Hell in a Cell & No Mercy: Through the Years

hiacthrough

The near decade long No Mercy tradition has been dropped this year in favour of a new pay per view concept, Hell in a Cell. For the first time tonight, the Divas Championship will be defended at the early October pay per view when Alicia Fox challenges Mickie James. But let us go ‘through the years’ of this pay per view:

1999
The Fabulous Moolah vs Ivory

In 1999, the legendary Fabulous Moolah returned to the ring for one last run, feuding with then Women’s Champion Ivory. At the inaugural No Mercy in 1999, Moolah did the unthinkable — winning the Women’s Championship at the age of 76.

Chyna vs Jeff Jarrett

Later that night, more history was made when Chyna became the first woman to hold the Intercontinental Championship, defeating Jeff Jarrett in a Good Housekeeping Match.

Diva Dirt Style Jury: Week of September 14th, 2009

ddstylejury

Welcome to the Diva Dirt Style Jury! No more are the separate ‘Best’ and ‘Worst’ lists, instead we have come up with a scientific approach *cough* to compiling our weekly fashion column. The Diva Dirt team will weigh in on the different looks from the week gone by & mark each look with a score out of ten. The look with the highest average score will be our best look and the look with the lowest average score will be the worst look. Click each photo to see the look in full size.

Let the proverbial runway show begin!

ALICIA FOX
Erin: My sister thought she was wrestling in jeans. I think that says a lot about this outfit–it just doesn’t look right, bottoms-wise. Slap a different color on them and we might have something here. Other than that it’s just kinda generic. 5/10
Melanie: I’m not a fan of the pants, they look like jeans. Not the best Alicia’s worn. 4/10
Steven: Ever since she moved to Raw, Alicia’s wardrobe has been less than exciting. This week is no exception. 4/10
Tiffany: The copper color compliments her hair and her skin tone quite nicely. Not sure how I feel about the denim-copy bottoms. 6/10

THE BELLA TWINS
Erin: Red red red.. Flowers flowers flowers.. It’s the same old same old and when you see it twice as much, you get sick of it even faster. 3/10
Melanie: I actually like the detail on the dress but once again, it’s far too much of one colour & it makes you feel sickly. 5/10
Steven: Once again, the Bellas assault us with red, but this it’s a hit. The simple, red dresses look awesome on them. However this is like the 18th time I’ve seen them wear it. 7/10
Tiffany: I’m not feeling the whole matchy-matchy thing. They’re twins. We get it. There’s no excuse for looking like they’ve just stepped out of a Conga line. 5/10

LILIAN GARCIA
Erin: I really like the burgundy color of the dress, but the numerous chains give off a Mr. T vibe. It’s a bit too much for me. 6/10
Melanie: Not a fan of this look, too much of one colour like the Bellas. The attempts at ‘edgy’ i.e. the cut out shoulders miss the mark for me too. 5/10
Steven: Looking great as always! Love the color on her and the heels are a nice touch. 8/10
Tiffany: Lilian hardly ever gets it wrong. I like the color, the drapery of the dress, and those shoes and jewelry compliment the outfit. It looks very well put together. 8/10

MADISON RAYNE
Erin: I nearly choked when I saw this outfit for the first time in a photoshoot a few weeks ago. This time, since I’ve had a warning, my reaction wasn’t nearly as violent. Unfortunately, the outfit’s still awful and should be burned.. 1/10
Melanie: Honestly, their overuse of colour sets off my gag reflex. They have nice legs though, so good to ditch the pants. 2/10
Steven: I guess there was a sale on black lace this week, huh? Either that or the lights blew out in the locker room… 2/10
Tiffany: This outfit looked bad enough in the photoshoot and even worse in live action. I haven’t seen this much overindulgence of lace since Lady Gaga at the VMA’s. 4/10

Raw Redux (September 14th, 2009) – Trish Stratusfies, Fox’s Hunt Begins

raw14sept09

Where to begin? The legend returned last night to deliver Stratusfaction to all and boy, did she. Trish Stratus may have her detractors [though personally, I can’t see why — it’s like hating bunny rabbits] but she proved last night just why she was considered the hardest working Diva in WWE for so many years. She’s still got it! From the vivacious personality to the in-ring display, it truly was like she never left. All that’s changed really is the hair and boobs!

Plus the Stratusfaction was sprinkled on another Diva Dirt favourite, as on the evening we were reunited with Trish, we also air-punched for the one and only Alicia Fox. Let’s start with that match:

As a huge fan of both Alicia and Gail Kim, I wasn’t sweating the outcome of this match. If Gail won, awesome and if Alicia won, awesome. I never thought they’d pull the trigger on Alicia, I have to tell you. Despite wowing audiences with her in-ring work in the short time she’s been on the main roster, Alicia has shown so much potential and has all the tools it takes to be a future top Diva and future champion. But for some reason, I never really thought they’d pull the trigger on her — it’s always the talented ones that get left behind, whereas Kelly, Maryse, Eve and Maria seem to be the ones WWE focus on. I am pleasantly surprised that they gave Alicia the win because for the first time in a long time, it gives me hope that WWE can be in tune with the fans. The fans have gotten so behind Alicia, it would’ve been wrong to ignore that because in the online world in particular, fans have ‘made Alicia happen’.

Alicia and Gail work really well together, so I was excited for this one and it started out well with the aggressive Alicia Fox kicking Gail straight at the bell. Gail goes for the Flying Dragon I think, which Alicia blocks and goes for a TKO that Gail counters into an arm drag. Nice work there. A hurricanrana and dropkick through the ropes by the veteran, but as they get back in the ring Alicia hits a beautiful tilt-a-whirl backbreaker. Alicia grounds the match with a submission move, it’s nice to see one of these young Divas incorporate the basics as opposed to going from spot to spot. Gail fights back, but Alicia manages to hit another beautiful looking move, this time the fisherman suplex.

She then wraps her legs around Gail in another submission move, nice work. Fast forward a little bit and Alicia sets up her axe kick but Gail move sout of the way and manages to hit her neckbreaker. Gail mounts offense with clotheslines and a nice stinger splash in the corner followed by a great crossbody. Gail goes for the ‘Eat Defeat’ but Alicia counters, shoving Gail into the corner. Gail goes up top for a missile dropkick but misses, is it just me or can Gail not go a match without doing a move where she misses a high spot? She’s only hurting herself even more! Alicia takes advantage to hit the axe kick and gets the win.

I enjoyed this match but I felt there was more of a focus on Mickie at ringside rather than the wrestling. It seems King and Mickie bouncing off each other, while great chemistry, took away from the match in the ring and that’s not a good thing.

I truly hope this is the start of a push for Alicia, however I am not going to get too excited until I see it. Already this year, several Divas have earned Divas title shots and they’ve ended up being “one shot deals” for example, Kelly Kelly, Gail Kim and Beth Phoenix. Mickie’s presence at ringside however, suggests that they could be building to something between Alicia and Mickie, that attention wasn’t given to the latter three. Alicia is a young Diva with a wealth of potential and I think given the opportunities, she really could shine. I’m not suggesting that she win the Divas Championship but I’d just like to see her work with these talented veterans and really bounce off them; already she’s worked so well with Gail, Melina and Michelle McCool. Alicia is at a similar level to Maryse, though I would argue she’s a better worker, so I’m holding out for better end product from Alicia & Mickie than we got with Maryse and Mickie.

Saturday Supplement: What’s in a Name?

saturdaysupplement

In the Saturday Supplement, the Diva Dirt team will aim to discuss a news story, a televised event or other relevant and current topics. The objective, like the average weekend newspaper, is to offer more indepth and lengthy discussion.

With last week’s debut of Courtney Taylor I thought, amongst other things, how awful that name was. But let’s be honest–for a girl that used to be named Wesley Holliday, you can only go “up” in the name department. That thought led me to think of how and why the WWE and TNA name their Divas and Knockouts the way that they do. Some names stick, some don’t, and others just boggle the mind with their awfulness. I’ll ponder that, and take a look at some of the aliases that have become some of the most recognizable names in business, as well as some that just don’t make a damn bit of sense.

Of course, a discussion on wrestling names wouldn’t be complete without mentioning Victoria, er.. Tara. The internet breathed a collective “Huh??” at the unveiling of the new name. After all, how would that sound on television? “Tara hits the Widow’s Peak!” Eh, not really feeling it. After having a name as fitting as Victoria, is was strange to see her suddenly have to change monikers. But let’s figure out why she had to do it: did the WWE have a trademark on the name? Probably, but WWE-to-TNA transfers have often found loopholes and ways to get around that. Christian Cage, anyone? After the recent debut of Lashley, who of course didn’t have to change his name from his recognizable WWE moniker, it makes me wonder if Victoria was forced into changing her name, and if so, why? She had a long, storied history with the WWE, and if any Knockout commanded respect right from the get-go, it was her. Unless I’m wrong and it was her idea to change names, I think it’s pretty crappy to make her switch from something she’s been associated with for so long. After all, don’t TNA love getting a rub from the WWE’s past successes? Why would they want to sever that mental tie to Tara’s success in the WWE by completely changing her name? And for the love of God, why Tara? It’s such an un-intimidating name (Yeah, I get the Tara-Terror connection), and just sounds silly in the context of a wrestling match. Maybe if she had a faux last name with it, it would be easier to digest. Though I will admit, it’s been growing on me after a while, but probably just because I’m getting more used to it.

But while we’re on the topic of TNA, that company has a pretty storied history of questionable Knockout names. ODB, for instance, stands for One Dirty Bitch, clearly a moniker fitting for her over-the-top character, but it’s so damn weird. All I think of when I hear it is the rapper Ol’ Dirty Bastard, which probably isn’t too far fetched, since he often went by the initials ODB as well. Now, I can’t knock her for doing something out of the ordinary, but I personally wouldn’t name myself a bitch. I probably wouldn’t drink from a flask on my way to the ring either, so we’re probably not destined to see eye-to-eye on much.

Night of Champions: Through the Years

nocthroughyears

Night of Champions returns tonight on PPV, and is set to make a lot of unprecedented benchmarks: The first time two Divas matches have been held on one card since 2006 & also the first time the same match has appeared in two consecutive PPVs since late 2007. But the real history being made tonight is that Night of Champions marks the first time ever that both the Women’s and Divas Championships have been defended on the same night.

But enough about tonight, this is about the event ‘Through the Years’. Night of Champions was originally known as Vengeance and began in 2001, before being fully rebranded in 2008. Vengeance/Night of Champions has seen several grudges settled but the Women’s Championship was first defended in 2001, but not seen again until 2007. Tonight marks the first time the Divas Championship will be defended at the PPV.

It all began in 2001…

2001
Jacqueline vs Trish Stratus

At the inaugural Vengeance PPV, young rookie Diva, Trish Stratus was in the first of her historic seven Women’s Championship reigns. Just a month prior to Vengeance [held in December in ’01], Trish did the unthinkable — beat five other more experienced wrestlers to win the title. At Vengeance, Stratus would defend the title for the first time against the veteran, Jacqueline:

Remember a time when Trish was the one who was green in the ring? Feels like a lifetime ago, right? This was a nice matchup, though I gotta tell you, I don’t miss the ‘puppies’ chants one bit. As we all know, Trish would go onto hold the title six more times and get much, much better in the ring [we promise!].

Surfin’ with Trish Stratus: 40 Minute Interview for Free? Score!

You can never have too much of your favourite Divas and especially when one of them happens to be the legendary Trish Stratus! Trish was a guest on The Surf in Canada last week, swapping stories, answering questions and teaching host Jason Agnew yoga and let’s just say, it gets a tad creepy! The episode is now available online and is a real score for any Trish fan — 40 interrupted minutes of the former 7 time Women’s Champion:

As we all know, Trish was not just a great performer but she had so much personality too and that is fully on show in this really humorous interview. No one can do it like Trish! Sporting a new more conservative look, Trish is seen in a dress jacket with the sleeves rolled up, looking really classy. You can also tell that the rumours from last year are true, it looks as though Trish did have breast reduction surgery. Either way, she’s looking mighty fine — though her age is beginning to show in her face. But that’s not a bad thing.

Among topics discussed that are of interest to you guys, Trish talks about some of the Divas today using her signature moves like the ‘Ma-Trish’ and the finger-pointing entrance. She also talks about her personal favourite storyline and much, much more. It’s just a really fun show!
