30 Influential LGBTQ Wrestlers, June 20: Sonya Deville

It is June and that means for the whole month the LGBTQ community get to celebrate extra hard about being ourselves every day! And because of that, every day here throughout the month, we are going to spotlight one LGBTQ+ wrestler. These names are not going to be in any order. So, this won’t be a countdown but more of just a highlight to celebrate.

On June 20, we are going to celebrate one of the most well known LGBTQ names in the business, Sonya Deville, real name Daria Berenato.

Berenato is a former WWE Superstar who has her background in MMA. She is openly lesbian and is married to her wife Toni. Berenato started her wrestling career with WWE where she participated in Tough Enough in 2015. Although she didn’t win the competition, she was still offered a contract.

Berenato did something few have in the wrestling world and that is come out early on in their career. She confirmed she was part of the LGBTQ community during Tough Enough where she mentions it on an episode. In 2017, Berenato was teamed up with former Tough Enough cast mate Amanda Saccomanno (Mandy Rose). The duo went by the name Fire and Desire and sought after the WWE Women’s Tag Team Titles once introduced. This team never won the gold, but Berenato did win the tag titles with Chelsea Green in 2023.

She was a member of Total Divas and celebrated Pride on-screen.

Berenato worked as SmackDown General Manger in 2021 after a six month hiatus before getting back into the ring part time and then fully in 2023. During her time as GM, she worked as a heel and had a long feud with Naomi. Berenato’s contract was not renewed with WWE in 2025. She was in a faction called Pure Fusion Collective along with Shayna Baszler and Zoey Stark and had participated in the Royal Rumble right before her exit.

Currently she hosts a podcast with her wife and as of this time hasn’t returned to the ring.
