. The Japanese star spiked her hair, painted a web on her face, wore dark makeup and often carried nunchucks to the ring. There’s no doubt she’d instill fear in some of the Divas’ “pretty faces.”

The list also includes Luna Vachon and Fabulous Moolah who’ve passed away, as well as Alundra Blayze and Mae Young.

Perhaps baffling is the inclusion of Eve, but they do acknowledge that it is an unlikely choice and reason why they feel she’d fit with Beth and Natalya, writing:

While she seems like an unlikely choice, Eve is a well-rounded Diva, and has the skills and personality to fit in with everyone … even Beth and Natalya. Plus, Eve pinned Natalya to win a tag team match on Raw SuperShow this week, proving she truly is a strong in-ring competitor. (WATCH) It may seem far-fetched, but if Eve happened to ditch her pal, Kelly Kelly, to join forces with Beth and Natalya, she could help change the face of the Divas division based on her impressive credentials and gain even more recognition.

Read the full piece here.

Thoughts: Not recognized on the list, but I think could be great additions to Divas of Doom, are Divas from the last era such as Jazz, Ivory, Victoria or Jacqueline.

Who do you think, past or present, could be a good addition to the Divas of Doom?

British Fitness Model Says She Has a WWE Tryout Coming Up

29

A fitness model in the UK has told newspaper The Basildon Recorder that she’ll be having a WWE tryout when they return for a European tour in November.

30-year-old Carly Thornton from Billericay tells the paper: “If I get taken on by WWE, I will be off to Miami to do the training, and then I will go from there.”

She adds: “It would be absolutely fantastic if I was offered a contract. I do like wrestling, I love all action sports. I have no experience of actual wrestling, but I’ve done boxing and mixed martial arts.”

“I also went to drama school, so I am an entertainer.”

Read more here.

Thoughts: A non-wrestler in a tryout? Doesn’t add up to me. Perhaps she means she will be meeting with WWE officials.

Britani Knight Heading to WWE Developmental Soon

56

British wrestler Britani Knight, who signed with WWE earlier this year, will be heading to developmental territory, FCW, soon, reports PWInsider.

Britani, who is part of the Knight wrestling family which includes her mother Saraya, has been on WWE’s radar for quite some time, taking part in tryouts last year and this past April. We initially reported that Britani had signed with WWE earlier this year, but she denied reports at the time.

PWInsider reports that Britani will be finishing up her commitments at SHIMMER next weekend (October 1st and 2nd) and heading to Tampa, FL.

Earlier this year, Britani was crowned the first ever Pro-Wrestling: EVE Champion.

Good luck to Britani in WWE!

Night of Champions in Review: Kelly Kelly’s Cinderella Story Continues…

Looks like Diva of Doom Beth Phoenix has a little egg pumpkin on her face. The Glamazon told the WWE Universe confidently on Friday Night SmackDown that the clock was about to run out on Kelly Kelly‘s Divas Championship run, yet the clock struck midnight and Kelly is still your Divas Champion.

In front of her hometown crowd of Buffalo, New York, Beth challenged Kelly in a second consecutive pay per view match at Night of Champions. Let’s see how it all went down, shall we?

Out first is the Divas Champ in a bright turquoise ring attire. Loving this color choice. Kelly’s BFF Eve has returned also, accompanying the champion. Michael Cole mentions that we are in Beth’s hometown, and of course, Jerry Lawler chimes in saying that he’s in Kelly’s corner.

As Kelly’s music dies down, it’s time to welcome back the hometown hero. As soon as Beth’s music hits, we hear a huge cheer from the crowd. As Justin Roberts announces her hometown, there’s an even bigger reception. Pan to the crowd: “If Beth loses we riot” sign. Hmm…

Beth makes her way down the ramp looking super charged-up thanks to the rapturous applause. Really liking this black variation of her new Pin-Up Suits, though I still miss the Glamasuits. Cute hairdo too. In Beth’s corner is her BFF — looking gorgeous in a super cute black dress — Natalya.

As Beth gets in the ring, she takes to the turnbuckle for her signature pose, looking ecstatic at the reception from her fellow Buffalo residents. Beth is certainly all fired up! Meanwhile, Kelly seems a little nervous after seeing this new passion in Beth.

The bell finally sounds and the two Divas lock up as Beth backs K2 into the ropes and the referee breaks things up. Kelly launches at Beth, applying a side headlock but the Glamazon quickly powers out of the hold. Beth with a shoulder tackle taking Kelly down next. She goes for an elbow drop but Kelly moves out of the way. Kelly off the ropes as Beth tries to go for a hip toss but Kelly manages to use gymnastic ability to land on her feet, surprising the Glamazon. Kelly uses this to her advantage and quickly cuts Beth down at to her knees with a kick. Meanwhile, rather unusually for the Divas Champion, she gets a big “Kelly sucks” chant. Never thought I’d hear that from a WWE crowd!

Kelly climbs the turnbuckles and jumps up on Beth’s shoulders for a hurricanrana into a pin attempt but Beth kicks out. Kelly with a drop toe hold onto the middle rope. Kelly then jumps up on Beth’s shoulders again, this time for a tarantula maneuver, choking Beth out from the other side of the ropes. Kelly then climbs up top and goes for a crossbody only to be caught by the bigger, stronger Glamazon.

Beth brings Kelly down over her knee and begins spanking her, humiliating the Divas Champ and perhaps mocking her for using the stinkface. Beth then follows up with a hard kick to the stomach which sends Kelly reeling across the ring. Beth then drives her foot into Kelly’s neck, using the ropes for leverage. Pin attempt by Beth but the champion kicks out.

Beth now chokes Kelly over the middle rope before the referee breaks it up. The Glamazon then guillotines Kelly into the bottom rope, doing a number on Kelly’s windpipe. Good spot. Another pin attempt by Beth, but no three count.

Kelly rises to her feet, fighting back with forearms but Beth overpowers her with a knee to the stomach and then whips her into the ropes, picking her up for a sideslam, however Kelly manages to free herself and hits Beth with a bulldog.

Like a good BFF, Natalya pulls Beth out of the ring to regroup before Kelly can pin her, but Eve sees this and is hot on Natalya’s trail. Eve with a clothesline on Natalya followed by several forearm shots. However, Beth then rises to her feet and slams Eve against the floor by the hair. Ouch!

Back in the ring, Kelly is still on the mat as Beth re-enters. Kelly, however, senses Beth coming and goes for a quick small package but Beth kicks out. Next, Kelly goes for a crucifix into another roll-up attempt but again Beth is not going down for the count.

Both Divas rise to their feet as Beth launches Kelly into the corner. Beth goes for a splash but K2 moves out of the way as the Glamazon eats turnbuckle. Kelly with a kick and a Kelly Killer attempt but Beth manages to counter and hits Kelly with a hard clothesline.

Beth looks around at her hometown crowd who are cheering her on. It looks like Beth is ready to put away the champion. Beth picks up Kelly and props her up on the turnbuckles. Beth climbs the turnbuckles too and sets up Kelly for a superplex. As Beth hits the move, the crowd and announcers react in unison. That’s what creates a great moment. The crowd participation and the announcers really getting behind it, selling it as a big move. Both ladies are on the mat, having had a lot taken out of them. Meanwhile on the outside Natalya’s express is priceless! We catch a replay of the superplex once again, which is a nice touch, again putting the move over as a big moment.

Both women are still down on the mat as the referee begins counting them out. Beth somehow manages to crawl on top of Kelly for a pin but Kelly manages to roll away before Beth gets the three count.

Beth rises to her feet and picks Kelly up by the hair. Beth picks her up for a powerbomb, it seems, but Kelly manages to roll through Beth’s legs and rolls her up for the 1, 2, 3.

K2 leaps out of the ring almost instantly, just as she did at SummerSlam, as Beth is overcome with disbelief at losing in her hometown of Buffalo, New York. “I think Beth choked!” cries Michael Cole.

Kelly celebrates, emotionally, as she retreats up the ramp hoisting the Divas Championship above her after a valiant title defense.

So Kelly is still the Divas Champion and Beth Phoenix walks away empty handed for the second match in a row.

Let’s start with talking about this match. I really enjoyed Beth and Kelly’s work together at SummerSlam, but I much preferred this match. First of all, the crowd investment in this match really added to it. Perhaps we need to have all Divas matches in someone’s hometown? Beth really came out there looking like a hometown hero and had the crowd rooting for her, and even chanting “Kelly sucks!” which is no easy feat. The passion from the crowd got me into this match that much more.

As for the bout itself, I enjoyed the story they told with Kelly going for quick roll-ups trying to score the victory, as she can’t overpower the Glamazon. I thought Beth and Kelly worked really well together and both came off looking good in the ring. The superplex from the top turnbuckle has to be the highlight of the match. Sure, we’ve seen superplexes in the past from the Divas, but not in recent memory. The way that WWE has stripped back its division and made it less hard hitting, it makes spots like this that much more exciting when we do get to see them as they’re a rarity nowadays. That superplex spot felt special and like something we will remember because we don’t see it every week. I also liked the fact that the announcers played it up as something special as well. The stars aligned here — it was executed well, the crowd was into it, and the announcers did their job right.

Now what everyone wants to read about: The finish. People have thrown their remotes at the TV, typed furious messages on Twitter (including some extremely inappropriate stuff to Kelly) and threatened to not watch WWE ever again. I say, if you take it that seriously, you really need to get your priorities sorted.

I had no problem with the finish. Sure, it would have been great to see Beth walk away as champion in her hometown but A) WWE has a history of having wrestlers lose in their hometowns and B) she is a heel, so it would make more sense to have her lose in her hometown. I think the victory here did wonders for Kelly and made her look like a great champion. I really think she’s had a good run as champion and has been well booked in terms of credibility as champ, picking up numerous pay per view victories. In the fickle days of Divas Champions losing their title after a couple of months in a very nonchalant way on Raw, Kelly has been built up well and has had a good run. Regardless of how you feel about her, having a good run as champion helps the belt as a whole and I think it increases anticipation for when Beth eventually does win the Divas Championship. WWE fans, it seems, are so accustomed to instant gratification and complain when a belt isn’t switched in the first title match (i.e. SummerSlam). Good for Kelly, I say, and good for the belt. I really thought she came out of this match looking like a stronger champion than she did going in and that’s a good thing for everyone. Fans may not like Kelly because she’s a “model” and has “no place in the WWE ring”, but WWE is always going to have Divas like Kelly. Even if Kelly wasn’t in WWE, there’d be someone else with a similar background in her place and in this match. Get used to it. It’s what WWE does with those girls that is make or break, and I think they’ve done a good job with Kelly as champion in the long-term. The Divas division will never be perfect with silly matches on Raw etc., but where it counts — the feuds/pay per view matches — I think Kelly has been a successful Divas Champ.

As for her in ring performance, yes, Kelly is not as experienced as Beth but that is why putting experienced workers versus less experienced workers works. Kelly is able to learn and get better by working with Beth, and I think she held her own. I really don’t care what the Kelly detractors may say, she took her licks in this match and I was impressed. She’s no ring master by any means, but I feel I’ve seen a growth in-ring and in confidence in her as champion and she’s really grown on me. I’m liking what I’m seeing so far. Bear in mind, Trish Stratus wasn’t so crisp and clean during her first title run. Not saying that Trish is the best wrestler in the world ever, but by her seventh Women’s Championship run, the WWE fans were behind her as a credible competitor. Kelly has a long way to go, but she’s also very young. If she chooses to stick with WWE, she can only continue to improve. If you think Kelly’s job is easy, please take that superplex from Beth and get back to me.

I was really impressed with both Divas — and the crowd. Good stuff at Night of Champions. I hope if they do get a threequel at Hell in a Cell, it’ll be just as good, if not better.

Kudos to both ladies.
